Game 10 - Nets vs. Hawks - Monday, January 9, 7:30 p.m.

Photo

Third time's a charm? For the third time in two weeks, NBA scheduler Matt Winick has the Nets and Hawks going against each other. Twice before the Nets have lost to the Hawks, the first time in the home opener by 36 and then in Atlanta by seven five days later.

The Hawks are among the big surprises in the NBA, being the only team to beat the Heat and now sporting a 6-3 record. But they will be without Marvin Williams, who sprained his left ankle in Saturday's win over the Bulls

For the Nets, the injury list is also the news. Mehmet Okur (back spasms) and Damion James (foot) are both out for Monday's game. Brook Lopez (broken foot) gets his walking boot removed this week, but is likely out another month. He is missed.

It's a crazy year

So many blowouts of good teams (and bad teams) that really shouldn’t be. The Hawks are a very talented team, but they need their 3 point shooters to be hitting in order to spread the floor enough.

Unlike the Nets, who need their 3 point shooters to be hitting to score any points.

"I don’t think they are going to do anything right now because we’re winning," Howard said after a 104-97 victory over the Sacramento Kings improved the Magic’s record to 6-3. "Even if this is the last season, let’s go out hard, regardless."

When asked if he expects Orlando to trade him by the NBA’s March 15 deadline, Howard said: "I don’t think so." If Howard were to try to depart via free agency, the Magic would have the advantage of being able to offer him a fifth year on a new contract worth about $28 million. Howard could even decide to postpone his free agency by a year and utilize the final-season option of his contract (worth $19.3 million) and then leave the Magic in the summer of 2013 if they haven’t already traded him, sources close to him said.

There is no way he will opt IN. He wants out like “out of this world”.

He will be traded by the deadline 100%, unless the owner wants to really screw him with that 5th year and wants to risk on losing him for nothing (you never know with an old dude of 85+ yrs).

this season, there are many crazy stat lines

There are stars with average stats (at least by their standards) like D-Will and Rose, people with ridiculously low FG and 3pt %’s, and average players with inflated stats, like Kyle Lowry and Andrew Bynum. I doubt that it lasts throughout the season

ITS A VVVVVVCCCCCCCCCCC THREEEEEEEEEEEEE

by Keysta101 on Jan 9, 2012 9:42 AM EST up reply actions

D-Will is not a scorer

he’s a distributor, He needs people around him to keep defenses honest. It’s like not having a running game in the NFL. Teams will drop back and cover the pass knowing you’re not going to beat them running the ball.

As soon as some other Nets start hitting open looks instead of bricking them, Williams will regain a lot of his effectiveness.

by Murse Mike on Jan 9, 2012 9:46 AM EST up reply actions

I don't get how people don't get

him scoring through double team and then another help defender coming at him is not the same as

him scoring when it makes sense because teams cannot d-up too tight on him because he can pass to someone and unlike our current team those players would score

i.e. Dwight would look like a horrible player if he doesn’t have any three-point shooters to pass to.

by mvmt84 on Jan 9, 2012 9:49 AM EST up reply actions

D-Will will re-sign with the Nets

Let’s not forget, no matter where and if Dwight get dealt, he and D-Will will opt out at the end of the year. The Net will have the opportunity to make a pitch either way.

Worst case, the Nets do nothing this season. So going into the off-season, the Nets will have a high draft pick, Lopez, Brooks, AND the ability to sign Williams and Howard to max deals. If the Nets can’t land Dwight, then they can make a front loaded, max offer to a prized RFA.

Dallas cannot offer anything close to that.

by Murse Mike on Jan 9, 2012 9:39 AM EST reply actions

How does it fan out for Dwight financially

1. he opts out and sign with us
2. he opts in and sign with us the season after that via FA
3. he opts in and get traded to us and sign extention w/ us

Is there any merit for him to opt in should he not be traded this season, merit big enough to overcome one more year of this headache?

by mvmt84 on Jan 9, 2012 9:40 AM EST reply actions

no, there isn't

and option 2 doesn’t work b/c cap space doesn’t last in the NBA. Brook Lopez will be coming off his rookie contract this off-season so the Nets will lose the ability to star far under the cap.

by Murse Mike on Jan 9, 2012 9:43 AM EST up reply actions

Thanks Mike

by mvmt84 on Jan 9, 2012 9:52 AM EST up reply actions

Just read the SB NAtion Article about the Griz and the 2009 Draft and remembered another underreported part of our curse.

