The Dwightmare is over and it seems like everybody on here has turned back to the gloomy "we suck again" Nets fans. Yes losing Dwight was painful, he's a top 5 player, when healthy, and can turn any team he plays on into a contender. The thought of him on this Nets team seemed to equal multiple championships as him, Dwill, JJ, and Wallace would be one of the best core 4s in the league. But we struck out we tried to get him and couldn't. Billy did all he could without letting Dwill walk. But I think people are overreacting especially regarding the ceiling of this team. Most detractors seem to think we are in a cycle of mediocrity forever stuck in the 2nd round a la Atlanta these past couple seasons. I think we are a lot better than the Hawks ever though of being. We have a top 10 player in the league something Atlanta never had. Everybody is forgetting how good Deron Williams is. He took Utah to the Western Conference Finals and they reached the playoffs every year except his rookie campaign. That Jazz teams second best player was nothing like Joe Johnson who has proved he is an all-star talent. Gerald Wallace is probably not as good as AK47 was during those years but the gap isn't very significant. And now matter how much you guys hate Lopez there's nobody who can deny that he isn't better than what Okur was back then. Our team is better than what Dwill has already proved he can carry.
As for the Atlanta Hawks comparison it's really no comparison. The point guard position for the Hawks averaged 15 and 5 over the last 3 years. Dwill eclipses that by himself not to mention Watsons and Taylor's contributions. Dwill will have a monster year he can't be doubled and tripled defenses have to play he honestly. Obviously the shooting guard position is the same because we have the same player. Joe will continue steady production and will benefit from not being the man. He will get open shots which he will make because he has proved he's a knockdown shooter. I think his points may drop but his percentages will rise. Marvin Williams averaged 11 ppg, 5 rbs and 1 assist a game the last 4 years. He has averages 10 a game for the last three years. Wallace is a clear upgrade above the inconsistent Williams in terms of points rebounds and assists. He also brings leadership intangibles that Williams doesmt have. Josh Smith is clearly an upgrade over Humphries but I think some here have him confused with a superstar just because he's shown some glimpses. Yes he's averaged 17 9 and 4 over the past three seasons but he's also shot 100+ threes the past two seasons. He shot 25% from three the past season and just 30% the season before. Hes an all star who will be paid superstar money just like Joe Johnson was. The difference is we have a superstar and an all star instead of two all stars who don't always play like it. The next matchup is between Hoford, and Lopez. I personally think its a wash more or less but opinions could vary here. Lopez definitely wins in stats except the expected rebounding as Horford has never scored more than 12 a game. Horford has had to share the ball more with better players but that also gives him more energy to rebound. I expect Lopez to do the same but still give us 15 points per game.
As you can see the Atlanta Hawks ceiling just isn't relevant. We are significantly better at point guard and small forward. The Hawks are better at power forward and center is basically a tie depending on what you value. We also have a true superstar something Atlanta never had. Lopez also could improve and turn into the center we all dreamed he could be. I just think people are overreacting because we lost on Dwight. Yes there is no denying he would have made us better but that doesn't mean we should trash this team and attribute false claims to them. Our ceiling is as high as East champions. If Dwill could take Utah to the Western Finals I have no doubt that barring injury this Brooklyn Nets team could give the Heat a run for their money.
