Deron Williams Is An All-Star
Deron Williams is among the seven Eastern Conference All-Star reserves announced by the NBA on Thursday night. It will be Williams' third (and third straight) All-Star appearance, and his first as a member of the East.
"I am very honored to be selected to this year’s All-Star game," Williams tweeted. "I would like to thank all of the coaches in the Eastern Conference."
He was the only player from a sub-.500 team selected to the East All-Stars.
It's the Nets' 20th All-Star selection since they came to the NBA and their first since Devin Harris in 2009. (Full list after the jump.)
Joining Williams on the list of East reserves is Chris Bosh, Luol Deng, Roy Hibbert, Andre Iguodala, Joe Johnson, and Paul Pierce. The East starters are Derrick Rose, Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony and Dwight Howard.
The All-Star Game will be played on Sunday, Feb.26 and televised on TNT.

congrats to dwill
Well deserved given the slow start. He changed his attitude and is playing very well as of late. Given the injuries and the talent on this roster it really is amazing the numbers he’s put up. Congrats to dwill. Deserved it.
Josh Smith deserved it.
Not Hibbert…c’mon now. Granger over Hibbert. That’s bs.

debatable
ITS A VVVVVVVVVVVVVVCCCCCCCCCCCCCC THREEEEEEEEEE
Well, it obviously is.
You might think you know about basketball, and that’s great, but the coaches voted him in. I’ll take their opinion.
I don’t know much about basketball. The metrics that were constructed by professionals are the best way we have of evaluating performance, though.
You use that BS every time.
1) I like advanced stats as much as the next guy, but the “professionals” (I guess you can call them that) have even said the sample size right now is too small to judge anything accurately.
2) Morey and other “advanced stats” guys have said that teams have access to WAY more information than we do, and a ton of different metrics that we don’t have…because even though 82games, basketballreference, hollinger, w/e are “professionals”, the real professionals are getting paid and working behind the scenes
3) they are not the BEST way to evaluate performance. they are a tool in helping evaluate performance. another great way is watching tape (no, not you are me, although we may try, i’m talking about “professionals”) coaches, assistant coaches, the video guy, they understand the plays, they understand what is REALLY going on, and they “evaluate performance”.
4) so no, “the metrics that were constructed by professionals” and viewed by YOU are not the “best way we have of evaluating performance”, unless WE is YOU, and you don’t want to include the insight of the coaches, who again, have the best tools and ability to actually evaluate performance.
Personally, I think you’re giving the coaches way too much credit. Obviously, I don’t know what they do, but it seems — to me, at least — that they’d be too busy to sit down and conduct a real analysis comparing players who are eligible for the All-Star team.
I assume that they kind of just rattle off names (obviously they know, just from general scouting, which players are having poor and great years) based mostly on reputation. Look: there’s no doubting that when Deron Williams is playing at his best he’s a top-3 point guard in the NBA. The coaches know that; you and I know that. I think, for the most part, that’s the way they approach this: “Oh, Deron Williams? Yeah, he’s a top-tier point guard in this league; he’s gotta be an All-Star.”
Now, I could certainly be wrong, but that’s how I picture it. I don’t think the coaches put that much effort into selecting these reserves. If they did, we wouldn’t have some of these egregious snubs every year.
Just curious: What “BS” are we referring to?
I have seen you writing that Jennings and Kyrie are better suited for the all-star game than Deron and it’s just not true. Well, maybe not untrue, but at least say the other side has a credible argument. You dismiss that instantly and condescendingly, so I’m trying to stand up for the other side.
I love advanced stats and all that, but there is a ton going on behind the scenes we don’t know, including preparing each night for the other team.
We don’t really know the coach’s criteria for who is an all-star, but it might be something along the lines of “when we play that team, how much is our game-plan designed to stop X” or “who would I rather have on my team” or “who is simply having a better year”
I don’t know what it is, and I think we can always talk about who is having a good/bad year, use advanced stats, talk about what we see on the court, etc. but at this point, I think we at least have to acknowledge the argument that the coaches know way more than we do. You write it out like Deron shouldn’t have been considered for more than a second, and this was really a debate between Jennings and Kyrie.
I like them both. I actually followed Jennings in Italy and he is one of my favorite players, so I’m bummed he didn’t make it (I like Deron, but I don’t really care if he makes it or not), but at the end of the day, maybe coaches picked Deron because they’d rather have him (even just for this year, based on this year’s play), or their team works harder to shut him down individually.
Anyway, the BS I’m referring to is using the advances stats as the be-all-end-all in an argument. First of all, people who use advanced stats talk them down a lot; secondly, there is legitimate debate about which stats to use.
So, yeah, that’s pretty much what I was talking about.
First off, when I condescendingly dismiss the other side of the debate, don’t take me seriously. Usually it’s with tongue played firmly in cheek. Of course there’s a case for why Deron Williams should be in the All Star Game. It’s Deron frickin’ Williams.
All BS aside, all I’m saying is that Jennings and Irving have had better years. That’s all I’m saying. Do I believe that they’re better players than Deron Williams? Of course not. Do I honestly believe that they deserve to be All Stars more than Williams? No. The All Star Game isn’t about who’s having a better year, it’s about showing off the league’s best players.
Just for the future: don’t take me too seriously. I’d say about 90% of the time there’s some facetious undertone contained in my post.
Too add: of course, advanced statistics are flawed. They’re far from perfect — there’s always room for improvement. However, I do believe that they’re the best tool we have for drawing a conclusion from a sufficient sample.
They’re not the end-all-be-all, but they’re certainly better than anything else we have at our disposal.
you forget the assists (5pg), and his tem record
2012 Lineup: D-Will - Brooks - AK47 - Lopez - D12... Book it!
Shaq: “You think Lou WIlliams is having a better year than Deron Williams?”

