An Ugly Loss Behind Them, Nets Hoping For Best Against Detroit
The Nets had a lot on their mind Tuesday as they reviewed tape of Monday night's debacle against the Bulls. With nine players in uniform, they weren't only short-handed, They were short-sighted, losing players on switches, delivering no-look passes to imaginary friends.
But one thing in particular bothered Kris Humphries: the crowd, which was mostly Bulls fans. He said he was irked by the reception Brian Scalabrine got when he entered the game late in the fourth. "I know Scalabrine played here and they went to the finals, but the fans should be cheering for us, not an ex-Nets player that’s coming in."
In the latest injury report, Keith Bogans has a bruised tailbone, but he'll play Wednesday vs. Detroit. Anthony Morrow will also be back after attending his grandmother's funeral.

Those weren't NJ fans cheering for Scalabrine
it’s just the reality of the situation that Net fans have NO REASON to go to games. None.
Dwight comes, that changes. Until then expect more of the same.
especially against good teams
when we KNOW it’ll turn out like last night. they’ll be nothing redeeming about our team, we’ll be vastly outnumbered in our own arena, and it’ll just be frustrating and a waste of time and money. I was getting pissed just watching it on tv. I imagine if I was there I’d fight someone.
I agree wholeheartedly
This season is difficult to watch with everything going on.

Doesn’t the Scalabrine gimmick happen every stadium he plays in? More upsetting was Derrick Rose getting a louder reception than Deron Williams.
Of course Rose is going to get a louder reception
when the arena is 75% “bulls” fans…in reality it’s just a bunch of people who wanted to come out and see Rose and bought cheap tickets.
75% is generous...it was literally at least 85%
Only 2 other Nets fans around me, and another guy that looked like he was all drugged up wearing a Nets jersey but booed the Nets and cheered loudly for the Bulls…
Winning is everything...Losing is not an option...
Section 4, Row 12...last season at The Rock...
Not surprising
it’s a perfect recipe for a terrible home court advantage:
1. Horrible team
2. Dirt cheap tickets
3. Lame duck status
4. Superstar Player on the other team
I didn’t even think twice about attending that game for obvious reasons.
All that points you made don't mean shoot for A true fan
this bandwagon fans come and go. Reason why NYK has more fans is because of their location, for some reason people in nj just don’t care about the nets they like Knicks more. I wish I could attend more Nets games but I work 3-11 so it’s not given for a lot of people

Its not for "some reason"
You have to look at the history….Most people now in their 40’s, their parents were Knick fans. The Nets didnt exist for them, the Knicks did…A lot of kids are influenced by their parents so when the Nets came into the fold, they started to build something…THEN….sold their identity and their fan loyalty to make it into the NBA..
They toiled until they got Buck, Albert King, Birdsong, MRRichardson, GMan, and cast…They started to play very exciting, winning basketball, then their coach quits…The forge ahead, then MRR lapses into drugs and the team is destroyed…
The run was not long enough to gain fan loyalty.
Then they go on to years of horrible play. Put teams together that play starters like Joe Barely Cares and Walter Berry who get traded for like a day before the season starts and get “introduced” on the floor on opening night…Pick up a Pearl that was more like a stone, miss badly with a can’t miss Hopson, draft a guy “crazier than Barkely”, and assemble a mess….Even with KAnderson and Coleman, they were underachievers until finally, we got a guy who we could all rally around. A guy so good, we finally had a top 10 potential NBA talent. The best shooter, one of the most charasmatic, a guy who everyone loved…The type of guy who could “turn knick fans to Net fans”…..and he tragically dies on the autobon. The team sinks back into oblivion, chaos, and foolishness…
We finally get our break, draft KMart, steal the best point guard in the league for a guy no one wanted to play with, come together as one of the most exciting teams, finally, I see KMart, Kidd, and Jefferson jerseys on the street. More Net than Knick fans in the swamps of Jersey…..I actually heard “LETS GO NETS” …IN THE GARDEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was the perfect storm, The Nets were on the rise, the Knicks sucked….Fans were being won, kids were wearing Nets jerseys..a whol group of kids, (who now would be about 20ish) were coming up NET fans….
Then,…………………….the RAT……
He tore this team to shreads, slashing and saving, and ruining the momentum and fan base built on the will of Jason Kidd.
Back to hell for the franchise…..
EVERY SINGLE TIME this team started to turn the corner, it’s been smacked down with no longevity of excellent play that allowed for the roots to take hold of a strong fan base.
I submit to you, if Drazen Petrovic was not in that car, that evening, things would have been VERY different for this franchise.

