Deron Williams Is An All-Star

Photo

Deron Williams is among the seven Eastern Conference All-Star reserves announced by the NBA on Thursday night. It will be Williams' third (and third straight) All-Star appearance, and his first as a member of the East.

"I am very honored to be selected to this year’s All-Star game," Williams tweeted. "I would like to thank all of the coaches in the Eastern Conference."

He was the only player from a sub-.500 team selected to the East All-Stars.

It's the Nets' 20th All-Star selection since they came to the NBA and their first since Devin Harris in 2009. (Full list after the jump.)

Joining Williams on the list of East reserves is Chris Bosh, Luol Deng, Roy Hibbert, Andre Iguodala, Joe Johnson, and Paul Pierce. The East starters are Derrick Rose, Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony and Dwight Howard.

The All-Star Game will be played on Sunday, Feb.26 and televised on TNT.

congrats to dwill

Well deserved given the slow start. He changed his attitude and is playing very well as of late. Given the injuries and the talent on this roster it really is amazing the numbers he’s put up. Congrats to dwill. Deserved it.

"LeBron puts up great numbers, can't close w/o DWade. LeBricked 3 late 3s when shouldve been driving, getting to line. What else new?"

Yet casual basketball fans think he is a God, and would exhaust their entire squads to land him...

Not effectively so.

by Dopeness on Feb 9, 2012 8:18 PM EST up reply actions

Well, it obviously is.

You might think you know about basketball, and that’s great, but the coaches voted him in. I’ll take their opinion.

by SadNetsFan on Feb 9, 2012 8:20 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t know much about basketball. The metrics that were constructed by professionals are the best way we have of evaluating performance, though.

by Dopeness on Feb 9, 2012 8:27 PM EST up reply actions

You use that BS every time.

1) I like advanced stats as much as the next guy, but the “professionals” (I guess you can call them that) have even said the sample size right now is too small to judge anything accurately.

2) Morey and other “advanced stats” guys have said that teams have access to WAY more information than we do, and a ton of different metrics that we don’t have…because even though 82games, basketballreference, hollinger, w/e are “professionals”, the real professionals are getting paid and working behind the scenes

3) they are not the BEST way to evaluate performance. they are a tool in helping evaluate performance. another great way is watching tape (no, not you are me, although we may try, i’m talking about “professionals”) coaches, assistant coaches, the video guy, they understand the plays, they understand what is REALLY going on, and they “evaluate performance”.

4) so no, “the metrics that were constructed by professionals” and viewed by YOU are not the “best way we have of evaluating performance”, unless WE is YOU, and you don’t want to include the insight of the coaches, who again, have the best tools and ability to actually evaluate performance.

by SadNetsFan on Feb 9, 2012 8:45 PM EST up reply actions

Personally, I think you’re giving the coaches way too much credit. Obviously, I don’t know what they do, but it seems — to me, at least — that they’d be too busy to sit down and conduct a real analysis comparing players who are eligible for the All-Star team.

I assume that they kind of just rattle off names (obviously they know, just from general scouting, which players are having poor and great years) based mostly on reputation. Look: there’s no doubting that when Deron Williams is playing at his best he’s a top-3 point guard in the NBA. The coaches know that; you and I know that. I think, for the most part, that’s the way they approach this: “Oh, Deron Williams? Yeah, he’s a top-tier point guard in this league; he’s gotta be an All-Star.”

Now, I could certainly be wrong, but that’s how I picture it. I don’t think the coaches put that much effort into selecting these reserves. If they did, we wouldn’t have some of these egregious snubs every year.

Just curious: What “BS” are we referring to?

by Dopeness on Feb 9, 2012 8:53 PM EST up reply actions

I have seen you writing that Jennings and Kyrie are better suited for the all-star game than Deron and it’s just not true. Well, maybe not untrue, but at least say the other side has a credible argument. You dismiss that instantly and condescendingly, so I’m trying to stand up for the other side.

I love advanced stats and all that, but there is a ton going on behind the scenes we don’t know, including preparing each night for the other team.

We don’t really know the coach’s criteria for who is an all-star, but it might be something along the lines of “when we play that team, how much is our game-plan designed to stop X” or “who would I rather have on my team” or “who is simply having a better year”

I don’t know what it is, and I think we can always talk about who is having a good/bad year, use advanced stats, talk about what we see on the court, etc. but at this point, I think we at least have to acknowledge the argument that the coaches know way more than we do. You write it out like Deron shouldn’t have been considered for more than a second, and this was really a debate between Jennings and Kyrie.

I like them both. I actually followed Jennings in Italy and he is one of my favorite players, so I’m bummed he didn’t make it (I like Deron, but I don’t really care if he makes it or not), but at the end of the day, maybe coaches picked Deron because they’d rather have him (even just for this year, based on this year’s play), or their team works harder to shut him down individually.

