In Moscow Meeting, No Indication Prokhorov Has Lost Interest in Nets
Standing in front a huge banner featuring Deron Williams and Barclays Center Brett Yormark told a crowd of 800 students at Mikhail Prokhorov's alma mater that the Nets are still aiming at fulfilling the owner's promise to bring a championship to Brooklyn by 2015. Yormark is in Moscow for three days on mainly a promotional tour aimed at Russian fans.
In the address, which included a surprise visit by the Moscow Financial Institute's most famous alumnus, and in interviews, Yormark stressed the Nets global perspective in marketing. "As the first foreign owner in NBA history, [Prokhorov] makes our club very attractive for fans outside of North America," Yormark told Sport Express.
"The championship ambitions of the owner of the club and the flexibility that we just talked about will let us consider a set of options for strengthening [the team]" he added. "One thing is for sure: we need new stars. In the NBA, it's necessary in order to qualify for higher ground. And I am sure in the summer, Billy King and his team will have done a good job to make Brooklyn proud of his team."
Also, at the event, Prokhorov informed students he would be spending Valentines Day with Ksenia Sobchak, often referred to as the Paris HIlton of Russia.

that's most of sports fans
nobody wants to waste their team rooting for a bad team, they want immediate gratification. Most people that root for Derrick Rose and the Buils do so because he’s a very good player to watch, but I guarantee they weren’t a Bulls fan during the Heinrich-Gordon days. In my opinion, this is fake sports-fandom, and I really dislike fairweather, frontrunning fans, but it doesn’t change the fact that this the way it is in American sports.
If we get Dwight, especially without giving up the house, the bandwagon will get huge. But at least we’ll know we’re the ones who stuck through the terrible, uncertain times with very little light at the end of the tunnel, and that the satisfaction we’ll get from seeing our team winning will be FAR greater than any bandwagoner can possibly get.

I’d rather risk that than give up all those assets. I like how the Thunder and old spurs did it. Miami looks great but that formula is a once in a lifetime fluke.

Shaq: Howard’s exit would be ‘travesty’

Howard
O’Neal
NEW YORK — Shaquille O’Neal says it would be a “travesty” if Dwight Howard leaves the Orlando Magic.
O’Neal also says Howard’s situation is not like his was when he left for the Lakers in 1996, because he says he wanted to stay with the Magic but had a better option.
With Howard, O’Neal says that there may be an “underlying problem” that makes the All-Star center reluctant to sign a contract extension there.
But O’Neal, speaking Tuesday on a Turner Sports conference call, says the All-Star game in Orlando will still be a great event even with Howard’s desire to be traded looming over the weekend.

Lemme summarize the Lin "debacle" for you all
Lin is a good guy, a hard-worker, and a modest player. People doubted him and but he never quit and is now making headlines
The media however, are the root of the hate here as they blow up EVERYTHING out of proportion. Someone mentioned Tebow earlier. Similar case (although Tebow was great in college) of two hard-working humble men who are unfortunately being uber praised by the media who have now set expectations beyond theuir capability.

the hype is inevitably gonna work against Lin eventually, when he gets worn out from so many games and can’t single-handedly carry the Knicks. what he’s done so far is still remarkable, but when you have THIS much hype, you’re bound to let down eventually and we all know how quickly Knicks fans turn on their team.

Well he's not American
And unlike Yao he wasnt good
that's what I'm saying.
the big thing isn’t that Lin is Asian, it’s that he’s Asian-American. He was born and raised here like any other American, yet was still the victim of unfair generalizations and stereotyping. If he came from China, speaking no English like Yi or early Yao, he’d have more in common with the typical Eastern-European big man than the typical American of Asian descent.

Yeah, it’s the Knicks…
but this guy is such a fun person to root for, and this streak he’s on is so compelling. I love rooting for him. I’ve had more fun this last week rooting for this ivy league undrafted FA than I have commiserating over this lame duck season of ours.
I just bought a Deron throwback jersey, and maybe I’ll buy a Lin.

And yes, it’s not in proportion, but that’s part of the appeal to me.
Gushing over Blake Griffin isn’t fun because he’s supposed to be good and you’re feeding into this ego.
Sensationalist reporting over Lin is analogous to the appeal. This guy is not supposed to be this good! But he is! Oh gosh! So let’s just have fun with this.