"woe is me" is not a strategy
Ratner didnt make any money with the Nets. NO TEAM IN PROFESSIONAL SPORTS has as much debt as a proportion of value as the Nets did when Prokhorov took over…$227 million in DEBT = $240 million in VALUE. The next highest debt load among NBA teams was $83 million for the Hornets. They had to sell out to the league.
Fans did not support the Nets in their best years, in spite of what you heard at the Garden one night.

You completely miss the point
The question is why is the fan base so weak, not why is the team history so weak..
Do you think little kids cared about Ratners debt? They lost interest when the team fell apart and they are no longer fans.
The issue was about how this team always had their momentum to build a fan base stunted.
Your take away is woes me is not a plan and Ratner had debt…..smh
here's what I take away
there was never a fan base in New Jersey.
NEVER.
And if Petrovic wasn’t killed in a car crash, he was going back to play in Europe. Why? Because the Nets couldn’t afford him. Why? Because they were losing money. Why? Because there was no fan base.

Thats false
Petro going back to Europe was a threat to sweeten his NJ deal. Willis Reed was playing the game saying he didnt think that Petro was worth as much as he was asking….The fact is, they were going to resign him. Petro was not going back to Europe. It wasnt even a thought.
Your comment they had no money….Yet they had a HUGE contract for Chuck Daly to be their coach? They gave a big contract to a guy like Jayson Williams? Yet they had no money for Petro?
You really don’t let facts get in the way of your opinion.

Sadly, NetProfit is 100% correct. The Nets had the momentum with those early Kidd years, but, the Rat ruined our growing fan support!
Since Kidd has left, we have sucked for three years and we are moving. Two things that New Jerseyans have a hard time overlooking.

Fans don’t come to Nets game to see the Nets, they come to see the team they are playing against. Brett Yormark knows this…that’s why he markets reversible jerseys of other teams players.

I especially like that they're not limiting this promotion to just the 4 surviving ABA teams
but also shining some light on some old defunct ABA franchises most (including me) have probably never heard of. the ABA had a HUGE part in making the NBA what it is today,so it’s good that awareness its historical significance is being raised (which would also make our two titles – that “don’t count” because they’re in the ABA – actually mean at least something to most people)

