Nets Suffer Worst Loss of Season

It couldn't get over fast enough. In as ugly a loss as there has been this season, the Nets got blown out by the Pistons, Although the final score was 109-92, it wasn't that close. The Nets were down 30 in the third, 27 in the fourth, the biggest margin of the season. It was also the Nets' fifth straight loss.

Individually, the game was filled with unforced turnovers, missed layups and a general lack of energy and focus. The Nets ran out to 7-0 lead early, but the Pistons then went on a 24-8 run the rest of the quarter. In the third, the Nets fell behind 78-48, then 100-73 in the fourth.

Want another indicator how bad things were? Johan Petro was the high scorer with 16, the beneficiary of big minutes in a blowout. Deron Williams and Jordan Farmar finished with 14, but Anthony Morrow scored only two, Kris Humphries five points to go with six rebounds. Marshon Brooks, in his first game back, played 17 minutes and scored seven points. For Detroit, Jonas Jerebko, Rodney Stuckey and Greg Monroe finished with 20, 19 and 18.

Deron Williams said after the game,: "I got nothing for ya’ll tonight. It’s the same ol’ story every game. It’s kind of hard to really answer what went wrong."

Avery's got the best job in the world. The only coach who can coast along with the "I ain't got no talent to work with"

How convenient. Avery must dread the prospect of DuWhite coming; he might actually be responsible for the W/L column then…

All year this team played with heart

Regardless of the score, they never gave up. Tonight, they quit on themselves. They stopped caring and it was evident. Tonight I thought I was watching 12-70. Tonight I am ashamed to be a Nets fan.

I love the Nets...too bad they don't love me...

I think Avery may not be the problem but him and his assistants don’t have the answer either. I wouldn’t stay here if I was DWill nor would I come here if I was Dwight.

I can, because I'm not a believer yet

He’s had four good games and his usage rate is absurd. He’s played against DWill off a tough back to back, the Lakers off a tough back to back (guarding Derek Fisher) and the Wizards and Jazz.

I want to see it longer and more consistent before I believe he’s actually this good.

Tebow did it for awhile but eventually got torched against the Pats. It’s bound to come to an end eventually.

And remember, D’Antoni’s high offense system makes players look like offensive star. See Felton, Raymond.

D’Antoni’s high offense system makes players look like offensive star.

This is definitely a component to his success. D’Antoni’s system gives PGs the breathing space to inflate their numbers. Toney Douglas and Shumpert aren’t natural PGs, so they didn’t have success, but put any natural PG into D’Antoni’s system and his numbers will be inflated. His usage rate is absurd if you combine his points, assist and turnovers, anyone will see that. D’Antoni’s system doesn’t call any set plays. Lin is free to roam the court and do what he wishes with the basketball.

I don’t understand why Net’s fans can’t take that attitude with the Knicks. I’m a Knicks fan, but I’ve been to Nets games in the swamped out Meadowlands. I grew up in NY before moving to Jersey in the midst of the Kittles/Kidd/Williams run. I have no desire to see you guys fail and though the feeling may not be mutual, hating the Knicks aint gonna help things for the Nets or make too much difference in the outcome of games.

Not trying to convince anybody into rooting for the Knicks, first and foremost because everyone seems to hate Knicks fans including other Knicks fans.It aint an easy gig at all and in that sense there should be some understanding there. These two teams should be able to sympathize with each others struggles. I don’t watch or pay enough attention to your team to say that I am a fan but I can appreciate your team despite being a hardcore Knicks fan. Basketball is basketball no matter what jersey you cheer for. If you don’t like the Knicks fine. But most Knicks fans aren’t even thinking about what so and so teams thinks about Lin unless we’re actually playing against them. The best thing the Nets as a team, organization and fanbase can do, is to ignore the new found Knicks hype (as hard as it can be) and concentrate on the Nets current issues. Business as usual, make like it doesn’t bother you. The Nets will eventually get better like all teams inevitably do, the Knicks will get worse, I’ll be miserable again and it’ll be the circle of life. I mean it’s either that or you can just be happy for us because anything else just comes off as petty.

That’s all in the past now.

by Proballxx on Feb 10, 2012 10:48 PM EST up reply actions

and without melo or amare

how is this possible. i will admit knicks bench is clearly better than ours because they would be starting playing for the nets. but still, 38 points for jeremy lin outscoring kobe’s 34. lin shot lights out, he was like 13 for 22.

Like the talking heads are saying...

…Lin actually IS making them play better. The offense flows much better with him on the floor.

The Knicks otherwise has a d-league level bench not unlike ours. Just look at the games from a week ago or two.

