Do You Think Dwight Knows?

That he has the power to help us become a potential dynasty overnight if he makes it to free agency?

As much as I want Dwight on the Nets this season, there really isn't much point from a Nets perspective. Yes, it secures his spot on the team, but a NY Knicks-type cost. For this season, we may be too far out of the playoffs by the time he is traded here as we would be challenged by a lack of time, chemistry and depth. For future seasons we may be crippled by a lack of assets and cap flexibility to improve enough to be a true contender.

However, if Dwight and his agent simply inform the Nets not to make an offer for him (because he is going to opt out regardless of what team he is on at the end of the season), then we have the ability to start the Brooklyn era with a dynasty. Orlando still would have the ability to trade Dwight wherever they want/can (as they could now), but any team would have to look at the trade as a rental of Dwight, or at the very least a non-committal Dwight.

We all know what the line-up could look like if we aren't forced to trade for Dwight and signs with us outright:

Deron W. / MIA #2

Brooks / Morrow

2012 #1 / Shawne W.

Lopez / Jordan W.

Howard / Petro

With a mini-MLE and potentially Bogdanovic, the Houston #1 and resigned vets like Gaines, Bogans and Shelden Williams added to the mix.

We would be an instant contender and one of the top 4 teams in the league along with OKC, Miami and Chicago.

Dwight, surely must know this, right?

i think we can make the playoffs if we get dwight

i believe we are only 3 games back and getting dwight would make us a good team, which the 8th seed in the east usually is not. so if we trade for dwight i think we can do well enough to either make the playoffs or at least get a late lottery pick so the 1st round pick we trade (hoping we can maybe keep one) wont turn into a blue chip guy

I guess we'll have to see what happens at the deadline

if Dwight seriously is only willing to sign with the Nets, and not with the Lakers, the Nets could probably get away with waiting. If there really is no other team he wants to sign an extension with, no team is going to sacrifice assets to get Dwight.

We'll Be Fine.

Here in Europe its said that AK47 is ready to sign with te Nets whatever they want...

he can come cheap and fill that Mini-MLE…
But we can have some more space if BK can get rid od Petro, Shawne and Farmar and if Dwight and Deron take a little paycut, like 1 or 2M in the 1st year. I’m sure they will not mind, they will have tons of endorsements in Brooklyn, and if that paycut means adding a good player from free agency they will do it.
After the deadline we are going to see how all of this plays out, and if Dwight stays in Orlando the Nets will work to get rid of those contracts.

where the link saying that AK-47 would sign with us whenever they want?

by avilanets85 on Feb 6, 2012 3:52 PM EST up reply actions

I have no links and its no garbage, that's what I heard on TV Sports here, and some newspapers...

but there may be somewhere some links telling that…

Its said Prokhorov convinced him to sign with the Nets in this offseason, but then with Dwightmare and the change of strategy from Nets FO to sign just one year contracts, they abortted the signing of AK for next summer, because AK liked what he heard from Prokhorov and was liking living some months in his country.

I know that, I'm in the right thread right?

We are talking about if dWIGHT becomes free agent, that’s only for next season.

The deadline for opting out of his CSKA contract for this year has long passed.

by whoopacha on Feb 7, 2012 5:45 AM EST up reply actions

We'll make the playoffs if Dwight comes before the deadline

D-Will
Morrow
Hedo
Hump
Dwight

I think this team is solid and could make the playoffs in the East. Sure the signing way is the best but things can change. It’s a risky play to wait.

But as the OP said I want to sign him in FA, the potential dynasty is looming.

by Rockice_8 on Feb 6, 2012 3:11 PM EST reply actions

dwight may know this,

but he also knows that if he gets traded here he can make $30 million extra dollars

by mbspam17 on Feb 6, 2012 4:14 PM EST reply actions

The difference over 4 years is much less

And the majority of the $30m can be made up in year 5 with a new contract. If Dwight want Brooklyn and wants to win a title (which means more money in endorsements) then he should sign as a FA.

by Jack Handy Jr on Feb 6, 2012 6:38 PM EST up reply actions

Actual 5 year difference

Assuming he signs another max contract at the end of his contract:

$5.7mil if he signs a 4 year deal & then resigns.
$4.5mil if he signs a 3 year deal (or 4 year w/ opt out) & then resigns.

by TheNetsFan on Feb 6, 2012 7:25 PM EST up reply actions

the guaranteed fifth year means a lot

a lot can go wrong over a four year deal, why do you think athletes look for longer contracts in every sport? Plus, 5 mill over the four years is no chump change.

by mbspam17 on Feb 9, 2012 7:05 PM EST up reply actions

It would be awsome of course, but it's impossible...

We have no money to offer him, and he’s RFA and the Nuggets can match any offer.

2012 Lineup: D-Will - Brooks - AK47 - Lopez - D12... Book it!

by Heavinsent on Feb 6, 2012 5:57 PM EST up reply actions

We'd only have the MLE to offer

He’ll probably get a bigger offer elsewhere, and even if he signed our MLE offer, Denver could, as of now, match. I do expect Chandler to sign at least a minimum salaried rest of season deal after the Chinese season ends so that he could become an unrestricted FA in he offseason. Denver would likely match such an offer, but if they don’t agree to a long term extension this season, I would expect Chandler to force Denver’s hand by signing a rest of season offer with another team.