No way
An undrafted FA isn’t supposed to be the best player in New York and go on this scoring/assist tear…and win 6 games in a row.
Let alone a guy who went to a school that wasn’t supposed to prepare him for sports.
The story is compelling as is, but he’s actually succeeding.

I agree with you man...
This is like a Disney movie, we should all enjoy it as opposed to hating on him. The guy comes out of nowhere, always passed by and just kills it. You can’t hate someone for proving that dreams can happen

if it were ANY other team I'd be loving the story
and I’m still enjoying it as an NBA fan. WHO THE HELL could have predicting this story? that’s why I love following the NBA.
but it’s the Knicks. which means we will never stop hearing about it. the hype becomes overwhelming. and nothing is more obnoxious than over-inflated Knicks hype. 6 straight wins is impressive, but against mostly bad teams, except for the Lakers, is overrated.
Al Trautwig “can’t find the words”, lol give me a break. There are breakout players all of the time, it’s just inherently special because it’s happening on the Knicks.
I’m just ranting now. But hopefully this paints the picture of how frustrating it is for us Nets fans when the Knicks are succeeding and the whole world has to hear about it every hour of every day.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tri-state_area
“tri-state area” can mean a lot of things depending on where you live, and one can include NJ-PA-NY, especially if you live in central jersey. That’s what was always implied when people said “tri-state area” when I was growing up, but in NY that would obviously mean CT instead of PA, and in Philadelphia Delaware instead of NY, etc.
so I guess NY-NJ-CT is “THE” Tri-state Area, but not the only possible one, and not the one I grew up with.

The Knicks would be the Nets rival only based on location
nothing with history with the two teams.
by NJ Champ on Feb 14, 2012 10:16 PM EST via Android app up reply actions
not explicitly
but the media coverage and disparity in coverage, the Nets’ “little brother” status is what would make it a rivalry. Knicks fans wouldn’t consider the Nets their rivals, but almost any Nets fan would say they hate the Knicks more than any other team. it’s the same with the Clippers. there’s no other team they’re gonna compare themselves to and hope to fail than the Lakers, but the rivalry may not go both ways.

Lin knicks situation worst possible scenario for Nets/Yormark
Knicks now have the most beloved player in the league – and have the Brooklyn/Queens asian communities in their back pocket. Yormark can go to russia all he wants, but the knicks now have the most incredible story in the league.
The horrible thing is that, like it should have, it all started AGAINST the Nets and Deron specifically. Deron was having one of his typical, turnover filled, lazy efforts on defense, and gave lin the confidence to take a lot of air out of Yormarks Brooklyn balloon.
Yormark is in russia with the worst possible team you could ever have in the NBA. The knicks have the leagues most amazing story and a true excitement and the Nets are literally UNWATCHABLE. Watching the Nets games, this year especially, have been torture to watch on a nightly basis. This IS the worst possible scenario going into brooklyn.
This is WAY worse than a 50 win Melo led team making the eastern conference finals. The knicks now have an international, beloved star who is so different from what the average fan is used to, and they are now sucking in the casual fan as well. While the Nets cant even compete with teams like the pistons.
Deron is a MAJOR part of the problem. He gave Lin the confidence for this run to start. If he D’s Lin up hard in the first game, Lin probably comes out of the game and Toney Douglas comes in, and Lin is eventually cut. This is the NBA….and before all this happened, you literally had to have NO ONE to play point guard to give this guy a chance. Anthony Carter would have played over him, if he was on the knick roster that night.
Worst case scenario for Yormark. He can hire all the marketers and buzz people he wants, but his product is a joke.

it will take Dwight to bring balance to the force
that’s pretty much it. If the Nets don’t get D12, they are done in this area. No one cares about them now with Lin just linning all over the place
Nets can’t even begin to hype up their garbage product when you have the Knicks out there playing hard every night while the Nets go through the motions. It’s shameful stuff.

agree 100% -- this isnt russia, and the confident cocky statements just dont fly here
look at what has happened. The yormark prokorov situation has been horrendous, with bad hires like avery and billy king. Look at how humble Lin is when he speaks…people LIKE that. They DONT like a-hole, cocky, overconfident types like prokorov and whatever phony fakeness Yormark and his marketing goons are pushing on us.
Think about it, we were 12-70 a few years ago, and now have a “superstar” and are more unwatchable than ever. NOTHING has been improved, while the knicks (as much as I hate their f-ing guts) are very exciting with a beloved star.