New York Giants Super Bowl XLVI Champions
The TNT “analysts” think Lou Williams should have made it over Deron Williams. Apparently its easy to put up stats when your team is down 20 every night… These guys
Deron padding his stats in losses? Let's check his season splits...
Deron’s point-assists in games won: 26 and 10; 48% FG
In games lost: 18 and 8; 38% FG
Good Deron shows up in wins mostly, not in blow-outs.
They win because good deron shows up
And lose when he doesn’t.
So in theory he could be in the running for MVP if it wasn’t for his high turnover number and that nobody wants MVP to be on a losing team. He’s more valuable to the nets than lebron to the heat
The TNT crew...
Chuck saying that Lou Williams is having a better season than D-Will & also a better player is BS. He’s a 6th man. But Josh Smith should have been the Hawks’ representative.

Deron’s stats don’t lie. Sure the Nets suck but what does that have to do with being voted to play as one of the best players in the league? Key word “player.”
Magic writers got their wish
Dwill is going to orlando to team up with howard, only that he’ll bring him to brooklyn/nj after the game haha
OK
We have an all-star, a guy in the rookie/soph game, a guy who should be in the 3 pt shootout, a coach who has been to the championship and once led the league in winning percentage, a billionaire owner, we are moving to brooklyn, and a legitimate 7 foot center who is easily our second best player.
Doesn’t this all look WAY better on paper?
Meh on Lou Williams. Ask the Sixers fans if Deron played like an All-Star
They probably still remember that game.

This is significant in making DWill happy to be a Net, and getting him to re-sign.
Yep.
Still have to built a quality team next season for him to stay or sign a new contract with us.

I think Tyson is more deserving than Melo...
if Melo wasn’t voted in as starter, would he be given the nod by the coaches?
it would definitely be debatable...
Melo is averaging less points, rebounds, and percentages are down to levels he hasn’t seen since his first few seasons in the league.

The TNT people are full of it (especially Charles) for overweighting the number of wins, in this shortened season.
Charles admitted that TNT was a better player than Rondo.
Charles supported naming Love to All Star game last season, with the worst record.
Contradiction?
Not one TNT person had DWill for All Star game!! Incompetent.
I missed that.
I thought Charles didn’t like losing teams’ players making All Star game.
Kenny said that bottom 4 teams automatically eliminated.
he said he hates when scoring is the main reason a guy gets in
because there are plenty of gunners on bad teams who are going for theirs and not doing jack to win.
with Love he was stuffing the sheet yet you can tell it was his teammates letting him down as to why they were losing. doing 20 and 15 and losing? what you want 30 and 20 instead?

