We've got a 25.5% chance to get into the top 3 picks for the draft this year - not bad odds, especially based on the history of the lottery.
In the event that we get the 2nd or 3rd overall pick, who would you want the Nets to pick?
It's got to come down to Bradley Beal, Michael-Kidd Gilchrist, or Thomas Robinson. Of the Nets' top three draft targets, the original list included Davis, MKG, and Robinson, but more recently it had Beal in place of Robinson. So you figure Billy King and co. are interested in all four players.
Beal may prove to be the better offensive player in comparison to MKG, though MKG is the better defender and is also bigger. Personally I'd still go with Beal over MKG for his offensive abilities at the 2 position and his ability to play the point. I also feel with Wallace and Green and a possible other addition, we are less desperate for help at the 3.
That makes it Beal vs. Robinson. I loved watching Robinson play this year. Everyone talks about Humphries as a hustle player -- Robinson brings hustle PLUS athleticism. Hump is a guy who worked incredibly hard to become the athlete/NBA player that he is. Major props to him. But Robinson seems like more of a natural basketball talent, and he's just plain tough. The major knock on him is that he's only 6-9. I don't care. He's got a solid frame and a 7'1" wingspan. His presence on the court is bigger than his height suggests.
In the end, I think (and hope) we'd have to go Robinson with the 2nd or 3rd overall pick. He'd give us the rebounding and defensive presence we need in the frontcourt, and has a solid mid range jumper. One thing I didn't like was that he missed quite a few put-back layup opportunities, but you'd think that's correctable. Overall, he's the kind of guy that could come in as a starter from day 1 at a position of need. Then we go take care of our need at SG in free agency, or stick with what we have in Brooks/Morrow/Green.
