Doing the Dwight Howard Math

HoopsWorld's Steve Kyler, with an assist from Larry Coon, tries to dis-spell various "myths" about Dwight Howard's options, before and after the trade deadline.

He looks at how much Howard would really leave on the table as a free agent; when is the optimum time for him to leave Orlando; even how much taxes he would have to pay (and whether there is that much of a disparity).

Bottom line for Kyler is "no one, including the Orlando Magic, has the details entirely right. It’s becoming clear that the Orlando Magic may not have as firm a grasp on their situation as they believe. Either that or they are deliberately putting out false information which wouldn’t be a stretch either."

Bottom line: He's getting traded.

The Magic would be bat**** crazy not to trade him because he really wouldn’t be leaving “$30 mil” on the table.

Some Knick fans I know are trying to tell me he’s a top 5 PG. One even tried to convince me that he may be in the MVP discussion right now. Apparently, Knick fans don’t realize he only played 3 games (big minutes) for them…

Bingo.

The NBA posted a link to buy a Lin jersey with the caption “Linsanity!”. There were hundreds of comments from people that could easily be divided into 3 categories: Knicks fans who are delusional (One person called Lin “The next John Stockton”). People who are already sick of hearing his name because he has not done nearly enough to warrant this attention, and finally, People of Asian descent from all around the world who are already tearing down their Yao Ming posters to make room for the Jeremy Lin ones. This is a gold mine for the NBA and they know it. Don’t be surprised if Jeremy Lin is voted into the All-star game as a starter next season.

by NuttinBut on Feb 10, 2012 5:07 PM EST up reply actions

I just hope

In the end, (not a statistical average of 3 games only) that he earns his place and not solely because of his marketting value overseas.

It’s Ironic but I DO support and like Jeremy Lin. I don’t think he’s the next great thing but I do believe he has a role as a permanent point guard in the NBA. Somewhere along the lines of a team that doesn’t need a STAR point guard or a backup to say a team that HAS a star point guard.

but I want him to earn it. It’s not like Yao Ming or Yi who came from china. he is an American who HAPPENs to be asian. Dude barely speaks any Mandarin.

by Roccor420 on Feb 10, 2012 5:15 PM EST up reply actions

I agree. None of this is his fault. All he has done is worked hard enough to get this opportunity and now he's making the most out of it.

The Knicks will get rid of him to make room for an overpaid player who was a star years ago and has next to nothing left in the tank. That’s their MO. I bet they’ve been courting Brandon Roy HARD lol

Why do Nets have to talk when we lost? We Laker fans now, hiding behind Lakers to beat Lin/Knicks?

by Malorkayel on Feb 10, 2012 6:32 PM EST up reply actions

I think this is somewhere in between the Melo and the LeBron situation

Cleveland knew LeBron was leaving…the Heat still sent Cleveland two first-round draft picks and two second-round picks, as well as a large trade exception

Then think of that crazy 3-team trade the Knicks pulled for Melo.

Our situation falls somewhere in between.

It would be cool to not give up our first round pick (really just to sign Dwight in the off-season) but if a trade happens, that seems unlikely, even if Orlando knows he’s gone and the Nets know he’s coming.

by SadNetsFan on Feb 10, 2012 3:55 PM EST reply actions

theres one thing i disagree from that article

when he says he’ll get paid that 5th year with a new contract from the new team…um hes no longer going to be in his prime 4 years from now, his new contract 4 years from now will not be paying him nearly as much. So yes hes still leaving quite a lot on the table.

by Prokyswallet on Feb 10, 2012 3:55 PM EST reply actions

He'll be 30.

I’m sure he’ll get paid again.

by djeterfan on Feb 10, 2012 4:07 PM EST up reply actions

There is no way you can say that.

Look at Chandlers contract

"We're not there yet, but we're going somewhere," Johnson said. "And we're going to Brooklyn. We're not going to contract. We're going to Brooklyn."

by Atronic on Feb 10, 2012 4:14 PM EST up reply actions

Garnett & Duncan say hi

If he’s really worried about not getting a full max contract at age 30, he could sign an extension after 2 years.

Of course, with the logic you’re using, maybe he has all the more incentive to opt for an even shorter (3 year) deal. Then he can hit free agency at age 29 instead of the perceived over the hill age of 30.

by TheNetsFan on Feb 10, 2012 4:33 PM EST up reply actions

no. no. no .no. NO!

30 years old is basically about 16 years before Kareem Abdul Jabbar retired. Dwight Howard will be VERY effective until about 36-38 years old, so any discussion of his declining value NOW is beyond absurd.

JUMP ON IT, BK! (either now or in the off-season). Just don’t let him slip away.

I’m gonna disagree… its assumed that Deron and Dwight have talked. Deron is practically the GM. Deron knows he needs help, if we weren’t in the Dwight sweepstakes why wouldn’t we be making any other moves? Why hasn’t any other rumors come up? Instead we just keep on picking up people who aren’t teams. Its simple, Deron knows what Dwight is thinking. He is as good as ours.

