Tables Turning in Orlando?

Nets officials remain quietly confident that they will wind up with Dwight Howard, either in a trade or free agency and, despite the ugliness of this season, will be able to turn the Nets into a superteam by the time they arrive in Brooklyn 10 months from now.

But Magic officials are still hopeful they can change Howard's mind and get him to stay and add pieces around him. WKMG in Orlando, in fact, reported Saturday night that Howard "may be rethinking his trade request" and "has been heavily recruiting New Jersey Nets point guard Deron Williams to play with him in Orlando". Furthermore, the station's sports director David Pingalore reports "the Magic are trying to trade for Williams".

No other media in Orlando, New Jersey or elsewhere has confirmed the report.

These delusional ORL hacks just want some attention

Don’t give it to them. This is the same buffoon who said Dwight had agree to an extension with the Magic prior to the lockout.

just because news isn't pro-Nets does;t mean it isn't true

You don’t think Orlando is trying to get Deron? Of course they are. Don’t think we would trade him.. but surely they are trying.

Is Dwight changing his mind? If “he wants to win”.. better chance there than here, at least so far.

just because it is anti-Nets it doesn't mean it's true

see how easy it is?

again, this is the same clown that reported Dwight was going to extend in ORL.

When someone credible backs this up I’ll start to worry. Anyway there’s zero chance ORL gets DWill.

by Andres B on Jan 8, 2012 9:21 AM EST up reply actions

you're giving this clown the benefit of the doubt?

some of you accuse people of only believing what is pro Nets, well some of you guys here are giving the benefit of the doubt to a moron who recently was flat out wrong on Dwight extending. I’m sure most people here hadn’t even heard about this moron in their whole lives. If this was a credible national writer reporting this I would believe it.

If "he wants to win".. better chance there than here, at least so far.

I don’t see that. New Jersey or Orlando with Dwight Howard is a middle of the pack at best in the east, at least for this season. Long term the Nets will have more flexibility to put a title contender on the floor. But this is just some local radio buffoon, don’t listen to what he is saying regardless of content.

That being said, there is a campaign by the Magic to portray Howard as waffling on his future. The Magic know their big man and that he is prone to changing his mind. I think their strategy is to hold onto him and promote a narrative within the media where it is possible Dwight stays. I say they hold onto Howard, get eliminated in the first round again, and he walks. To where? I don’t know. Could be New Jersey, could be Dallas. He dislikes the direction of the franchise in Orlando and the front office implementing the plans. In the end that’s why he is going to leave.

by BrooklynNets on Jan 8, 2012 9:32 AM EST up reply actions

That's the whole point

With Deron and Dwight in Brooklyn with a ton of cap space and limited long-term commitments, they can put a title contender on the floor where as the Magic would still be cap crippled.

by ZR on Jan 8, 2012 12:56 PM EST up reply actions

That may be true but it's an absurd notion

There’s no chance the Nets do that. NO chance.

by ZR on Jan 8, 2012 12:56 PM EST up reply actions

What do the Magic have to offer us for Deron Williams?

What cap space do the Magic have available next season? What is the market in Orlando for endorsements?

This is just hype news and spin by the Magic front office. The Magic are up shit’s creek. MarShon Brooks is already better right now than Jason Richardson. Jason Richardson is 30 with 4 years left on his contract. Turkgolu is past 30. Jameer Nelson is 30. Ryan Anderson is nice (thank Rod Thorn), but the Magic are not capable of signing Howard. They don’t have pieces to trade for Deron Williams. Nobody wants their scraps and awful contracts.

What about the job Otis Smith has done, makes you think that this is a real story, and not just some small market fanboy hype?

by DocJ on Jan 8, 2012 5:36 PM EST up reply actions

rumors are rumors.. most aren't credible

but at the same time, we have no idea what Howard is thinking. Killa, who has disappeared, used to point out that Dwight is fickle.. which he is. So maybe he did change his tune. Maybe the Nets stinking is God’s message to him, or something like that…

by orangeeater on Jan 8, 2012 9:18 AM EST up reply actions

exactly

i find it hilarious how we’re supposed to believe that Howard is just totally oblivious to how BAD this team is, and how MISERABLE Deron looks out there on the court.

Watching this team humiliate themselves on a nightly basis would make me reconsider my trade demands as well.

to tell the Nets to go ahead, do this, do that, I’m on board yatta yatta because he CAN LEAVE and not look back!

do you know how easy it is to do what he’s doing right now? He has an OUT! He’s not married to us! He’s not locked in with us! He can say whatever and if it doesn’t work, I’m gone! This is what frustrates me the most Andres, is that he’s saying all of this while not being tied to any of it. He could have just as easily told the Nets to sign Nene and Butler and then hauled ass right after. You guys trust him way too much

You're a terrible fan...

