Losing Streak Reaches Six As Nets Fall to Spurs

Photo

The effort was better than it was a night earlier, but the Nets were no match for the Spurs at the Prudential Center on Saturday, dropping their sixth straight game and falling to 3-10 at home.

The Spurs took control early in the second quarter and led by 15 at the half. The Nets cut the lead to six midway through the third period, but the Spurs answered with a 15-3 run to finish the quarter. They led by as many as 21 points in the fourth before settling for a 103-89 victory.

San Antonio became the Nets' fourth straight opponent to shoot better than 50 percent from the field. The Nets themselves shot just 40 percent. Deron Williams was again the high scorer, finishing with 27 points and eight assists. Kris Humphries added 15 points and eight rebounds, while Jordan Farmar filled the boxscore with 12 points, six boards and seven assists.

"Come see some magic"

is what the billboard read on the Turnpike with DWill and D12’s pics on it. My wife and son both saw it first and their sentiment, “wow, i guess we really are getting Dwight soon!”

I know it’s promoting the Nets/Magic game in a couple weeks but they could’ve easily worded it, “Watch Nets battle Magic!”

by Versifiervt on Feb 11, 2012 10:26 PM EST reply actions

not saying we're getting him a couple weeks...

…but it’s such a tease and last time i saw something like this was on MSG commercials when Knicks were chasing Melo…they had a commercial promoting Denver’s visit and the voiceover was saying, “come see melo visit the garden for the only time this season….or is it!?!?”

Jordan Williams

does the guy need to wear boxing gloves to get in there? It is like Avery likes big guys who can’t catch a cold and they make Brooks and D-will look awful for trying to get them involved.

Definitely one of the WORST Nets teams of all time..

And that’s saying something.. Not quite as bad as a few years ago but close… I mean every night is total destruction…

Say all you want about the injuries but this is bad folks. D-Will is completely zoned out.. Hump is showing who he is.. An average player and we got NOTHING going for us…

Avery needs to do a better job of getting balance from this offense.

Nets are not good enough to be standing around. Effort was ok tonight.

Can someone also explain to me why Avery takes players out after the smallest mistake?? I don’t care how good he will do with good players , it’s what he does with these guys that says it all.

stein said that dwight's camp will be pushing for a resolution after ASG
And if that doesn’t generate enough stress in Central Florida, there’s this helpful forecast from one source close to the situation: “I think Howard’s camp will be putting on a lot of pressure for a resolution come Feb. 27.”

look at what adellman has done in MIN after they got rid of jokebox rambis. avery needs to go like yesterday. I’d even take back calipari over avery. at least players like calipari.

The have an interior presence and now a PG, so they can space the floor - something we still can't do.

Their shooters are hitting shots, ours aren’t. Shwane is averaging 3 less points than last year, we have 5 guys in the regular rotation that are averaging 5-6 points or less, and the next highest rebs average after Hump’s almost 10-1/2 are Shelly’s 5.

That’s all bad. Be surprised that Deron isn’t sulking every game!

by bkfire on Feb 12, 2012 12:08 PM EST up reply actions

Seriously?

There would be about 3 to 4 Nets that would make the Knicks team, if everyone is fully healthy

Obviously he hasn't.

A) He wouldn’t be disrespectful like that.
B) Avery lets DWill do whatever he wants, he isn’t coaching because there is clearly no offensive system being run.

by NetsROC on Feb 12, 2012 12:16 AM EST up reply actions

It isn't going to happen

The media has been pretty consistent in their lack of faith in the Nets roster. The Nets stinking is as expected for them especially with the comedy of injuries. Most in the media I think realize that the idea of firing Avery right now is so outside the realm of reality that it isn’t even worth discussing. The organization is not going to create instability right now by firing their coach. This has been a lost season since we couldn’t get a deal done for Dwight and opted to fill the roster with expiring cap space. Can we stop the delusions that this current team would be anything short of terrible under any other coach.

this makes no sense

The Giants are world champions. We’re talking about the Nets. Huge difference

by MrDollarBills on Feb 12, 2012 12:24 AM EST up reply actions

but like Giants fans, Nets fans are displaying the same knee jerk reaction calling for a coaches job prematurely because it is the most simplified answer to how we can change the team immediately. How can fans possibly criticize Johnson’s system when we don’t even have the personnel to execute any system successfully?

by SovietBrooklyn on Feb 12, 2012 12:52 AM EST up reply actions

What system? Even with garbage he should have one.