The Nets Front office doesn't know how to build a fan base
When the Nets were good in 03 and 04 they had a chance to capitalize off the momentum the team was creating. Instead of the front office reaching out to as many potential fans as possible they alienated them by raising ticket prices to the extent that the average fan couldnt afford.
They’ll do the same thing In Brooklyn, raise ticket prices and alienate their fans. The Nets don’t care about us as fans all they care about is the dollars they can take from our pockets.
by jonnyplastic@yahoo.com on Feb 7, 2012 6:42 PM EST reply actions
The Nets REALLY **** the bed back in the early 2000's
they did virtually nothing to market the team and grow the fan base.
If we had Yormarket back then..oh boy.
Golden opportunity missed
So many young kids wanted to root for the Nets instead of the Knicks but nobody reached out to them. Those young kids eventually become grown men with families who spend money.
by jonnyplastic@yahoo.com on Feb 7, 2012 6:45 PM EST up reply actions
Absolutely
Money was a concern, but the Nets were finally in a position to orient the team as a real (and better) rival to the Knicks, and all that momentum was just lost. No efforts to reach out to NY areas, LI, Westchester, etc. Yormark has clearly learned from that—haven’t they said that they’re pledging to keep ticket prices lower to grow the fanbase in Barclays?
I think only a smaller segment of prices will be lower
Take a look at the season ticket prices for any worthwhile tickets - they are NOT cheap
by anothernetsfan on Feb 7, 2012 6:52 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah, I looked that up after I wrote it
You’re right, only a few thousand seats will be that price, but some season ticket packages were supposed to be $55 or lower, and some lower level season tickets will be $65. But all access packages are high, and average seat prices are going way up. Not good for my budget, but hopefully that should sell if we get Deron/Dwight in the building.
Section 7 (behind players) equivalent
That is running about $300 per game at Brooklyn to put it in perspective. I don’t know how to value the “all-access” concert passes
by anothernetsfan on Feb 7, 2012 6:58 PM EST up reply actions
They got me.
But that was a combination of not knowing much about basketball so my first exposure to a good team in the area was the NBA Finals coverage, and my friend who is a die hard nets fan brought me to a lot of games. I became a nets fan because of media/fan reach out, not anything the organization did.
I think part of it was due to the NBA's relative "down period" post-Jordan pre-LeBron
the popularity of the league kind of hit a lull. Back then, most casual sports fans probably didn’t’ even know the Nets were good, let alone going to the finals two years in a row. If we had a team and success like that now (even in NJ, not Brooklyn), it’d be much different, and I think others would take notice.
it was SO bad
that the NBA had to take over the entertainment during the playoffs in 2002.
Say what you want about Yormark, but it he ran the show in the mid-2000’s (after two stints with the Nets, first as ticket salesman, second as veep for sponsor sales), they might have built a fan base. MIGHT HAVE because no one knows if anyone could have resusitated the fan base.
The Nets were a small market team and the small market was Bergen County. May as well have called them the Bergen Nets. They didn’t know how to market the team. Everyone talks about Katz and Chambers as owners. They didn’t put down the money needed to promote and market the team when they were on top.

I hate to say it...
But it’s near impossible for a NJ team near NYC to compete on fanbases of Chicago or other big cities. There are a lot of rich people in NYC from other cities that cheer for Bulls, Boston, etc and will make the trek out to see them. NY Knicks tickets are TOO expensive so no one will buy them, hence they come out here. It’s unfortunate but the only solution is Brooklyn. You need a NY fan base this close to the city.
Have you seen the prices?
They are much much more expensive than Prudential and there isn’t a discount. They’re pretty much 30% off Knicks ticket prices, so about 2.5x Prudential. I think you’ll get your wish, though a lot will be corporate. If the 3D seating chart is right, the viewing angles will be a lot better so the less expensive sections will have a much better experience, which is a big deal
by anothernetsfan on Feb 7, 2012 6:48 PM EST up reply actions
that's the main problem
being in the NY-metro area sounds good on paper because you have a huge market and populace to market to, but not so good in effect when most of those people only go to your games when you’re playing a nationally popular team. that’s why we get things like the reversible jerseys
Let’s hope after the move, we can create a vibe like those special arenas. But let’s face it, even when we were going to the finals, we never had one of those special vibes that most arenas have. I’ve gone to games when we were good, and half the place was empty, let’s face it, Jersey is just not a basketball town.