Seriously go root for the Knicks. You are 100% negative, all the time. Look we have a strategy. It may work, it may not. But you don’t change strategies mid way through the process.

We have a shot at two elite players at the two most important positions on the floor. Even if we don’t get them, we still have cap-space, flexibility, and two first round draft picks this year.

Just chill out! Deron hasn’t left, or asked to leave. He has only said he’s 90% coming back. Maybe he changes his mind, maybe he doesn’t. But fake ass fans like you, aren’t helping.

Nobody likes losing. We’re trying to change our fortunes into not just contenders, but champions. We’re trying to take over New York, and be the NY basketball team. Do you see how big this picture is? Do you really think Favors is the guy that was going to do this?

This was a gamble worth taking. If you’re not on board, go root for the Knicks. Stop being negative at every turn. It’s poison.

No, the prevailing mentality is...

Believe anything that makes sense, and deny anything that doesn’t.
\We’re not trading D-Will. We’re all in. He’s either going to re-up with us or he isn’t. The Magic, may trade Dwight, but D-Will isn’t going to Orlando. They don’t have cap space. They don’t have trade assets. This is why Dwight wants out. If they can pull off a Gasol for Kwame Brown trade, good for them. But short of that….they’re done.

The reports about Dwight coming here, are from him and his agent. The reports about him staying are from sources with knowledge of Dwights thinking. What’s more credible. His agent getting 15% of his contract, and the new one Adidas is getting ready to drop when he goes to a big market? Or his HS Gym teacher?

you should distinguish among sources

Pingalore might be right, but 1) his track record as Andres B notes is not very good and 2) other, more credible sources, are saying the exact opposite.

And Nets officials are VERY confident. I have no idea of the details that led them to that conclusion (and I’m skeptical that this will work out) but even this morning, i am hearing the same thing I’ve heard for weeks.

"It's as sweet as it ever was, I'll tell you. Now, hopefully, we started something and we can win some more championships, but we're going to enjoy this one right now. Have a little champagne." --Julius Erving, May 12, 1976, ABA champion Nets locker room.

by ZR on Jan 8, 2012 12:59 PM EST up reply actions

This just isn't logical...

Look, the reports that Dwight is coming here, are not all true. But, to say we’re top 3 is absolutely true. Dwight said he requested to be traded here. He said that! He has yet to deny that he wants to move this team to Brooklyn! Deron said he is re-signing 90%! He has yet to deny that, or flip on that.

Why get in a tizzy over anything else. There are a lot of report from people with knowledge of so-so tendencies, or a source with knowledge of so and so’s thinking….It’s all BS! The two reports that are factual to me, are what Deron said directly, and what Dwight and his agent have said directly. Everything else is rubbish.

This report is totally ridiculous. The Magic DO NOT HAVE CAP SPACE FOR D-WILL in Free Agency. Period. They are bloated with awful contracts. The Magic DO NOT HAVE TRADE ASSETS that the Nets would find desirable in exchange for D-Will. Why would we take anything on their roster, when we could put Bynum or Gasol next to Lopez, and add some draft picks? Do you not think the Lakers, would consider such a trade? What about Golden State? What about Inidianapolis?

This report is garbage not because it’s anti-Nets. It’s garbage because on no level does it have anything in it that anyone could look at and think, I see how this could play out and actually happen.

As bad as this team looks

I think we are forgetting that this seasons W/L record will have virtually no bearing on where Dwight and Dwill land. This team sucks right now and everyone knows that.

But NBA players today can see the bigger picture. Miami stunk up the joint for a few bad years. This didn’t deter Lebron and Bosh from going to Miami with Wade.

If Orlando had some flexibility and/or cap space and talented youth, I’d say yea this rumor could make sense. And yes, they may be TRYING to get get Deron, but there is zero chance they can land him via trade and zero cap room for him to sign in the off-season.

Not saying Dwight will be a net, but I think we can all reasonably conclude deron Williams will not be wearing an Orlando magic uni.

2005 – win title

2006 – 44 wins, 4 seed, swept in first round

2007 – 17 wins, worst record, 2nd pick

2008 – 43 wins, 4th seed, lost first round in 7 games, Wade was PPG leader

2009 – 47 wins, 4th seed, lost in first round to Celtics in 5 despite Wade averaging 33 6 and 7

I wish the Nets could “stink” like that. The Heat were obviously tanking after the end of the 2007 season but they still showed they were capable of getting out of the murkiest waters with relative ease.

