Deadlines and Commitments - LI

Special All-Star Edition. The Nets will send three All-Stars to Orlando (and the Armor will send four more, including two who participated in the Nets training camp). Deron Williams, Marshon Brooks and Anthony Morrow will all be there. Did we mention the game is in Orlando? Yes. Did we mention Dwight Howard might be giving interviews. No, we didn't but he will. Should be interesting.

You'll note that we are no longer reporting the team's new colors and logo will be unveiled in February. That's because the team is now saying it will be happening in "spring" and although it feels like like spring, it's still February.

Star-divide

February 22 - First day Mehmet Okur can be traded in multi-player deal. He can traded one-for-one at any time. Nets vs. Magic in Newark. Nets play Magic last game before the All-Star Break, first game after the trade deadline.

February 24 - Marshon Brooks will play for Team Chuck in the BBVA Rising Stars Challenge. Coverage starts at 9 p.m. He will be coached by Mike Fratello.

February 25 - D-League All-Star Game. Coverage starts at 2 p.m. Assuming none of them are called up by then, three Armor players will be in the lineup for the Eastern Conference All-Stars: JamesOn Curry, Jerry Smith and Jeff Foote. L.D. Williams of the Armor, defending champ, will compete in the D-League Dunk Contest.

February 25 - Anthony Morrow will compete in the Foot Locker Three Point Shootout, Part of All-Star Saturday Night. Coverage starts at 8:00 p.m.

February 26 - Deron Williams plays in NBA All-Star Game in Orlando. Coverage starts at 6 p.m. Pundits doubt the Magic want to see Dwight Howard in another team's uniform during All-Star weekend. However, what's the alternative? Having the All-Star Game dominated by trade talks? Choose your poison, Richard DeVos.

March 1 - First day teams can trade players they signed as free agents in 2011. For the Nets, that's Shelden Williams, Shawne Williams, Kris Humphries and DeShawn Stevenson.

March 4 - Russian Presidential Election. Mikhail Prokhorov vs. Vladimir Putin. Prokhorov unlikely to win (or make the run-off if Putin doesn't get 50 percent of the vote). If he wins, or if Putin appoints him prime minister, which is, surprisingly, more likely, Prokhorov has said he will put his Nets shares in a "blind trust", with independent trustees in charge of major decisions.

March 15 - NBA trade deadline, 6 p.m. ET

March 16 - Nets travel to Orlando.

March 23 - Last day to sign a player and have him be playoff-eligible

March 25 - Should Mikhail Prokhorov finish second to Vladimir Putin (and Putin get less than 50 percent of the vote on March 4), this would be the date of the runoff.

April 23 - Last regular season home game for the Nets in New Jersey, 7:30 at Prudential Center vs. the 76ers

April 26 - Regular season ends with Nets vs Raptors. in Toronto, last game for the New Jersey Nets unless they make the playoffs.

May 23 - Earliest completion date for exterior skin at Barclays Center

June 28 - NBA Draft in Newark. Number of picks currently owned by the Brooklyn Nets (and by this point they will be be the Brooklyn Nets): three, their own and the Rockets' (lottery-protected) first round picks plus the Heat's second round pick, which could very well be the last pick in the draft.

July 1 - Teams can contact free agents. For those thinking tours of the Barclays Center might be in order that week, the arena should be looking a lot like the finished product, with the scoreboard and other LED installation nearly complete and seating almost all in place.

July 11 - Teams can begin signing free agents.

July 27 – August 12 - 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Deron Williams likely to be only Net playing at the Olympics. France did not offer Johan Petro a slot on Les Bleus, its Olympic team. Mehmet Okur hasn't played for Turkey's "12 Giant Men" since the 2007 World Championships.

September 5 - Expected completion date for Barclays Center. Expect a couple of shakeout events in early September. Moved back from August 27.

September 28 - Opening Night, Barclays Center. Jay-Z will open the arena with a series of concerts.

October 2 - First sporting event at Barclays, a preseason NHL game between the Islanders and Devils.

October 17 - Arena construction documents list this date as first preseason game at the arena.

October 31 - Opening Night for the Brooklyn Nets, according to those same documents. Arena officials note that this is simply a target date, not set in stone.

Wow

Imagine Dwight gets traded at the deadline, then plays the Magic in Orlando the next day, doesnt even have to leave the arena, just switch to the road locker room…

my guess is they take the wimpy way out...

