An Ugly Loss Behind Them, Nets Hoping For Best Against Detroit

New Jersey Nets

The Nets had a lot on their mind Tuesday as they reviewed tape of Monday night's debacle against the Bulls. With nine players in uniform, they weren't only short-handed, They were short-sighted, losing players on switches, delivering no-look passes to imaginary friends.

But one thing in particular bothered Kris Humphries: the crowd, which was mostly Bulls fans. He said he was irked by the reception Brian Scalabrine got when he entered the game late in the fourth. "I know Scalabrine played here and they went to the finals, but the fans should be cheering for us, not an ex-Nets player that’s coming in."

In the latest injury report, Keith Bogans has a bruised tailbone, but he'll play Wednesday vs. Detroit. Anthony Morrow will also be back after attending his grandmother's funeral.

Those weren't NJ fans cheering for Scalabrine

it’s just the reality of the situation that Net fans have NO REASON to go to games. None.

Dwight comes, that changes. Until then expect more of the same.

especially against good teams

when we KNOW it’ll turn out like last night. they’ll be nothing redeeming about our team, we’ll be vastly outnumbered in our own arena, and it’ll just be frustrating and a waste of time and money. I was getting pissed just watching it on tv. I imagine if I was there I’d fight someone.

I agree wholeheartedly

This season is difficult to watch with everything going on.

by ZR on Feb 8, 2012 9:38 AM EST up reply actions

Doesn’t the Scalabrine gimmick happen every stadium he plays in? More upsetting was Derrick Rose getting a louder reception than Deron Williams.

by Accelerate on Feb 7, 2012 6:37 PM EST reply actions

Of course Rose is going to get a louder reception

when the arena is 75% “bulls” fans…in reality it’s just a bunch of people who wanted to come out and see Rose and bought cheap tickets.

by NetsKiNG on Feb 7, 2012 6:39 PM EST up reply actions

75% is generous...it was literally at least 85%

Only 2 other Nets fans around me, and another guy that looked like he was all drugged up wearing a Nets jersey but booed the Nets and cheered loudly for the Bulls…

Not surprising

it’s a perfect recipe for a terrible home court advantage:

1. Horrible team
2. Dirt cheap tickets
3. Lame duck status
4. Superstar Player on the other team

I didn’t even think twice about attending that game for obvious reasons.

All that points you made don't mean shoot for A true fan

this bandwagon fans come and go. Reason why NYK has more fans is because of their location, for some reason people in nj just don’t care about the nets they like Knicks more. I wish I could attend more Nets games but I work 3-11 so it’s not given for a lot of people

"woe is me" is not a strategy

Ratner didnt make any money with the Nets. NO TEAM IN PROFESSIONAL SPORTS has as much debt as a proportion of value as the Nets did when Prokhorov took over…$227 million in DEBT = $240 million in VALUE. The next highest debt load among NBA teams was $83 million for the Hornets. They had to sell out to the league.

Fans did not support the Nets in their best years, in spite of what you heard at the Garden one night.

by Net Income on Feb 7, 2012 9:02 PM EST up reply actions

You completely miss the point

The question is why is the fan base so weak, not why is the team history so weak..

Do you think little kids cared about Ratners debt? They lost interest when the team fell apart and they are no longer fans.

The issue was about how this team always had their momentum to build a fan base stunted.

Your take away is woes me is not a plan and Ratner had debt…..smh

by NetProfit on Feb 7, 2012 9:11 PM EST up reply actions

here's what I take away

there was never a fan base in New Jersey.

NEVER.

And if Petrovic wasn’t killed in a car crash, he was going back to play in Europe. Why? Because the Nets couldn’t afford him. Why? Because they were losing money. Why? Because there was no fan base.

Thats false

Petro going back to Europe was a threat to sweeten his NJ deal. Willis Reed was playing the game saying he didnt think that Petro was worth as much as he was asking….The fact is, they were going to resign him. Petro was not going back to Europe. It wasnt even a thought.

Your comment they had no money….Yet they had a HUGE contract for Chuck Daly to be their coach? They gave a big contract to a guy like Jayson Williams? Yet they had no money for Petro?

You really don’t let facts get in the way of your opinion.

Also, they took on Benoint Benjamin…Benoit FREKIN Benjamin and his team high salary that year. So they had no money for Petro???????

Sadly, NetProfit is 100% correct. The Nets had the momentum with those early Kidd years, but, the Rat ruined our growing fan support!

