The closer free agency gets increases the pressure on the Nets to bring home a winning team to their new home the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The Nets main focus as Billy King has stated several times, but nothing stands out more than the statement he made after the 2012 NBA draft lottery after he witnessed the Nets picked become Portland's. The trade that sent Memhet Okur, Shawne Williams, and the Nets 2012 1st round pick (top 3 protected) which means if that their pick wasn't in the top 3 it would become Portland's property. After the Draft Lottery Billy King said "We will resign Gerald Wallace and we will resign Deron Williams". That was the bold statement he made, which at that time seemed crazy since Dallas has always been a threat to steal Deron Williams from the Nets. Dallas is Deron Williams hometown, which he is a family guy and the fact Dallas won a NBA title in 2011. What is hurting Dallas the most is that they have gutted most of their roster such as, Tyson Chandler, J.J Barea, and Deshawn Steveson. They were all big key parts in terms on winning that title in 2011, none bigger than Tyson Chandler. They had a mediocre season and got swept in the 1st round to the Oklahoma City Thunder. That certainly didn't help The Mavericks stock at all in their pitch to offer a max contract to Deron Williams, especially the fact they are still trying to gut their roster just to get enough cap space to offer him the money he expects. Deron Williams has said that money won't determine his decision, if that was the case Brooklyn would be the obvious choice. If he resigned in Brooklyn, he would get more endorsements just by being a superstar in the biggest market the NBA can offer. He has signed with endorsers such as Audi, MetroPCS, and Red Bull since he has been with the Nets. The only reason Dallas is even apart of the conversation for Deron Williams is because Mark Cuban the Mavericks owner is respected and Dallas is his hometown. Deron Williams is the block that will drive people in the seats in Brooklyn, since he is the difference between a playoff berth and the lottery for this team. The Nets need to win Brooklyn over right away or from what many say they could never win them over.
You look at other main priorities for the Nets to resign, which Billy King said is a must is Gerald Wallace, the player he traded the 6th pick for and the Nets young blossoming center Brook Lopez who was hampered by injuries this past season. Brook Lopez has been the Nets most durable player until this past season when he played a grand total of 5 games due to ankle and foot injuries. I think they way you have to look at these two, yes they must be resigned, but we might have to overpay both to do so. Where does that leave us for other free agents that might come our way?
Then you have one of the biggest stories continuing to be in the headlines of the Nets, which is Dwight Howard. Where will he wind up? Does he really want to be traded to Brooklyn? Is Brooklyn the only place he wants to go? The answer to all that is, if he didn't sign the ETO (early termination option) form in March, then he would be on the Nets roster as we speak and we would have guaranteed certainty. He wouldn't have to try forcing his way out of Orlando again, which he has put on a pedestal and hurt them more than he has helped this past season. The whole season Orlando had no idea whether he was putting his heart into games or is he was out there because he had to be. He got Stan Van Gundy and Otis Smith fired, because he wanted them both fired. That wasn't enough as we hear that while recovering from his back surgery in Los Angeles that hes secretly demanding a trade to the Nets only. If that is actually true, we will never know until it actually happens or comes close. The bottom line is he should of ended this whole thing in March and just let the trade to the Nets happen.
Then you have the free agents that the Nets are targeting such as Ersan ilyasova, Kevin Garnett, Jason Kidd, Steve Nash. I think ilyasova would be a great pick up for the Nets at the right price, he has a nose for the ball and has a great stroke. I would hope Billy King wouldn't overpay him to persuade him over to Brooklyn. I don't really want any part of Kevin Garnett unless hes signed for the VeteranMinimum, which definitely wouldn't be okay with him. Jason Kidd, it would be great to see him come back to the team he put on the map and retire. He said he would sign for cheap and wants to be Deron Williams backup. That would be great for us, we get a cheap leader, floor general, and can still put up decent numbers on the cheaper end.
In conclusion, I hope the Nets come out and dominate this free agency and build a legacy in Brooklyn they never could get in New Jersey. The Nets needs it and the city of Brooklyn needs it.
Tell me what you guys think!
