Nets Sign Keith Bogans

Photo

The Nets announced Wednesday morning that they have signed 6-5 guard Keith Bogans and waived Larry Owens.

Bogans, waived by the Bulls in December, started 98 games for them last year: 82 in regular season and 16 in the playoffs, averaging 4.4 points in regular season play, 5.0 in the playoffs.

Overall, he shot 40 percent for the regular season and playoffs, jumping his three point shooting from 38 percent up to 42.4 percent (25-for-59) in postseason.

Bogans is 31 years old with eight years of experience in the league. He has a reputation for being a strong perimeter defender. "Keith will give us defensive toughness and experience," said Billy King. "He will add depth and versatility to our perimeter." His contract, a vets' minimum deal, is guaranteed and will pay him around $600,000.

The team is adding defensive players to help guard the perimeter so we can stay in more games and yet all the “fans” on here are laughing about it? The team is 7-15 but we have a decent schedule. We have been playing hard in most of our games recently and almost came back to win last night. It’s no wonder this team is moving. I’ll be their courtside tonight rooting them on to a win. They were being sarcastic about us diagnosing MarShon's little toe fracture and whether he should be able to play with it.

I’m thinking he could play (if he was Kobe Sr.) unless someone stepped on it again and it swelled up.

By now the initial swelling might be gone, so it might not be hurting.
However, everything revolves around Dwight, so maybe that want to wait a few weeks so that there won’t be any fear of re-injury.

Could indicate that MarShon would be included in DH deal and now Nets get a legit guard in Bogans, for the DH era.

by DJ HeavyDuty on Feb 1, 2012 12:33 PM EST reply actions

Qualified yes

Don’t know how deep your league or team is, but DWill is a top ten fantasy player, Pierce (though he has been hot recently) is a top 30, and Felton has been a major disappointment. He came into camp out of shape and hasn’t really picked it up. So I would do the trade in a heartbeat assuming I could pick up a reasonable replacement on the waiver list.

Meh... that's fine.

Bulls fans didn’t really get too worked up when he was shown the door. Offensive liability. Defense, at least he will try hard and give our other guys some motivation to get stops. He has post season experience- a plus. Spurs background. Also a plus.

Is this a game changer? No, more of a stop gap IMO. But, that’s fine. We have plenty of gaps that need stopping.

That said I wonder how long he can possibly survive in a Nets uni without sustaining a 6 week injury?

Likely because they also only had one legit scoring threah who can create for himself consistently..

..as in D. Rose.

I’m not saying we should be all hyped about this move either, but we need heads badly. The team has shown it can score against most teams who don’t play for OKC or CHI. But in the end, we just need heads to throw out onto the floor who can at least defend.

was saying last night we need some one BOGANS and we got him.. nice!

we NEED defense BADLY. He is also a solid 3 pt shooter.

He is Stevenson pretty much but much more mobile & hits 3s at around 38%

I would start him over Extra E.

Bill Simmons has some Nets/Dwight stuff.. people wont like it- cue the trashing Bill Simmons comments
Even stranger, Orlando GM Otis Smith seems to be paralyzed by the proceedings — after Brook Lopez’s broken foot knocked New Jersey from the bidding, Joakim Noah’s trade value went in the tank5 and the surging Clippers shook off Howard’s overtures, poor Otis was suddenly left with Dallas and the Lakers as his only real suitors.
14. What happens to the New Jersey Nets if they don’t get Howard?

After gutting their team for Deron Williams (Derrick Favors and the no. 3 pick in the 2011 draft), New Jersey faces a potentially humiliating situation: If they can’t land Howard within the next few weeks, they have to reverse course and frantically shop Williams over watching him play out his contract, then sign with his hometown Mavericks in five months. They can’t move to Brooklyn this summer without a star to market, right? (Sorry, I don’t think this picture is cutting it for 2,000 billboards in the tri-state area.) That means they’d have to flip Williams for an All-Star who’s locked into a deal already. You know, someone like Pau Gasol (who might be past his prime, or close), Amar’e Stoudemire (and his uninsured contract) or even (gulp … ) Joe Johnson. Wow, it’s hard to believe that things might play out badly for an NBA franchise owned by a free-spending Russian oligarch who splurged on Travis Outlaw, Johan Petro, Jordan Farmar and Anthony Morrow as his first four signings, hired Billy King, lost interest within nine months and decided to run for the presidency of Russia.

