Year one is already in the books of the 3 years that Gerald Green needs on the same team in order to get Full Bird rights. Partial years count!!
If I am reading the CBA correctly, for 2012/2013 we can offer a 2 year $2,247,500 deal. (We must give Gerald a player option!!)
So G.Green gets about $1,099,022 for 2012/2013. (calculated at 120% of the 4 year vet min salary)
G Green opts out after the 1st year, we now have his early bird rights!!
For 2013/2014, we can then offer G.Green the average league salary at 7.5% raises.
So we offer G.Green a 2 year $10,500,000 (or so) deal. If he is rocking the rack for us, we can offer another player option. (Or offer him up to 4 years, but I am trying to maximize his earnings)
So G.Green gets about $5,150,000 for 2013/2014.
If G.Green opts out after 2013/2014, we have his full bird rights and Proky could pay G.Green a new contract with a little extra for his patience.
Bottom line is G.Green’s fastest road to full bird rights is staying in Brooklyn at a low first year salary. Barring injury and if he is confident in the value of his skills, G.Green could earn MORE by staying with us and getting a payday in 2014/2015.
As long as no team offers him the full $5 mill MLE, I think we have a shot at keeping him.
