I can understand why the Nets are commited to keep Williams. They won't get back equal value, and he's been telling the Nets FO all the right things. I have no doubt he and his family enjoy NY and he's smart enough to see the opportunities Brooklyn presents. But refusing to entertain offers for Williams now that Howard is out of the picture is exactly the same as Orlando "rolling the dice" on Howard had he not signed the ETO today.
I love the Wallace deal (got a quality SF that we haven't had since RJ) and gave up very little. But unless more moves are forthcoming (and they well could be), I doubt that would be enough to satisfy Williams. He wants to win, and I don't think he'd think twice about bolting for Dallas this summer if he thinks that presents his best opportunity to win a ring.
I think the Nets at least need to field some offers for him to get a sense of what they be able to get for Williams if they deal him today. Maybe they can get a Rondo or someone else that can give the team some momentum heading into free agency.
Maybe as a Nets fan of 35+ years, I've just been conditioned to always expect the worst. But I have a sinking feeling that we will watch Williams leave for nothing this summer and all we'll have to show for giving up Harris (I know he's wildly mediocre), Favors and 2 lottery picks is cap space. I would not roll the dice on Williams.