I especially like that they're not limiting this promotion to just the 4 surviving ABA teams

but also shining some light on some old defunct ABA franchises most (including me) have probably never heard of. the ABA had a HUGE part in making the NBA what it is today,so it’s good that awareness its historical significance is being raised (which would also make our two titles – that “don’t count” because they’re in the ABA – actually mean at least something to most people)

The Nets Front office doesn't know how to build a fan base

When the Nets were good in 03 and 04 they had a chance to capitalize off the momentum the team was creating. Instead of the front office reaching out to as many potential fans as possible they alienated them by raising ticket prices to the extent that the average fan couldnt afford.

They’ll do the same thing In Brooklyn, raise ticket prices and alienate their fans. The Nets don’t care about us as fans all they care about is the dollars they can take from our pockets.

by jonnyplastic@yahoo.com on Feb 7, 2012 6:42 PM EST reply actions

The Nets REALLY **** the bed back in the early 2000's

they did virtually nothing to market the team and grow the fan base.

If we had Yormarket back then..oh boy.

by NetsKiNG on Feb 7, 2012 6:43 PM EST up reply actions

Golden opportunity missed

So many young kids wanted to root for the Nets instead of the Knicks but nobody reached out to them. Those young kids eventually become grown men with families who spend money.

by jonnyplastic@yahoo.com on Feb 7, 2012 6:45 PM EST up reply actions

Absolutely

Money was a concern, but the Nets were finally in a position to orient the team as a real (and better) rival to the Knicks, and all that momentum was just lost. No efforts to reach out to NY areas, LI, Westchester, etc. Yormark has clearly learned from that—haven’t they said that they’re pledging to keep ticket prices lower to grow the fanbase in Barclays?

by brother_rat on Feb 7, 2012 6:50 PM EST up reply actions

I think only a smaller segment of prices will be lower

Take a look at the season ticket prices for any worthwhile tickets - they are NOT cheap

by anothernetsfan on Feb 7, 2012 6:52 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I looked that up after I wrote it

You’re right, only a few thousand seats will be that price, but some season ticket packages were supposed to be $55 or lower, and some lower level season tickets will be $65. But all access packages are high, and average seat prices are going way up. Not good for my budget, but hopefully that should sell if we get Deron/Dwight in the building.

by brother_rat on Feb 7, 2012 6:56 PM EST up reply actions

Section 7 (behind players) equivalent

That is running about $300 per game at Brooklyn to put it in perspective. I don’t know how to value the “all-access” concert passes

by anothernetsfan on Feb 7, 2012 6:58 PM EST up reply actions

They got me.

But that was a combination of not knowing much about basketball so my first exposure to a good team in the area was the NBA Finals coverage, and my friend who is a die hard nets fan brought me to a lot of games. I became a nets fan because of media/fan reach out, not anything the organization did.

by ncquake24 on Feb 7, 2012 7:04 PM EST up reply actions

I think part of it was due to the NBA's relative "down period" post-Jordan pre-LeBron

the popularity of the league kind of hit a lull. Back then, most casual sports fans probably didn’t’ even know the Nets were good, let alone going to the finals two years in a row. If we had a team and success like that now (even in NJ, not Brooklyn), it’d be much different, and I think others would take notice.

by sheepareevil on Feb 7, 2012 7:19 PM EST up reply actions

it was SO bad

that the NBA had to take over the entertainment during the playoffs in 2002.

Say what you want about Yormark, but it he ran the show in the mid-2000’s (after two stints with the Nets, first as ticket salesman, second as veep for sponsor sales), they might have built a fan base. MIGHT HAVE because no one knows if anyone could have resusitated the fan base.

The Nets were a small market team and the small market was Bergen County. May as well have called them the Bergen Nets. They didn’t know how to market the team. Everyone talks about Katz and Chambers as owners. They didn’t put down the money needed to promote and market the team when they were on top.

They never just do something because it’s the right thing to do. It annoys the hell out of me when they make that PA announcement about giving away tickets who couldn’t otherwise afford them. Is that really neccessary?

by William_H_HOLLA on Feb 7, 2012 9:21 PM EST up reply actions

I hate to say it...

But it’s near impossible for a NJ team near NYC to compete on fanbases of Chicago or other big cities. There are a lot of rich people in NYC from other cities that cheer for Bulls, Boston, etc and will make the trek out to see them. NY Knicks tickets are TOO expensive so no one will buy them, hence they come out here. It’s unfortunate but the only solution is Brooklyn. You need a NY fan base this close to the city.

by anothernetsfan on Feb 7, 2012 6:44 PM EST reply actions

Have you seen the prices?

