We know Prokhorov to be a most successful businessman - the discounted price he purchased the New Jersey Nets for is testament compared to the current valuation of the Brooklyn Nets. Of course he also has an option on Ratner's real estate development plans in Atlantic Yards as well as all his other diverse business investments.
There can be an argument made that Prokhorov purchased the Nets as a culturally significant asset which is highly visible which would protect him from retribution from the Russian authorities who have been able to take down Russian oligarchs who have ventured into the political arena in Russia and are looking to upset the status quo controlled by Putin and his government.
This argument is the same made in this video by the sports journalist Matthew Syed who discusses the role of Roman Abramovich the Russian owner of the London football (soccer) club Chelsea - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ny6EX9VxaqE
Prokhorov does seem actively interested in entering the political arena in Russia as Net Income shows in the numerous posts on the website about Prokhorov's political ambitions.
It will be interesting to see if the NBA allows more foreign owners for its franchises. In the English Premier League i believe the majority of clubs are now owned by non-English owners (as they have been and still are huge money making machines).
Personally, i'm a huge fan of Prokhorov and also what he has done for the Nets. I don't think he is at all like Roman Abramovich - one reason being the NBA is so different in rules and structure from the English Premier League (football).
Any views on this.