Billy King was not a bad hire
But King should have been hired first so that he could hire the coach, and not the other way around. Avery Johnson is abysmal

Revising my earlier comment.
Sure, the competition has sucked, but over the past 2 weeks Lin has been the most dominating player in the NBA.
It’s the most improbable and mind-boggling sports story in the history of sports stories. There have been more improbable sports MOMENTS I can think of, but few stretches like this.
He statistically is having the greatest start to an NBA career in the history of the league.
This is so damn INFURIATING.
Thank God Amare is one more back tweak from becoming Jermaine O’Neal, because they don’t deserve this luck.
What unreal luck. UNREAL.

Sometimes we just have to move on.
The Knicks getting lucky with Lin is no reason to take solace in Amar’e’s injury history.
You could see the Nets as being hella lucky too.
-They got a billionaire owner committed to winning to prevent them from moving out of the area
-They got one of the top 3 point guards in the NBA after missing out on the number one pick
-Their 25th pick in the draft turned out to be a stud that tipped the scales in their favor in a Dwight trade.
-They are the front runners for the best defensive player in the NBA and the 2nd best overall player
-The franchise is on a fast track to being completely turned around just 3 years after a 12-win season.
There is a lot to be thankful for as a Nets fan. Every team has bad and good luck. Rolling with the punches is the best way to go IMO.
MarShon Brooks has the dreaded.

yea I agree
no matter how many beat writers give assurances that he’s headed here, I won’t believe it til it’s official. but at the same time, I don’t think we should be saying it’s all over already for the Nets in Brooklyn just because Lin came out of nowhere. If Dwight teams up with Deron, there’s enough room in NYC for two bandwagons.
by sheepareevil on Feb 15, 2012 12:05 AM EST up reply actions
So far it's still all talking points
No on-the-court evidence. I haven’t seen any lucky breaks for the Nets.
-They got a billionaire owner committed to winning to prevent them from moving out of the area
Yet we still haven’t seen above .500 basketball. Hell, we haven’t seen above .300 basketball.
-They got one of the top 3 point guards in the NBA after missing out on the number one pick
Who is currently being outplayed by an undrafted Harvard grad…by a wide margin.
-Their 25th pick in the draft turned out to be a stud that tipped the scales in their favor in a Dwight trade.
Who has yet to start more than 5 straight times without getting injured and, while a crafty scorer, shows little athleticism…at the 2 guard position.
-They are the front runners for the best defensive player in the NBA and the 2nd best overall player
We were also “at the goal line” in the Melo talks. Till it happens, it’s all talk.
-The franchise is on a fast track to being completely turned around just 3 years after a 12-win season.
A season and a half after the 12-win season, we have won 20 more games out of 103.
And then we also have:
- Our 2nd best player and key trade piece breaking his foot
- The center we traded for to replace said player basically going down for the season.
- Our starting SF/at-worse hustle backup SF unable to play 5 consecutive games in either of his first 2 years before suffering season ending injuries…both years.
- Our replacement SF getting injured for the year.
- Our one solid FA signing this year being unable to string together 5 games.
- Our cross-town rival seeing their superteam implode until having their season kickstarted by the aforementioned Harvard grad…against the Nets.
And let’s not even talk about the
- Being forced to trade Dr. J
- Petrovic dying
- Kenny Anderson/Coleman tease
- Jason Williams
- Ratner
Really, any other luck? Any other valid points?
ANYTHING!?

And a little fun math
A season and a half after the 12-win season, we have won 20 more games out of 103.
12-70 = .146 win percentage.
20-83 = .194 win percentage.
Yeah, that’s what I’d call
on a fast track to being completely turned around
by Anthony Perez on Feb 15, 2012 12:08 AM EST up reply actions
No....
He meant that we’ve won 32 games out of 103
32-103=.311 Win Percentage
As I said below
We are 32 – 111. That’s a .288 win percentage.
My point was that dude said we were on the fast track to erasing 12-70.
I consider 12 the benchmark. Anything above 12 wins is actual improvement.
Therefore 20 out of 103. .194 win percentage.
by Anthony Perez on Feb 15, 2012 12:48 AM EST up reply actions
I think Max's point is pretty spot on.
The Nets are about to turn their franchise around dramatically. They’re going to go from being completely irrelevant to one of the most talked about teams in the league. From a horrible team to a championship contender.
Patience is a virtue.
yikes
that’s a lot of absolutes there buddy. I think that we are going to get Dwight too, but Net Income raised a solid point the other day…nothing is set in stone.

their front office is aggressive. They signed Lin and got lucky. the Knicks have ran CIRCLES AROUND THE NETS.