If everyone remembers, we lost the coin toss that cost us the pick to the Bucks. The Bucks picked Jennings, we picked T-Will, and the rest is history.

I have always thought about 2 things in this scenario.

1. Of course we lost the coin toss. It just further validates how cursed we are as a franchise.
2. That is the year that Devin (in possible the last act of Glory for this team) hit the full court shot to beat the bulls. At the time that seemed lucky and things were looking bright. However, that shot also cost us Jennings.

I know we can’t play the what if game, but that stings. Also, we were very high on Lawson, teague, and Psycho T but at the last min choose T-Will.

by tategeorge on Jan 9, 2012 9:54 AM EST reply actions

I don’t really think Jennings is that great. But Lawson? Definitely

by mytoemytoe on Jan 9, 2012 9:59 AM EST up reply actions

Uh, what? Lawson in 33 minutes a game is putting up 16.6 ppg, 6.3 assists, 3 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and his three point shot has even been off this season so his numbers should be higher.

50% shooting from the field, that is SICK for a little guy like him. He is a very good player and I’d like to see you prove otherwise.

by mytoemytoe on Jan 9, 2012 10:05 AM EST up reply actions

By comparison Jennings is scoring 18 a game but on 40% shooting.

by mytoemytoe on Jan 9, 2012 10:11 AM EST up reply actions

Jennings is a bum, his head is not in it the right way, he trying to play out of his limits

I totally have to agree with Murse Mike and his thoughts about this season. 66 games in 122 days is absolutely brutal. There’s going to be a lot of things that make you scratch your head and a lot of exciting basketball.

This season’s playoff run is going to be a gauntlet. You’ll have more time to rest up your players but they are going to be exhausted coming off the regular season, hopefully not injured.

i think all fans tend to get a little overexcited about their young players

As a Knicks fan, people were constantly saying that Gallo was the next Dirk, and now everybody thinks that Shumpert is the next Wade/Westbrook. Its very rare to find a super star that low in the draft. Brooks is playing very well, but its very unlikely he will meet the unrealistic expectations people have for him. Howard might be the 2nd best player in the NBA right now.

by Dylan87 on Jan 9, 2012 10:38 AM EST up reply actions

Brooks reminds me more of Kevin Martin than anyone else

Has the potential to become an elite scorer in the NBA. He doesn’t have the all-around game that players like Kobe/Wade have though.

by Dylan87 on Jan 9, 2012 10:47 AM EST up reply actions

Very 1 dimensional. We can draft another scorer late in the draft easier then it is to get Dhoward.

"LeBron puts up great numbers, can't close w/o DWade. LeBricked 3 late 3s when shouldve been driving, getting to line. What else new?"

Yet casual basketball fans think he is a God, and would exhaust their entire squads to land him...

by Tim823 on Jan 9, 2012 11:16 AM EST up reply actions

Much easier

Dwight Howard is the clear #1 center in the entire NBA, and probably the best defensive player in the league. Its not easy to find elite scorers, but its much easier than finding a dominant C. The Nets should do whatever it takes to get Howard.

by Dylan87 on Jan 9, 2012 11:29 AM EST up reply actions

I don't think so.

He had a number of great passes that would have been assists if his teammates had made chippies. His improvement each year in college demonstrates that he continues to learn. I don’t think Brooks is a superstar, but I think he will have a long and effective career in this league. I’m not ready to give him up yet, unless Lopez is sticking around.

by BrooklynNets on Jan 9, 2012 11:48 AM EST up reply actions

Passing can be improved, but I dont know, I just dont see it. He misses a lot of passes in favor of the shot.

I dont remember what Kobe played like in his early career, other then when he air balled that shot in the playoffs.

