Bulls Crush Short-Handed Nets For the Second Time

Though Derrick Rose left early in the second quarter with back spasms, the Chicago Bulls picked up their second easy win over the Nets at the Prudential Center on Monday night.

The Bulls scored seven points before the Nets even took a shot and led by double-figures less than five minutes into the first quarter. The Nets were down by 20 late in the first quarter and by 30 early in the third.

Chicago shot 56 percent from the field and 9-for-15 from 3-point range. They were led by Carlos Boozer and Luol Deng, who combined for 43 points on 17-for-30 from the field. The Nets shot just 41 percent and were led by Deron Williams, who scored 25 points on 8-for-16, also dishing out five assists. Williams was one of nine players in (retro New York Nets) uniform Monday.

How about the Nets haven't given fans any reason to go to games.

I remember in 00-05 the place was packed I remember being a kid and seeing the place jam packed with Nets fans and this was in the Izod Center, a less accessible place than the Rock.During the beginning of the season the place was pretty full, especially the home opener but the Nets had a poor showing and fans just stopped going. Fans were proud to be rooting for the Nets, yes you might say you aren’t a fan if you don’t stick with the team through thick and thin but there are some out there, like us, die hard Nets fans. It isn’t fair to NJ Nets fans to be generalizing them into a group of unsupportive fans I’ve seen and had so many memories of the Nets being a 9-21 year old. Once they play good, they will come. (Field of Dreams)

The Nets couldn’t sell out playoff games including the Finals during the Kidd era, that’s embarrassing.

by JimmyLips on Feb 6, 2012 11:03 PM EST up reply actions

there was still more than what we see now and I feel like that was the height of Nets fandom.

by baronkadonk on Feb 6, 2012 11:07 PM EST up reply actions

It's true I went to both finals.

I’m a huge Nets fan from NJ and have gone to a ton of games since I was a kid and honestly when I go to games against the Lakers and Heat and there are more fans rooting for them than the Nets I am embarrassed and feel bad for the team. I fully support the move to Brooklyn and I really hope the fans support them more there.

by NetsROC on Feb 6, 2012 11:17 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

thank you

plus we don’t know where these Bulls front runners are coming from. They could just easily have hopped on a train to Newark from Manhattan. The huge metro area combined with our bad team invites fair weather fans of popular teams to outnumber us in our own arena.

by sheepareevil on Feb 6, 2012 10:02 PM EST up reply actions

I understand,

but like I said, there are probably a lot of people who would take it personally. In the 2nd half game thread, there were similar comments that were more clear criticisms of the actual fans in the arena.

by NetsDaily on Feb 6, 2012 10:06 PM EST up reply actions

me too

but I think it’s unfair to heap all the blame of bandwagon fans on the state of NJ. the Nets play in the 6th borough, in the most densely populated area in the country, so it’s no surprise that one of the NBA’s staple franchises would encourage these fairweather Dallas Cowboys-type fans to show up in drones.

by sheepareevil on Feb 6, 2012 10:09 PM EST up reply actions

NJ does not support their teams

the Devils are one of the premier franchises in the NHL and they still struggle to put people in the seats.

Look, I love NJ and I’ve lived here my entire life and plan to live here for the rest of my life but we don’t have great fans. It is what it is.

hopefully brooklyn is different

ITS A VVVVVVVVVVVVVVCCCCCCCCCCCCCC THREEEEEEEEEE

by Keysta101 on Feb 6, 2012 10:12 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with you

but what I’m saying is it’s not entirely the state’s fault. The Nets play a stone’s throw from Manhattan, so any fair-weather Bulls fan in the entire two-state area will come out to see “their team” play. actual New Jerseyans like you me aren’t to blame, we do what we can to support team when it deserves it (and honestly, the support has been far better this year than I expected, still better than Philly until the last week), but who’s gonna come out to see their team get clobbered by 30? Nets fans stay away, Bulls “fans” circle this game on their calenders.