My point is that Andy is laughing partly because the Lakers got embarrassed by an Asian

If he weren’t laughing at Lin’s ethnicity, he would not have mentioned Lin being Asian in the first place. So isn’t that disturbing? Or else his sentence was just poorly worded.

Yes.

The idea you intended to convey was that people don’t know who Lin is, so they only know him as the “undrafted Asian from Harvard” — like I wrote, it was poorly worded, but you cleared it up.

How badly the Nets lost to a terrible Piston team or how lethargic we looked? Seriously, what the Kmicks do actualy does have an effect on our franchise. In Brooklyn, if Lin can be a big time piece for them with Melo, Amare, and Tyson, we may have a very empty arena next year.

good point

i was just thinking that. there are a lot of chinese in brooklyn and would be key to get their support for a profitable franchise. add international sales and you’re golden. if the knicks somehow retain him and he continues this pattern, it’s terrible for the nets. hopefully he fizzes out more towards the mean average in terms of his points and stats. right now he’s playing all star level. regardless I think the nets should actually look to pick up Lin. with our luck he’ll probably fizzle out or we’ll ask him to do everything he can’t and he’ll play terribly but with moving to brooklyn and adding Lin to the roster would help the international image of this team.

Nets have so many injured players.

However, this team is playing uninspired ball and seem to just be going through the motions. They have no desire to compete and no desire to win. Hopefully if they get healthier and get a few guys back, they can turn this around.

I am so sick of seeing Sheldon, Sean, petro….garbage players on the court. This team is also so un-athletic. Thank you BK for continuing to wait for a D-Howard trade while this team continues to fall apart…

Move this garbage of a team to Brooklyn already; let them play in a High School gym across the River for the rest of the season; because they definitely do not resemble an NBA team and can’t win in Newark anyway or any other arena for that matter.

by NetsNewark on Feb 10, 2012 11:13 PM EST reply actions

It doesn't help that they are exhausted.

You have third stringers playing major mins in an abnormally condensed schedule. These players aren’t built for this kind of grind. Shawne and Sheldon are playing starters mins on back-to-backs, for example. It’s not their lane.

The Nets have nothing to play for right now.

These games, the whole season is meaningless. Half the current roster won’t be here in a few weeks, and those that do stick around will be playing with a completely turned over roster. There isn’t a better justification for going through the motions.

From last season, this team has signed/released upwards of twenty players. It’s a revolving door.

And that is the point. Many New Jersey Nets fans have been lost, which, is a shame. The Nets orgnization is finally trying damage control with honoring New Jersey's 35 year history.

I agree that the commute to Brooklyn is not the most appealing. Now, if the Nets are able to land Dwight and that is a big IF, then like always there will be the normal band wagon fans that will jump on board. BUT, that will not be fans that are already Knicks fans like Proky says will happen.

I was at the Knicks game tonight

Got free tickets from the boss (lower level).

Watching Lin play~ the dude is pretty smart. Splits the double team before it comes to him. Passes the ball at the right moments (although he did have some bad passes early).

Just seems like a high bb iq player. also when he commits to taking it to the hole he does it all the way. Either draws the foul or gets it in the basket.

Rooted for the Lakers, but they couldn’t do crap. Kobe stunk it up for the most part and the rest of the lakers stunk it up as well.

Dwill is here, but nothing changes.

I consent DH12 will come to NJ. That’s the best way.
But if DH12 would come, is it over?
Then we have to think more about focusing the champ.

At least, our team should be playoff team if we have Dwill.
But if we still at the bottom, there is something wrong.

Although I am happy for the kid Lin

and detest the Knicks still…..I think this is going to be more short-lived than it appears..

So far, from what I’ve seen of him, all he does is drive to his right and can only shoot somewhat well from the left side of the court, favoring his right hand…

He has no left. How can other teams not see this???? He goes to his right EVERY time.

by NetProfit on Feb 11, 2012 1:03 AM EST reply actions   1 recs

I think you're wrong

I happened to be at the game tonight because of free tickets and I have to say you’re wrong about this. The thing the guy does well is change speeds very well like Chris Paul. On the double team he’ll just dump it off or split the double, but

1. he can go left, he just doesn’t have a strong left drive/layup, but he can use it to get around you
2. he’s clearly learned to shoot over much longer and bigger guys in college days. He wasn’t doing circus shots, but slightly off balance fades. Fro example he’ll drive in hard, accelerate, then back off slightly and fade shot just over your hands. In another play they rotated Gasol on him cause of a screen, he called an iso, then just slow-dribbled up like he was measuring Gasol’s length (who was backing off to prevent the drive and covering his RIGHT hand). One second later squared up open shot that Gasol could not contest.