Anyway, the BS I’m referring to is using the advances stats as the be-all-end-all in an argument. First of all, people who use advanced stats talk them down a lot; secondly, there is legitimate debate about which stats to use.

So, yeah, that’s pretty much what I was talking about.

by SadNetsFan on Feb 9, 2012 9:11 PM EST up reply actions

First off, when I condescendingly dismiss the other side of the debate, don’t take me seriously. Usually it’s with tongue played firmly in cheek. Of course there’s a case for why Deron Williams should be in the All Star Game. It’s Deron frickin’ Williams.

All BS aside, all I’m saying is that Jennings and Irving have had better years. That’s all I’m saying. Do I believe that they’re better players than Deron Williams? Of course not. Do I honestly believe that they deserve to be All Stars more than Williams? No. The All Star Game isn’t about who’s having a better year, it’s about showing off the league’s best players.

Just for the future: don’t take me too seriously. I’d say about 90% of the time there’s some facetious undertone contained in my post.

by Dopeness on Feb 9, 2012 9:20 PM EST up reply actions

Too add: of course, advanced statistics are flawed. They’re far from perfect — there’s always room for improvement. However, I do believe that they’re the best tool we have for drawing a conclusion from a sufficient sample.

They’re not the end-all-be-all, but they’re certainly better than anything else we have at our disposal.

by Dopeness on Feb 9, 2012 9:23 PM EST up reply actions

Ah, gotcha. Sorry, it’s hard to tell.

Also, I would have loved for Jennings to have made the team, and I really think he deserves it. Putting up those numbers without a lot of help and playing what I think has been some pretty good defense.

I agree with everything you wrote actually.

The TNT “analysts” think Lou Williams should have made it over Deron Williams. Apparently its easy to put up stats when your team is down 20 every night… These guys

by netsfanrasmus on Feb 9, 2012 7:26 PM EST reply actions

Deron padding his stats in losses? Let's check his season splits...

Deron’s point-assists in games won: 26 and 10; 48% FG
In games lost: 18 and 8; 38% FG

Good Deron shows up in wins mostly, not in blow-outs.

by stenpoint on Feb 9, 2012 7:33 PM EST up reply actions

They win because good deron shows up

And lose when he doesn’t.

So in theory he could be in the running for MVP if it wasn’t for his high turnover number and that nobody wants MVP to be on a losing team. He’s more valuable to the nets than lebron to the heat

You can’t choose to value his endorsement when he says something Pro-Nets and laugh at how stupid he is when he says something completely moronic. A lot of people here seem to do this sort of thing. Discredit anything that suggests Dwight is going somewhere other than Jersey and practically want to award someone a Pulitzer when they report something that points to us as a probable destination haha.

Very hard to argue actually

Knowing that the Bucks are doing great because of Jennings. But yeah Deron Has better stats but the Bucks has a better record than the Nets that’s why Deron is being overlooked by the so-called NBA writers/experts.

He is an extremely talented player without question but if I’m starting my own team tomorrow I am only looking at Deron or Chris Paul. Guys like Rose and Westbrook are on a lower tier IMO. Deron made Boozer look good, but the way he plays with Rose as his PG has fans wanting to run him out of town.

ITS A VVVVVVVVVVVVVVCCCCCCCCCCCCCC THREEEEEEEEEE

by Keysta101 on Feb 9, 2012 8:20 PM EST up reply actions

Well, if it’s talent, then Deron Williams obviously deserves to make it.

I thought — I repeat: thought — that it was supposed to be heavily dependent on how said player is performing for said year. I mean, Michael Beasley is one of the most talented players in the league, but his production is putrid.

However, I understand that this “game” is more about entertainment than anything; so I understand why we would be apt to put a player like Williams over someone who deserved it more (based on production) like Irving or Jennings.

by Dopeness on Feb 9, 2012 8:26 PM EST up reply actions

First of all, his selection should only be compared to PGs

His competition: Irving, Jennings, Rondo

Jennings has played well by his standards, but he’s still not having a better individual season than Deron. Put Jennings on this Nets team, and we won’t even have 8 wins.

Rondo has missed a lot of games, and Boston were struggling early on.

Irving can be argued because his individual statistics are pretty amazing for a rookie. Extremely efficient for a rookie, and it could be argued that he deserved it more. But then again, rookies rarely get an ASG call up. Irving also averages really low assist numbers, not good for a PG.

Deron Williams

Is arguably the best PG in the league.. Nuff said

I grabbed 19 rebounds in my first professional game, and somehow found a way to score 20 points. I felt real good about it. I felt that this was the beginning of something good.