I don’t really know what I’m saying; I agree that NJ is a bad state to have a franchise in, because of NY’s shadow, because of lack of state pride; but I don’t think you should blame actual New Jersey fans for this. There could be more of them, and their support could eb better, but there are plenty of teams with even poorer support. We have enough fans to fill an arena on a good night (look at the home opener), but there problem is we have even more fans to fill up on an arena for a bandwagon-popular team.

by sheepareevil on Feb 6, 2012 10:19 PM EST up reply actions

and yes I’m too good to proof-read.

by sheepareevil on Feb 6, 2012 10:20 PM EST up reply actions

Struggle?

Please, don’t bring up the Devils.

The Devils averaged pretty horrible attendance at the Swamp, no arguing there. But since they have moved to the Rock, they have been averaging 15,000 in a 17,000 seat arena. The Devils are connected to this state, and want to be here, and as such NJ will continue to support them. The Devils have issues with attendance, because Philadelphia owns SJ, the Rangers own NYC and have factions of fans throughout the state, and the Islanders still have remains left over from their glory days.

The Devils moved into an oversaturated market 30 years ago, and have had success. Only now are succeeding generations of Devils fans beginning to form, a fanbase does not grow overnight, even with that much success.

The reason the Devils have been more successful with their fanbase, irregardless of their on ice success, is that you won’t find as many bandwagon hockey fans as you will basketball. You root for a team, not a group of individuals put together, or a superstar and a collection of misfits.

The team matters.

I typed your symptoms into this thing up here and it says you could have network connectivity problems.

by TKFJ on Feb 6, 2012 10:22 PM EST up reply actions

The Devils have poor attendance

you can’t argue this. 14-15,000/game is what they average year in and year out and that is not something to brag about.

With THREE titles in the last 20 years and 15 straight playoff appearances, attendance should be better.

I’m a Devils fan too btw.

by NetsKiNG on Feb 6, 2012 10:35 PM EST up reply actions

I tried to explain why they have subpar attendance..

They are at 15,000+ this season.

I honestly could care less about attendance though. As long as the people who are at the game support the home team, I am happy.

I typed your symptoms into this thing up here and it says you could have network connectivity problems.

by TKFJ on Feb 6, 2012 10:38 PM EST up reply actions

Your explanation makes sense

but attendance should STILL be better than it is with the success the Devils have had.

15,000 in an arena that seats 17k+ is the same as 15k in an arena that seats 20k.

Devils do have good fans though..lots of diehards.

by NetsKiNG on Feb 6, 2012 10:55 PM EST up reply actions

I think it's just hockey not being as popular here

Not to mention the saturated market. When you take that into consideration, I think 15,000 is pretty impressive, given how little you’ll hear of the Devils or NHL on SportsCenter.

by sheepareevil on Feb 6, 2012 10:58 PM EST up reply actions

The Rangers would argue differently. It’s where the arena is.

by JimmyLips on Feb 6, 2012 11:00 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with TKFJ. I have been to Devils games and the place is usually packed with DEVILS fans!

The Nets were starting to build a die hard fanbase until the RAT ripped apart a winning team! Since, the announcement to Brooklyn, less and less New Jersians can find the time to root for a basketball team leaving the state, that oh by the way have been AWFUL for three staright years now. So, considering everything, we still have a decent attendance going to the games.

LETS GO NETS!

What's worse is that people are gloming onto him because of his identity

and the flip side of praising someone for his/her identity is to decry him/her for the same reason. I always feel cautious when I see people go down that road. It’s ok to have ethnic pride of course, but keep it within reason and healthy expression. Even if the ones who praise don’t go down that flipside road themselves, it invites others to counter that praise along the same lines, because the entire focus of the conversation is on ethnic/racial identity, with pro remarks naturally inviting con.

2011-2012 season prediction: 22-44

And I'm fine with that. One of the original leaders of the "Dwight Howard, not Nono Hilario" movement.

but I think people like him for his overall unusual background for an NBA player. First Asian-American, first Ivy League player since Bill Bradley, undrafted. I don’t like him only being lauded for his ethnic identity, but I do think his game spoke for itself the last two games and I think that’s the main reason people are excited (that and the desperate PG situation in NY).

I was at the game tonight, 3 rows behind Chicago bench and there really may have been a ratio of 4:1 fans rooting for the Bulls.

