James Returns To Lead Heat Over Nets As D-Will Says "Offense Sucks"

Just one of the Heat's big two returned from injury on Saturday, but that was enough for Miami to pick up a comfortable 101-90 victory over the Nets.

The Heat scored the first 10 points of the game and led by as many as 24 points early in the third quarter. A 19-5 run got the Nets to within 10 late in the third, but they couldn't get to within single digits until there was just two minutes left in the game. And the Heat were able to hold them off for the win.

The Nets shot under 40 percent for the seventh time in their nine games, made just 10 of their 33 3-point attempts, and turned the ball over 22 times. As Deron Williams said post-game, "Our offense sucks."

Kris Humphries tied a career high with 25 points, adding 12 rebounds. Deron Williams recorded a double-double, but shot just 4-for-16. Anthony Morrow and Marshon Brooks each finished in double-figures, while Shelden Williams grabbed 13 boards.

Dwyane Wade sat out, but LeBron James had 32 points (22 in the first quarter), seven rebounds and nine assists for the Heat.

It’s like he was trying to shoot himself out of a funk tonight. He was REALLY aggressive on the offensive end

by Genesis336 on Jan 7, 2012 10:10 PM EST up reply actions

and whats worse is that avery was dialing up plays for him in the first half

and then in the second half when he was like 6-17 farmar and others were force feeding him the ball with like 5 seconds on the shot clock

wish he could make free throws though, #8 too

took him a while to get going in Turkey

Even a scoring PG needs to know the team and have them know him. Always balancing threats of scoring vs pass.

Even the end of Morrow shooting drought is a significant good sign for DW. Right now he doesnt even know names of all players on team.

by PigDaddy3 on Jan 8, 2012 2:48 AM EST up reply actions

I think he is

but the fact that he’s forced to throw up so many shots because the Nets lack any go to scorer makes him seem like an okay player. Then when he misses a shot, he’s frustrated, the other team goes on a run, and then that leads to the other team winning the game.

outside of #8, who do they have?

He isn’t the type of player that can be your go to scorer. He is a pass first, and his play elevates when his teammates are capable of catching a basketball.

by JerseysFinest. on Jan 7, 2012 10:28 PM EST up reply actions

I don't care, he's a PG, he had so much hype about making others better

This is one reason why pass first PG’s are becoming rarer and rarer. Many star players lacked a good team, yet they still found a way to compete and contend for a playoff spot AND even make the playoffs.

1. Deron Wiliams decides which games and which possessions he ‘wants’ to express his immense talent. Terrible shame. And really beyond starting to P&$$ me off.

2. The NBA game is so emphatically rigged – they don’t even bother hiding or masking it anymore. It’s a Terrible Shame I still watch considering I’ve known this for over 20 years.

3. Shawne Williams should NOT be playing in the NBA – Outside of the Contract difference – it’s worse than watching Outlaw

Anybody who IS mad is allowing themselves to be over-reactionary.

The Nets have LITERALLY no front court scoring against an athletic team like the Heat. We desperately need Brook Lopez in a game like this.

D-Will is trying really hard and forcing his game. I don’t blame him because the only times the team plays well is when he is going all out all game, and how many times can you do that in a week without getting tired and sloppy?

he draws attention which helps hump out a lot and also helps out morrow/stevenson etc.

Deron Williams played like crap healthy too

he’s overrated. Elite PGs make players around them better. You can argue that Deron has hindered the performance of most of our young pieces.

Who is going to further the curse of this franchise.

by cosmic convict on Jan 7, 2012 10:45 PM EST up reply actions

I think you’re way over-exaggerating now. I was on board with you before but Deron is working with no front court offense. You can’t win games that way. They have to be a jump-shooting team.

by mytoemytoe on Jan 7, 2012 10:46 PM EST up reply actions

All I'm saying is this:

This whole lockout we’ve been talking about the star-power Williams is bringing, and the potential of getting in as a 7th or 8th even without Dwight. Even with Lopez in those games against the Knicks….Deron has played like trash. Guess what bro….he’s probably going to leave. This has gotten uglier than most people have expected, and when we leaves if we get nothing for him it’ll further curse this franchise. Deron Williams is playing like a below-average PG and I’m not making excuses for him anymore.