Not that I know of, but their games are incredibly similar

I think MarShon passing is going to be good I've seen him have a couple of nice passes ruined because our bigs can't catch

Also MarShon will most likely bea mucht better defender than Martin added to that he’ll have a nice post up game. I agree he shouldn’t be compared to Kobe just yet ( don’t have a problem with him being compared to a young flawed Kobe before his prime tho) but I don’t think the Martin comparison is all that good

by nwkiddnj on Jan 9, 2012 11:48 AM EST up reply actions

I think Martin is a very underrated player

He averaged 24 points per game at one point, gets to the line at will, is a good 3-point shooter, and is able to get his shot off any time he wants. The biggest holes in his game are his defense and his passing, which is pretty much the same as Brooks. If Brooks turns out to be a better Kevin Martin, he will be the steal of the draft.

by Dylan87 on Jan 9, 2012 11:55 AM EST up reply actions

Not sure you have watched BRooks hard enough

HE has a better all around game than Martin, problem is players around him have been dropping passes and missing shots. Check out the indiana game on he marshon channel on youtube that pump fake and bounce pass to Petro as gorgeous but Petro could not finish.

Howard is going to walk anyway. The asking price for Howard will be lower than before the season. The Magic waited too long, they are losing all their leverage.

I say that the Magic will have to either pick between Brooks and Lopez and anything aside from Deron they want.

Right now, Bynum looks arguably better than Howard. If the Lakers offer him to Orlando, the Nets will have to give up pretty much anything Orlando asks for. Orlando isn’t trying to rebuild.

Well first of all

Bynum is not better than Howard by a LONG ways. Yes, right now Bynum is playing pretty well but to say he’s arguably better than Dwight Howard??

That’s like watching the first part of this season and saying Jeff Teague is a better PG than Deron Williams.

Second, you still haven’t addressed how the Magic are unloading their heavy contracts?

Not saying that Bynum is a better player than Howard

But right now he is arguably playing better than Howard. Thats how good he looks this year!

I don’t think the Magic do unload their contract, because they don’t want to rebuild. It seems like their plan is to add vets that allow them to be a competitive team right now. If that was their plan, they wouldn’t have signed Baby and J-Rich to multi-year deals.

No, it's not

Bynum is good, and possibly better than Lopez, but the gulf between the two is not very large.

The Nets can offer better picks, have more flexibility to bring in other teams and expand the deal. Lakers have what? Bynum or Gasol. Most likely just Gasol and a terrible pick or two.

by BrooklynNets on Jan 9, 2012 12:00 PM EST up reply actions

Only Nets fans think that Lopez vs. Bynum is a real debate

I agree the Nets can offer more, but not without giving up Brooks and picks along with Lopez.

by Dylan87 on Jan 9, 2012 12:03 PM EST up reply actions

Keep in mind that Bynum has played alongside all-world players

Kobe, Pau.

Seasoned pros like Odom, Fisher.

He’s also played under one of the best coaches in NBA history.

Ask yourself if Lopez would look better in that system.

by cdigs on Jan 9, 2012 12:07 PM EST up reply actions

Playing under Phil Jackson alongside star players has definitely helped his development

But it still doesn’t change the fact that Lopez has huge holes in his game, and right now Bynum doesn’t. The only real concern is his injury history.

by Dylan87 on Jan 9, 2012 12:18 PM EST up reply actions

Bynum still has holes

Brook has a consistent mid-range jumpshot and is very good at the FT line.

by cdigs on Jan 9, 2012 12:21 PM EST up reply actions

What holes do you see in his game?

Centers generally don’t have jump shots. Bynum, like a lot of centers, lives in the paint. I guess FT shooting, but he is a very similar player to Dwight Howard. Most teams would take a bad FT shooter with no jump shot, over a bad defender who is a weak rebounder. Not trying to sound like I’m hating on Lopez. But right now Bynum looks like a significantly better player.

Not this MOISO again...
Most teams would take a bad FT shooter with no jump shot, over a bad defender who is a weak rebounder.

Consider last season an anomaly with his bout with Mono, k?

If you do the research, symptoms of Mono can persist for 6-12mo.