It was really a horrible game starting from when the ball was tipped to start the game. I know this team has a bunch of injuries, but it is still painful to watch a team that plays with no effort in the first quarter and the rest of the game is meaningless.

The one positive today was that i was able to witness an experience that i have not witnessed at a net game in a long time (sadly enough). I dont think i ever saw witnessed a crowd chanting in unison for a certain player. The whole crowd, whether a net fan or Chicago fan was chanting for Scalebrine. The crowd erupted like they had won the Championship when he hit that shot. I could not stop laughing.

no offense but

earlier today you guaranteed Lin wouldn’t have more than 10 points, and now you’re proclaiming him to be a star – kinda shows how reactionary you can be. it is also makes it hard to take your recent doom and gloom opinions about the Nets seriously (especially after the least surprising loss of the season),

I feel like the emergence of lin is bad for the nets. With the move to the NY, most Asian fans will become loyal to the Knicks.

That’s a big plus for the knicks. There are a lot of Asian bball fans around the world and especially NYC. If the knicks keep lin, that could be bad for the nets. I think if he leaves it helps the Nets or if the nets get an asian player as well. I don’t hate Jeremey LIn. I think he’s playing well. I’m just saying this from an Asian’s perspective.

Bottomline tonight, we got crushed by probably the a top two team in the league who plays extraordinary defense.

We had nine active players and only two of those players can create their own shot in Deron and Farmar. We were missing our leading scorers in Brook, Marshon and Morrow, not to mention, Stevenson and Okur. We really don’t know what we have as a team because our team has not all played together yet! I just hope Brook and Marshon come back soon so we can try to make a run!

LETS GO NETS!

there are two, maybe three championship contender quality starters on the Nets

D-Will, Lopez and if he is as good as he has looked Brooks. Morrow is an ideal sixth man. Hump is a third big man. He cannot dribble. The rest suck.

If the Nets dont get Howard, the Nets will be years behind the Knicks.

No Way

Hump isnt a third big man, He has a jump shot, and is improving on offense. Who do the Knicks have outside of Melo, Amare and Chandler? Im not banking on Lin after two games

glad you understand

he has no offensive skill set outside of tip-ins and sometimes hitting that outside jumper

just look at this season and how bad he looks when he has to become a 3rd or 2nd scoring option. going like 10-22 and such. no post moves, no back down ability, minimal passing ability

he is the prototypical energy big off the bench. the only teams that could contend for a title with him starting are the Lakers, Bulls, Heat, Spurs and Thunder

Yup

No Dwight probably = no Dwill which = expansion franchise.

Usually, like Seattle going to OKC or Vancouver going to Memphis that doesn’t matter. The new market is just glad to have any NBA franchise so they’ll support them no matter how bad they are. The prob in our case is that Brooklyn already knows about the Nets. They already know about our history. So unless the team goes there ready to win, it’ll be that much harder to get the locals to abandon the Knicks. Not that it hasn’t happened before. Doc made Long Islanders forget about the Knicks during his brief stay here. For a brief while Sugar and Buck made NJ forget about the pre-Ewing Knicks.

But King is gonna hafta pull something out of his hat to make Brooklynites switch.

Again tho, on 4 separate occasions this franchise has gone from absolute garbage to the playoffs. At times even championship calibre. Each time it happened almost overnight. In fact, the last time (w/the Kidd and RJ moves) it did literally happen over night.

1) Mid ’70s drafting of Super John and Larry Kenon, plus the signing of Doc.
2) Early ’80s drafting of Albert King, Buck, G-Man, plus the trade for Sugar.
3) Early ’90s drafting of Kenny and DC plus the trade for Petro.
4) Early ’00s drafting of K-Mart, draft/trade of RJ, plus the trade for Kidd.

So maybe it’ll happen again w/Dwight. Then we just gotta worry about keeping all those parts together, which has always been the hardest thing for this franchise to ever do.

The Nets did wear those jerseys in Jersey.