It has come back to haunt us. All these years we thought mass transportation would help us, however, we went closer to the city. We should have moved closer to New Brunswick. Central Jersey is where you would see major support rather quickly.
I am still skeptical about the support this team will receive in Brooklyn atleast for the first couple of years. Unless, we change our fortunes sooner rather than later. Winning cures apathy.
LETS GO NETS!
Obviously the crowd situation is not a good thing if you are a Nets player. Everybody wants the home crowd advantage and the Nets don’t have that right now.
But Kris Humphries is totally out of line with that statement. Even if the stadium was 100% Nets fans Scalabrine should get a nice applause. Maybe not an overwhelming roar but he should get some respect. Just like I would cheer for Kidd, Kmart or Jefferson or Carter or anybody that has helped this franchise in a positive way.
Just my opinion.
Of course he wasn't
But…Utah never had a situation like this around acquiring a superstar like Dwight Howard. Never, and it’s partially his fault.
by ZR on Feb 8, 2012 9:46 AM EST up reply actions
Just to clarify, I shut the game off waaay before a Scalabrine sighting so I don’t know the situation. When I said I would cheer for these players I mean on introduction or first check in…not when they score buckets.
I assume Hump meant they were cheering for him when he scored which is an absolute no-no. So I think I spoke to soon and misunderstood what he meant since I couldn’t actually watch that horrible game. :P
it was way more than that
he was getting MVP chants at the free throw line, and loud too. I think that’d happen anywhere in a blowout though, and both Bulls fans and the few Nets fans that stuck around love Scalabrine. he’s the NBA’s fan favorite and he gets that everywhere he goes.
MVP really?
Ok that’s a bit too much.
Not to mention that it’s kinda sad in a way how the fans treat Scalabrine like he’s some novelty act. I hated it when he was in NJ and I still hate it. Don’t get me wrong I love the guy, but he’s more that just a novelty. Anybody who knows bball knows that Scalabrine can really play ball.
It may feel that way
but I think most people who follow the game and start the “Scal-a-brine!” chants are doing it out of genuine admiration for him as a player and person. Part of the reason people love him is because he’s a chubby red-head in the NBA, of course, but it’s not a “they’re all just laughing at him” thing. People really do like his attitude, hard-work, and sense of team, and like to see him rewarded with playing time and admiration from the crowd.
Why?
Scalabrine wasnt a key player on either EC championship team. Why does he deserve such respect? And he wasn’t being cheered by Nets fans. he wasn’t being cheered by Bulls fans knowing his entry meant the game was done. He is the human cigar.

there is like multiple wolves fans at the game according to the post...
Dwight or bust....
Superbowl or bust...
Yeah the attendance really been showing this year
But the Nets have to win some games, although it should go without saying. I mean as soon the ref tips the ball the Nets are already down 20. SMH. Who the hell wants to cheer for that?
I was at the Thunder game a few weeks ago. And yep you guessed it there were a lot of Thunder fans because they win, they make a lot of good, exciting plays. When was the last time someone threw an alley-oop to someone else on the Nets? It’s been a long while. They dont make any splash plays. Its a lot slow it down, we know we’re very that good basketball and they still lose. That doesn’t appeal to anybody.
I idea of homecourt is to have rowdy fans to help the team win...
This unfortuately never happens except for the Kidd-Era. Win or Lose Nets fans should cheer to give the energy for players to play their hearts out to try to win.

That is why we all have to scoop up the tickets on stubhub
Spend a few bucks more to help nutrilize the Knick fans that will be there. I’ve got my tickets. If you guys haven’t, do it right now.

Can nets make to playoffs if they get dh12??
By trade deadline we might be in such a big hole that it might not be possible to make playoffs. Plus with new players it might not be easy to make a run. Can we assume that this season is just a formality?
I think the Nets can still hope for an 8th seed if Dwight gets traded within the season, 27-28 wins is probably the best you can hope for
Might be?
I dont expect Brooks back to game 30, Lopez back to game 35.
"It's as sweet as it ever was, I'll tell you. Now, hopefully, we started something and we can win some more championships, but we're going to enjoy this one right now. Have a little champagne." --Julius Erving, May 12, 1976, ABA champion Nets locker room.
Our Stratergy going forward
This season we shouldn’t try for the playoffs push unless it’s possible. We need to cut a deal with Orlando in such a way that we either give brooks or our 1st rounder. I think b Lopez, brooks, our 1st and rockets ist are a bit more even for dh12.
Fans have suffered enough. Can we please have a clear Stratergy for next year? I hope nets FO is smart.
I know it seems like he shoots a lot - h'es nver taken more than 14 shots
and that was once.
Playing with Deron and Howard, could be different – and Deron is in control of the offense. It could work and we could use a dynamic wing player who can run with Deron and finish around and above the rim.
Nice imagine miami getting the first seed
And facing us in the first round if that happens… Dwill Dwight vs Lebron Wade Bosh
Can we just fast forward to next season, New Arena and a team that’s not thinking about the draft 20 games into the season

