King: Brooklyn's The "Attraction"

New Jersey Nets

As Mike Mazzeo of ESPN New York reports, Barclays Center is 60 percent complete. Steel is 97 percent fabricated and 95 percent erected. The roof deck is 65 percent in place, concrete on the metal deck is 97 percent in place and pre-cast seating is 80 percent done.

The facade fabrication does remain an issue, but everyone insists September 28 will be Opening Night. Billy King thinks that the arena itself is going to be a big deal in recruiting free agents. "I think you factor in the new building and being in Brooklyn, and now you’re in the biggest media market," Billy King told the Boston Herald. "I think it is an attraction."

Bottom line, says King. "There’s a lot of intrigue for us now."

Brooklyn will definitely attract better talent

The Brooklyn brand alone is an attractive aspect not to mention the endorsements, interviews, popularity generated, NYC atmosphere (which a lot of people outside of the tri-state area are intrigued by).

The weathered siding doesn’t mean anything. There are hundreds of companies that will jump all over the opportunity to fabricate the same exact thing no matter how unique they are.

About DH12 "Reconsidering his trade request out of ORL"

That reporter is a hack. Has reported wrong information time and time again, don’t believe it.

Until I hear it from the horse’s mouth(Dwight), I don’t believe he has rescinded his request. Also, unless Deron pulls a Dwight and requests a trade publicly, Billy King is NOT trading him, PERIOD.

But assuming that he does in the future, why would we help ORL get both DH12 and Dwill when that is OUR goal? Would not happen.

Also if ORL thinks anderson+reddick+nelson is a “good” package they are DELUSIONAL AND OUT OF THEIR MINDS.
Only way I deal with ORL if I HAVE to and there would HAVE to be other teams involved because their pieces are GARBAGE. I would rather send Dwill to OKC, Minny, Sacramento or some other place where they have LEGIT young talent and pieces.

We gave up Favors who looks like a stud this year, 3rd pick in 2011(Kanter) + our 2012 GSW top 7 protected pick + Harris for deron, if we trade him we need to recoup some of it back, AT LEAST ONE GOOD YOUNG PLAYER. Orlando does NOT have that. Harris is better than Nelson FFS… LOL

He wanted to go to the Knicks

Denver knew this and traded him to the Knicks. The Knicks took it because the Nets were in the conversation.

The Nets dont have to take the trade if Dwight is committed to signing here as a free agent.

Melo would have signed an extension with the Nets if he were traded to the Nets because he didn’t want to lose all that money from the old CBA.

Melo and Dwight are two completely different scenarios. While easily compared, they shouldn’t be. The only comparable part of the MeloDrama and Dwightmare is the media attention and unlimited rumor mill.

I’m enjoying the things some people post here. The optimism here is surely border line Homerism as well. I refuse to look on this “bright side” others see, and I also refuse to hope for something rather than actually seeing moves be made. To top that off, Nets turned a “Plan” into one hell of a gamble, that will make this team even worse than it already is if things don’t go according to the “Plan”. Brooklyn or Orlando?

Brooklyn all day. Orlando is a tourist city. The arena in Orlando is located in a residential area. The traffic is terrible. No public transportation. I counted 7 homeless people as I drove down 1 street. There are 3 small lounges right outside the arena and a pizza shot. Young people do not party in this part of Orlando. Its cool to go to the games because its the only sport in town and of course Dwight.
The Barclays arena and surounding area will be like Mardi Gras with Dwight and Deron winning. Bringing a championship to Brooklyn would incredible. The obvious choice is Brooklyn

Love rugby, I went to watch Ireland in 2007 world cup in France. Traveled with 4 mates all over France for 2 and a half months.

Then we went to the went to the 2011 world cup in New Zealand to watch Ireland but it just wasnt as much fun as going mental all over France and attempting to speak French, “continuea ett turny le gouche le taxi driver” haha

I think everyone read too much into Deron's expressions and body language.

Who likes to lose? Even if he’s on board with the big picture, he still wants to win a game or two. I’m sure he’s disappointed with his own performance and all the bad calls that went Miami’s way.

Can’t interview a guy right after a loss, that’s what you’re gonna get….on any team. Does that mean that anytime someone looks pissed and disgruntled after a loss they want to leave their team?

