Society that once criticized Barclays now gives it top award

Maddie Meyer

The Municipal Arts Society, which once criticized the Atlantic Yards project will award the project's centerpiece, Barclays Center its "Neighborhood Catalyst," part of its 2013 MASterworks Awards, at a ceremony today.

This annual juried award is "for a project that has been a catalyst for change in its neighborhood."

The awards "celebrate excellence in architecture and urban design in New York City and recognize the best projects, completed within the last year, that have made significant contributions to the built environment of the city."

MAS was so critical of the project that it joined (then later left) a coaltion of opponents to the project.  Norman Oder, critic and chronicler of the project, criticized MAS's decision as "misguided."

It's the second award in the past week for the arena.  Last week, Architizer Magazine named Barclays as its building of the year ... worldwide.