Look at Brook’s stats from 2009-2010

*Blocks: * http://espn.go.com/nba/statistics/player/_/stat/blocks/year/2010/position/centers

He’s #7 ahead of: Noah, Duncan, Horford, Gasol

*Double Doubles: * http://espn.go.com/nba/statistics/player/_/stat/double-doubles/year/2010/position/centers

He’s #6

Steals: http://espn.go.com/nba/statistics/player/_/stat/steals/year/2010/position/centers

He’s #9

Assists: http://espn.go.com/nba/statistics/player/_/stat/assists/year/2010/position/centers

He’s #5

Rebounds: http://espn.go.com/nba/statistics/player/_/stat/free-throws/year/2010/position/centers

He’s #10

Scoring: http://espn.go.com/nba/statistics/player/_/stat/scoring-per-game/year/2010/position/centers

He’s #1

Brook Lopez has done more with less talent around him. He’s been the centerpiece of a terrible set of Nets teams and has produced above and beyond when he’s been healthy. The bout with Mono was really devastating career-wise. Published NIH studies show that many people who contract Mono still show symptoms of insomnia, fatigue, and muscle weakness 6 months later (number was above 50% from one study I recall).

Brook has been a freaking man about this and never blamed Mono, but it’s clear that his game suffered last year and we’ve all forgotten just how good he is.

by avilanets85 on Jan 9, 2012 1:08 PM EST up reply actions

Until this season I think it was a legitimate debate

And despite how good Bynum is playing now I don’t think it’s wise to compare his play to Howard’s. Howard dominates a team with his presence and affects the entire game. Bynum can be dominant, but the Lakers are still showing signs of slowing down with him in addition to Kobe, Gasol, and Metta World Peace.

If the Magic want the best player, fine. They can try to get Bynum. But they will be THE SAME TEAM WITH BYNUM INSTEAD OF HOWARD. They take any Nets package and they can rebuild with good pieces. That’s better in the end then two years of Bynum (and then having him walk too).

I think there is a lot of work to do

Amar’e has to adjust to playing with true C, which is something he isn’t used to. I think that our biggest concern though is the play of our guards. Shumpert has shown the ability to run the point in minimal playing time, which is a huge relief. But Fields and Douglas have done a horrible job adjusting to the slower paced offense. When Davis is healthy, I think we can be a top 3 team in the East, because of our frontline. But there is going to be a big adjustment period.

one thing to be clear about between Melodrama and Dwightmare

While there may be lots of similarities, the difference is that everyone and their mother knew we were throwing a bunch of assets to Denver and they used those “facts” to get the Knicks to strip their team. The Lakers so far have yet to truly offer Bynum and Gasol. I don’t know that Orlando will take Bynum plus minor to useless assets over whatever the Nets offer, nor do I think Orlando or the Nets even know at this point. With that said, I believe the Nets are in the drivers seat should D12 become available. IF the Lakers or Dallas come with a real offer that trumps the Nets, only then will we have to think about stripping our squad of most of it’s assets.

Depends on a multitude of variables.

1) Are the Magic willing to do Howard for Bynum straight up?
2) Do the Lakers have any interest in trading Bynum, even for Dwight? (Buss drafted him and has stuck behind him.)
3) If Lopez comes back and balls out, the Magic aren’t going to be able to say no to Brook Lopez and Marshon Brook, LEAVING OUT THE FIRST ROUND PICK.

I’m excited as the next Net fan about Brooks but if Lopez + Brooks get us Dwight Howard we do it as soon as we can. Keep the first round pick which will be 20-25 and build from there.

by mytoemytoe on Jan 9, 2012 10:30 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah...
If Lopez comes back and balls out, the Magic aren’t going to be able to say no to Brook Lopez and Marshon Brook, LEAVING OUT THE FIRST ROUND PICK.

I think they’ll still be some trepidation about that foot — the history of big-men with foot issues is expansive. On the other hand, they won’t really have an alternative. Hopefully, Lopez comes back and goes balls deep (meaning: he improved his outside shot a little).

by Dopeness on Jan 9, 2012 10:45 AM EST up reply actions

Lopez' foot injury is on the periphery, not the weight-bearing part of the foot

Therefore, his injury is not comparable to the career killers of people like Luke Walton and Yao, it’s comparable to Pau’s and Robin Lopez’, who never re-injured it.

