From the Olympics to the Euroleague Qualifying Tournament, in places like Manchester, England; Ljubljana, Slovenia; Tbilisi, Georgia, and Trento, Italy, Nets players and draft picks will play competitive basketball for their home country's national teams this summer.
Deron Williams, of course, will be playing for Team USA, starting Monday night vs. Brazil. He won't be alone. Mirza Teletovic (Bosnia) and Toko Shengelia (Georgia) will be playing in the FIBA Eurobasket Qualifying Tournament later this summer as will Ilkan Karaman, the Nets #57 pick, for Turkey. Teletovic was back home Monday working out with Team Bosnia and Shengelia's Team Georgia opens its training camp Tuesday in Austria. Bojan Bogdanovic will play for Team Croatia in a series of "friendly" --exhibition-- tournaments as well.
Will they play each other? Yes. Bogdanovic will go up against Teletovic in early August at the Ex-Yugo Tournament and Shengelia and Teletovic will face off against each other twice in the Eurobasket Qualifying Tournament. July 17- 19 - Team USA moves to Europe where it will stay through August 12. First stop is in Manchester, England, Team USA has an exhibition game July 19 against Team Great Britain (Luol Deng, Ben Gordon) at the Manchester Arena.
July 22 - 24 - Team USA celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Dream Team with exhibition games in Barcelona, site of the 1992 Olympics, against Argentina (Manu Ginobili, Luis Scola, Andres Nocioni) on July 22 and Spain (Pau Gasol, Marc Gasol and Jose Calderon) on July 24.
July 24 - 26 - Turkey will play against Bulgaria, Ukraine and Poland in the 2012 European Basketball Tour Sofia.
July 25 - 27 - Bosnia's national team participates in the annual Torneo Città di Trento exhibition series in northern Italy. Mirza Teletovic is captain of Team Bosnia, who will face off against Finland, Montenegro and Italy (Danilo Gallinari).
July 26 - September 11 - Croatia's National Team, featuring Bojan Bogdanovic, is not in the Olympics, but it will play 15 "friendly" games this summer, starting July 26 vs. the Swiss National Team.
July 27 - August 12 - 2012 Summer Olympics in London. First mens' basketball game is against France at. 9:30 a.m. ET (2:30 p.m. local) on July 29. Bojan Bogdanovic's Croatian team doesn't have an invite. Nor does Mirza Teletovic's Bosnia squad.will be the only Net playing at the Olympics,
August 3 - 5 - the Ex-Yugo Tournament in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The six former Yugoslav republics will play three days worth of very intense, nationalist basketball. Croatia will play Bosnia: Bogdanovic vs. Teletovic.
August 7 - 9 - After an exhibition against Austria on August 4, the Georgian National Team hosts a four team "friendly" tournament, along with Ukraine (coached by Mike Fratello), Estonia and Belarus. On August 14, the Georgians fly to Leipzig, Germany, for an exhibition game vs. Germany.
August 15 - September 9 - FIBA European Championship Qualifying Round. Bosnia (Teletovic) faces off against Georgia (Toko Shengelia) on August 21 in Sarajevo, Bosnia, and September 5 in Tbilisi, Georgia. Turkey, which features Nets pick Ilkan Karaman, will also participate. Teams are vying for positions in the FIBA European Championships in 2013.
September 13 -16 - Basketball Without Borders, Russia. Expect some Nets' representation at this first BWB event in Russia.
September 15 - Deron Williams has said he would like the team to begin gathering at the PNY Center to begin informal workout before training camp opens October 1.