by BigTom on Feb 1, 2012 2:33 PM EST up reply actions

It’s time for Dwight Howard to stop worrying about LeBron James’ public fall from grace; about how “The Chosen One” went from being America’s most beloved athlete to perhaps its most disliked. Howard’s dance with the Orlando Magic appears to be more about public relations maneuvers rather than basketball.

Like a cat burglar, Howard continues to tiptoe around all the trade scenarios surrounding him because he doesn’t want to suffer the kind of public backlash that hit James in 2010. Howard, like Chris Paul and Carmelo Anthony before him, believes if he definitively states he wants to leave his current team, he’ll be painted as a villain, as a hater of the Magic. Howard doesn’t want to be seen, as Joakim Noah said, “Hollywood as hell.”

But Howard should realize that departing Orlando won’t leave him as scorned as James simply because everything is magnified when it comes to James. Because James is basketball’s biggest superstar since Michael Jordan — on and off the court — his positives are more celebrated and his negatives more scrutinized. “Melo” and “CP3” put Denver and New Orleans through much more uncertainty and made more of a mess than James ever did, yet both suffered only a fraction of the criticism. In fact, outside of Denver and New Orleans, their relocations were celebrated.

Howard shouldn’t worry. An exit from Orlando to a larger city probably won’t hurt his brand. That being the case, it’s time to end the charade. Howard needs to force a trade to the New Jersey Nets.

and you always give your team a CHANCE to get something back in return. Not leave it all up in the air like LeBron did. Starting tonight, 6 of the next 8 games are at home.... we play Detroit 3 times...

we have to make it account.

Also last nights game concluded the first third of the season
7-15 After 22 games. or 30.2 winning %

I am somewhat pleased with the record considering our injuries, amount of away games and tough schedule. 2 bad games come to mind that should have been Ws. Losses in Cleveland(first time a round) and L against the raptors at home without Bargs.
Should be 9-13.

Anyway, next 22 games or the 2nd third are as follows:

Vs DET – WIN
Vs Minny – Tough game but SHOULD be a WIN
@ NY – I expect a LOSS here
Vs Chicago – LOSS
VS Detrot – WIN
@ Detroit – LOSS
Vs San Antonio – LOSS
VS Memphis – WIN
@ Indiana – LOSS
@ Chicago – LOSS
Vs Bucks – WIN
@ NY – WIN
Vs Orlando – LOSS
@ Dallas – LOSS
@ Boston – Win
@Charlotte – Win
@ Miami – LOSS
vs Clippers – WIN
@ Charlotte – WIN
Vs Houston – WIN
VS Bucks- WIN
VS toronto – WIN

I have as marked down at 13-9 after those games. Meaning a record of 20- 24 right at the deadline. Why? Because we get a much easier schedule and more home games. Plus I expect Marshon and Lopez to come back around the last week of February or March 1st

After those 22 games, which ends at March 14th RIGHT at the deadline, the last 22 games start with a game vs ORLANDO… interesting.

Has anyone sat courtside this year? Reason I ask if I have courtside seats tonight and I usually go in at 6:00 (for 730 game) through VIP doors since courtside club opens at 6. However someone on Njnets.com told me unless I have a VIP all access card I won’t be let in this 6:30. Just curious if anyone knows for sure since I have never had a problem in previous years. If you are true courtside rows AA-DD on the floor

then you get access to the Cure Courtside Club which opens at 6. Includes free food and beverages. And you usually get in at 6 when they open instead of 6:30. But they need to be courtside seats. Not the padded seats in the stands.

I think Larry Owens was going to be waived in a few days anyway, before his salary becomes guaranteed.

Hope BK knows what he is doing, because no room on roster for another addition.
Clearly BK plans on trading one or 2 guards by the trade deadline – two from Morrow, Farmar, MarShon and Stevenson.

