Howard's Choice: D-Rose versus D-Will

I'm a Bulls fan originally.

As I've posted before in one of the countless threads here at NetsDaily, I came to NYC many years ago with a hate for the Knicks in my DNA (from the old Bulls-Knicks playoff battles) and became a full-fledged Nets fan the day of the Shawn Bradley trade (don't ask). Anyway, I'm a big fan of both teams and frequent a Bulls forum as regularly as I do NetsDaily, but something's been bothering me that I wanted to post about here.

One thing I keep wondering about lately is how almost everyone, outside of Nets fans, says Dwight with Rose is an automatic championship. But they don't seem to consider that to be the case should he partner up with D-Will -- like Williams is a big notch below Rose as a player.

I love Derrick, but the career numbers of the two PGs are not all that different -- other than this year, where the terrible team around Williams (our beloved D-League All Stars!) has made his FG% and efficiency dip. But, cmon, Rose is on a really good team with an excellent coach. D-Will not so much. The biggest advantage Rose has on Williams is being younger, but I think Dwight is very close to Deron's age so that wouldn't seem to matter all that much to him.

Here are their per game averages and percentages:

D-Rose
*This season = 25 PER
REGULAR SEASON - CAREER
21 points
4 rebounds
7 assists
46% 2fg
31% 3fg

POST SEASON - CAREER

42% 2fg
24% 3fg

D-Will
*This season = 22 PER
REGULAR SEASON - CAREER
18 points
3 rebounds
9 assists
46% 2fg
36% 3fg
81% ft
POST SEASON - CAREER
44 games

10 assists
46% 2fg
40% 3fg
80% ft

I mean look at that and tell me how Derrick is head and shoulders better than Deron. He's not, based on what both players have done so far in this league. But apparently every non-Net-fan seems to think differently. To say Dwight is picking D-Will over D-Rose because he doesn't care about winning is just... asinine. And it makes Bulls fans (a fraternity I belong to) sound like Knicks fans to me.

Of the two, Derrick is probably a bit better just based on age -- and certainly right now, efficiency -- but that's it, in my opinion. I think these judgments are based more on the fact that people see the Nets as losers because they've been really bad these past two seasons (while, ironically, semi-tanking to have a shot at Dwight). But which team is the obvious "winning situation" going forward would to some degree depend on what kind of team could be kept together, or put together, by Chicago or Brooklyn after a trade.

If the Nets have to make a bad trade to get Howard, yes, Chicago would definitely be a better destination for winning a championship because they are deeper and ready to win now (definitely have a WAY better coach; younger more dynamic scoring star; high quality bench). This season it's probably not even open to debate.

But I think if the Nets are able to sign Dwight as a free agent this summer, holding on to their assets -- or else make a trade this week without taking back a cap-crippling contract from Orlando -- it becomes much more debatable which team would be better over the next 5 years; it really does. Why don't more people see that?

Again, I love both teams, but it seems to me that large numbers of people, fans and sports media alike, have just settled on a narrative with regard to the Howard situation, and, frankly, it's a simplistic one.