He means value

is dropping…he isn’t the same player that was playing with Utah last year. He’s maybe worth two firsts, but we aren’t going to get a solid young piece for him.

by cosmic convict on Jan 7, 2012 10:44 PM EST up reply actions

If you're saying he wasn't great with us last year, he definitely was, considering his health status.

And I COMPLETELY disagree with you that the highest bid for Deron would be two first-rounders if we were shopping him right now.

Not that it even matters. He’s our PG until at least March… and beyond that unless things go terribly wrong.

by OTRWaldo on Jan 7, 2012 10:49 PM EST up reply actions

There are a ton of PGs playing better than Deron

and if he keeps this up people are going to question whether his success was due to him or Sloan’s system. Sloan is gone and now Harris is playing horrible as well. Product of a system. He’s still good, but he isn’t elite right now. Plus he played in Turkey and was supposed to be ahead of the curve. People here blame everyone but Deron because they made a deal with the devil and fell in love with Sloan’s success.

by cosmic convict on Jan 7, 2012 10:53 PM EST up reply actions

One thing you could never say about Kidd

was that he wasn’t a hustler. Deron’s former team is playing better and you can say that Favors and Harris really haven’t done much for them yet. They’re doing better without him, a la Denver and Melo. cancer.

by cosmic convict on Jan 7, 2012 11:00 PM EST up reply actions

Dude...

are you completely ignoring everything post-trade last year? The Jazz were 9-17 last year, yet you’re judging how they’re playing without Deron THIS year. Deron was great for us with bad wrists last year, yet you’re judging how he’s played with a banged up, out of shape team this year.

He is a liability

with his hands and one of the reasons we cannot score….. Are you saying that DWill got 10 assists on a team that has brick hands in Williams and Petro, another Williams, in Shawne that cannot hit an open shot, and no one to play in the post???

DWill is one of the best points in the NBA and a Top 10 Player.

It is really not clear whether some of you are being sarcastic or you really are that ……..

I’ll refrain.

by NetProfit on Jan 7, 2012 10:59 PM EST up reply actions

What are you jumping on me for?

Shelden is unfairly being asked to get involve in the offense when in reality he is supposed to be the smart hustle guy who makes big plays as a substitute. He makes a lot of smart decisions and only is a liability when asked to play a big role on offense.

But he will function well in the post with Lopez, since he is so adept at tipping out offensive rebounds, and he plays very physical defense down low. When they are on the floor together I think they’ll be a good combo.

And I’ll refrain from tearing into you for generalizing my simple statement as “D-will sucks”.

Utah also helped by a lot of depth. They were able to play Okur who is a solid big man for us for just a second round pick out of charity.

In a long 66 game season, Utah, with it’s bounty of young players, are going to out-hustle a lot of other teams.

Gotta be honest

was at the game and although i dont think it woulda made a difference in the outcome, we get zero respect from the officials…..twice marshon got fouled and didnt get the call, one was on the fast break where lebron blocked him……dwill when he was called for an offensive foul and hit the bucket, there was no way in hell that was an offensive foul…..also at least 3 times hump was fouled hard on the way to the bucket and no call……

just sayin……

and all the stone hands on the roster forces hump to force 25 shots. that was a career high for him. not even when he was a chucker he attempted that many shots

So this is why i'm not worried, and you guys should relax for a minute

Did you know that in every single game the Nets have played, the opposing team has either had more or equal rest before the game than us? The two times we actually had more than a day between games, we won. Losing the biggest part of our offense hurts. Having no time to practice without him hurts worse. This brutal schedule hurts the worst. But you know what? Brook is going to be back in February, right as our schedule gets managable. Maybe he plays well enough that we trade for Dwight, maybe not, but we’re going to have a pretty good team once we get Lopez back. Until then, we’re going to steal some games here and there, but it’s not gonna be pretty. Just remember to think long term, I’m sure that’s what D-Will is doing.

Also, we get to stay home AND have a day off before our next game. I’m calling a win against Atlanta.

Considering our alternatives I’m very happy to have a player as smart as Shelden here in New Jersey. Humphries is decent but Petro is a walking zombie and Williams couldn’t be greener.

