How Ex-Clipper Veterans Could Bolster the Nets Bench

The three-way trade that was agreed upon yesterday between the Phoenix Suns, Los Angeles Cliipers, and the Milwaukee Bucks saw at least four players trade homes to address individual needs. With the Clippers now getting both Jared Dudley and JJ Reddick, the days for Matt Barnes and Chauncey Billups are definitely numbered.

With the Nets' veteran savvy team, the question remains how they fill out the rest of the roster. With players such as Tyshawn Taylor, Toko Shengelia, newly signed draft pick Mason Plumlee, Andray Blatche (on 7/10), Reggie Evans, and the newly acquired Jason Terry (on 7/12), the Nets have some key spots to fill. I'm sure many of you agree that Taylor and Toko, even Plumlee for that matter, aren't going to be those regular rotation guys that we've seen in the past. So, with all the questions arising, here's why I think the Nets would be smart to AT LEAST pick up one of the two ex-Clippers. Matt Barnes: a veteran wing defender who averaged 10.3 ppg and 4.3 rebounds in just over 25 minutes of play. He's that long-armed defender we need to stop the powerful wing players in the Eastern conference. With the West being a point guard dominant conference, Barnes' presence would allow us to at least partially (I use that word because we really can't eliminate the presence of LeBron James) players like LeBron, Carmelo, Paul George, Dwayne Wade, etc. Chauncey Billups: While I believe his days as point guard are over, Chauncey can quickly flip on the pass-first mentality. Now I agree this would be more of a risk, but he could definitely share the back court duties with the JET. He's another veteran who is a proven winner and leader....and sure, he can be what JKidd was to the Knicks last year. A floor general, leader, and "player-coach." Now Nets fans, I'm sure there will be some critiques of signing two older players, but they could bring a lot to this team at a "minimal price." If we do sign Marco Bellineli to be what Kyle Korver WAS (and maybe still can be because nobody trusts Chris Broussard) then I think an addition of Billups, Barnes or Both, can really bolster the Nets bench and provide with tremendous depth.