My prediction with lopez and brooks, without Dwight
We are currently 8-18
@DETROIT 9-18
DETROIT 10-18
Spurs 10-19
Memphis 10-20
@INDIANA 10-21
@CHICAGO 10-22
Milwuakee 11-22
@NY 12-22
Orlando 12-23
@Dallas 12-24
@BOSTON 12-25
@Charlotte 13-25
@Miami 13-26
Clippers 13-27
Houston 13-28
Milwuakee 14-28
Toronto 15-28
That is what will be if we get dwight, with lopez and brooks playing imo.
Toughest teams after that are Orlando, Atlanta, Utah, Indiana, Lakers, portland, 76ers twice, boston,miami,new york, and philly again. If we win a bit more than half of these games we would be 33-33, winning all the others, which are mostly below 500 teams
hopefully better than that though. We can beat the spurs, Grizzles, and pacers we almost beat, bulls we always beat once, we can beat dallas, boston, we can also beat clippers and rockets
Yea, some games we could win
If we win half of the games I put as losses, we would be in a decent position
With Dwight, assuming we lose lopez
Orlando 16-28
new orleans 17-28
cleveland 18-28
washington 19-28
@ atlanta 20-28
charloote 21-28
utah 22-28
indiana 23-28
@GS 24-28
@sac 25-28
@lakers 26-28
@portland 27-28
washington 28-28
cleveland 29-28
philly 30-28
@philly 30-29
boston 31-29
miami 31-30
ny 32-30
@milwuake 33-30
philly 34-30
@ tornoto 35-30
I dont know where i lost a game.. but yea, pretty much what should happen
NO WAY we beat the Hawks, Jazz, Pacers, Lakers, Blazers, Sixers, Celtics, OR Heat even WITH Howard.

Pekovic is 9-for-11 from the field thus far with 23 and 8. Then, of course, Lin.

We’ve already seen that Irving is one of the best isolation players in the NBA when looking to score. But Irving deserves more credit for his passing out of isolation situations. Right now, Irving’s teammates shoot 66.7 percent while posting 1.357 points per possession after Irving finds them out of a one-on-one play. That puts Irving in the top 10 percent of all NBA players. Combine that with Irving’s scoring numbers and his overall isolation PPP comes to 1.129, which is in the NBA’s 98th percentile. Twenty-two games into his pro career, Irving is already playing like an elite NBA point guard.

Beware the Lopez

Kyrie, Tyreke, Thad Young, Serge Ibaka, McGee, Mike Conley Jr, Brandon Jennings, Rubio, Gallinari, Steph Curry, DeMarcus Cousins, Dejuan Blair, Ty Lawson are all higher than Lopez.
I don’t know what the criteria is exactly…they say “how they played in past seasons, including college in some cases, how they are playing today and how they might play in the future. The player’s team success also factors in, and consideration was given to players surrounded with poor talent, poor coaching or poor management.”
So pretty much whatever they want…regardless…ridiculous list.
Well now I have to disagree with some of that
Thad Young is a no, Blair is a no. Tyreke is debatable, McGee is debatable, Conley is somewhat debatable but I’m not outraged over it, Gallo is debatable
Again, on what criteria? Is it “who is more valuable to a team”? Is it, who had a better year the last time they played?
Tyreke has tons of potential but has been a train wreck…Thad Young fills his role, I’d rather have him than Tyreke anyway.
Blair is a good player…McGee is an idiot, just an idiot. Athleticism doesn’t mean everything.
Conley is a very good point guard in my opinion, but they are a dime a dozen, Lopez is a scoring C.
Gallo, now hurt, is a scoring SF, and brings a lot of value to his team, but again, what is the comparison? I don’t know how to judge a SF, SG, PF against a C
Gallo is understanable.
Blair and Young are not.