With the nets, you cant even tell since 2005 when this team is actually trying to assemble a contending team and had Toronto not been so desperate to rid themselves of VC the Nets would be the Hornets of the North

The Nets have been utterly inept and laughably abysmal for most of their 35 years in this state.

What do you guys expect?

The Clippers were being dumped on for ages and now they’re suddenly receiving positive press

if the Nets stop losing, and running around like desperate fools, they will garner more respect. Until then, the media has a right to “hate” us.

except this time, there will be no Utah trade to bail us out at the end of the tunnel, and the stakes are that much higher, cause the guy we gave up so much to get, may walk!!!!

I have 0 confidence that dwight will come here……the losing, our grumpy point guard and other factors are not going to help entice anyone to come here….especially a center on a 1st place team with title aspirations. As far as im concerned things couldnt look any more bleak heading into brooklyn. The Nets organization may very well, lose out in the howard sweepstakes, lose dwill, have the worst record and not the best draftpick AGAIN, alienated their entire NJ fanbase by not caring and not at least attempting to put a competitive product ont he floor, and not entice any new or on the fence fans to root for them when they make their move….people will fill up the arena regardless in year one, shearly for the new digs and because all new arenas sell out in year 1, but beyond that it wont continue!

I honestly didnt even feel this broken up about this team even in the 12-70 year….

You're right this is Carmelo all over again

except for the fact that the Nets to Howard is the Knicks to Melo. He WANTS to be a New Jersey/Brooklyn Net. Do you not believe that he realizes the Nets are comprised of expiring role players, and are inevitably going to play awfully without starter quality talent? Do you also believe that despite what he says to reporters, he isn’t talking to Dwight about what is going on?

The Nets have this plan mapped out. They realize what has to be done, and they have shown they are willing to do it. Evidently D-Will is going to be grumpy, he has to play the role he has never played in his career. He’s not used to being the top scorer on most nights for his team.

i believe everything

however there is a human nature element attached to this whole thing…..and humans by nature live by the perception=reality staple…..the perception is that losing is a stigma attached to the word nets….whether its the brooklyn nets or the nj nets, losing is attached to them…..all the press about the nets is negative press, and as a human being dwight howard notices these things. I sincerely hope that i am wrong as i would love to for once walk into my teams home arena and feel like wow, im going to see a great product tonight, however i dont feel confident……ive seen this type of situation unfold too many times in the last few years.

I see your point very clearly, but this situation is unlike the past couple years. Because for the first time in distant memory

-The Nets have a star player that other players would love to play with

-Barclays is actually being constructed and although I haven’t personally seen it, it is apparently a beauty.

-Nets have an owner that understands the game, doesn’t know where his yacht is, rides in G5’s, jet skis, has billions, and bids for a temple.

And a small side note, the man wants to come here. He wants to be a Net.

I want Dwight as bad as any of us but if this guy really does all of a sudden want to stay in Orlando, he should just change his name to Dwight Coward.

Williams is our building block but D Will is a D Bag. His attitude makes it difficult to like him even when he himself is a major cause for our offensive woes.

Worst case we don’t get Coward or keep D Bag and we mourn. But in the end we will at least have Lopez, Brooks and a lottery pick to build around and I am ok with that as a worse case scenario.

Dwight really really wants to play with DWill

Tthey’re just reporting or ‘rumoring’ that Orlando is trying to get DWill because that’s the guy Howard wants to play with. Dwight says he wants to play with Deron, who’s a Net and they can’t get via trade with what they have, and Orlando just keeps re-interpreting that that they’re trying to trade for Deron.

Hopeless pessimists can just stay miserable. The broken record routine is becoming amusing actually.

by stenpoint on Jan 8, 2012 9:55 AM EST reply actions

Deron would have to tell Billy King to his face, at lunch, that he wants a trade.

I doubt that will ever happen because Deron has been Asst. GM of the Nets and this is HIS team team.
He has to take responsibility for the good and the bad of this team.

The best scenario still is that Howard stays with Orlando for the season

That means he doesn’t get traded to LA at the deadline and we still get a shot at him in the offseason.

Leave Orlando with their delusion that Howard isn’t bolting. That would be good — no, great! — for us in the offseason as we can go for him and also keep all our assets.

Of course this story is false, how the heck can the magic retain Howard with a new contract and sign Dwill?