And you can’t make a blanket statement like

the history of big-men with foot issues is expansive. On the other hand
when comparing Lopez to Bynum and not mention the ever larger list of athletes, 7 ft tall or not, that have knee issues.

I see OrangeEater’s point- Billy King is probably just going to offer the house. My point is that I think a good GM could get away with keeping the first round pick.

No way he doesn’t part with both Brooks and Lopez though. That’s the only way to convince Orlando that they are getting value at least somewhat close to Andrew Bynum and it is coming at a cheaper price tag.

What are the chances that BOTH Deron and Dwight leave together? Has to be almost zero.

Getting both this season is a must and the Nets know it..as does Orlando

by orangeeater on Jan 9, 2012 11:19 AM EST up reply actions

The compromise could be we don't take back Hedo

gives us flexibility… because 1 big 3 of Deron/Dwight/Hedo is a 3 seed at best in the East..can be as low as 6…

Bounce Howard from the game 9with foul trouble) and we have the same bad team we have now

by orangeeater on Jan 9, 2012 11:25 AM EST up reply actions

First of all we are not taking back Hedo's contract

that ship sailed when the Nets used up their cap space and from all indications the Magic are not interested in clearing their own cap. The Magic want talent and not draft picks and space to stay relevant in their new building. If they wanted the pick, they would have traded Howard before the season and been a terrible team.

Second, they’re not going to get the value they would have before the season. Billy was offering a King’s ransom to get the deal done fast. The Magic bet the farm that they could convince Howard to stay beyond this season. Now it is clear that is not going to happen and it has been made public that Howard has a strong desire to be in Brooklyn. The Magic have lost so much leverage.

This isn’t the Carmelo situation because there is no team to drive the price up like the Nets did with the Knicks. Sure the Lakers can give what “experts” believe to be the superior package, but they don’t seem very inclined to do so at this point.

Re: Bynum vs Lopez and a package

Bynum playing great is interesting. Bynum for Dwight straight up almost sounds fair. In general, in the NBA, the team getting the best player wins. Thus, Bynum trumps anything the Nets can trade.

The only wild card is the Draft pick factor. If our pick is a top 5 pick in this draft, Lopez, the pick, Marshon, and more may be sufficient,

Orlando played this perfectly. If they wanted to trade Howard, waiting until the deadline makes so much sense. It kills our season, so our pick will be good. Plus, they can get marShon

by orangeeater on Jan 9, 2012 11:12 AM EST reply actions

Bynum is the best chip available...

Questions are:

1) Does his 1-year contract discount his value?
2) Value of Brooks and Nets #1 pick.
3) Does Howard really want Nets exclusively or at least by enough to make Lakers balk?
4) If Howard and Deron are committed to playing together…not possible on the Lakers.

by rundmc00 on Jan 9, 2012 11:23 AM EST up reply actions

that assumes Otis cares about the contracts

He may not.. There was an article somewhere where Otis said it wasnt a necessity.

Swapping Bynum for Howard at this point doesn’t make Orlando MUCH worse.

And if we have a big 3 of Dwight/Hedo/Deron we will never win a thing. When Dwight is in foul trouble.. our offense is as anemic as the team right now (but likely without MarShon)… will be interesting to see if we take Hedo back. We would have no chance to beat Miami or Chicago with that big 3 and little to no youth or cap flexibility.

by orangeeater on Jan 9, 2012 11:29 AM EST up reply actions

Should have been my point number five...

Magic have no flexiblity with Bynum for Howard, which increases chance of Bynum leaving.

by rundmc00 on Jan 9, 2012 11:30 AM EST up reply actions

This is true

Bynum for Howard is a great deal for the Lakers, but not the Magic.

Lopez + Brooks + tons of cap relief + 2012 lottery pick… a pretty good coup. They may not win right away, but their fanbase will likely be highly energized with the potential of Brooks and whoever they get in the first round of the stacked 2012 draft.

It’s why I really hope beyond anything that we get Dwight as a FA.

Lopez on the Lakers would be just as good as Bynum, who is one of many people this season who are putting up inflated numbers, and who also has never seen a double team in his life.