Note to Billy King and Avery Johnson:
Please purchase a lifetime supply of Sheets energy Strips and give them to our players before every 1st and 2nd half so they can play with more fire.
PS: Dont waste time giving Johan Petro any. He will probably drop the Sheet out of bounds anyway or go give some Sheets to the other team by mistake.

Could there be any interest in JR Smith from the Nets?
He is a Knicks target but reportedly he wants to showcase his skills and doesnt think he can do so with Melo as he has played with him before.
Brooks will almost surely be going to ORL.. we could use Smith
Marshon VS Iman: Bring the rivalry on my nuiikkkass!!!
This should be an immediate red flag - " wants to showcase his skills"
Isn’t that code for playing like he’s better than he actually is AKA chucking bad shots? He may be scoring 60 in China, but he won’t do that in the NBA
we could use a lot of things
we’re not going after any of them until we get dwight tho
why would JR smith come here over other options, at least currently – i dont see it
He wants to start and set himself up for a payday.
He would be a major go to guy here.

This should be Nets strategy for Brooklyn...
They NEED to field a good team this coming year while the Knicks are pretty bad. This is how I see it. There are 2.5M people in the Brooklyn area, this is not counting the Queens and Long Island area. Now almost everyone in some form or fashion today is a Knicks fan (which is fundamental problem again with the NJ location because your near a city where you had 0 chance of attracting any NYers).
NYers are fickle (trust me I am) - they boo when their team sucks and they’ll jump on the Giants or Jets when they need to. So basically… they just need to have a good team, out of the gates. Then all of the Brooklyn population will suddenly “love” their hometown Nets and the rest is history. People also hate Dolan and if Thomas comes back as GM in some freak-show way, it’s over. It would have been great to have gotten a Jeremy Lin because the whole Asian community would have rallied behind him. They need something to latch onto and it CAN NOT be a rebuild year. Dwight or bust is more true than ever.
Lol thanks for mentioning the asian community. I’m going to take a wild guess and assume your asian as well.

I assume it's been asked, but I missed it.
Is there a reason that Deron Williams chooses to wear a T-Shirt (instead of a scrim jersey) during practice? He also wears a T-Shirt instead of warmups during the game.
I wonder what the reaction would be if Johan Petro asked Avery Johnson if he could wear a T-Shift instead of a jersey. Would be funny to watch.

Jamison could be had for cheap
and could mentor a young pickup in the draft, provided we don’t trade them all for Dwight. Wouldn’t cripple long term flexibility for a 1 – 2 year deal. I like
Wallace will be too expensive
Beasley could still turn it around, but I can’t trust him right now. He loves to chuck bad shots and he’s not a contributor on defense. You’re better off with Hedo
Humphries article..
..reminded me of why he should be right up there next to Dwight when he comes. Perfect mentality.
I go to these games and it is embarassing
But the fact is they don’t win games and lose games by 20 points at home. Don’t worry about the fans worry about the product you put on the floor.
It's all about winning
The house ain’t gonna rock itself. They gotta rock the house, then fans will start showing up. Even the Sixers are starting to fill up their place.

I understand Hump's frustration
but at the same time, when you guys go out there and embarrass yourselves, what do you expect? Hugs? Applause for going through the motions?
The Nets have collectively done everything within their power over the last 30 years to ensure that they don’t have a viable fanbase in this state. People can sit here and dishonestly blame the fans all they want, but for the most part the product has been complete garbage. That’s not our fault, nor should we be expected to sit there and blindly support a franchise that has not given a damn about what product they throw on the floor, especially during these last three seasons.
I know a few people who went to that Bulls game and I was embarrassed by what was said to me afterwards. How do you root for that? I know someone that left at halftime because the game was unwatchable. It is what it is, the Nets players need to stop complaining. Play hard every game and stop getting annihilated, and maybe people will have your backs. Injuries are no excuse for a lack of effort.
To be fair though, I read the entire Hump quote and he also mentioned that the Nets have to win games to not get a response like that. At least he’s honest.
