D-Will Named MetroPCS Spokesman

MetroPCS, one of the founding sponsors of Barclays Center, has hired Deron Williams to be its national spokesman, the latest endorsement deal for the Nets captain, following those with Red Bull and Bonobos, a mens' clothier.

MetroPCS capitalizes on how D-Will was a member of the 2008 gold medal-winning Olympic team. MetroPCS also has an endorsement deal with USA Basketball.

"I'm excited and honored to join forces with a brand that has grown from its beginning in my hometown of Dallas, into the fifth-largest facilities-based wireless carrier in the United States," said Williams.

Hopefully they are limited by geography

what I mean by that is i’m hoping these endorsements end if he goes to the Mavs or any other team except for a tri-state. Unfortunately this means that he could very well go to the Knicks to maintain these contracts/endorsements if he wants to leave NJ.

Anybody know if these type of contracts have stipulations geographically?

by Roccor420 on Feb 14, 2012 12:22 PM EST reply actions

Anybody knows, if rich people can arrange endorsements for their players in exchange for favors (from the big guys) !!!

Don’t know if that’s possible in this part of the world, but I’m sure some company nobody knows will offer deals to D12 and D-Will for some favors …..(ka-ching)!!!

Quetion

In the event that Dwight were to hit FA.. how would the Lopez thing go?

Can we go over the cap to sign him or is that a myth thrown around by Nets fans? Also can we go over the cap to sign our rookies? Cuz assuming we get the HOU pick, we dont have the CAP to sign Dwight AND Deron AND our rookie picks unless im missing something here.

Someone please fill me in

as long as we keep lopez and don't trade him

we have his bird rights (3 years) and he will be an RFA so we can match any offer and go over the cap to do so.

at least that’s what we’ve discussed in in the past.

by Roccor420 on Feb 14, 2012 12:41 PM EST up reply actions

Yes we can go over the cap to sign both Lopez and Hump. The lakers Payroll is almost 80 million. You can sign your own players as long as you’re willing to pay the luxury tax amount that comes along with being over the cap. I really hope that this goes to free agency. I feel with what we have now along with a pick or two or three, We have the potential to be a championship caliber team with that back court front court and a deep bench!

by smorris8 on Feb 14, 2012 12:42 PM EST up reply actions

Draft picks are applied a cap hold based on where they are drafted

before free agency starts. So that factors into the calculation too. See what I wrote just below.

WE WANT LOPEZ! clap clap clap clap clap

by BrooklynNets on Feb 14, 2012 12:55 PM EST up reply actions

That's not correct

There is no way the Nets could retain Howard, Hump, and Lopez. The Nets would at the very least have to renounce Humphries’ rights in order to have the cap space to sign Howard. You can make it work with Lopez (or Hump I guess but Lopez is better) because of the value of the cap hold (Lopez = $7.5 million) is less than the value of the contract you will sign him to AFTER you have capped out by signing Howard.

by BrooklynNets on Feb 14, 2012 12:50 PM EST up reply actions

funny how

we are a terrible team right now, but with everyone healthy and you ONLY add Dwight – we are champion contenders with a deep bench.

Dwill / Farmar/ Gaines
Brooks / Morrow
Damion (injured) / S. Williams
Lopez / Humphires
Dwight / Sh. Williams / Petro

by Roccor420 on Feb 14, 2012 12:53 PM EST up reply actions

SF is still in shambles

. . . even if there were no injuries. but your point is correct that we are very deep once we get healthy and dwight in the fold.

by Mookie Blaylock on Feb 14, 2012 1:23 PM EST up reply actions

Basically it works like this

For Lopez (as well as Hump and Stevenson, etc.) there are cap holds until the Nets renounce the player’s rights. Lopez’s cap hold is $7.5 million, way below what he will earn in free agency so it’s a blessing for the Nets.

For the Nets to retain Williams, Lopez, and to add Howard here’s how it would have to work:

$36.5 million for Howard and Williams + $7.5 million for Lopez cap hold = $44 million

Contracts of Morrow, Farmar (player option), Petro and Shawne Williams = $14.43 million

Contracts for Jordan Williams and Marshon Brooks = aprox. $2 million

Cap hold for rookie contract conservatively estimated at $3.5 million.

