IF.. and that is a big IF.. but if the reports were true, that there is some sort of $200m contract/incentive for Dwight to play in Brooklyn, then wouldn't it make sense for him to come to the Nets even if it's for the MLE next season, and thus it doesn't matter if we have cap space or not?
I have no idea if this deal exists or what the incentive would look like, but he would have a couple options going into next season.
Sign with his current club (whoever that may be) for 5/109.
Sign with a new club for 4/80
Sign with the Nets (if they don't have cap space) for the MLE or 3/15
If he picked our option, a couple things have to be considered...The deal would actually be comparable to 4/33 or 5/50 since we would be a free agent and able to sign another max deal and those 4th and 5th years would be about $18m each. However, if he truly has the monetary incentive to play for the Nets... tack another $200m onto those amounts (or the equivalent of that $200m over 5 years - the amount he would have received from Adidas regardless)
Anyway, the point of all this is... IF that incentive does exist, he can always use that against the Magic or any team trading for him and say.. it doesn't matter that the Nets only have the MLE to spend on me.. I'll take it, because I stand to gain $200m by doing so. /Negotiations.
