Lopez Returns, But Nets Come Up Empty Against Bucks

Brook Lopez returned to action on Sunday, but he couldn't help the Nets' offense, which shot just 34 percent in a 92-85 loss the Bucks at the Prudential Center.

The Nets recovered from an ugly start to take a brief lead midway through the second quarter, but the Bucks took control with a 7-0 run and opened things up with a 15-4 start to the second half. The Nets cut the lead down to seven midway through the fourth and down to five with a minute left, but each time, their run was stopped with a Milwaukee three.

In addition to their offensive woes, the Nets couldn't stop Ersan Ilyasova, who scored 29 points and grabbed 25 rebounds. Both were career highs and the 25 boards equaled the NBA one-game high for the season.

Deron Williams led the Nets with 26 points and six assists. Anthony Morrow added 17 points off the bench, but the Nets' other five reserves shot 1-for-14. MarShon Brooks (3-for-14) also struggled. Lopez had nine points, two rebounds, two assists and one block in 22 minutes. He shot just 2-for-7 from the field and 5-for-11 from the line.

This game was a total disaster

NO EFFORT. NONE.

Ersan Ilyasova goes for 30 and 25???? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

Nobody boxed out ANYONE all game long. By far the most pathetic defensive rebounding performance I have ever seen in my life.

AND SCREW AVERY JOHNSON for INSISTING on playing that clown Petro. He puts him in for 1:46 and Petro kills our momentum and we end up blowing our lead.

I can’t defend Avery from the “fire” crowd. I really can’t.

How is this Avery’s fault? We dont have the players.

how often is it actually the coach's fault?

it doesn’t matter, we need to change the culture around here. someone who won’t answer questions with “we battled” and “we’re shorthanded”. someone who will actually get the team to play D!

nothing can ever be Avery's fault

No offensive plays? The players should figure it out.
Insane defensive schemes? It’s the players’ fault for not coming up with something better.
Petro, Graham, etc. getting too much playing time? The players make Avery do it.

Must have been Avery that missed all those FT’s too. Or that flagrant foul too. All those wide open misses. Avery should just zoom into the guys heads like the Matrix or something, because telling them is obviously not working. Yeah, our players are GREAT and its the coaches fault.

Its not like we have a team that we spent a lot of money on and put together carefully. Avery is plugging in D-Leagers with ZERO practice time, no continuity regarding who is starting, who comes off the bench, and we have a lot of guys making bonehead errors, like our best player dribbling the ball off his foot or out of bounds.

Yeah sure Avery has some responsibility in this, but the fact of the matter is, we dont have a good team if everyone is healthy and we have practice time, so what does everyone expect from him or the team? Everyone makes it sound like we change out coaches and all of a sudden we are going to change, and that’s just a very short sighted way of looking at things.

We lead the league in different lineups and missed games, when he says he and they are doing the best they can, I believe him.

Absolutely sickening performance

I have a hard time comprehending what the hell happened between yesterday and today. To shoot like that and to get out rebounded like that is flat out embarrassing. Brook looked as rusty as I thought he would but I was disappointed in his rebounding. (Sounds familiar.) They are going to get absolutely obliterated tomorrow. If somehow they can come out and win 2 of 3 on this back to back to back, I’d be shocked.

they aren't going to make him the center of the offense his first game back. It isn't easy.

He has to get used to playing at full pace, and logging in more minutes. There’s no need to make him the Brook he was last year already. It’ll take time.

by bbfan5117 on Feb 19, 2012 9:54 PM EST up reply actions

no

I know basket ball
Avery is not a great coach. he good but not great. his offense is based on jump shots.
Deron dogs it sometimes. there is a huge difference between JKidd and DWill. JKidd knows when to go get a bucket and when to set up teammates. He should have been setting up AMMO

by DJ HeavyDuty on Feb 19, 2012 9:48 PM EST up reply actions

Do you understand why the offense is on jump shots and why we don't have inside scoring every game?

Do you see a difference between the teams Kidd played on and the team Deron is playing with? D-Will is doing his best. He constantly gives us 20+ points and hits 7+ assists a night. There is hardly a supporting cast. The bench is absolutely horrendous besides Farmar and Morrow. MarShon is still learning as a rookie, and Morrow doesn’t play consistently.

Games like this make me sick

If we lose cause we got beat , then I’m fine with that but I didn’t see the nets buckle down a do a thing.

What is our offense give the ball to Deron and try to let him score? Deron looked good today but if he stop trying to find his own shot on every possession , he would have has more gas at the end. The guys stand around too much and Brooks didn’t even look for the ball when Deron went out.

Lopez just has to defended the basket and rebound.

Avery is becoming very disappointing, I thought he was a better teacher than this.