Don’t get me wrong, it would get dicey, but what situation is deron looking to jump to? Dallas as of right now doesn’t look amazing with a aging star player.
Kidd was supposed to be a Spur remember? People run with everything the media says.
I never said Deron is leaving if Dwight doesn't get here.
I don’t know how many people still remember it but Billy King did say that he doesn’t need Dwight for Deron to stay here. He said he could get a player like Iggy, and get Deron to stay.
Deron said he was leaving if Nets don't get Dwight?

by fabol0us16 on Feb 9, 2012 9:11 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Eh.
I don’t think Deron Williams deserved it over Jennings, Irving, Smith or Monroe, but I’m happy for him. Reputation got him in, obviously.
idk man....
ITS A VVVVVVVVVVVVVVCCCCCCCCCCCCCC THREEEEEEEEEE
It's by position
so it was either Jennings/Dwill/Rondo.
I think we can agree no way for Rondo b/c of his time missed.
Jennings/Dwill is a good debate.
you are right sort of
the all star game has become about favoritism instead of talent and winning teams instead of just talent, so maybe deron didn’t deserve it, but he is still putting up good numbers and yea reputation helps
ITS A VVVVVVVVVVVVVVCCCCCCCCCCCCCC THREEEEEEEEEE
Well, if it’s talent, then Deron Williams obviously deserves to make it.
I thought — I repeat: thought — that it was supposed to be heavily dependent on how said player is performing for said year. I mean, Michael Beasley is one of the most talented players in the league, but his production is putrid.
However, I understand that this “game” is more about entertainment than anything; so I understand why we would be apt to put a player like Williams over someone who deserved it more (based on production) like Irving or Jennings.
Well Monroe is the best PG of all time man
Nets Mets Giants All day Every day.
Beware the Lopez
NY Giants Tribute
First of all, his selection should only be compared to PGs
His competition: Irving, Jennings, Rondo
Jennings has played well by his standards, but he’s still not having a better individual season than Deron. Put Jennings on this Nets team, and we won’t even have 8 wins.
Rondo has missed a lot of games, and Boston were struggling early on.
Irving can be argued because his individual statistics are pretty amazing for a rookie. Extremely efficient for a rookie, and it could be argued that he deserved it more. But then again, rookies rarely get an ASG call up. Irving also averages really low assist numbers, not good for a PG.
Woohooo
atleast amare didn’t make it.. i bet people( knicks fans ) are saying he deserved to make it
Random thought..
But Its tough to think how much better this team would be if Dwight came as a free agent and not in a trade.
Lol the Rudolph guy blocked me becuz I called him a joke lmao
When we get Dwight we should all tweet him
THINKING!
What if there we more fans going to the games! I’m always hearing that the nets lack energy! We can give them the energy they need to win (I work and go to school, I want to be at every nets game but sadly I can’t)
LOL, looking at Rudolph's twitter profile
He’s trying to defend his opinions against so many former and current NetsDaily guys right now. I can’t help but feel I started this by posting the Irving over Dwill tweet in the last thread, lol.

Brandon jennings debate
I understand if people want to argue about jennings vs. Williams but I don’t like that they keep saying that Williams is only shooting 41.1% from the field because as of now according to nba.com, Jennings is shooting 42.6%. I realize in basketball 1.5% difference is bigger than in other places, but it is not a big enough difference to be used in the argument.

any publicity
is good publicity for the Nets
New Broussard article Interesting he puts "Dwight Howard has requested a trade to the NJ Nets" without mentioning another team
“Jennings’ desire to play in a more prestigious market follows the league trend that began when LeBron James and Chris Bosh left Cleveland and Toronto, respectively, for Miami in 2010. Since then, Carmelo Anthony has forced a trade from Denver to New York, Chris Paul has forced a trade from New Orleans to Los Angeles, and Orlando’s Dwight Howard has requested that the Magic trade him to the New Jersey Nets, who are moving to Brooklyn next season.”
"We're not there yet, but we're going somewhere," Johnson said. "And we're going to Brooklyn. We're not going to contract. We're going to Brooklyn."
I really do like how Broussard only mentions the Nets as the team D12 requested a trade to.
Even though we all pretty much know that Dwight indeed wants Brooklyn & nothing but Brooklyn. (And D-Will 2)…