Traded on the 15th, physical on the 16th, won’t play till the next game.

by whoopacha on Feb 19, 2012 1:04 AM EST up reply actions

"whimpy"

by whimpy, you mean holding out until the team (nets) that wants him goes all out because we’re more desparate to have him locked down than they are to get returning assets? if so, yeah. they’ll be taking the whimpy way.

by shane gayle on Feb 19, 2012 3:00 AM EST up reply actions

bro if they wait till the last second to trade, the nets won't be desparate

why would the nets be desperate if they will be healthy by then. The only team that can spoil the party is the lakers whose best offer would be bynum, kevin martin, and late picks….IF IF IF…alot of ifs since the magic in my belief wouldn’t be high (at all) on kevin martin whose the complete opposite of CRASH a player that they like.

Of course they can always trade Bynum and Gasol for Dwight and Hedo, and kill this franchise, but there’s also the hole nets or nothing (possibly) for Dwight. There have been some indications of such a scenario.

Brooklyn marketing starts

as last season in NJ ends.

That’s what I was told.

ANd I expect they will reveal colors, logo in April and then uniform in mid-summer.

so this has got me thinking

since this will be the last game in NJ, do we want to form another NetsDaily party somewhere in the arena? i would definitely like to do that and have one last NJ hurrah with everyone here

If any of you like being extremely angry

just go over to Posting and Toasting and look at their utter ridiculousness and shots at our beloved squad.

Man I hate Knicks fans.

My initial anger at that site

Disappears when I see animal pictures under what appear to be legit headlines. Aside from the fact that it’s a Knicks site with Knicks fans, it’s hard to take P&T that seriously. All SB Nation blogs do not provide equal coverage.

let's see their team win a playoff series.

if their heads blew up any bigger they would pop. Most over-hyped team under .500 I’ve ever seen. We are all witnesses, and we still will be when they start struggLIN vs good teams. Can’t wait till Monday.

Nets need a small forward, and a source says they’re looking at Renaldo Balkman

by onegallant on Feb 19, 2012 1:34 AM EST reply actions

Balkman is definitely not a chucker. Where'd you get that idea?

Again, while he doesn’t offer an infinite offensive arsenal the dude is super active on the defensive end and he can handle the rock. Avery will utilize his strengths and I predict he will give us at least what Josh Howard gave Dallas. All he’s ever needed was consistent playing time. Go get ’em Billy

by JUNKMEIN on Feb 19, 2012 7:36 AM EST up reply actions

this.

especially since we dont have a single SF.

ugh

sure, whatever. I don’t care anymore about SFs, at best it’ll be barely passable

by sheepareevil on Feb 19, 2012 2:58 AM EST up reply actions

There is absolutely no reason why people should complain about Balkman joining this team

Who cares if he’s knicks scrap, he’s better than anything we have at SF
In the event that he sucks more than Petro and Shawne (hard to imagine) we wouldn’t be losing anything since that’s the kind of palyers there are on this team,

Think about it…who is better? DJ or Balkman…very similar and IMO Balkman has more experience and is a better DJ than DJ himself.
Nothing to lose really…maybe sad but true

by nets14 on Feb 19, 2012 3:03 AM EST reply actions

OMG stop with the desparate

If they were desparate they would’ve gotten a SF alreary
They may be desparate for Dwight but not for balkman
Balkman would be a good pickup (without complicating things) simply because there’s nothing to lose and he’s an NBA SF.
Just like Okur was a good pickup (he was cheap) even though his back sucks, it is what it is

by sipitioking on Feb 19, 2012 4:38 AM EST up reply actions

Right now anyone can play SF for nets

Marcus Williams will be available when his team exits China's playoffs.

However, his team is playing very well and might win it all. 2-3 weeks more, maybe. Williams is a steal at veteran’s minimum. Can’t go wrong with the missing Williams, as I’ve said.

by barrypopik on Feb 19, 2012 3:37 AM EST reply actions

Because Marcus Williams is much better than Renaldo Balkman.

Again, we’re talking about the Marcus Williams from Arizona, not Connecticut. He’s the CBA’s third leading scorer and was arguably its best player, even better than J. R. Smith and Wilson Chandler.

Yes Balkman stinks

However if he can just get on the court and catch the ball in the post and play defense with energy and tenaciousness I will take him. He have shooters we need finishers and defenders.