Minus the ’83 and ’84 seasons they wore them from 1978-1990. And they wore them with the word “NETS” above the numbers. No one seemed to mind.

by J-Sal on Feb 6, 2012 11:39 PM EST up reply actions

Not originally

They did have “New Jersey” written vertically down the red stripe but that was after they brought back the stars and stripes uniforms.

Originally the road uniforms only said “Nets” on it when they moved to New Jersey.

(BTW: Larry Brown who’d often get pounded by the Nets while in the ABA was the one who originally tried getting rid of the stars and strips uniform. They were brought back after he took off to Kansas.)

He had 0 in the first half...

…but looked physically drained in the second half when he made all of those TOs, which is no surprised because he played 45 minutes of a game for the first time in his life.

He's a bit different though. Lin isn't the lights out shooter

that nash or even a competent shooter like felton. He’s horrible at shooting. Lin is getting his buckets from finishing drives. He’s a good finisher. I hate to root against him because he’s doing wonders for Asian kids who love basketball. It’s great to see him do well. I just wish it was for another team….L

Exactly.

Knicks fans are letting get it to their heads lets see him against those two teams, Boston, OKC, and Clips. If anything he’ll be another Rondo or that guy, what’s his name? Norris Cole.

by baronkadonk on Feb 6, 2012 11:48 PM EST up reply actions

Good for him

It won’t matter if he doesn’t keep it up though.
If anything he’s exposed the knicks and how poorly built theyt are. He won today without melo and Amare mostly because they went back to moving the ball. Once other teams say “ok lets stop this guy seriously”, the knicks will just go back to melo trying to run the point.

He got fatigued in the 2nd half, and with Melo/Amar’e out, the defense was focusing on Lin a lot, and forced some turnovers.

This was the first Nets game I just had to turn off this year

It was just too hard to watch. Aside from the poor play and blow out, the icing on the cake was the road game atmosphere in our own arena. It’s going to be hard to get excited for Nets games until the Brooks Brothers return

by SovietBrooklyn on Feb 7, 2012 1:09 AM EST reply actions

nothing makes me angrier as a Nets fan than getting vastly outnumbered in our own arena

I can accept losing by 30 to (arguably) the best team in the NBA, but when the opposing leaves to a standing ovation at the Rock that just riles me up.

by sheepareevil on Feb 7, 2012 1:15 AM EST up reply actions

really I don't know how can we can expect the guys to play with energy in that atmosphere

It really has to be demoralizing as a player if your home court feels like an away game.

by sipitioking on Feb 7, 2012 1:19 AM EST up reply actions

it's not entirely our fan's fault

I hope they don’t take it as them not having any fanbase, cause that’s certainly not true; we packed the house for the home opener, and even less marque games like Raptors-Nets have had decent enough turnouts.. it’s just that with a depleted roster going against the best team in the East, not many Nets fans are gonna come up to witness a slaughter. but there are unfortunately PLENTY of frontrunning Bulls fans in the NY-metro area that will.

i’m sure ticket prices were a little higher than normal as well, with all the Bulls “fans” circling this game on their calender. it’s the same way in Philly; average ticket prices on stubhub are still around $10 starting price, but the Clippers game on Friday has a spike up to $50. but as many have said here, they’d avoid going to this game because they don’’ want to witness a beatdown; add that to the increased ticket prices, and it’ll be mostly fairweather Bulls fans in attendance who wouldn’t pay an arm and leg to see their team in MSG, but will gladly take the train to Newark to fill the arena.

by sheepareevil on Feb 7, 2012 1:27 AM EST up reply actions

I do not black DWILL

I have been hearing fans cheer for other teams for 25 years. It is so insane that I am just looking forward to move to Brooklyn so maybe this does not happen as much.

by netter on Feb 7, 2012 10:06 AM EST reply actions

Of ALL the games I could’ve gone to, I HAD TO PICK THIS ONE! Even with the Groupon, I felt like I was getting robbed. Once it was known Morrow was out, I knew we were done. I just would’ve liked to seen a lot more competitive game.

As far as being ‘outnumbered’ in our own arena, that’s going to continue until we become an elite team again. It’ll either be near empty with only the die-hards there or full of the other team’s fans.