I want to trade absolutely anybody apart from Williams for Howard because they aren’t good at basketball and are losers, a complete bunch of losers.

Why keep our picks?
because they havent been infected by the New Jersey Nets loser bug and might be decent at basketball

Seriously trade the farm for Howard, i dont give a damn right now.

On top of that how about we get rid of Avery. The man hasnt a clue, so lets see what he did tonight…

Failed to take Petro out of the game
Ran more stupid plays like iso’s for Humph
Failed to remind our bigs that by boxing it, it prevents the opposition getting a rebound
Failed to reinforce said issue from above at halftime
Team talk at half time was obviously about how good Lopez looks now he’s gained 10lbs
Failed to chew out the bigs for not boxing out
Failed to do anything because the mans an idiot who hasnt a clue what he is doing.

I seriously dislike Avery Johnson and if it wasnt for Williams seeming to like him and therefore wouldnt want to rock the whole “bigger picture”… I would swim the Atlantic, run to Newark, slap Avery Johnson with a massive fish then offer him queensberry rules outside.

I want a fresh start in Brookyln without any of the losing mentality we currently have.

Hopefully it’ll be Deron Williams, Dwight Howard and a new coach in the summer.

PS I hate Johan Petro

Our full squad stinks. Hell, people talk about Dwight on the Nets and all we give up are Brooks Brook and role players and apparently we arent even contenders. So somehow people expect wins when we dont have Dwight, OR Brook(until this game obviously but does that even count, no)

WE STINK. We have one good player, and a whole bunch of players who are 2nd and even 3rd stringers STARTING for us. That is the cause of this.

He could have just stayed in PHO. It has nothing to do with his knees. They wanted to retain him to keep Nash and he together.

So thats MY point. That winning doesnt matter anymore. I mean by that logic we dont even need PLAYER to attract other players! Someone like a coach would even do. We dont need to win.

Brooklyn will help. Dwill can still help. Help can come from many places… places that may not have even revealed themselves! (draft selection maybe?)

My point. was that I am still good. Just losing does not ruin my hope for this franchise. Its so much more then winning. Now… if this extends into next season, THEN its over. BUT NOT YET!

They know EXACTLY what they are doing. Deron even came out and said it. He knows that they are staying put to secure D12.

Agree or Disagree with that, but dont call it “mismanagement.”

If the nets could boxout a walker tonight? lol

by Dolo_ on Feb 19, 2012 11:57 PM EST up reply actions

by JohnFromLongIsland on Feb 20, 2012 12:09 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Maybe if brook played

We’d have a shot. But alas, he isn’t sober don’t have a chance in hell of winning tomorrow.

by alleyhoop_20 on Feb 20, 2012 12:02 AM EST reply actions

meh

I think most people complaining about the Lin coverage aren’t claiming they should be talking about us instead. or at least I’m not. because they shouldn’t be. we’re a bad team.

I do really hate the Knicks, but when I complain about Lin hype, I feel like I do it out of respect for the kid and his game. I think 2 weeks is long enough to not still be treated as a side show, which it still feels like to me. Maybe I’m just perceiving this wrong, but it still feels like everyone’s treating him more as an exciting novelty than someone we can actually have a legitimate, objective discussion about. Where he does he rank amongst young point guards? Will he be better than John Wall or Kyrie Irving?

I would say no, but I at least wouldn’t the media trying to make those kind of comparisons. Instead it’s “let’s compare him to Magic freakin Johnson so that our coverage of him can’t be taken seriously”. I mean really, after 16 or so days of “Linsanity”, aren’t you a little sick of the wordplay too?

by sheepareevil on Feb 20, 2012 12:24 AM EST up reply actions

Of course I'm sick of it

but I also understand it and accept it. It’s a HUGE story and will continue to be the talk of the NBA.

Kid is putting up historic #’s.

by NetsKiNG on Feb 20, 2012 12:27 AM EST up reply actions

yea

I still think the numbers are a little inflated. But I’m not gonna argue against him there. He deserves the accolades. And I understand the hype. It’s the perfect storm that ESPN/NBA couldn’t have conceived of in their wildest dreams.

And I guess that’s why they can’t help but get carried away. I just hope, if he starts to struggle (not that I’m hoping for it, other than to see the Knicks lose), that he won’t receive backlash even close to the amount of hype he’s received. cause that would be unfair.

but they’ll probably blame Carmelo anyway if that happens. Which I’m okay with.

Its all about “glensanity”

Err...

I have to decide on sports article topics for spring high school newspaper issue. I’m sick of the Lin hype, but I know people will actually be interested in reading it if we have an article on him.

I’m going to bed y’all.