If Shelden didn’t have to play a big role I think everyone would appreciate a lot more what he brings to the table.

Why aren’t they mixing up the plays! That’s what I don’t get, what makes me shake my head. The other night they kept having Brooks slip through a screen. Tonight they didn’t even try it.

They were doing double screens with Humphries and Williams in Toronto and working them to perfection, tonight nothing.

Stick with what works, even against such a good defensive team like the Heat.

great quote

I honestly feel the same way.

I’m sure if Brook played for a franchise that wasn’t one of the worst teams in the league for his short career maybe he’d enjoy the NBA more

this is sad. I hope that MarShon doesn’t become jaded as well. This team is a talent killing mess

Brook

has probably checked out on the Nets.

This team has a)been abysmal since he’s been drafted b)his overall value has plummeted BECAUSE HE’S A NET c)the team has made no secret that he is trade fodder

Brook Lopez probably tells people in private that he can’t wait to get the hell out of here.

probably true

by MrDollarBills on Jan 8, 2012 12:58 AM EST up reply actions

this franchise is a joke

no talent worth their salt would be able to function here with the crap that goes on

this franchise has been a chaotic mess since Kidd was traded and nothing has changed

Kidd was right to force his way out of this clown outfit

by MrDollarBills on Jan 8, 2012 1:04 AM EST up reply actions

i dont blame you brook

favors felt the same way as soon as summer camp started

RA likely would have sulked too

No doubt T-will, CD-R, and Lee tried to force the teams hand into trading them anywhere.

i dont know who the nets are fooling with this 12-70 to superstar team mold. Deron is flip-flopping just as much as Dwight. lets be real, being a 45 win playoff 1st-2nd round also-ran would have been a huge improvement for this franchise had they just went and signed West, Crawford, and some other pieces

Brooks is the only player producing consistantly

I like what the kid is doing. Hump brings it every night also. DWill is not, did someone tell him hes Devin Harris? I wonder sometimes because he does not look anything like a top player in this league. I hope he wakes up. Farmar is a good bench player and i have no idea why Gaines was taking his minutes. I would feel much worse about our team if it werent for my Mets. We just need more time to acquire more talent, which i believe will happen sooner or later. We really miss Brook.

D-Will

has not even sniffed the level of play that we have seen from Kidd and Carter during their tenure.

That to me says it all.

Kidd came in here, immediate impact.

Carter came in here, immediate impact.

D-Will comes, he threatens to leave as soon as he gets here, feeds gullible Net fans lip service, and cries to the media every chance that he gets.

Other players make me upset but they all do something to help the team. Seriously I go to bed thinking why him. Never cared for this guy. He looked like some bum who hustled his way onto the Knicks roster last year. When I read all the praise about him coming here I said whateva just fill up the roster. Get Gilbert in here NOW. I’ll use my own money to buy Shawne out. I cringe when I see him on the court. MAKE IT STOP!!!

I was watching the Jazz game and Favors looks REALLY good.

Only 20 years old too. He looks so much more comfortable and confident now. He can shoot the 15 jumper, score inside, even hit a fadeaway boozer-like shot from the post. This guy is going to be 18/12 guy EASILY in 2 years when he is given the keys to the Jazz and Big Al/Milsap are out of the picture.

Kanter looked BAD BTW. Kid hustles a lot but just looks bad on the court IMO.

Nets were displayed as "Lose Like A Man" team underperforming at home.

Matt Winer was talking about how bad of a home team we are. Instead of piing on Mike just mentioned how all our starters have been out and haven’t played a full game together. (mentioned Lopez) Had C-Web,Greg Anthony, D. Aldrige been there we would have been clowned again.

You're a bad fan...

The season is 10% done. One 5 game win streak and we’re back in the playoff hunt. Do you think that might be possible when we get Brook Lopez back? Do you think that might be possible as MarShon Brooks matures as an NBA player?

How many teams in the league have had the injuries we have? This is the 2nd best team in the league we just lost to. We won the day before, in a rout. We were without two of our Centers, and Johan Petro played 4 minutes.

Kind of tough to win when the tallest guy on the floor is 6’9". P.S. that’s the same height as the other teams “small” forward.