That’s about $64 million. This year’s cap is $58 million so that doesn’t work. You would have to trade at least two of the Shawne, Amo, Petro, Farmar group for expiring contracts. Even then it’s a little more complex.

Nets would then be able to sign Brook Lopez after they went over the cap but would be close to luxury tax.

by BrooklynNets on Feb 14, 2012 12:47 PM EST up reply actions

the best part of this is having a rich owner who i don’t think would mind going over the cap by 10 million or so when he is building a billion dollar arena that he will use a platform to get even more money. Especially with a chamionship caliber team with superstars that are known globally in the biggest market in America. He instantly becomes a household name!

by smorris8 on Feb 14, 2012 12:56 PM EST up reply actions

thanks man

Damn.. we could possibly move Farmar as his value is high but Shawne and Petro are back breakers. Idk how we could possibly move them..

Marshon VS Iman: Bring the rivalry on my nuiikkkass!!!

by WR3 on Feb 14, 2012 1:00 PM EST up reply actions

I think the key is Hump

Farmar has value and Morrow could easily be moved for an expiring. If the Nets were confident enough to move Hump, and convince him to do an extend and trade, they might be able to get a good first rounder out of it. They’ll make it happen and at some point you will know whether the Nets believe Howard will be traded in March or not. If he stays put look for the roster to go through a state of flux.

Isnt Morrow part of the plan?

Dwight likes him and Deron likes him…

But why does Hump make a difference? Either way we have to find a taker for Petro or Shawne or both.. no easy task

Are you kidding?

I don’t view this season as NBA basketball and I don’t care if this team stinks. I’d rather Deron feigned some injury rather than go through 5 games in 6 days. Let other superstars do that and wear down their bodies while Lopez and Williams stay strong for next year.

This season is going to end careers prematurely. Nets should suck and get the draft pick and deal with all the uncertainty with fortitude. Brooklyn baby, Brooklyn.

by BrooklynNets on Feb 14, 2012 1:15 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think Farmar will opt out

Here is a partial list of other free agents point guards this summer: Kirk Hinrich, DJ Augustin (Restricted), Andre Miller, Jason Kidd, Chauncey Billups, Goran Dragic, Ramon Sessions (Player Option), , Raymond Felton, Steve Nash, Deron Williams, Randy Foye, AJ Price

Most teams have a good young starting point guard already on their roster and the teams that don’t have one would probably prefer a proven vet. There’s a glut of PG’s in the league and if you look through rosters, not many teams need a back up PG.

Critical Success!

Not entirely true
That’s about $64 million. This year’s cap is $58 million so that doesn’t work.

The Heat have $79 million in salaries this year. There’s a bunch of workarounds.

in that you can go over the cap for exception guys and minimum guys (like the heat and lakers do every year). you can’t go over it with max free agents, though.

If this trade is going to happen (which signs are pointing to, it's just ASG-delayed)

Then think of how much better of a decision it would be to capitalize on all of the press from the D-12 trade by revealing the new franchise logo and colors then, at the height of an NBA-reshaping trade. It has a much better effect than a struggling team announcing an image change

If metro pcs wanted Deron they could have had him years ago. I’m pretty sure they realize that he is more attractive a commodity being in the NY market than the Dallas market. Not a surprise

This deal was a no-brainer for MetroPCS.

As one of the Founding Partners of the Barclays Center, it only makes sense for them to also activate around the Nets star. They can leverage their relationship with the Nets in a more impactful manner by making Deron the face of their brand.

While their signage throughout the Barclays Center can only go so far, Deron can be an asset for them outside of the arena in various promotional and hospitality functions.

I’m sure this is not a very big deal financially for Deron. Probably a couple hundred thousand per year. MetroPCS is a regional company.

HOWEVER, the fact that he is willing to commit to MetroPCS shows his willingness to stay involved in this major market. Very very important sign.

Is this bad news potentially?

Admittedly, a half empty view. But could he be taking advantage of his window with the nets to sign long term deals because he knows he will be getting out of town soon and he wants the best bid. If he really thought Dwight was coming and he was staying, wouldn’t his best bid be in 6-9 months? Maybe he is locking in deals before he demands a trade to dallas. Apologies for being the naysayer. Go nets!