Otis smith must hate the fact Dwill will rear his head in Orlando again.

Now no other superstar can convince Dwight otherwise, when our own all star stays in his head all weekend. Marshon putting on a show won’t hurt either.

Guys Dwight isnt being traded to LA

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/o … 2286.story

DeVos also dispelled the notion that — if the team’s front office determines it must trade Howard — he would veto a trade to the Los Angeles Lakers because the Lakers signed Shaquille O’Neal to a free-agent deal years ago.

by RandyOreens on Feb 9, 2012 9:05 PM EST reply actions

“I don’t have any emotion on that,” DeVos said. “I never talked about where he would go because I don’t want him to go. I don’t discuss where he might go.”

think he was saying he wouldn’t veto a trade

He wasn't even available to choose on the fan ballot.

Injuries and missing games should count for something.

Rondo missing 1/3 of the games means something, although DWill is better anyway.

Why else would Boston be shopping Rondo around?

Does anyone see the Nets shopping DWill, even though he isn’t at all guaranteed?

by WR3 on Feb 9, 2012 10:37 PM EST reply actions

As much as I hate the Lakers, the win is a positive for Nets.

We don’t want to see Lakers getting desperate for Howard.
The fact that they can still beat Boston on the road should keep the Lakers content.

by jerry25 on Feb 9, 2012 10:45 PM EST reply actions

They know they have no shot at Dwiht. They evn want to trade Gasol for Rondo.

by valdu08 on Feb 9, 2012 10:46 PM EST up reply actions

Without a guarantee, Buss isn't going to give up anything DeVos wants, for Howard.

By Lakers doing well, they can justify to the Fans/Media that they don’t need Dwight.
The truth is that Kobe doesn’t want a repeat of the Shaq earned championships in LA.

by jerry25 on Feb 9, 2012 10:52 PM EST up reply actions

But how long will Dwight remain fixated on the Nets?

How long before he and Deron both say **** this and say they will meet in Dallas. The Nets need to start winning.

Dallas has No way to get enough cap space to get Both, even if they started to make cap space before March 15.

They would have to significantly weaken their team just to get Dwight as a FA, and would be without a PG.

no 1 championship with the nets doesnt equal 3 with the lakers

winning in LA and Boston mean something entirely different than winning with another team

Has anyone on the ESPN or TNT telecasts, declared that Howard wouldn't agree to sign extension with Lakers?

They tried to make it seem like an Internet rumor.
Kobe didn’t say much to Peter Vecsey to refute than story.

by 1stnamelastname on Feb 9, 2012 10:56 PM EST up reply actions

All that counts is how Dwight perceived Kobe's remarks in their telephone conversation.

If Dwight got the impression that Kobe wanted to remain as Top Dog, that is what counts, even if Kobe denies saying it directly.

Brandon jennings debate

I understand if people want to argue about jennings vs. Williams but I don’t like that they keep saying that Williams is only shooting 41.1% from the field because as of now according to nba.com, Jennings is shooting 42.6%. I realize in basketball 1.5% difference is bigger than in other places, but it is not a big enough difference to be used in the argument.

New Broussard article Interesting he puts "Dwight Howard has requested a trade to the NJ Nets" without mentioning another team

“Jennings’ desire to play in a more prestigious market follows the league trend that began when LeBron James and Chris Bosh left Cleveland and Toronto, respectively, for Miami in 2010. Since then, Carmelo Anthony has forced a trade from Denver to New York, Chris Paul has forced a trade from New Orleans to Los Angeles, and Orlando’s Dwight Howard has requested that the Magic trade him to the New Jersey Nets, who are moving to Brooklyn next season.”

http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/7560912/milwaukee-bucks-brandon-jennings-doing-homework-big-market-teams

"We're not there yet, but we're going somewhere," Johnson said. "And we're going to Brooklyn. We're not going to contract. We're going to Brooklyn."

D-Will is an definitely an all-star.

You can’t blame him when your 2nd and 3rd best players are out (Brook Lopez, MarShon Brooks) what do you expect, and on that point what do you expect from a team that has Brook Lopez, and Marshon Brooks as their second and third best players. I mean the starting linup against Detroit was D-will, Morrow, Shawne Williams, Kris Humpfries, and Sheldon Williams. I mean for Christ sake Johan Petro is our first big off the bench! Also the Nets have played the most games against 500+ teams in the east (3-14).

Also let's not forget

when he said last week that he can’t wait to move to Brooklyn. I dont see anything about what he’s said all along as “saying the right things.” He has all the right intentions. I’m pretty sure he has learned and seen what the melo drama had caused and lebrick’s soap opera. I dont think he would want to do that to us.
