In Defense of D-Will...Really...

Lately I've been reading alot of D-will hate on these boards. I mean some really bad stuff. It would be funny if the posters weren't so serious. There was one poster who actually said he was no better than Devin Harris... Really people?

It was not even 2 years ago when this same D-will took a halfway decent Jazz team to the second round (losing his starting center and SF right before the playoffs) against the future champion Lakers. After that series he was talked about as arguablly the best PG in the NBA. A Year and half later, he hurts his wrist, gets into an argument with Jerry Sloan is later traded to the Nets and after 7 games this year he is now being downgraded to Devin Harris status...Really people?

Just last season in 12 games with the Nets, with a bad wrist, he avgs 13 asts and 15 pts. He even had a few memorable games in that short span. The London Game against Toronto with 17 asts. when he just embarassed Sonny Weems:

there was also that great game against the Knicks where he had 22 pts, 8 asts. and 8 reb. and i dont' think we can forget the minossota game where he had 18 pts and count them 22 asts! but of course after 7 games this season, now hes no better than Devin Harris...Really People?

Its been 7 games, time to step back from that ledge and really look at the bigger picture. Do you really believe Deron is all of a sudden a scrub? Do you realy believe that all of a sudden he is overrated? This team lost its leading scorer 3 days before the season began, they added 4 rotations guys less than a week before the first game and they had 2 rookies who also had to learn the offense in a very short training camp. Oh and lets not forget they had one of the roughest opening schedules of any team. This was going to be a rough first couple of weeks regardless. To make matters worse our second leading scorer (Ammo) was absoultely horrendous for the first 5 games, the new guys were just as bad, so Deron was forced to overcompensate, taking shots he normally wouldn't take trying to carry this team.

Some people were trying to compare him to TMac and other great scorers in the sense that if hes a top 10 player he should be able to carry this team no matter how bad it is. You can't compare the two thats like comparing apples and oranges. The PG position is different from all other positions because they lead the team not by scoring but by making thier teammates better by getting them the ball where they are at thier best. He'll get the 3 pt specialist the ball at his favorite spot on the floor, he will find the slasher at the right moment, he'll find the big guy right when hes next to the basket for an easy layup. Now what happens when your 3 pt specialist is missing all of his shots? When your slashers have stone hands? When your big guys can't catch? Then the PG trys to go beyond his game and score more points and sometimes when his shots are falling it will work but thats not his game so most of the time it won't. I'm a huge fan of Jason Kidd but come on people he would not be doing any better in this situation. He would pass it to Ammo who would miss the shot, he would look for james to slash but his stone hands would bungle it and Petro would miss Kids passes too. So Kidd too would be forced to shoot..and take it from someone who always had Kidd on his fantasy teams. Kidd would have put up worse shooting numbers than Deron is now.

One more thing for those complaining about his attitutde. Deron is a very competitive player so of course hes going to be upset when the Nets lose, or when they play badly. I'm willing to be bet that you put just about anybody in Derons place and they would be reacting the same way, hes frustrated the team is playing like crap, missing easy sots and dropping easy passes, you would be reacting the same way if it was happening to you. On the flip side hes critizing his own play as well, hes not just blaming the team. This is how competive players react that is how they function, and I don't mind him behaving like that because at least it shows that he cares enough to have an attitude...
Give it time...Dwill and the Nets are going to play better..really people ...they will.

what games are you watching?

the nets could have easily lost last night by 30 or more but he kept at it even with his bad shooting and wound up with 10 pts and 10 assists. oh and he played 39 minutes! if he quit like some people are saying theres no way he would have played that many minutes. he could have easily said something was sore and sat out the last quarter

LOL thats is not all that people are saying

go check out the thread after saturdays nights game, many fans yourself included were ready to tar and feather the guy…whos the one who decided to just call him #8? did he steal your lunch money or something? but of course i’m the one whos taking it to heart and is ready to blow a fuse…sure…lol
I’m just trying to let a few frustrated fans know that they need to have a little patience, Deron is proven leader and alll star there are reasons as i stated above that the team and Deron is looking so bad right now. but things will get better

I joke around alot and like 80% or more of the stuff I post is sarcasm

but I’ve lost all respect for that man, so he’s now known as #8 LOL. And is it actually false when people say he looks like Devin Harris out there? LOL. Most of it is funny, sarcastic, and just flat out jokes, but many here take there precious Nets to heart, like if we’re no all Nets fans here. And I’m glad you remember me bashing #8, because I’m sure your going to see a bunch more from me :-). Have A Nice Day.

in defense of the Dwill haters

he has been playing really bad this season…i still like him as a player…but he seriously needs to step his game up….consistency with this team starts with him…

I'd like to know what's going on with him, though

I agree he should still be considered a top PG and that dealing him now would be foolish. But he’s throwing away too many passes, finishing weakly too often— it’s almost like he’s out of shape or sick. And the brief switch to SG is mystifying, except that it takes less energy than PG. So I have to wonder.

