Stein: Trade Speculation Is Nice, But Reality Is Nuggets Can Wait

ESPN's Mark Stein reports Thursday that while everyone is putting together potential trade packages for Carmelo Anthony, the Nuggets aren't listening...yet.
Stein writes, "Sources tied to five potential Anthony suitors, reached in recent days by ESPN.com, all relayed the same story about the Nuggets’ response: They’re pretty much ending these conversations before they even start by saying that they don't want to engage in Melo talks."
How long before there's serious talks? Stein says the Nuggets want to make sure 'Melo really is dead-set on leaving. If he is, then they will pick up the phone, but don't expect anything for another couple of weeks...and the speculation could extend all the way to February trade deadline.

Krystkowiak a Big Man Who Dreamed Bigger

Larry Krystkowiak wasn't destined to be an NBA player or head coach, yet he achieved both. A second round pick out of Montana, he wound up playing nine years in the league, averaging a very respectable 8.1 points and 4.9 rebounds per contest. He himself says of his game that it was "no talent and supreme work ethic"...and thus hard work is what he expects from others.
After retiring, he took a job at his alma mater, did well and later then took advantage of an opportunity to join Terry Stotts on the Bucks' bench. While there, he helped a young big man, Andrew Bogut. In fact, he so won the respect of Bucks management that they promoted him to head coach, then extended him...before firing him after his first full season.
Krystkowiak, one of three former head coaches on Avery Johnson's staff, thinks he lost his job because he didn't adhere close enough to "my values and morals", adding "I certainly wouldn’t do that again."
Harris Pushing London, Hearing Rumors and Preparing for Nets

Tickets for the Nets two regular season games in London went on sale Wednesday and Devin Harris was on hand to push them. He also talked about the possibility he could be traded for Carmelo Anthony.
"If they’re gonna happen, they’re gonna happen – you just gotta make the most of it," said Harris of trades. "That’s what I’ve done with my move from Dallas to New Jersey. The rumors are just rumors right now, you never know what’s going to happen. You just have to prepare assuming you’re going to be there and see what happens".
It was also Harris' first time back in London since British streetballer Stuart Tanner schooled him on a local playground. "It it did teach me a valuable lesson – don’t take anybody lightly," Harris told the MVP247.com reporter, Greg Tanner, who happens to be Stuart's brother and the cameraman for the infamous video.
Late Wednesday, Harris seemed to tweet that he and Tanner will have a "rematch"! Two years ago, when Harris was asked about Tanner on YES, he responded that Tanner doesn't ever want to see him again.

Nuggets "Asking For The World" In Return for 'Melo

The Nuggets were “asking for the world” in trade talks for Carmelo Anthony.before Masai Uriji was named general manager last week, according to Yahoo's Marc J. Spears.
And they want you to know as well that 1) they are unwilling to say their relationship with Carmelo Anthony is at the end and 2) there's no rift with his agent as has been reported.
Ujiri told the media Tuesday that he intends on meeting with the team's star forward soon and remains hopeful.
"I'll wait and talk to Melo and see what he has to say. I think so far things have been positive. There's been a lot of speculation, but hey, that's how it works in our business."
Josh Kroenke, the Nuggets new owner, claims reports of a rift between Denver ownership and Anthony's agent are wrong.
"Anything that has been said is either someone trying to manipulate the situation behind the scenes, or other motives that are unknown at this point, but Melo and his representation have been great to us."
Meanwhile, MSG's college hoops analyst Jon Rothstein claims in a tweet that the Nets "look like favorites now but are fighting including lopez...Harris, Favors, and picks are package." He quotes no sources.

A Peek into Avery Johnson's Coaching Philosophy

Looking around the internet, I stumbled across a preview for the book "NBA Coaches Playbook". In it was a chapter by Avery Johnson describing his attacking offense, and it seems like a plan our team is built to follow
If you research Avery, you'll see his entire philosophy revolves around being the attacker or aggressor...even on defense. In his video, "Attacking Man-to-Man Defenses, Part I & I", the former Coach of the Year lays things out in more detail. (click the link for a short video)

How Clutch Will the Nets Be?

It might surprise fans to hear that the Nets lost their best "clutch" performer in the off-season, but that's what the 2009-10 clutch stats from 82games.com shows. According to their numbers, Yi Jianlian ranked first among the Nets--and 65th in the league--last season in clutch scoring.
Yi also ranked first on the Nets--and 18th in the league--in clutch rebounding. "Clutch" is defined by 82games as "4th quarter or overtime, less than 5 minutes left, neither team ahead by more than 5 points."
After Yi, the Nets top clutch scorers last season were Devin Harris, at 70th and Brook Lopez, at 109th. Courtney Lee ranked 125th. Of the new Nets, Anthony Morrow was tops at 84th, but Troy Murphy was way down at 165th. Murphy was the 22nd best clutch rebounder. Surprisingly, Morrow shot only 15.4% from three during crunchtime.
If you're interested in where Carmelo Anthony ranked, he was 4th in scoring, 63rd in rebounding, 76th in field goal percentage at 42.7%. In comparison, Morrow shot 37.9%; Lopez 32.1%; Harris 28.9% and Murphy 26.7%. Neither Travis Outlaw nor Jordan Farmar had enough clutch minutes to make the list...although Outlaw is normally among the NBA's best fourth quarter scorers.

More Rumors, No Action on 'Melo

Expect another week of Carmelo Anthony rumors. The latest, which emerged over the weekend, is that the Nuggets prefer to send 'Melo to the Nets, Timberwolves or Kings because those three have the most of what they want in return: young players, draft picks (and rights) and either expiring contracts or a large trade exception.
Of course, the three teams also had the three worst records in the NBA last season, with 12, 15 and 25 wins. That's leading some to suggest the rumor was put out by the Nuggets as a "be careful what you wish for" warning to Anthony. 'Melo of course has his own leverage: he can tell a prospective team he won't sign an extension with them, dramatically reducing his value.
Still, according to (unconfirmed) reports, only one team is on both the Nuggets' list of teams they'd like to deal with and Anthony's list of places he'd be willing to land--and sign that extension. That team is the Nets. In a series of tweets, Al Iannazzone lays out the possibilities, including one that the Nuggets may want to add Kenyon Martin to their side of the deal.

Breakout Season for TWill?

There's another All-Breakout List out Monday and like most such lists this summer, Terrence Williams is on it. It helps to finish the season with an electrifying 14-7-7 final month...and Rookie of the Month honors.
And, as HoopWorld points out, the Nets appear ready to give Williams the opportunity for that breakout, trading away Chris Douglas-Roberts and Courtney Lee. That leaves a lot more minutes for Williams, who will now contend with Anthony Morrow and Quinton Ross at SG and Devin Harris and Jordan Farmar at PG.