I think you’re simplifying basketball way too much. Chris Paul is not “super athletic anymore” but you can’t actually stop someone if they can change speeds and dribble low to the ground.

by anothernetsfan on Feb 11, 2012 2:33 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

I've noticed that too

Remember, he’s played against crap with fresh legs. Nets and Deron off a back to back, Lakers off a tough back to back in Boston, then Wizards and Utah. D’Antoni’s run and gun system makes some players look like offensive stars, when in reality they are not.

by ZR on Feb 11, 2012 9:01 AM EST up reply actions

Silly. By your analysis, any NBA team can call up superior D-League talent and he would be excelling against tired NBA legs.

the difference is their players look like they play basketball

while ours continue to look like they shouldn’t be in the nba. it’s upsetting sometimes.

lawrence frank contributed to us getting destroyed against pistons. avery was simply out coached. “Switching to a Zone Defense” was the answer avery issued down the stretch, which obviously did not work.

i saw no plays being run on offense, no screens, no cuts to the basket. and for whatever reason we got the ball exactly where we wanted but the play didn’t go down.

only bright spot is after a rough start, brooks ended up scoring 7 points. not too shabby for light minutes and coming back. had a number of consecutive turnovers but i hope that’s just rust.

with lopez coming back in like 3 weeks hopefully, things could very well change. the schedule favors us then i believe and we can make a stretch. but we can’t continue to lose 5 or 6 games in a row.

If Lin keeps up this, Knicks might enter

Dwight sweepstakes. I don’t know whether anybody mentioned this but Melo is expendable if Lin keeps this up. Knicks can offer Melo, Chandler, Fields or Shumpert for Dwight, Hedo and Duhan. That works for both organizations. This is bad for Nets and believe it or not we helped them to start this by letting Lin score at will against us.

this may be unpopular but I have to say it

Avery Johnson really should have more pressure put on his shoulders. I’m not saying that he should be fired(yet), but this idea that we should blame only the players and overlook Avery’s garbage coaching this season is ridiculous.

Regardless of how piss poor this roster is, the system that we have in place is abysmal and gets little out of the players.

Meanwhile, the Knicks are out there with a line up of Chandler, Jeffries, Walker, Fields, and Lin, and beat the LAKERS.

The Nets have very few excuses. Deron Williams’ comment is on point.

Avery is not getting fired

Unless Phil Jackson is interested in coaching the Nets, we aren’t going to create instability by firing our coach at this point. Our team stinks right now that’s just the reality. No available coach is going to turn this patch work team into a competitive team. We are talking about how great the Knicks are doing….ummm a week ago wasn’t everyone talking about how their coach needed to be fired? We sacrificed the lame duck Jew Jersey season for a shot at Dwight Howard in Brooklyn, and then suffered injuries that our already thin team can not support. We should blame the players because the team stinks, can we stop living in a Disney fantasy world where a coach is going to come in and give a rah-rah speech, introduces an unorthodox scheme and coaching methods and the team goes from balls bouncing off their face and air balling free throws to world champions.

you're missing the point

No one deserves a pass on this team, including Avery.

by MrDollarBills on Feb 11, 2012 3:36 AM EST up reply actions

I agree

I always felt the criticism towards avery was a little unjustified last season considering he always made the team played hard despite the melo-drama and everything, but this season has really made me see how bad of a coach he truly is, he’s not holding our guys accountable, our guys doesn’t look motivated to play hard for him and i’m sick of his moral victory speeches after every loss…

That being said, still i’m willing to stick with him for now as it’s a little unfair to put it all on him as well when he doesn’t have a full team with brook, brooks, dwill all on the floor. Also, players deserve some of the blame as well but avery as a leader of the team should get his guys to play hard for him at the least and i don’t see it now

our guys don’t look motivated to play hard for him

bingo.

lack of talent is one thing, but looking utterly unprepared and giving zero effort? inexcusable. Everyone deserves to get their back kicked in.

by MrDollarBills on Feb 11, 2012 3:39 AM EST up reply actions

I disagree.

A large majority of our games, our guys have played hard for him. It’s only recently when the effort level has tailed off because guys our exhausted by the grind of the condensed season for third stringers. The orange has been squeezed juiceless at this point, and we’re now seeing the results. It’s not because of a lack of will imo; there’s just no stamina left in the tank.

Honestly

You know what keeps Knicks relevant? Their fans, if you guys remember clearly the last time the Knicks mattered was when they played SA in a lock out season, and as bad as they have been since then, you’ll never get a Knick fan to admit how much they suck, and as much as I hate them for that, I respect that! I am tired of coming on this site and seeing these so call fans complain about a team that is barely a team, our PG has been playing his behind off with what he’s got (which is nothing right now) and when he win he’s the man, when he lose he worst than a PG who no one has been paying attention to, until now ( and believe me, this Lin thing isn’t gonna last, because coaches will start preparing for him) He sees no double team like DWill does! If you’re a Net fan, support your team, if not jump on the Knicks bandwagon and go find a Lin jersey, but enough of this flaky support that we get on this site, it’s really making me sick! Man up, and hope for better to come like real fans!!

sorry man

this team got annihilated and the effort was poor. This has been the same story for the past 4 years. You can’t expect people to sit and be happy when the team goes out there and doesn’t give a damn.