Also him and Stevenson isnt that horrible a tandem on the defensive end.I’ll take Balkman over Shawne Williams anyday.

by power_njerz on Feb 19, 2012 3:46 AM EST reply actions

This

This team lives and dies(mostly die ) by the jumper and 3ball. Balkman would balance things out a little and maybe we can see a few more dunk, sure we’re at the bottom there too.

by Zartan on Feb 19, 2012 8:45 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

I wanna try to trade Shawne and Petro for Jackson.

Mil isn’t playing him so they could use Shawne off the bench sparingly too. Petro fills a need fo another big body. Both come off the books after next year – Shawne has player option so he may opt out if he doesn’t want to stay.

by bkfire on Feb 19, 2012 3:49 AM EST reply actions

If Shawne's contract didn't have a year left with a player option

I could see Mil doing it. No way that Williams opts out of that contract

If we trade with Orlando we’re going to need a wing player anyway so that actually isn’t a bad idea though. I’m pretty sure that Mil will try to get an expiring though instead of committing what, 7 mil to two bums?

yea I was mad about that when I saw it at the end of Jan

It sucks that the first sporting event will be a hokey game
It kind of takes away from it beng the Nets home

by sipitioking on Feb 19, 2012 4:44 AM EST up reply actions

nah

no problem. Even if we share Barclay’s with the Islanders it will be the Brooklyn Nets Arena – real name in our minds, not the offical name. (I don’t think much actual banking will happen on the court)

by PigDaddy3 on Feb 19, 2012 1:57 PM EST up reply actions

damn

I was going to say, sign Balkman, it can’t hurt. As long as he plays with energy and gives us some defense I don’t care. It will be better than the garbage that has played SF for us all season

When can i get my Dwight Howard Brooklyn Nets Jersey?

by AmbassadorAmeer on Feb 19, 2012 7:45 AM EST via mobile reply actions

Balkan is an upgrade over Shawne and non existent James. Scrappy player.

He can defend and most importantly run in the fast break. Something none of SFs are able to do due to leg conditions. I say sign him, Sheldon has gotten me sold on hard work. RB can’t hurt here.

by ItsAllNets on Feb 19, 2012 8:19 AM EST reply actions

Yesterday's game further convinced me that it would be so much better (almost necessary) to get Dwight in FA.

A healthy Lopez can get you 20 points easy. Humphries is capable of scoring 20+ with Deron. So is Marshon. Maybe Morrow if he’s on a hot shooting streak. Other than that, it’s role players galore. If we trade the kitchen sink for Dwight, we’ll struggle to score, maybe even more than now with Lopez. Our defense will get better, but that won’t mean much when our offense is so weak.

by RecSpecs on Feb 19, 2012 8:23 AM EST reply actions

I'll love it if that happens

But as some pointed out here, its just too risky to just let him and deron wait till free agency… Who knows what fegan and schwartz have up their sleeves, I don’t trust these agents a single bit and neither do i think our FO are as well.

So as much as it might hurt in the short term to lose brook, swag etc…, i’ll do it if it means having dwight and deron here for the next 5 years, especially where we will be on every FA’s list, especially veterans who want the chance to win with them and will take vet’s min and mles to come here

by BkNetsfan on Feb 19, 2012 8:35 AM EST up reply actions

again...people need to wrap their head around the fact

that dwight’s current team would have to decide NOT to trade him and despite what the owner Devos is saying, the fact remains that Dwight’s trade demand hasn’t been removed so the risk is still there for the Magic that they can lose him for nothing which would be a colossal mistake for that franchise. Too many feel like it’s the Nets choice to make for ORL whether to trade Dwight or not.

by Versifiervt on Feb 19, 2012 8:35 AM EST up reply actions

exactly

If the Magic call King’s phone today saying “we’re ready to trade him to you”, King will not tell Smith that they’d rather wait til FA.

by MrDollarBills on Feb 19, 2012 8:56 AM EST up reply actions

Of course it's not our choice

Otherwise, this would be an easy decision. But we do hold some leverage, because we’re Dwight’s first choice. And from what we’ve heard, it’s questionable whether he would sign an extension with LA, the only other real threat to get him in a trade.

I just don’t want the Nets to do what the Knicks did. I know obviously Dwight and Deron are the much better combo, but still two players can’t win a championship. If we do agree to trade for him, we should play the role of a merchant. We shouldn’t bid against ourselves and give up everything to try to satisfy Orlando.

Even though players will want to come here for cheap, any quality player that can get 20+ points or 10+ rebounds probably won’t accept the vet’s minimum.
