All over the message board I see people posting about how the Nets should trade Morrow. If it's not a post about aggressively trading Morrow, it's a casual suggestion about throwing him into a lesser deal to either clear cap space or acquire a pick. I am not writing this post to start an argument or even spark debate but to rather attempt to understand the rationale behind actively seeking to send Morrow packing.
I am of the opinion that Billy King spent last season wishing on a star for Dwight Howard to come to the Nets. He made very little moves in an effort to make the Nets better beyond obtaining Dwight. While the Gerald Wallace trade is under mixed reviews (I happened to like it), it was only a move that King made once he knew that Dwight would remain in Orlando for the season.
With the idea that last season was spent waiting and hoping for Dwight - and with the reality that the Nets will most likely spend as long as they need to pursuing the same goal - I fail to understand the logic behind trading Morrow. It was posted on NetsDaily several times this season that Anthony Morrow is one of the guys who Dwight would like to play with. While the Nets cannot unrealistically and 100% put everything on hold in order to entice Dwight to come, I feel that there are lesser and more tangible incentives that would sweeten Brooklyn's attractiveness for Dwight. If Anthony Morrow, one of the guys who Dwight has said he has wanted to play with, is still on the team, won't that be another reason - albeit small - but another reason why Dwight may want to come here?
Beyond Dwight coming to Brooklyn, I am of the opinion that Anthony Morrow is a good player. He is a clutch three point shooter, hustles, plays with a lot of energy and wants to be a Net. He is also young, unlike someone like Ray Allen who serves the same function on the court. I think he may have fallen out of favor a little this year because he was being asked to start on a weak team. I consider him to be more of a six man type player, but he is still talented regardless.
My main point is that we shouldn't look to throw away a player like Morrow. Maybe if the right deal comes around and Morrow needs to be included, so be it. Nevertheless, I keep seeing all sorts of trade proposals - many of which make no sense to me - and all of which involve throwing Morrow away. I again think that it is imperative that the Nets hang on to Morrow, as realistically as possible, to again give Dwight one more reason to come here. I think we need to be smart with our assets and not carelessly squander talent...unless of course we have to.