He doesn’t seem like a good coach. Deron Williams is a great point guard and he had him at the 2 and Gaines the 1 nuf said.

by shea23 on Feb 12, 2012 6:41 AM EST up reply actions

He has a system but in order for it to function he needs an interior presence

So right now we are seeing a system based on spacing and our only strength which is perimeter shooting since there is no interior threat to play the inside-out game.
Deron is playing the 2 at times once again has to do with our roster. He is the only player that can create offense off ball. MarShon is great in ISO and creating with the ball in his hands but he just is not very good right now at moving without the ball, Morrow is a spot up guy, and so is Shawne Williams. Avery is using what he has and Deron playing off ball last night was actually our most effective offensive tool.
Of course he doesn’t look like a good coach right now bc our team stinks. Joe Torre look like a bad coach while coaching the Mets, and Bill Belichick looked like a bum coaching the Browns. Do you remember before 20070 when the city of Boston wanted Doc Rivers run out of town?

The only concern is....

That if we continue to lose, making the playoffs will be harder and harder. Even if we get Dwight, making the playoffs this year would be tough, and some article a few months back mentioned that Dwight might not want to play with the Nets this year esp if they cannot make the playoffs. Obviously he’d rather come here as a FA.

And also there will be some huge backlash from alot of Magic fans. If Dwight is traded here he is gonna be bashed for leaving a winning team and joining a team that is 10 or 15 games under .500, and all of this was to have a better shot at winning a title. Plus the Nets would be pretty drained of talent esp if MarShon is dealt.

D-Will
Morrow
Turkoglu
Hump
Dwight
isn’t bad, but that’s not beating Miami anytime soon. Which all leads me to believe that Dwight will come here as a FA

by davidnets on Feb 12, 2012 1:15 AM EST reply actions

the thing that kills me about that and i know this might be a stupid question but what’s the point of staying with orlando and wait til free agency? just to make the playoffs and lose because there not making the finals. if they were that caliber team then he wouldn’t be trying to get traded. am i right? this should be like a band aid just leave already before it lingers and takes too long

by avilanets85 on Feb 12, 2012 1:35 AM EST up reply actions

it’s also kind of weird that next season’s prized free agent wants to play for us even though we keep losing. has anyone ever heard of that before for a losing team?

exactly. all i’m saying is it’s been awhile during an actual season where a big time player has requested a trade to team with a losing record

by avilanets85 on Feb 12, 2012 1:24 AM EST up reply actions

A losing team going to a huge market though

Plus the reason we keep losing is partially because of Dwight. We could of signed Nene and others but we chose to keep the cap space open for Dwight. This whole thing seems to be falling into place like it’s been planned….hmmmm

I didn't catch Friday's game

But Saturday it looked like a mix of rust, good defense, and MarShon trying to do too much with the ball. It looked like he was trying to play more of a role of distributor which lead to hesitation and bad passes leading to turnovers or missed scoring opportunities.

I met the guy last year in Dallas but I got the information Friday evening in Paris from this source. It could be wrong or DH could change his plan but this personn directly works with the Nets. He is one of the main link between the ccompany and the franchise. You all know I live in Europe maybe it will make you understand which sponsor I’m talking about.

I really hope it happens in the offseason

Nets have the 4th worst record right now, if they keep this up it could REALLY pay off next season

by muwu on Feb 12, 2012 8:48 AM EST up reply actions

But nobody knows what the Magic is gonna do. My source and, I think, Elonepb’s one, was sure of one thing: Even if Dwight is traded elsewhere he will be a Nets in July.

My personal point of view is that the Magic will trade him at the deadline. If I got a source telling me that DH will be a Nets I think the Magic front office knows this for a while too. They will deal him….if they aren’t foolish.

Would Dwight really be better than Lopez at this point?

I’d rather hope Lopez returns and delivers a 20-8 season and that we use our assets to get OJ Mayo. Wait for the off-season to get Dwight.