Lopez was great without any team around him, imagine what he could do with several years of Kobe, Pau, Odom, and Artest around him… probably a lot more than Bynum, who wasn’t even with the team for half their playoff runs

by Murse Mike on Jan 9, 2012 12:36 PM EST up reply actions

yeah exactly some people are just so biased it’s ridiculous

by avilanets85 on Jan 9, 2012 12:37 PM EST up reply actions

Yup.

Take a look at Brooks 2009-2010 numbers before his bout with Mono:

http://espn.go.com/nba/statistics/player/_/stat/scoring-per-game/year/2010/position/centers

He was a top tier center for sure and on a team like the Lakers with Kobe, Pau, Odom, Fisher, and coached by Phil Jackson, he would have had numbers even better than Bynum. Lopez is flat out a more talented and skilled player. He’s not as physical as Bynum, but he makes up for it with a better offensive repertoire, better range, better passing, and better free throw shooting.

by cdigs on Jan 9, 2012 12:46 PM EST up reply actions

But doesn't that work the other way too

Lopez is our top scoring option but it is not the case with Bynum…

I believe Lopez is better and has a better upside than Bynum but just saying.

Nets are annoying... joking...

But seriously, if Nets want to have a chance, they better start Shelden, make JWill the first big off the bench and keep Petro warming the bench.

I’m done with this Shawnee experiment, he clearly is a bust and I can’t stand watching him on the floor, at least DJ can defend.

But he’s not making the shots he’s supposed to. Morrow wasn’t either but has since turned it around.

There’s time for Shawne.

In case you are not being sarcastic...

DWill has been playing with a different mentality since their first practice and it turned into a win against Toronto.

I’m confident they will pull things together real soon, they have the talent.

to make the playoffs...

*As you said, this is a injure plagued team, if healthy we can compete with any but 2 teams in the East, that being the Heat and Bulls.

*I have confidence DWill will get to that superstar level and he will keep us in the hunt for a playoff spot until Brook returns.

*Brooks, Morrow, Farmar, Stevenson, Humphries, Okur are all good pieces of a good squad.

*We are much better than last year, and we kept in the playoff hunt until the last two weeks of the season.

*Also, east is not that though.

Sarcastic, not really

I am kidding a bit, but I am serious in wanting to know if the team had a full practice because you could really tell the difference against the Raptors. BTW. I think we will see the real DWill soon, he just needs some time with this team. As I recall, he was a bit of a bust during his first couple of weeks in Turkey, then became a basketball demi-god.

I think any NBA superstar could have torn up Turkey.

In fact, I wonder if his stint over there has planted the seed in his head that he’s some kind of elite scorer.

I firmly believe he knows that he's not an elite scorer

but the team’s lack of talent and brook’s injury forces him to get away from his game and try to do more on the scoring end.

not in this situation

…nets need to show their short and long term plan is headed in the right direction. BK may think Brooklyn will sell itself, but I’m not buying it. Knicks needed to get Amare first before MSG became a destination and even then, they had to strip their team to get Melo.

So Nets need to have that winning environment in place before this season ends.

with Deron, Hump and Brooks playing

it will be at least watchable and competitive. Shelden Williams has been pulling his weight pretty well too. If Shawne starts hitting some shots, we might have a shot. Someone has to step up in addition to the usual suspects in order for us to win.

Kiss Okur Goodbye!

Once you have a bad back, you always have a bad back. He won’t play more than twenty games this season AND Djames’s injury is chronic too. I hope MarShon doesn’t re-injure himself. I’d rather he sit this one out too. Who is going to fill our need for a small forward?
I’m still available. Have Billy King just call me. (561) O-L-D F-A-T-G-U-Y

I have to disagree with you

You’re taking his back injury totally out of context. He had back spasms supposedly, meaning involuntary muscle spasms. Muscle injuries are relatively easy to correct. It all depends on the cause of the spasms though. A few seasons ago, Lebron also missed time due to back spasms b/c he had a growth spurt. Amare had a similar problem during the playoffs, and he’s back playing now too.

Degenerative problems with the back are the serious ones, like the one that Baron Davis has. And didn’t the Nets already announce that that he’ll be back (no pun intended) next week?