The knicks have made reckless gambles for over 10 years
and theyve been the garbage dump of the NBA for that entire stretch
If it wasnt for them being able to sign a minimum player due to lack of point guard depth, theyd be buried for the next 4 years at least. Don’t glorify what the knicks are doing as if it’s some kind of grand though out blueprint. They were screwed… SCREWED until they hit the lottery with Lin. There is no way anyone on this blog would have thought about switching places with the Knicks 3 weeks ago. They just got lucky plain and simple. And I would never want the Nets to go down that road

Am I wrong for liking Avery’s patience. Huffing, puffing, throwing chairs on the court and players under the bus will not benefit this team right now. It isn’t a good team with the cap space held on to for Brooklyn and the injuries on top of that.

exactly so Nets should play with a chip on their shoulder...if they truley wanted to win games they could
by RandyOreens on Feb 15, 2012 12:55 AM EST up reply actions
they can steals some wins like they did in Philly, and almost did against the Clippers, Wolves, and Pacers
but they just aren’t good enough to consistently beat teams. A chip on the shoulder can only carry you so much.
by SovietBrooklyn on Feb 15, 2012 12:59 AM EST up reply actions
Actually
We are 32 – 111. That’s a .288 win percentage.
My point was that dude said we were on the fast track to erasing 12-70.
I consider 12 the benchmark. Anything above 12 wins is actual improvement.
Therefore 20 out of 103. .194 win percentage.
by Anthony Perez on Feb 15, 2012 12:46 AM EST up reply actions
Oh nevermind...
We played 29 games this year already, so 32 of 111 is actually a .288 win percentage
I just vented about the Knicks on my FB status
And my Knicks friends started saying the Nets suck and I’m a hater and all that jazz.
Here was my reply.
Ya I’m hating and not hiding it whatsoever. 2 weeks ago you guys couldn’t win a game with your big 3 and were looking at $55 million of nothing sitting on your bench.
2 weeks later you you have an undrafted Harvard graduate literally – according to the NBA record books – is having the best start to an NBA career in the history of the NBA.
Load up a list of the top 10 players ever. Pull up the list of every player inducted to the Hall of Fame.
He’s literally having a better start to his career than any of them did.
That’s just…. What!?!?!?
This is like NBA 2K in real life.
Actually it’s more like NBA Jam.
Lockout basketball.

"Your 2010-2011 New Jersey Nets - It Is What It Is"
Seriously. It's unbelievable.
I wonder if he sold his soul to the devil.
Never believed that was a real thing. Jeremy Lin is making me think otherwise.
by Anthony Perez on Feb 15, 2012 12:53 AM EST up reply actions
you're really that unwilling to give the guy credit?
undrafted players have succeeded in the NBA player, and the reasons for Lin going undrafted can be traced back to ethnic stereotypes. he led his high school team to the California state championship. He once showed up both Kemba Walker and John Wall. the kid can ball.

Credit is one thing
Having a better to start to your career than any player in the history of the NBA is absurd.
by Anthony Perez on Feb 15, 2012 1:46 AM EST up reply actions
starting career
he had been playing end of bench minutes for a year and a half. it’s not like he’s completely inexperienced. the situation was just right for him (Melo and Amare out, D’Antoni system, bad defenses) to put up big numbers.
by sheepareevil on Feb 15, 2012 1:50 AM EST up reply actions
In his first 6 NBA starts
He has better numbers than any NBA player in their first 6 starts in the history of the NBA.
He didn’t really play for a year and half. That means his opportunity – his start – is really now.
by Anthony Perez on Feb 15, 2012 1:53 AM EST up reply actions
And much like Victor Cruz was injured in his rookie year and didn't really play
So everyone considers this year as his first year.