I still think DJames has value and if he isn’t traded, he indicated he might still be back this season, if therapy goes well.

I was big against bringing JR Smith, now warming up to the idea.

A guy who could play SG and SF, good size and is not as much of a chucker as some would have you believe. Running the lane with DWill – would be pretty sick.

JR doesn't like to operate within the confines of an offense

at least that’s the complaint I heard from George Karl

Morrow and Petro for Stephen Jackson is very fair for both teams.

Were not giving up Morrow for Jackson

Why does everone want to get rid of Morrow???

The boy can light it up. Best 3pt shooter in the game. His defense is decent and he has a fair post game. SMH I’d only get rid of him only if Ryan Anderson is involved.

by Freezy82 on Feb 1, 2012 2:17 PM EST reply actions

I’d say decent post game, and below average defense. But from what I’ve seen, all the headband colors matching Dwill’s and the camaraderie they have together we should keep him.

Morrow is the neo-Lopez

Backing down the small PGs that can’t guard DWill and have to switch to him

by stenpoint on Feb 1, 2012 4:04 PM EST up reply actions

Should trade Farmar b4 Morrow, definitely.

2011-2012 season prediction: 22-44

And I'm fine with that. One of the original leaders of the "Dwight Howard, not Nono Hilario" movement.

Bogans is a good 6th option

behind the two guys who run on the court with squeegees but ahead of Petro.

Gotta admit, adding Bogans will help us defensively, but he’s very similar to what Stevenson provides. So imo both shouldn’t be on the floor at the same time unless Brooks is point or Lopez is on fire, otherwise our offense will be stagnant.

Well Stevenson probably isn't probably going to be back for a while

I think this means Farmar is going to be traded for a SF soon

Cuz we don’t need him to play SG minutes anymore. MarShon and Stevenson aren’t going to be available for a few weeks so we’ll need someone to hold down the backup SG minutes before trading Farmar.

Critical Success!

Surely Trent Hassell is next

Continuing a long Nets tradition of filling the roster with third rate swingmen. Jarvis Hayes, Steven Graham, Ron Mercer, DeShawn Stevenson, Rodney Buford, Trent Hassell, and now Keith Bogans.

What would you have done?

Signed nobody? Also Stevenson when healthy started for a Finals team last year you saw what he could do when he rendered Derozan useless in the first Raptors game also hitting his three when he had his legs under him.

Bogans is a scrub.

It’s an OK signing, I guess, if the reason he’s here is to fill a roster spot after Farmar and/or Morrow are traded. Otherwise, this team isn’t good enough to give him more than a few minutes. He’s a guy good teams (Orlando, Chicago) played because he doesn’t take bad shots and can reasonably guard his man. He’s basically a blank. Nets have no use for that.

I think a week or 2 in the NBA pays them more then the whole season in the DLeague?

If we regularly rotate a few DLeagers onto the NBA roster, then players will want to play on our DLeague affiliate?

by Lynbrook on Feb 1, 2012 3:49 PM EST up reply actions

This would be a great signing if we were a skilled offensive team! What we need to surround Brook with are good to great perimeter defenders.

When Brook and MarShon come back, I’ll be happy that we have Bogans, although, then again, almost any Chicago fan I talk to really thinks he is not a good player.

For now, eh, whatever.

I think he might

as long as he is in shape. We are so short-handed.

Bogans is a solid signing

I think it’s a good one at this point in the season with all the injuries. He’s a veteran defensive minded player. Nets obviously need this, and I did hear Avery mention that he liked Bogans last week in an interview before the Bulls game- maybe Bogans was watching?

play perimeter defense, stand in the corner, catch the ball, make the 3's

you’ll get very far on this team if you do that

I like Bogans too.

I knew last year he wasn’t good enough to be a starter on a great team like Da Bulls, but I thought he had game, and was a solid defender. Now we get to see how far out of shape he is. I was surprised that someone else had not signed him already. Owens brought nothing to the court. I think he was afraid to shoot. I guess they are going to use Bogans in a three guard setup. Maybe in a couple of weeks, Bogans can be a contributor?