They are much much more expensive than Prudential and there isn’t a discount. They’re pretty much 30% off Knicks ticket prices, so about 2.5x Prudential. I think you’ll get your wish, though a lot will be corporate. If the 3D seating chart is right, the viewing angles will be a lot better so the less expensive sections will have a much better experience, which is a big deal

by NetsKiNG on Feb 7, 2012 6:48 PM EST up reply actions

that's the main problem

being in the NY-metro area sounds good on paper because you have a huge market and populace to market to, but not so good in effect when most of those people only go to your games when you’re playing a nationally popular team. that’s why we get things like the reversible jerseys

by sheepareevil on Feb 7, 2012 7:20 PM EST up reply actions

Let’s hope after the move, we can create a vibe like those special arenas. But let’s face it, even when we were going to the finals, we never had one of those special vibes that most arenas have. It has come back to haunt us. All these years we thought mass transportation would help us, however, we went closer to the city. We should have moved closer to New Brunswick. Central Jersey is where you would see major support rather quickly.

I am still skeptical about the support this team will receive in Brooklyn atleast for the first couple of years. Unless, we change our fortunes sooner rather than later. Winning cures apathy.

Obviously the crowd situation is not a good thing if you are a Nets player. Everybody wants the home crowd advantage and the Nets don’t have that right now.

But Kris Humphries is totally out of line with that statement. Even if the stadium was 100% Nets fans Scalabrine should get a nice applause. Maybe not an overwhelming roar but he should get some respect. Just like I would cheer for Kidd, Kmart or Jefferson or Carter or anybody that has helped this franchise in a positive way.

Just my opinion.

by jah_moon on Feb 7, 2012 6:54 PM EST reply actions

Of course he wasn't

But…Utah never had a situation like this around acquiring a superstar like Dwight Howard. Never, and it’s partially his fault.

by ZR on Feb 8, 2012 9:46 AM EST up reply actions

Just to clarify, I shut the game off waaay before a Scalabrine sighting so I don’t know the situation. When I said I would cheer for these players I mean on introduction or first check in…not when they score buckets.

I assume Hump meant they were cheering for him when he scored which is an absolute no-no. So I think I spoke to soon and misunderstood what he meant since I couldn’t actually watch that horrible game. :P

by jah_moon on Feb 7, 2012 6:59 PM EST up reply actions

it was way more than that

he was getting MVP chants at the free throw line, and loud too. I think that’d happen anywhere in a blowout though, and both Bulls fans and the few Nets fans that stuck around love Scalabrine. he’s the NBA’s fan favorite and he gets that everywhere he goes.

by sheepareevil on Feb 7, 2012 7:23 PM EST up reply actions

MVP really?

Ok that’s a bit too much.

Not to mention that it’s kinda sad in a way how the fans treat Scalabrine like he’s some novelty act. I hated it when he was in NJ and I still hate it. Don’t get me wrong I love the guy, but he’s more that just a novelty. Anybody who knows bball knows that Scalabrine can really play ball.

by jah_moon on Feb 7, 2012 7:40 PM EST up reply actions

It may feel that way

but I think most people who follow the game and start the “Scal-a-brine!” chants are doing it out of genuine admiration for him as a player and person. Part of the reason people love him is because he’s a chubby red-head in the NBA, of course, but it’s not a “they’re all just laughing at him” thing. People really do like his attitude, hard-work, and sense of team, and like to see him rewarded with playing time and admiration from the crowd.

by sheepareevil on Feb 7, 2012 7:49 PM EST up reply actions

Why?

Scalabrine wasnt a key player on either EC championship team. Why does he deserve such respect? And he wasn’t being cheered by Nets fans. he wasn’t being cheered by Bulls fans knowing his entry meant the game was done. He is the human cigar.

The applause for scalabrine was way over the top but you cant blame the fans. Had it been a game within 20 points, the crown would never cheer for him. I guess it was a blowout and fans just wanted to have un so we cheered for Scalabrine who is a fan favorite.

I'll be there tomorrow

Other team’s fans coming to the game is what it is. Very few teams don’t have to worry about this, and as an example, there was a huge Bulls crowd at the Knicks game in the Garden.

Big time teams have fans that come out. Winning helps this.

But I’m not staying home because I’m worried about other fans. That seems almost hypocritical.

I think he may be included in the Dwight deal if Orlando demands him, because lopez needs a rebounding sidekick by his side. if not, hump will ask for more money than we can give him since turkoglu and duhon will eat away the rest of our cap space.

Yeah the attendance really been showing this year

But the Nets have to win some games, although it should go without saying. I mean as soon the ref tips the ball the Nets are already down 20. SMH. Who the hell wants to cheer for that?

I was at the Thunder game a few weeks ago. And yep you guessed it there were a lot of Thunder fans because they win, they make a lot of good, exciting plays. When was the last time someone threw an alley-oop to someone else on the Nets? It’s been a long while. They dont make any splash plays. Its a lot slow it down, we know we’re very that good basketball and they still lose. That doesn’t appeal to anybody.

