This is actually my first post in my new Blog (http://thebasketpill.wordpress.com) Its about the Nets so I thought I would post it here too. Enjoy.
This past week has been a roller-coaster of emotions for Nets fans. It started out on a high note for them as they were called out by basketball analysts everywhere, as the favorites to land Dwight. The General consensus was that the Orlando Magic would trade Dwight to the Nets rather than be left with nothing like they did when Shaq left. It was all but set in stone at this point, all the experts agreed, so what could go wrong? The Nets were about to find out...Out of nowhere the news comes in, Dwight has changed his mind, he has now decided to stay! Panic starts to set in among Nets fans, but before they are even allowed to digest this information, another News flash, Dwight changes his mind again! Crisis averted, Nets fans breathe a sigh of relief and most of them go off to bed with dreams of Deron Williams setting up alley oops for Dwight, everything was going to be alright...or so they thought just when you thought the situation couldn't get crazier it happens, Dwight Howard, in the middle of the night, changes his mind one last time and this time it sticks. Dwight was officially staying with Orlando, just like that he slipped from their fingers, all in a span of less than 24 hours. Dwights indecision they called it. It was probably the worse 2 days a Nets fan has had in a very long time. (and by long time I mean since last year... when they lost Carmelo to the rival Knicks...Bad News is common around here...)
It seams to me that alot of Nets fans are going through the 5 Stages of Grief. No Seriously, hear me out. For the first couple of hours after it was announced that Dwight would not Opt our of his contract and would indeed stay another year, just about every Net fan on the web was in total disbelief.(Stage 1, Denial) "No, this can't be true", "This can't be happening to us again", "this reporter is a Troll, it must be a lie" "Dwight is just playing games with management so he won't be traded" "This makes no sense, it can't be true!" I could go on but you get the picture.
A few hours later, after the truth set in, all Hell broke loose. Dwight Howard became Public enemy number 1. (Stage 2, Anger) "to Hell with Dwight" "his new nick name should be big baby!" "WTF is wrong with Dwight?" "I hate Dwight!"I hope he never wins a title! " " Hes a jackass!" "He can go jump in a fire!" things got pretty vicious and who could blame them? There is a thin line between love and hate and they had put all thier hopes on this man, he was the first superstar to actually say the words "I want to get traded to the Nets" (at least that i can remember) They all believed it was a matter of when not If, so when the tides turned it felt like they got betrayed, on March 15th of all days (eh tu Brute?)
After the Anger started to die down, I've started to notice that some Nets fans are now coming up with new theories and ideas about Dwight. (Stage 3, Bargaining)l There were some posts on Netsdaily.com talking about conspiracty theories and others saying that we aquired Wallace so that we could trade him for Dwight during the draft... Sorry to burst your collective bubble but its not happening, you all need to move on from this stage. Plain and simple Orlando is more than likely not going to trade Dwight, and if in fact they do trade Dwight it won't be until right before the season starts. They have no reason to do it before that time. They will use the whole summer to try and improve thier team and if they fail to do so and can't get a commitment from Dwight then they will trade him. There will be plenty of teams willing to gamble for a years worth of Dwight. The Nets on the other hand can't afford to wait out all summer to see what Orlando will do. Deron has already said he will not opt in. ("this is not monkey see, monkey do.." his own words) Deron is going to look around and sign with the team that has the most potential to get him a championship and to get him paid. If Billy King tells Deron that the plan is to wait on Dwight again, I'm sure Billy won't even have time to to see the door slam as Deron runs out that door. Deron is not going to risk his next few years on "maybe" Nets Management is going to move on and its time the fans do as well.
This will lead us to the next stage. (Stage 4, Depression) Now this is a stage Nets fans are very familier with. Untimely death of an All-Star in the prime of his career? Check. Great young players bursting with Potential who can't keep thier heads screwed on right? Check. Season ending injuries? check. Desired Super-star teases and then goes elsewhere? Check, check and check. I think Nets fans will handle this stage the best, afterall we've had years of practice!
Finally this will bring us to the last Stage. (Stage 5, Acceptance). Dwight is not coming fellow Nets fans, that dream is dead but all is not lost, we still have the greatness that is DWill, we have Gerald "Crash" Wallace, Alley Oop Green, Swag, Ammo, the Hump, and of course Brook should be back soon and we have a fighting chance to make the playoffs, maybe a little luck will finally head our way if not hey, we still have Wallace's 10 Mil. expiring contract which is proably a more valuable asset than a questionable draft pick...Can we trade it for Josh Smith? Paul Pierce? The options are numerous and thats the best part about acceptance. Once we accept it, we can begin to move on, we can begin to look to the Future and all the hope it brings. Yes even Nets fans can hope.