You can’t blame him when your 2nd and 3rd best players are out (Brook Lopez, MarShon Brooks) what do you expect, and on that point what do you expect from a team that has Brook Lopez, and Marshon Brooks as their second and third best players. I mean the starting linup against Detroit was D-will, Morrow, Shawne Williams, Kris Humpfries, and Sheldon Williams. I mean for Christ sake Johan Petro is our first big off the bench! “That kid Marshon Brooks is a stud. He’s gonna be a great player.” – Barkley.
Man, the media sure is biased against the Nets. Just great, Charles? Everyone can see he’s going to be the best athlete in the history of sports. Stop “hating” dude.
long time reader, first time poster...
First off let me just say that this is probably the best basketball forum out of all the ones out there. Ive been a Net fan ever since the Jkidd era. The only difference now is that I’ve never been more passionate about this team than I am now. Not only with Dwill’s acquisition last year, but also the move to BK (hopefully) along with D12…
Just like many of you, Ive been following this teams games by listening on an AM radio because im always at work when they play. No matter how bad the team is, and how it gets harder and harder to watch them play, Im a Net fan…
Here are my thoughts regarding this years season… I dont like the knicks lol and even more, the fans… But credit is given where its due, and that is to Lin, and not the knicks… We would of been so much better than the knicks if it wasn’t for brook being injured…
My whole take on the whole dwightmare is that he will end up in a Net uniform. This is why I think so. It’s because trades or what have you do not happen overnight. I’m pretty sure they are already making a deal. Doesnt it surprise you that Dwill hasnt requested a trade yet? I really do believe that him and d12 being friends is an advantage for us… they have been talking all this time just like the big 3 in MIA… All signs point towards BK… Who cares about rumors and what these BSPN analysts report… Only thing we should care about is Dwill and Dwight are friends. They have been in cahoots from going to russia this past summer all the way to that dinner they had in orlando… I realllllllly do firmly believe that they will be in BK… I could care less who we surround them with right now as long as we get them both to BK… Lastly, our front office have been quiet… All they are doing now is just to basically play out the season and that is why we are quick to sign D-leaguers and minimum waged players lol… Billy King knows his job is on the line if we don’t get dwight… I know im trying hard but lets just sit back, relax, and enjoy till the deadline =)

If Dwill leaves, sign Brandon Jennings? Hell yeah!
He’s been saying he’s considering milwaukee for a big market team…Hmmmmm
if D-Will left
I’d want no part of Brandon Jennings.

Riding it out with Dwill...
I cant think of Dwill leaving for some reason. He relocated his whole family here only to what, relocate again? Not to mention the amount of money he will be leaving on the table.
I doubt him having to move again will be a big factor
but the money most likely will be
Also let's not forget
when he said last week that he can’t wait to move to Brooklyn. I dont see anything about what he’s said all along as “saying the right things.” He has all the right intentions. I’m pretty sure he has learned and seen what the melo drama had caused and lebrick’s soap opera. I dont think he would want to do that to us. A team that practically has thrown rose petals on the ground he walks…
NI..

btw, Westbrook is the new turnover king
And he’s on the team with the best record. What’s his excuse?
He has durant,harden,perkins etc...
We have shawne williams and johan petro on this team with our 2nd and 3rd best players out….
he is not a point guard
he played next to collison in college, never been the main ballhandler

Dwight please no trade, I want this kid!!!

MKG
Deron
Marshon
MKG
Dwight
Lopez
= Finals!
It's almost a win-win situation
For us Nets fans. If we don’t get Dwight then we have Dwill and Brook and Swag. If Dwill walks, we have Brook and Swag and a good pick or maybe even someone from this years
Free agency… This team can only get better upon moving to Brooklyn with or without the help of d12/dwill…