You do all realize

this also means that if for whatever reason we don’t get Dwight and can’t sign ANYONE to keep Deron Williams from leaving….he’ll leave as well. That means DWill isn’t leaving 20+ million on the books either, realistically at 30 years of age he’ll easily get paid another max contract.

the only thing holding Dwill and possibly Dwight to Brooklyn? Marketing contracts. It may be cheaper to live in Florida against the tax rate, but you’re not going to get the same marketing contracts in Brooklyn/NYC as you will in Orlando. hell not even Miami.

read the comments in the article

the whole state taxes thing is totally overblown as well, since players play state taxes to whatever state they play in. So if Dwight plays for the Magic in NY, he pays NY state taxes. I’m sure the extra large market will more than make up for the difference

I hate The Knicks and there fans as much as anybody else, but reading some of the things on Lin's Wikipedia page really makes me feel for the guy. Racism of ANY variety should not be tolerated.
Lin has regularly heard bigoted jeers at games such as “Wonton soup”, “Sweet and sour pork”, “Open your eyes!”, “Go back to China”, “Orchestra is on the other side of campus”, or Chinese gibberish. Lin says this occurred even at most if not all Ivy League gyms. He does not react to it. “I expect it, I’m used to it, it is what it is,” says Lin. The heckling came mostly from opposing fans and not as much from players. According to Harvard teammate Oliver McNally, a fellow Ivy League player did once call Lin a “chink”.

which is why I support him

but not the knicks. I dont watch knick games, I don’t comment on forums or buy his jerseys or anything. But as an asian man who grew up in America who considers himself AMERICAN who HAPPENS to be Chinese….i can’t help but support. My DREAM was always to play in the NBA, now we all know that didn’t happen and for the most part will never happen, but the fact that he graduated from HARVARD….and chose to play NBA basketball, after being looked over by scouts and coaches and GM’s time after time after time. Getting moiso’d on because he’s asian, peopel saying physically he’s scrawny and can’t play in the NBA, undrafted in Havard even though he played well, landed on Rockets and Golden State and NEVER played.

I hated him for doing what he did to the Nets when Dantoni put him in the game a week ago. But I loved the fact that he’s getting his spotlight. Knick fans are ridiculous saying things like he’s the next superstar. I don’t hold him in such high regard, I just feel he has a definite place in the NBA as a permanent point guard. He is not better than Dwayne Wade, Lebron James, Deron Williams, Rondo, Chris Pual, etc etc etc. but he IS better than other players in this league.

no melo, no amare and knicks win 3 games against sub .500 teams. When the scouting reports come out and coaches realize they HAVE to guard him and start preparing teams to play against him? His 20+ points a game will disappear and so will his assists.

Realize that Devin Harris was an allstar at one point, till other defensive scouts figured out his game. Of course injury also had something to do with that but many a “next superstar” players that have come into the NBA their first time outs are deemed basketball gods…only to find out they are human once again after teams figure out their games.

The same will happen to Lin. I’m not saying he’s a good player, I’m saying he’s not a superstar player and the “Linsanity” is so ridiculous it’s making him look bad actually.

Oscar Robertson averaged a triple double for a whole year...
Robertson put up in 1961-62, just his second year in the league: 30.8 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 11.4 assists per game-an average of a triple-double for an entire season.

I don't know about you guys

But I’m more than happy to gamble on getting Dwight to keep Deron instead of trying to get good on a secure way to keep deron.

by i says on Feb 10, 2012 5:53 PM EST via iPhone app reply actions

Soooo....the same logic applies to DWill then right?

DWill wouldn’t lose so much to sign elsewhere if he doesn’t want to join the Brooklyn cause. Ouch. This really scares me now. Cuz although Kyler points out the taxes wouldn’t be a big deal…relatively speaking…but when it comes to DWill…he can actually make more per year in Dallas because whereas Dwight would be losing about 2 million or so are year by leaving tax friendly Orlando for tax heavy NY…DWill would be the exacty opposite, he’d make 2 million more in the tax friendly Dallas. Am i getting this wrong? And like Kyler says, you can’t factor in the salary lost in that 5th extra year staying a net vs. only 4 years in Dallas cuz if he’ll more than likely sign another contract before than which would make up for that lost 5th season if he stayed a net. So Dallas have more of an advantage other than just being where he grew up. He can actually get more money there…even if it’s only 1 to 2 million more when NY taxes are factored in.

by Versifiervt on Feb 10, 2012 5:54 PM EST reply actions

You are absolutely right

the only difference is with Dwill is that if he stays here we will have the cap space to keep him and get Dwight. If he goes to Dallas, they will only have the cap space to get him.

I am not worried about losing Dwill. He can pull a Brand even after we get Dwight and sign somewhere else.

Financially, Dwight can recover from a $30 mill hit easier then Dwill. Dwight will always make more endorsement money then Dwill.

Why

Why would DWight come here? Chicago, La, Mavs, last time I checked they were better than us and know how to play the game. The Nets have nothing but DWill. Nothing. Their defense is atrocious. Why would he risk his glorious career to come here and be ridiculed and exposed the way DWill is being ridiculed and exposed? It is not worth it. I’d love to have him here, but I really don’t believe it. I just don’t see why.

Chicago and LA dont have a Pass First PG.

Mavs have a very old Pass First PG.

Then you add Brooklyn and My Adidas. Then you see the future. Barclay Center will have a HUGE EMPTY CENTER in front of the Arena. A LOT OF SPACE FOR ONE or TWO Statues.

It’s like you guys don’t remember when Nate Robinson was the talk of the town in NY…

Yes, things get over-hyped. Yeah, this guy might be a no-name backup next week, next season, or for the rest of his life.

It’s a cool story and it’s good for the NBA and ESPN…it’s not everyday that a D-League scrap heap pickup goes to one of the biggest markets in the NBA and lights it up just as the team looks like it’s falling apart (and consequently helps with a HUGE demographic).