I don't support dellusions, its not healthy to live in a fantasy world.

I don’t respect knicks fans that pretend there team was any good and I won’t pretend the nets are either.

by shea23 on Feb 11, 2012 5:56 AM EST up reply actions

That’s just my point, the Nets aren’t any good right now, but people come on here, and carry on as if we’re built to win right now, we have one all-star and about three guys who have talent, but are not use to having to average atleast 20 for us to have a chance. Some time playing hard just isn’t enough, and people on this board need to realize that and stop acting like fair weather fans.

by Killer_Rich on Feb 11, 2012 10:49 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Also, I don't know why Nets fans don't just go over to P&T and gush over Lin. That's a more appropriate location.

Welp, Lin just earning himself a fat paycheck in the off season.

I think he can get 9 mil per from a team (if he keeps it up, not saying he would have 28ppg all season). You think the Knicks can afford him next year?

He wouldn’t be doing jack crap.

The Nets have a much better player than Lin and he looks like he wants to murder himself.

I hope BKing

Is planning which players he might want around Dwill, Dwight and Lopez next year.

Back Up PG – We need a Snow type of back up PG. Defender that can hit open shots. I am tired of Farmar and Gaines. IMO these guys along with Dwill go spoiled in Europe. Their heads have gotten bigger.

Back Up C – We need a Jason Collins type of player. SheWill can fit the bill but he needs to work on this hands.

Starting SF – We need someone that can defend and hit open 3s. Bowen type of guy. Bogans was the guy but with this injury who knows.

The Pistons have won 4 games in a row.

The Pistons!

Before this, they had losing streaks of 3, 6, 4, and 7 w/ no back-to-back wins in the entire season.

If the friggin Pistons can do it, why can’t the Nets?

by CurlyBeast on Feb 11, 2012 8:32 AM EST reply actions

I think they have more scoring options than us.

Nets need Deron, Farmar and Morrow, at least, to score 20+ each in order to have a chance to win. Brook Lopez will fix that; can’t wait until he returns.

Im not a Jeremy Lin fan

He cant shoot, if you notice alot of his baskets are mismatches with big men. The Lakers also kept Matt Barnes on Lin. I bet if they did the same thing with Farmar he would have went for 40. I guarantee you he does not do well today.

It's not Avery's fault

For all the Net Fans that want Avery fired. We don’t have enough talent and injuries have killed us. Paying a condensed schedule dressing 9 to 10 guys a night will drain a team. It is what it is can’t do nothing about that. Doc River is a great coach but he went through not having enough talent for a couple of yrs before being great.

We are going through the motions and yes I hurts like hell but we will be fine by the time we reach Brooklyn. I have faith in who is running it. Proky, BK and Avery will make it happen.

How Bad Are We?

All I know is Avery has been out coached by LFRank twice in a row. I have seen Frank make adjustments and they have payed off big. What has Avery done? He has to be responsible for the lack of awareness of his players who do not make the right rotations on defense. Unless they are utterly stupid, they are consistently leaving men wide open. Coach should be calling them on that and teaching that, but it is all getting worse. I have never seen so many wide open shots — well, not true, we saw this with Kiki and last year. This team is atrocious and I would not be surprised if DWill calls DWight and says Dallas. or ABB: anywhere but Brooklyn. Avery does not impress me.

Perfect Storm

Nets Tank.

Knicks Rise.

Jeremy Lin comes out of left field. Dominates Kobe and the Lakers.

This must be a dream within a dream within a dream. Or maybe this is real.

Lin’s stock rises….knicks now have REAL tradeable assets…arguably more so than the Nets right now. Blegh. This is worse than what I thought the worst case scenario would be. Not only do we run the risk of going to Brooklyn with an all scrub team…but this Linsanity things is truly putting the Knicks on good graces with the national media. ugh.

Just opinions being voiced...

…nothing else. Part of being a fan is to know when you’re team can’t move an inch. If there weren’t so many losses, maybe thoughts like “fire Avery”, “Deron needs to gtfo”, “jeremy lin is God” wouldn’t go through mind. Most of us find it easier to go on with watching the Nets if we find some kind of reason behind the losing.

I, for one, say it’s the Lopezlessness. There’s two stars on this team, they don’t do so well one without the other.