They have hardly no cap and I believe it can’t happen. If people think Dwight wants to stay, you need to check your brain out, why does he want to stay because his team is going to beat on the bad teams and lose to good teams. This guy isn’t dumb he knows what type of situation he’s in, the magic dont have a team to beat the bulls, heat, Knicks. The guy wants a ring not a eastern conference finals appearance, and to Get to the finals he needs to get thru those teams which he wont.

what a depleted Nets team does matter, nevermind the fact that half those guys aren’t even under contract once Deron (and Dwight) have to decide whether to sign with us or not. Nevermind the fact that several of the few good players we have have missed games due to injuries.

Yet Dallas, a team supposed to be good, losing games and getting embarrassed does no matter when attracting free agents.

Just find it funny.

1) Same guy who reported Dwight would extend (that was obviously very wrong)

3) Does not quote if the source is a league source or someone friendly with Dwight
4) This is exactly what Magic fans wanted to hear, someone would give it to them sooner or later
5) As of now, the trade request still stands

Dwight Howard has requested a trade to the Nets. No one has requested a trade to the Magic.

That guy Pingalore...

is a local TV sports reporter down in Orlando…who I believe is very cozy with Orlando management.

Read this and tell me who you think Pingalore’s sources are…

ORLANDO, Fla. – Dec. 14, 2011
Local 6 Sports Director David Pingalore has learned through two sources that Dwight Howard’s California-based agent, Dan Fegan, was at Amway Center Tuesday trying to get his client out of Orlando immediately.

The two sources do confirm that Howard wants out of Orlando — and staying is not an option. Sources do confirm his agent continues to make that point each time he talks with Magic General Manager Otis Smith.

Pingalore also learned that Howard’s flip-flopping of possibly staying with the Magic is a ploy to steer the criticism off of the All-Star center. The sources say Howard is growing tired of not yet being traded.

Pingalore’s sources used the term that Fegan is “strong-arming” the Magic to make a trade, with Howard’s first choice being the New Jersey Nets.

On Wednesday, a trade rumor on ESPN.com was nothing but a decoy stirred up by Howard’s agent, according to Pingalore’s sources. They confirm the so-called multi-team trade that would send Howard to New Jersey, and also involving Portland’s Gerald Wallace coming to Orlando, was made up by Fegan.

The sources believe that Fegan is trying to create a buzz for his client, Howard, in order to pressure a trade.

A report tonight on Yahoo! and ESPN.com said the Magic told teams they will not field anymore calls about trading Howard.

However, Otis Smith said after practice,“We’re going to continue to talk to every team out there and that doesn’t mean anything is going to happen.” Pingalore’s sources say the Magic are not happy with Howard’s agent and that the Magic put out the leak about no more calls from teams. The sources described the Magic as digging “their heels in.”

The sources also confirm that Smith has at least 15 trade requests he is dealing with from NBA teams.

Howard did not speak to the media Tuesday, sources say, because of the direction he was under from Fegan not to do so.

On Wednesday Howard spoke to the media, but did not want to talk about the drama surrounding the team.

The Lakers continue to be an option for Howard, however Pingalore’s sources confirm that the Lakers’ center, Andrew Bynum, may not be as attractive, because the Magic have learned Bynum’s knees are not healthy.

I think the Knicks should go after him. I think he’s tough enough to handle the media, and that team needs structure. They also have an excellent front line that I think Sloan’s old school style could maximize.

2011-2012 season prediction: 22-44

And I'm fine with that. One of the original leaders of the "Dwight Howard, not Nono Hilario" movement.

I also think it’s a lock that they add Steve Nash as well.

Just think about it !!!

What do we have to lose. Are we getting any worse than this? NO!

That is why there is no way we trade D-Will. Proky took that risk, and DWill has more to lose if he walks than Proky. You better believe that.

I do not think DWill will leave 27 mill guaranteed, but let’s assume that he does that.

We will have plenty of capspace and a bunch of picks.

For those who say capspace means nothing, I say it means Gold in Brooklyn.

Just remember, Brooklyn is not Newark; it as thirsty for sports place as you can ever find.

Brook Lopez Changes Everything with our current Roster

Once Lopez returns our team will be a totally different animal. Most of the comments above that were negative basically talked about how bad the Nets are hence Williams not wanting to resign.

I’d like to see how many teams do without their stud centre for two months. Williams knows the score, he told King to keep the cap space, he was informed on every player aquired. He knows 75% of this roster won’t be here next season, so why exactly is there panic when a local homer magic writer posts a rumour?

I just don’t understand why people jump to massive conclusions without any evidence what so ever.

Like I said, once Lopez returns our team is instantly better with a post presence. Shooters like Morrow, S Williams, Stevenson and Brooks will get a lot more space on the floor with Lopez’s threat in the paint. It will also give Williams more breathing room and someone who can catch the ball under the basket.

