Brooks Selected 10th in Rising Stars Draft

Photo

Charles Barkley selected MarShon Brooks with his fifth pick (10th overall) of the BBVA Rising Stars Challenge draft on Thursday night. Joining Brooks on "Team Chuck" are DeMarcus Cousins, Paul George, Gordon Hayward, Kyrie Irving, Kawhi Leonard, Tiago Splitter, Evan Turner, John Wall and Derrick Williams. Team Chuck will be coached by Nets broadcaster Mike Fratello and Thunder assistant Mo Cheeks.

Before the draft, Knicks sophomore Jeremy Lin and Heat rookie Norris Cole were added to the pool of players. Both will play for "Team Shaq."

you do realize

That brooks and Lin are the same age right? And that Lin has accomplished far more?

by the mecca on Feb 17, 2012 12:53 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

doesn't matter whatsoever

Age has no bearing on this competition, only amount of time in the league. And Lin has had a great 7 games out of a 2 yr career, that’s not accomplishing a great anything. Again, that’s not the point either.

The rosters were set weeks ago, back when Lin had no credentials to be in it, and was very fairly left off. Then the NBA changed the # of players specifically to add to him. If that was fair, then they should do the same of the ASG, 3pt contest (featuring sharpshooter Kevin Love BTW), slam dunk contest, and skills challenge too.

by Murse Mike on Feb 17, 2012 7:52 AM EST up reply actions

You're right Lin has accomplished far more.

Been cut from two teams…

Lets compare season averages

A:13.9 1.8 4.2
B:12.7 5.1 2.4

The stats aren’t radically differen’t. A is Brooks; B is Lin.

Also Lin is a 2nd year player while Brooks is in his rookie year where he has never experienced an NBA training camp, and was given just weeks to prepare for the grind of the NBA. There is no way in moiso that Lin is far more accomplished.

you do realize

That Lin has been in the nba for 2 years and Brooks only started playing this season.

the fact that Lin was added isn’t a surprise to me (also Norris Cole) because his value to NYC and Marketting and NBA in general is very high right now.

But don’t tell me he’s earned it. 7 games doesn’t earn you anything win or not. Other players earned it, Jeremy Lin did not.

Not trying to demean what he’s done in that 7 games, he’ s played great and revitalized a NYC Team that was losing 11 out of 14 games before Lin came into the picture. He probably even saved Dantoni’s job, but in terms of who earned it this season?

Lin did not.

Lin has played what 10 games?

MarShon has been playing since day 1. Linson is a good story but he’ll wear down soon with the NBA schedule.

John Wall the steal of the draft, though. Had 22 assists in last year’s competition.

DeMarcus Cousins, Paul George, Gordon Hayward,

Kyrie Irving
, Kawhi Leonard (didn’t Shaw crown him steal of the draft?), Tiago Splitter, Evan Turner, John Wall and Derrick Williams and MarShon Brooks.

Seems legit

I knew Barkley would end up with brooks. I feel like Shaq has had a beef w/ the nets since they are moving from Newark

And with Mike Frattello coaching team Barkley I think Brooks will get a lot of playing time in the game

Yeah, that's totally unfair that they changed the rules specifically for a popular player

who happens to be on a 7 game hotstreak, nevermind that he did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING most of the season and that the names were set weeks ago.

Don’t be surprised if they add an extra all-star to each team just to squeeze Lin in there too

Lin

Shouldn’t even be in there. SMH!

This is disgusting

David Stern shows once again he has no integrity and will do anything for a dollar. Lin has played 8 games and makes it to the rising stars? And to make it not look bias they include Cole? What a bunch of crap.

The asian market was losing steam so this is a godsend to Stern and he jumped on it losing what ever integrity he had.

Nonsense.

by power_njerz on Feb 16, 2012 10:29 PM EST reply actions

Am I missing something here?

What else is David Stern supposed to go for if not the dollar? I don’t believe he is hired to build himself a likable reputation. He is paid exactly to make the dollars.

How many games has Marshon played?

20 games of good to OK performances vs 8 games where JLin has resuscitated a dead in the water team, won 7 games straight, and had record setting performance…

by NetsCrazy on Feb 16, 2012 11:29 PM EST up reply actions

7 games doesn't earn you anything

i don’t care if you scored 50 points in each of 7 games. Playing majority of this season earns you that right, playing 7 games does not.

Again, not to demean what he’s done in those 7 games. He’s done amazing, but not enough to earn the all star weekend IMO.

On top of that he’ll basically be an allstar starter next year due to fan votes.

by Roccor420 on Feb 17, 2012 11:09 AM EST up reply actions

let's be honest here

intergrity? The all star weekend is for the fans. The fans (not many Net fans though) want to see Lin, that’s very obvious. Since nothing else is at stake from this game, what’s it to us?

It's an example of how the NBA is fine with breaking it's own standards to accomidate popular players

another is the fact the Kevin Love, shooting a whopping 36% from deep, was invited into the 3pt contest

Chuck is hilarious….I love that guy.

Team Chuck all the way!

by Andy. on Feb 16, 2012 10:33 PM EST reply actions

so you think that it's perfectly acceptable to change standards and rules just to accomidate a good 7 run stretch?

Then why not also break the standard for the ASG as well just to add him in late, than change it back next season. It’s like allowing teams to break trade restrictions, just b/c it’s better for the league to allow the Lakers to trade away minimum salaries for max contracts even though they’re over the cap.

by Murse Mike on Feb 17, 2012 7:59 AM EST up reply actions

Not that I dont agree with you on it being a cheap move to change the rules,

but its different than changing league trading rules. this game is a meaningless exhibition thats likely to be the most watched ever thanks to this inclusion. its a good business decision regardless if who has done what and we have to remember the nba is a business. the better the business the better for all teams.

which is fine if you want to argue that point

but don’t tell me to stop bashing the inclusion. it’s not based on merit, it’s not based on anything but profit and market value to david stern. I don’t care, 7 games is 7 games. You do not earn anything even if scoring 50 points per game in only 7 game stretch. that’s why it’s called a stretch.

by Roccor420 on Feb 17, 2012 11:11 AM EST up reply actions

I think I am agreeing with you?

It just doesn’t bother me much. I was going to watch regardless thanks to Marshon.

8 games!!!

Thats my problem. The kid has only played 8 games and he is included.

Guaranteed if he played in San Antonio or some smaller market this wouldnt be a story.

If he had started the season i would be fine with him being included.