Everone needs to calm down onthat stuff. The only people on edge whether he is gonna want to leave or stay are the people on this board. I’m sure his teammates know what’s up.

We've never had a full discussion on this:

If we manage to sign Dwight straight-up in free agency and keep Lopez, Brook would play the 4. The main thing that’s been said is that he’d be terrible guarding opposing PFs, but my question is, isn’t that a risk worth taking? On the offensive end, Brook can easily play further out (and I believe he did in college).

The dream lineup: Williams-Brooks-Gilchrist-Lopez-Howard.

He and Dwight are like 2nd besties (besides Dwight and Deron). Also, J-Smoove has said he wants out, was almost traded before (draft night I believe) and Atlanta wants a legit Center to move Horford to PF, which both the Hawks and Horford want. Take this for what it's worth

a guy in a forum on the Magic official website is saying he exchanged DM with Dwight on twitter and he says Dwight told him Deron wouldn’t want to go there because he’s stuck on Proky and Dwight apparently downplayed the fact that Deron mention Texas & Florida’s taxes

http://truebluenation.com/forum/index.php?/topic/22673-the-official-dwight-howard-everything-thread/page__view__findpost__p__653436

on previous pages he also says Dwight wants SVG gone and that he feels the ownership organization is better here, and that Dwight would not extend in LA, he even says Lakers could rent him and he would still leave LA.

he apparently posted some pics of his DM with Dwight, but has since deleted them lol.

by Andres B on Jan 8, 2012 3:34 PM EST reply actions

That was an older list.

Since then he picked Nets #1 and has probably been told by DWill to say Nets only.

I don’t think DH would “screw” with LA after going there. He would tell them straight up that he wouldn’t re-sign, thereby keeping LA off the table.

by jerry25 on Jan 8, 2012 5:51 PM EST up reply actions

Here's the quote Andres B is talking about.
well yesterday he repeated that Deron wouldnt come because hes stuck on the owner there…that being said I feel Deron can change his mind and the fact that Williams brought up Texas and Florida in that article lets me know Deron is at least thinking about Dallas and Orlando. I sent Dwight that Deron state tax/market article and he just said “Derons just talking”. But i can ask him about playing in dallas

Forget Dwight get Love

Love is def worth the max and is younger than Dwight puts up similar #s. He and Lopez would be lethal offensively but defense would suffer.

Draft a stud sf and we have the makings of something big.

Deron could have 15asts per game.

by power_njerz on Jan 8, 2012 3:38 PM EST via mobile reply actions

How is he not worth the max when he puts up better #‘s than Dwight? He hasn’t been on a winning team, similar situation to Lopez.

You get a defensive minded sf and backup C to help cover up those shortcomings.

Lopez
Love
Anthony Davis Gilchrist Barnes
Brooks
Deron

That’s a winning team if the sf can ball.

Reality check

I know how much Billy King believes that building a new arena can land star players, but I find that to be more of wishfull thinking than reality. Does anyone really think that a new arena really helps in getting star players? Just about every team has a built a new arena recently, but many of them were unable to get such great players. In reality, it’s the money that get them to come, not what they will be playing. This isn’t the movie Field of Dreams where if you build it they will come, this is real life. Maybe King needs to stop watching that movie. As for getting a big market for Dwight, I really don’t think he needs to be in a high market city for this, and I did recently give a list of players who hardly played on any high market teams but were still known despite that, so I won’t repeat that again. The way i see it, if he was to really come to the Nets, it would be move or no move or in another way, new arena or no new arena, not only if it’s there. Then again, I guess Billy King is the king of wishfull thinking, which reminds me of an 80’s song I remembered hearing on the radio not that long ago. Please don’t grill me for saying this or consider me less of a fan for not being with the rest, because I am realist on such things like this. One other thing, there has never been any proof that new arenas make the current players do better either when it’s really just them doing better themselves, so such a claim is also a superstition in itself.