Dwill is doing the best he can with limited assets

I would have a bad attitude too if I knife through the defense and leave the ball for Petro and Shelden Williams and they drop,it or get it blocked. Dwill is not a scorer never has been he needs a legitimate scorer. That’s why he had so much success with Lopez last year. Everyone needs to calm down hell right the ship

Watch the games

He is not showing heart out there.
Extremely careless passes almost every quarter.
Lack of hustle on defense (even though last 2 games that improved).
Showing up players and coaches with his obvious disgust with the squad when they dont perform – a real superstar does not do that.
Courtvision which is good but not top tier that i can see.
The few highlights i saw in Turkey he looked happier and more lively than this nets season.

All in all, i’m disappointed in his effort and play.
I expect better things when Lopez returns. If not, then he’s not the right guy to lead a team to the promised land.

Your whole OPINION can be debated, but I'm wasting my time on him anymore

I’m glad he played good in the past, but unless the past is going to help us this season, I can give a Moiso less. And his Jazz team was no where near decent or mediocre, they had a good team, and should have contended every year. Williams is being exploited right now for the player that he really is along with the leader he is. If other good players got bashed in the past for there play, there is no reason this one shouldn’t.

so 6 all star years is "OPINION' but 4 bad games (he had 2 great games and1 good game in there)

means he is not a leader and deserves to be bashed …what we are seeing is the “real” Deron. Wonderful Argument sir. by the way that “good” jazz team couldn’t even make the play offs without him….

LOL, Spare me guy

Because I’m losing my patience now and don’t feel like explaining why #8 isn’t a leader or a Franchise player. During the tough times, when a team struggles, you expect for there to be a bright spot, and that bright spot has been a Rookie, which many knew was going to be good. But this #8 guy? SMFH, that’s all.

I am so sorry that we weren't worthy of your "explanation"....

I just think its pretty ridiculous to give up on a proven all star and leader after 9 games (not all of which were bad) . A player who cares so little for his team that he is somehow avg. 37 minutes a game…Deron Williams (or #8 as you know him…) is not the problem with this team, he is part of the solution.

There's no doubt that Deron needs to play better and stop pouting

but let’s be real, he’s playing with utter garbage. Some people here actually said that Kidd’s teammates were no better than DWill’s. Really? Please, go watch clips of the old Nets. They were not stars, but they could play. They ran the Princeton offense pretty darn well, and were very solid and active defenders. They were for the most part savvy and nimble players.

DWill’s teammates? They play like their out of shape. Half of them can’t catch a freaking pass right in their hands. Half of them can’t dribble without turning it over or running straight into traffic. We have a bunch of one-dimensional players (spot up shooters) who can’t make WIDE open shots. They can’t play defense. And to top it off, they’re dumb as bricks as far as basketball is concerned. They make stupid fouls (AND 1’s), and they make so many mistakes in what should be a simple motion offense. Their body language shows it. They don’t know what they’re doing.

How can he show the best

If any teammates didn’t make a shot?
He did try his best, but other Nets guys were still horrible.

1 - D. Williams / J. Farmar / S. Gaines
2 - A. Morrow / M. Brooks
3 - D. Stevenson / S. Williams / D.James
4 - K. Humphries / S. Williams / J. Williams / D. Horner
5 - M. Okur / J. Petro / B. Lopez

I agree with this post..

For most of what we’ve seen this season, Deron is playing a role that doesn’t suit him. People are expecting him to be a wing superstar that can score on anyone (Melo, for example).

He’s a play maker. The problem is that many guys on this team aren’t able to complete his plays. Sure, Deron has caused some bad turnovers, but those bad turnovers aren’t even the difference of points we lose by (we get blown out).

Since he’s the only one in this team that can create his own shot, he tries to force the issue. Unfortunately, this is not his natural role (as I said earlier), AND he usually faces a double team or the opponent’s best defender.

Obviously he will have a tough time. When Lopez returns, and the team chemistry increases, Deron will return to his regular role, which is to make plays, hit open shots, and score on his man.

by wiz1732 on Jan 9, 2012 12:32 AM EST reply actions

SERIOUSLY

WHAT GAMES ARE YOU OTHER PEOPLE ARE WATCHING.

Deron is playing bad because his teammates can’t make a shot. Look at the stats, they’re shooting poorly. That’s why the other team’s defense are focusing and are collapsing on Deron.

Look at the current roster. Deron, Hump and Brooks are the only consistent source of offense. Morrow only played well during the last 2 games (although the Miami game is debatable). Until others step up and become a consistent threat, Deron’s numbers would go back to the All-star Deron from last year.

Once Lopez returns and Memo contributes his usual numbers, the opposing team’s defense would not only focus on DWill.