I idea of homecourt is to have rowdy fans to help the team win...

This unfortuately never happens except for the Kidd-Era. Win or Lose Nets fans should cheer to give the energy for players to play their hearts out to try to win.

By trade deadline we might be in such a big hole that it might not be possible to make playoffs. Plus with new players it might not be easy to make a run. Can we assume that this season is just a formality?

We’ve already seen that Irving is one of the best isolation players in the NBA when looking to score. But Irving deserves more credit for his passing out of isolation situations. Right now, Irving’s teammates shoot 66.7 percent while posting 1.357 points per possession after Irving finds them out of a one-on-one play. That puts Irving in the top 10 percent of all NBA players. Combine that with Irving’s scoring numbers and his overall isolation PPP comes to 1.129, which is in the NBA’s 98th percentile. Twenty-two games into his pro career, Irving is already playing like an elite NBA point guard.

Kyrie, Tyreke, Thad Young, Serge Ibaka, McGee, Mike Conley Jr, Brandon Jennings, Rubio, Gallinari, Steph Curry, DeMarcus Cousins, Dejuan Blair, Ty Lawson are all higher than Lopez.

I don’t know what the criteria is exactly…they say “how they played in past seasons, including college in some cases, how they are playing today and how they might play in the future. The player’s team success also factors in, and consideration was given to players surrounded with poor talent, poor coaching or poor management.”

So pretty much whatever they want…regardless…ridiculous list.

by SadNetsFan on Feb 7, 2012 10:16 PM EST up reply actions

Well now I have to disagree with some of that

Thad Young is a no, Blair is a no. Tyreke is debatable, McGee is debatable, Conley is somewhat debatable but I’m not outraged over it, Gallo is debatable

by muwu on Feb 7, 2012 10:19 PM EST up reply actions

Again, on what criteria? Is it “who is more valuable to a team”? Is it, who had a better year the last time they played?

Tyreke has tons of potential but has been a train wreck…Thad Young fills his role, I’d rather have him than Tyreke anyway.

Blair is a good player…McGee is an idiot, just an idiot. Athleticism doesn’t mean everything.

Conley is a very good point guard in my opinion, but they are a dime a dozen, Lopez is a scoring C.

Gallo, now hurt, is a scoring SF, and brings a lot of value to his team, but again, what is the comparison? I don’t know how to judge a SF, SG, PF against a C

by SadNetsFan on Feb 7, 2012 10:21 PM EST up reply actions

I’m not disagreeing with you, I just don’t really know how they actually judged it…They can’t just say “best under 25”…best for what?

Blair and Young are not.

by NJ Champ on Feb 7, 2012 10:25 PM EST via Android app up reply actions

I’m asking, is Gallo just “better” than Brook? Today would you trade Gallo for Brook 1-1? Would any GM? Starting a team from scratch would you honestly rather have Gallo? Who is more important to their team?

by d2d on Feb 7, 2012 10:12 PM EST reply actions

This should be Nets strategy for Brooklyn...

They NEED to field a good team this coming year while the Knicks are pretty bad. This is how I see it. There are 2.5M people in the Brooklyn area, this is not counting the Queens and Long Island area. Now almost everyone in some form or fashion today is a Knicks fan (which is fundamental problem again with the NJ location because your near a city where you had 0 chance of attracting any NYers).

NYers are fickle (trust me I am) - they boo when their team sucks and they’ll jump on the Giants or Jets when they need to. So basically… they just need to have a good team, out of the gates. Then all of the Brooklyn population will suddenly “love” their hometown Nets and the rest is history. People also hate Dolan and if Thomas comes back as GM in some freak-show way, it’s over. It would have been great to have gotten a Jeremy Lin because the whole Asian community would have rallied behind him. They need something to latch onto and it CAN NOT be a rebuild year. Dwight or bust is more true than ever.

I understand Hump's frustration

but at the same time, when you guys go out there and embarrass yourselves, what do you expect? Hugs? Applause for going through the motions?

The Nets have collectively done everything within their power over the last 30 years to ensure that they don’t have a viable fanbase in this state. People can sit here and dishonestly blame the fans all they want, but for the most part the product has been complete garbage. That’s not our fault, nor should we be expected to sit there and blindly support a franchise that has not given a damn about what product they throw on the floor, especially during these last three seasons.

I know a few people who went to that Bulls game and I was embarrassed by what was said to me afterwards. How do you root for that? I know someone that left at halftime because the game was unwatchable. It is what it is, the Nets players need to stop complaining. Play hard every game and stop getting annihilated, and maybe people will have your backs. Injuries are no excuse for a lack of effort.

To be fair though, I read the entire Hump quote and he also mentioned that the Nets have to win games to not get a response like that. At least he’s honest.