I think it's more of the cache of Brooklyn

to go along with a billion dollar arena. The name “Brooklyn” i think is the selling point. If you want to poke some holes in that be my guest

by SamsHops on Jan 8, 2012 5:11 PM EST up reply actions

Why I take such a view

The reason I tend to be a realist is because I tend to look at what really happens. Until the Nets actually get Dwight Howard, everything said is nothing more that just wishfull thinking. As a nerdy leftist, I use no such thing. In reality, he will probably demand that they give him a number with a bunch of zeros following it, or he will just reject it. Star players have a history of putting themselves up for auction to go to the highest bidder. He could very well just be only acting as if he wants to leave just to get more money where he is, like A-Rod did with the Yankees back in 2007 when he told them if he wasn’t getting this, he would sign with the Red Sox. Again, I highly doubt that a state of the art arena will play any role in getting him. Just hearing that statement from King is really stretching it. I know many of you will shout how pessimistic I am for saying this, but I am actually being realistic. Just because he said he likes the arena doesn’t mean that he is comming either. I can still remember when Michael Jordan said how much he loves MSG, but never played any game in a Knicks uniform despite that. Either way, you could hear many things of what this can do, but until it actually happens, it’s nothing more than wishfull thinking. Let’s say for the fun of it the Nets do get Howard. I still don’t think that changes anything, and having the best team money can buy and a brand new arena isn’t a guarantee for anything. Right now, the Knicks are playing their first full season with Mello and they are in bad shape, which shows having a star player doesn’t mean everything. To quote famous boxer Mike Tyson, “That’s just ludicrous.” If the team continues to play the way they do now after going to Brooklyn, they will be no different there as they are here. In the end, it was never the location, it was how the team played, and I am tired of always hearing all this anti-NJ bias when that had nothing to do with the team. The move was never about the team, it was about a realtor just looking for more land and needed something to please certain politicians to get it. For the record, I have asked many other fans at the Nets games I have went to after the move was brought up, and many of them had agreed with me that the move was a kick in the teeth for them, and many of them felt snubbed from that as well, so I am not lying about that here.

by Tal Barzilai on Jan 8, 2012 6:42 PM EST up reply actions

I am still a fan for now

However, I will probably leave them once they put on the Brooklyn uniforms like many others. Still, moving them to Brooklyn won’t make the team do better instantly. Did the Lakers win an NBA championship on their first season as an LA franchise, or did they end up losing to the Celtics again? As long as a team plays the same way they always do, nothing changes no matter where they are. To make a good fighter, it isn’t the weapons themselves, it’s how they are used. Let me go in depth about the move for a minute. What if I told you that the new arena was brought in by the abuse of eminent domain, corporate welfare, shady deals, or even violating a number of construction laws, which have all been proven in the past? Would you support it then, or just try to use the claim that the end will justify the means just as long as you get what you want in the end? If it was really about team, then why didn’t Ratner try to keep the players he was using as poster children for it such as JKidd, VC, RJ, or even Kristic and rather let them go? In reality, they were nothing but his pawns and he doesn’t give two seconds about the team, he just wants more land, but he needed a sports team as his Trojan Horse to get his way. What really angers me are those who keep shouting that I am anti-developement or against others getting jobs just for opposing when I have shown countless times that I am not, and same goes for certain people who been against it. What I really hate is cronyism, which is what was used to get this. I find it bogus to use a claim that this website is proof alone for support when fan sites have a history of being biased. I can easily find a fan site that opposes this, but you don’t using them. One major thing is that the Knicks have a very strong fan base throughout the city, and I highly doubt that any will just convert the minute the Nets come. Does anyone really think that most fans are bandwagoners? As for Howard, I still don’t think he is comming no matter how many claims I have heard, because until he actually comes, I will think he just pulling your leg.

by M I K E on Jan 8, 2012 7:18 PM EST up reply actions

Putting it simply

Mike, I have never seen new arenas as a way to get star players. I highly doubt if any come it will only because of that new arena. It’s just when I read that statement by King, I didn’t want to know what he was smoking when he said that. All I know is that when a team gets a good player, it’s really because of the money, not where they play. He could be playing in Antartica just as long as he is getting an offer he can’t refuse. The point is that gossip or other rumors are not an form of indication that he is comming here. Come to think of it, I don’t even think any other team used their arena just to get players. When was the last time someone wanted to play for the Knicks, Celtics, or Lakers just because of their arenas? The answer is probably never. I will only believe it when I see it. Let’s not forget that there were rumors flying that either Lebron or Mello was comming here, and that didn’t happen, so I don’t want anyone to get so hyped about something that may never be. Even if he says it now, he could say something different later, and there are many that are like that. If I end up being right, I don’t want to hear anyone going stark raving mad in the end. To make a little bet on this, if he doesn’t come, everyone has to see Battle for Brooklyn whether they like it or not as part of my victory.