Would it be at all possible to keep MarShon, Hump, and Morrow in any Dwight trade

no

It's really funny, we're burried right now and yet truly still not out of it depending on what a Dwight trade would look like.

There are 16 games until the trade deadline and then 23 after.

If we could somehow muster 6 and 10 by the deadline we have 14 wins.

We got Dwight and maybe J Rich comes in the trade, say we go on an adrenaline and pride filled heater for the last 23 and go 17 and 6?

31 wins might be enough for the 8 seed.

Of course I prefer waiting til FA, but as Jack alludes to, this is all on Dwight and basically no one else.

If he’ll agree to wait it out, that’s what will happen.

If he wants a trade at the deadline and DeVos gives up the ghost, that is what will happen.

As an FYI, DeVos was interviewed again I believe yesterday and still thinks he has a legitimate shot at keeping Dwight and isn’t sold on trading him.
We’ll see if his tune changes by March 15th, but here’s looking at that. Cheers!

it really doesn’t matter that much who else is on the roster if you have a core of dwight howard and deron williams. just add a bunch of 3pt shooters and some willing defenders, let them gel and build up some team chemistry and you have an instant contender. that being said, it would be nice to keep brooks, morrow and farmar on a nets team with dwight and deron because you’d have a nice backcourt that has been playing together for some time and would only have to take care of the 3&4 spot.

by Z_Z_Z on Feb 7, 2012 2:35 AM EST reply actions

do not compare it to the knicks

Howard+Williams+role players>>>Chandler+Anthony+Amare

The NY has two stars plus one very good player but their chemistry is off, and the most important position in the NBA nowadays is their weakest point.

Howard and Williams are two superstars that covered the two most important position in the NBA. And Howard and Williams are both top 10, but Melo and Amare are only top 20.

So if the nets give up all their assets to the Magic for Howard, they will not become the Knicks. That’s why they can trade anyone besides D-Will.

by letsgolal on Feb 7, 2012 11:16 AM EST reply actions

FYI

It’s impossible to sign Howard & Lopez without dumping at least one of Morrow/ShaWill/Petro. For true max offers to Howard & Deron, we’d probably have to shed two of them.

by TheNetsFan on Feb 8, 2012 9:45 AM EST reply actions

Not true

We can keep Lopez but we would have to sign Deron and Dwight to the max FIRST. In order to do that because of Lopez’s cap hold as a RFA we would have to trade Petro which shouldn’t be difficult since he will be an expiring next season. Trade him with cash consideration for a 2nd rounder. Farmar is expected to opt out of his last year which i believe gives us just enough cap space to sign Deron and Dwight.

Then you resign Lopez. Since we have his rights we are allowed to go over the cap to resign him.

I think the same is true for Hump since we hold his rights as well. I could be wrong with Hump though since he’s on a 1 year deal.

by breaking20 on Feb 9, 2012 9:22 PM EST up reply actions

BUT

For all we know the Nets front office may ask Lopez to take a pay cut if he wants to stay. If he says no they could sign and trade him to someone for that missing piece…. a SF!

There are a million options… none of us can guess exactly what would transpire if Dwight wants to come here as a FA.

by breaking20 on Feb 9, 2012 9:24 PM EST up reply actions

Depending on where our pick lands and if the Rockets pick is conveyed we have to do more then just trade Petro.

And Petro may take a first rounder like the Rockets pick to dump in the offseason and if we combine him and Farmar or Shawne at the deadline for an expiring it definitely will.

If I’m not mistaken Dwight’s true max will start at about $19 million BTW, which unless I’m wrong basically everyone is ignoring.

by vincecarter4pres on Feb 9, 2012 9:58 PM EST up reply actions

Dwight is aware

I’m sure his, “representatives,” have laid everything out for him of every legit suitor.

I’m not too concerned about not having any assets if we do land Dwight. The good teams always manage to bring in talent and beat the cap. Look at the Celtics and Lakers and how well they have been able to do it.

When you have a good team players want to sign with you. That’s an obvious fact.

Also when you have a good team you can play the waiting game and make those, “trade steals,” such as the Gasol trade to LA. Good teams work the cap by acquiring talent and going over the cap. You never see them signing big time free agents because the CBA doesn’t allow it.

We also have a draft wiz in Billy King. One of our biggest assets is his drafting ability. This man knows how to draft talent in the later picks/second round. This is a valuable tool when you are a good team.

The Key is becoming a good team lol. Hopefully we break the, “Curse,” and land Dwight.

by breaking20 on Feb 9, 2012 9:17 PM EST reply actions

I say trade for him!!

It’s too risky with free agency if you ask me…We all know a last minute team can pop up and take D12 in a heartbeat. We’ll be sitting here saying “He said he wanted to be a NET!!” Well agents are scumbags, who will shop their client for the best deal. While we’re waiting for Dwight, Dwill will get word and they’ll both be out! A sign and trade would be the only way I’d be comfortable. Not to mention Lopez and Dwight can’t exist on the same front line, you know that!