LMFAO to the Cali State Championship
You do realize that most NBA players won state championships in high school right?
Jordan Williams averaged 36 ppg and 20 rpg in his senior year in high school and was his school’s all-time leading scorer and look what he is now.
High school stats and accomplishments mean nothing in the NBA. Every NBA player was incredible in high school

California's a pretty big state
He was probably competing against “better” future-nba players on his way to that title

He’s no Jason Kidd….
Who is this Jeremy Lin everyone is talking about.
It’s all about Andre

in this wacky lockout shortened season doesn't it just seem right that the Knicks find Lin and Emmett answers
That is just wishful thinking of course. But I’m a homer and I have the right to such optimism damn it

Ok, good night. People trolling and you're biting.
Not going to end well. Happy Valentines day from Brooklyn.
To everyone who is like "Why would you wish bad on a good guy"
He’s just playing for the wrong team. For example, there were some good Nazis, but we HAD to take out the Nazis.
And yeah, there were actually some good Nazis:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Rabe
Both are featured in two excellent films. The Pianist and John Rabe.
Dude now you are bringing Nazis into this...

And who knows, may have been a decent dude
But he played for the wrong team.
Just like some Storm Troopers were probably pretty good guys. But they worked for the Empire, so they had to be taken out.
So if you’re keeping score at home, I’ve compared Jeremy Lin to Nazis and Star Wars.
Yup, believe the hype. He does make you go Linsane…

Amazing
Godwin’s law (also known as Godwin’s Rule of Nazi Analogies or Godwin’s Law of Nazi Analogies) is a humorous observation made by Mike Godwin in 1990 that has become an Internet adage. It states: “As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1.” In other words, Godwin observed that, given enough time, in any online discussion—regardless of topic or scope—someone inevitably criticizes some point made in the discussion by comparing it to beliefs held by Hitler and the Nazis.
Godwin’s law is often cited in online discussions as a deterrent against the use of arguments in the widespread Reductio ad Hitlerum form. The rule does not make any statement about whether any particular reference or comparison to Adolf Hitler or the Nazis might be appropriate, but only asserts that the likelihood of such a reference or comparison arising increases as the discussion progresses. Precisely because such a comparison or reference may sometimes be appropriate, Godwin has argued that overuse of Nazi and Hitler comparisons should be avoided, because it robs the valid comparisons of their impact.
It’s rare an Internet meme slips by me. This one is one for the ages.

What makes it even greater
Is that it probably originated like this.
STEP 1: Once upon a time someone referenced Hitler/Nazi’s for a 10th time in a month in an old-school newsgroup that Mike Godwin frequented.
STEP 2: Mike Godwin says, “Dude, you always bring up the Nazi thing.”
STEP 3: Another member says, “That’s so true! I’ve seen that a lot.”
STEP 4: Mike Godwin replies, “LOL, yeah dude it’s like a rule. It’ll always eventually happen if people keep going.”
STEP 5: Mike Godwin Law is born.
STEP 6 – 6,000,000: People keep iterating on it.
STEP 6,000,001: A Wikipedia entry is made with language like “Godwin argues” as if he’s Isaac Newton.
STEP 27,982,213: It lands on NetsDaily and changes our lives forever.

depends which kings team/tyreke shows up
Evans when he focuses on D can be a great defender, he just gets lazy.
also Isaiah Thomas is as quick as anybody so he can give Lin problems too

Avery
Official Member of DO NOT TRADE MARSHON Society!
To be successful, apparently Avery's Defense System requires it to be manned by NBA All-Defensive Team.
Lol so a Knick fan that I work with is telling me that if it doesn't work out they should trade Carmelo to us
Lol I’m telling him Nets wouldn’t want him, he doesn’t believe
This Board is Eerily Similar to Feb. 2011
Almost a year ago this place was an absolute morgue when it was announced Carmelo was going to the Knicks. People were looking for the nearest bridge to jump off of. Then we get Deron Williams. We draft MarShon. Yeah half our roster has been out, but I thought this was a borderline playoff team with a healthy roster to begin with.
A top 3 NBA player STILL has us atop of his list and although he comes of as wishy-washy, it was stated that he has not rescinded his trade demand. Yes, it appears half of Western Civilization has fallen all over themselves regarding Jeremy Lin and the Knicks, but is anyone surprised? At the end of the day, remember this: If Dwight is in constant communication with Deron and Deron is having lunch every day with Billy King, I would stand to imagine they know a whole lot more about this Dwight situation then they’re letting on. We just have to be patient.