Williams play will get better, assists will shoot up once Lopez returns. Everything is exactly the same as yesterday and the day before. We’re in a holding pattern for Howard, we kept our flexibility with the cap and are seeing it through until the 2012 free agency. Williams has told King to do this, so why are we losing the plot here?

We knew we’d be a bad team without Lopez. Williams knows were not good enough but it was his choice to get us to sign filler to tick us over.

Only Howard and Williams know what is happening.

On a side note Brooks is the reason I watch the Nets at the minute, love the kid.

Ill end on this note though, when Brook Lopez returns we will play to a playoff quality standard and shock quite a few teams with big wins. Lopez will beast it, so long as there is no further foot problems touch wood

Not much to offer

Other than D12, they have little talent in personnel under 30 (Nelson turns 30 in four weeks). Only Big Baby and Ryan Anderson have any value in persons under 30 and neither will light up the . Maybe Orton as a backup C. I don’t know how they pull off a trade that brings talent in.. They would have to ship Nelson, Anderson, and Idk what else to a third team for something of value. Slim pickings. Anyway, the agent(s) will determine what happens. GMs don’t hold a lot of cards when guys of this stature are involved.

Pingalore...

is a local TV sports reporter down in Orlando…who I believe is very cozy with Orlando management.

Pingalore’s sources used the term that Fegan is "strong-arming" the Magic to make a trade, with Howard’s first choice being the New Jersey Nets.

However, Otis Smith said after practice,"We’re going to continue to talk to every team out there and that doesn’t mean anything is going to happen." Pingalore’s sources say the Magic are not happy with Howard’s agent and that the Magic put out the leak about no more calls from teams. The sources described the Magic as digging "their heels in."

The Lakers continue to be an option for Howard, however Pingalore’s sources confirm that the Lakers’ center, Andrew Bynum, may not be as attractive, because the Magic have learned Bynum’s knees are not healthy.

no one really knows what is what

but put aside your pro-Nets tendencies and ask yourself: which seems more likely – that Howard would leave a community he seems to like, a decent team and a (state) tax-free paycheck to go to a new team that would be starting from scratch in a new city with only one good player or that DWILL would leave an organization he never wanted to join so that he could partner with the best Center in the world in a nice warm city with a solid fan base where he’d have some quality teammates and a (state) tax-free paycheck?

i (like all of us) have no idea what’s in DWILL or DH’s heart (or pocket book) but looking at the scenario, I see DWILL going to Orlando.

About DH12 "Reconsidering his trade request out of ORL"

That reporter is a hack. Has reported wrong information time and time again, don’t believe it.

Until I hear it from the horse’s mouth(Dwight), I don’t believe he has rescinded his request. Also, unless Deron pulls a Dwight and requests a trade publicly, Billy King is NOT trading him, PERIOD.

But assuming that he does in the future, why would we help ORL get both DH12 and Dwill when that is OUR goal? Would not happen.

Also if ORL thinks anderson+reddick+nelson is a "good" package they are DELUSIONAL AND OUT OF THEIR MINDS.
Only way I deal with ORL if I HAVE to and there would HAVE to be other teams involved because their pieces are GARBAGE. I would rather send Dwill to OKC, Minny, Sacramento or some other place where they have LEGIT young talent and pieces.

We gave up Favors who looks like a stud this year, 3rd pick in 2011(Kanter) + our 2012 GSW top 7 protected pick + Harris for deron, if we trade him we need to recoup some of it back, AT LEAST ONE GOOD YOUNG PLAYER. Orlando does NOT have that. Harris is better than Nelson FFS… LOL

Rondo would be a perfect compliment to Lopez and Brooks, and plays d and hustles all game. He also is a true team player.

Rondo is also a bargain for the amount he makes — imagine Marshon, Rondo and Lopez along with a top 5 pick in this great draft. Also, we would have alot of room for free agents.

not to long…..and I am a realistic Nets fan that doesnt see what all you people living in fantasy land see. Im a Nets fan till I die whether Dwill is here or not. It doesnt make me a bad fan because I dont like watching a grown man sulk on the court like a little girl. And no I wont be around here long because me not spending 6 hrs a night on Netsdaily doesnt make me less of a fan. I just feel bad for some of you people if things dont end up the way you want when this is all said and done. The way some of these people post its like they will fall into a deep depression if we dont have Dwight and Dwill. SMH

Know the facts

Not once did I say above that the Nets should trade DWill to the Magic. What I said was that the Nets should do whats best for them. If they know DWill doesnt want to stay wouldnt it be smarter to trade him to a team that offers a good package. No mater who that team is. You just heard what you wanted to hear.