by mfein28 on Jan 8, 2012 4:45 PM EST up reply actions

ya I was thinking that could be a possibility

J-Smoove? He and Dwight are really close friends, and he could fill the PF spot and basically give us the best interior D ever. Hawks would do it because J-Smoove said he wanted out and I think was almost traded on draft night. Also, both the Hawks and Horford want a legit center so Horford can become the PF. Brook would be perfect for them. If we need to trade Brook I say that makes the most sense but I <3 Brook

Watching the NJN-IND game from 2002 (2 OT)

Wow – that team had heart. I was at that game and hadn’t seen it since that GLORIOUS day. Kidd and Kmart NEVER gave up. Just a quick comparison:

Roster: 2001-2002

Jason Kidd, Anthony Johnson
Kerry Kittles, Lucious Harris, Brandon Armstrong
Keith Van Horn, Richard Jefferson
Kenyon Martin, Brian Scalabrine, Donny Marshall
Todd MacCulloch, Aaron Williams, Jason Collins

Now, I hate to say it, but I’m not 100% sure Deron Williams has something even remotely close of the heart Jason Kidd has, and that’s what made the difference for that team, as we all know.

With that said, I’m going to venture to say there’s now ay the Magic are dumb enough to let Dwight go for nothing. He will be dealt at the trade deadline, in my opinion.

So: assuming there’s a 3 or 4way deal like we’ve heard, Nets could look something like this:

Deron Williams, Chris Duhon, Sundiata Gains
MarShon Brooks, Anthony Morrow
Hedo Turkoglu, DeShawn Stevenson, Shawne Williams
Kris Humphries, Shelden Williams
Dwight Howard, Johan Petro

Now that is not bad. And realistic. And Dwight + Kris is not so far off / probably better than Martin & MacCulloch.

Really hoping that happens. BUT IF NOT — We gotta get SOMEONE ELSE preferably an All-Star level SF.

D-WIll + D12 = NETS 2012 Champs (with lots of luck)

Not necessarily !!!

It all depends what Otis and BK know regarding D12’s request.

If d12 has made it clear it’s Nets or nothing, Otis will just take the best package that is not embarrassing from BK.

You may remember (as reported) that Otis was on board with a trade just to hear the mgmt nixed it.

BK will probably have the same offer there (not with Marshon), especially if he knows the above assumption.

by d2d on Jan 8, 2012 5:28 PM EST up reply actions

It is if Dwight wants to play with Deron in Brooklyn

Plus Bynum has chronic knee problems. His knee(s) will never be 100% ever again. Knee injuries in this sport take a good 5 years off your career. I’d be shocked if he was ever able to play a full season while starting. All the NBA brains in this league know this…. I’m sure Orlando does too.

by breaking20 on Jan 8, 2012 5:35 PM EST up reply actions

I said it depends on D12's demand!!!

There are so many things that can happen, but if D12’s demands the NETS, we will give a package enough to grant D12 the extra guaranteed 5th yr.

We will not, however, throw a kitchen sink for him. It’s slightly different from Melo situation.

but I’m assuming it wouldn’t be a straight up 1-for-1 trade. Depending on who else the Lakers might have to give up I don’t think it would make much sense. Maynor is out for the seaons. Maybe they could use farmar

If they take Petro they could have farmar. Something like Petro and Farmar for Cole Aldridge and Royal Ivey and Dequan Cook.

Helps us shed salary and at least Aldridge can’t be worse than Petro. Only rotation player Thunder lose is cook and they gain a solid backup in Farmar.

Wow now I finally see why you guys think so little of Bleacher Report

So one of the top NBA articles is about Dwight reportedly re-thinking his trade request. One of the comments of how there was no way the Magic could trade for D-Will sparked this response….
Ryan Anderson has definately increased his value this year. Redick looks real good too off the bench. Possible for a package of Nelson, Anderson, and Redick for him. That would work for Jersey because they are getting good talent for him. Good for Orlando because they get a solid PG. It just leaves the magics core a little weak. Starting line up… Howard, Davis, Richardson, Turk, and Williams.