My hope will remain at an all time high until we start next season with no one. Until then… NETS! Try not to get down!

by MrDollarBills on Feb 20, 2012 12:18 AM EST up reply actions

I ask one thing of Avery Johnson tomorrow

don’t play Petro.

That’s it.

If we lose, we lose…but for the love of god STOP playing this clown. I honestly don’t know what he has to do to glue himself to the bench. He’s dreadful game in and game out.

by NetsKiNG on Feb 20, 2012 12:22 AM EST reply actions

he's gonna play tomorrow

because Brook isn’t there to take away minutes.

it was a good sign Jordan took all of Petro’s minutes in the 2nd half, but still, I doubt we’ll be Petro-free tomorrow.

by sheepareevil on Feb 20, 2012 12:26 AM EST up reply actions

I'm not saying I disagree with you

it’s just that Avery Johnson’s rotations on this team, they’re not governed by reason.

by sheepareevil on Feb 20, 2012 12:35 AM EST up reply actions

The problem with this Nets team goes way beyond just a lack of talent

Even players that aren’t that talent should know the basics of basketball like boxing out and communicating on defense. Doesn’t matter if we get Lopez back full strength, this team is lazy, it has a low basketball IQ, and we will continue to lose games.

We don’t really need to try and tank, never have before and don’t have to now

by muwu on Feb 20, 2012 12:29 AM EST reply actions

i just think these guys just suck and have bad basketball IQ

by avilanets85 on Feb 20, 2012 12:31 AM EST up reply actions

the problem is players doing more than what they are capable of doing.

Kidd always told his teammates that if he passed them the ball, he wants them to shoot it. Likewise, if deron passes the ball, the recieving player should shoot it. Its painful to watch Morrow pass the ball to another player, considering he’s the best shooter on the team. This falls on coaching.

by Mushman on Feb 20, 2012 12:43 AM EST up reply actions

i would trade everyone right now for Kidd and a time machine lol

by avilanets85 on Feb 20, 2012 12:45 AM EST up reply actions

I would put Avery behind the scorer’s table and Fratello on the bench.

Fire Johnson and hire Van Gundy - I'm telling you Thorn was smoking something when he let Van Gundy slip away in the night.

by diehardNFFLbarnone on Feb 22, 2012 7:13 PM EST up reply actions

One thing I've noticed with this team

Is that they’re horrible at communicating with each other, especially on defense.

by ProfessaPackMan on Feb 20, 2012 12:32 AM EST reply actions

Not a lot of smart players on the team

We have a lot of mindless energy guys, the guys other teams normally have come off the bench and just let them run rampant. Problem with us is, those guys are our starters. Hump, Gaines, Farmar, Morrow too, all fit that description

by muwu on Feb 20, 2012 12:36 AM EST up reply actions

Heh.

Went to the Knicks game today: Jeremy Lin is not a fluke. He’s not this good, but he’s certainly not just a flash in the pan. I hope the Nets are able to recreate the energy of The Garden in Barclays because it’s frickin’ amazing. It felt like a playoff game.

I didn’t catch the Nets game — did Lopez look okay?

by Dopeness on Feb 20, 2012 12:35 AM EST reply actions

you went to the Knicks game? that’s blasphemy man lol

by avilanets85 on Feb 20, 2012 12:37 AM EST up reply actions

he was rusty as was to be expected

got to the line a lot, missed a lot of FTs… tired, but mostly made the right decisions, a couple good passes out of the high post. decent defense but got killed on the boards… it’s Brook, should get better after the all-star break I imagine

by sheepareevil on Feb 20, 2012 12:39 AM EST up reply actions

Just finished watching the post game interviews

What is with this team after we lose. They seem to never be negative about anything and even dwill was positive after tonights loss.

S Jax wants to play wi thDwight and Deron

It sounds more and more like he’s part of the “plan”. Also he recently said he thought Dwight was staying.. Maybe thats the head fake?

Avery is overrated

Besides that this team cannot stop anyone. Or can’t develop a game plan to stop anyone. And beside that Dr. Avery has these weird prescriptions: he plays every other day! He plays 14 minutes. The biggest issue to me is that Avery does not know how to use Brooks. He is wasting his talent putting him out there as a traditional two. You would think that Brook is a spot up shooter watching their game plan. Let the kid go crazy. He breaks defenses apart and opens up easy opportunities for his team mates. I cannot understand why there are not more iso’s for Brooks. He is deadline one on one. Why can’t Avery use his skills. And, memo to someone: Lopez needs to get the ball on the blocks not 15 feet away!

One day they reel me back in and give me hope, the next they cut the line and send me sprawling back into the sea of despair. At least I didn’t buy tickets and drive in to see this garbage game Iike the last time I had hope.
