What is the difference between Marbury and Deron? Is it a coincidence that Jazz are winning with basically the same guys as last year with exception of Favors/rookie and less quality of a point guard. Similar to Marbury, Deron displayed the same lack of leadership outward frustration and malcontent that force O'Connor to ship him out at the trade deadline and he continue to do so this season. Marbury was a flashy point guard that can score with the best of them and had nice assist numbers but lack the point guard intangibles that makes the player and team better. Sounds like Deron too.
A. 21.6 points 8.2 assist 41.1% shooting 3.3 rebounds 1.1 Steals 4.0 Turnovers
B. 20.5 points 7.8 assist 43.2% shooting 3 rebounds 1.4 steals 3.4 Turnovers
Which point guard would you rather have? It's a toss up to be honest, at least statistically.
My point is remember long time Nets fans, including myself, initially thought that Marbury was the savior that was going to right the ship. Brought the team instant credibiity and excitement. We rolled out the red carpet and gave him the keys to the franchise with little if any accountability. After a couple of years, it was clear that he was more flash than substance and he was not going to have a positive winning impact on the team.
J Defeo best described the end result: "His numbers with the Nets were solid; you could just about guarantee 20+ points and 8+ assists nightly. But the problem with Stephon has never been his on-court production. Marbury’s trouble was because his attitude and leadership abilities; his shoot-first and shoot-often mentality often took his teammates out of the game and isolated them. During Marbury’s time with the team, the Nets were not exactly the most talented bunch. Marbury made no secret to hide his displeasure with his teammates, famously writing “All Alone” on his ankle tape before games." Arguably you can simply substitute Deron's name for Stephon and the quote above is eerily similar and accurate.
Long story short, I hope I am wrong to be honest....but "those who do not remember their past are condemned to repeat their mistakes." In my opinion, Deron William is the reincarnation of Marbury but less athletic and just as much leadership and attitude problems. To me his greatest value to this team was his ability to lure another superstar to join this team, but that does not look like that it s going to happen. Proceed with caution Nets front office......