Quit whining. The talent is obvious on this team. The reason for optimism is obvious. We have an elite PG. We have an elite big man who wants to come here, and a very good big man who will be ready to go in a little over a month.

Oh Yea, we have two first round picks in the most loaded draft class since Lebron James’.

Chill out. We’ve been bad for a long time. The end is near, and it’s easy to see.

by DocJ on Jan 8, 2012 5:03 PM EST up reply actions

Deron's struggles should not be a surprise

Teams aren’t going “we’re so scared of Johan Petro and Shelden Williams, we have to guard them”. There is a clear formula to beating the Nets: Get Deron. The only other guy you have to guard on this team is Marshon, that’s it. That’s not a difficult thing to do

by muwu on Jan 8, 2012 4:15 AM EST reply actions

Dwill is not a max contract player... So the Nets better think hard before giving him 20 million per year...

Dwill is a player who can only flourish with several good scorers around him. In Utah. he was surrounded by good scorers who could hit shots (Boozer, Okur, Milsap, AK, Al Jefferson, etc.). Dwill is a great distributor who is also a decent-good shooter.

Dwill does not warrant a max contract because he cannot carry a team. This doesn’t mean he is not a good player. He is a very good player. But he is not a max contract player.

by aug93 on Jan 8, 2012 7:22 AM EST reply actions

Even Kobe

had a 2nd round playoff team with Odom, Bynum after Shaq. It wasn’t until LA traded for Gasol (losing only Kwame Brown) did he go beyond that. Other similar examples as well. And the current Nets with all the injuries is arguably the least talented team overall in the league.

I wouldn’t draw such conclusions (yet) from this game against arguably the best team, or at worst top 2 team, in the league. Even if Wade wasn’t playing, they had 2 max players, both scorers, and all their role players. We were without our 2nd best player, and his supposed replacement, etc. The All-Star break seems a good point to really evaluate things.

He's worth a max but he needs to become a better leader

These guys ave to be ready to follow his command from the beginning and never be happy with moral victories. I like that Deron is so competitive but his body language lately has been just awful. As bad as his shooting.

That said, it’s hard to be a team ready to win when you know you are nothing but a trade chip and expiring contract. Not sure who is ready to fall on the sword for this team when your main purpose is a stop gap to Dwight Howard.

The Nets had better get Dwight, or this is going to be one hell of a decade.

great post.

I like that Deron is so competitive but his body language lately has been just awful. As bad as his shooting.

This is why I could care less about what he says in regards to the bigger picture. It’s hard to believe a guy who has bought in to this plan would have that kind of body language. It speaks volumes about what this guy is really thinking imo, especially yesterday where he looked like if he was given the chance to walk off of the court he would have done so gladly.

I think that the folks who believe he’d stay regardless of Dwight are kidding themselves. He’ll haul ass to Dallas to play with an aging Dirk before he sits through this garbage. I don’t blame him one bit.

That said, it’s hard to be a team ready to win when you know you are nothing but a trade chip and expiring contract. Not sure who is ready to fall on the sword for this team when your main purpose is a stop gap to Dwight Howard.

Exactly. This is what the Nets have been for three seasons now, a bunch of mercs, trade chips, and renegades, and we wonder why the product has been abysmal? The Nets make it no secret that everyone on the team is expendable, and then expect them to go out there and run through walls. That kind of strategy won’t work with employees making 7.25 an hr, and it won’t work with guys making thousands of dollars per game either.

And I wouldn’t be so confident about Brook Lopez staying here either. I’m not sure that this guy is happy with being apart of this nonsense. If Brook were on another team his value would probably be through the roof. Here, he is known as a loser that cannot rebound. He’s thrown on the trading block for Howard in public before the season begins, and to top it off Orlando puts it out there that they really aren’t interested in him…double whammy. He knows that he’s trade fodder, just like Favors knew he was. Food for thought.

by MrDollarBills on Jan 8, 2012 8:58 AM EST up reply actions

we'll see how "great" Deron and Billy's relationship is

when the losses continue to mount.

I bet those office talks will become far few in between sooner than later.

by MrDollarBills on Jan 8, 2012 9:00 AM EST up reply actions

Big Picture and Patience

Chill out and have faith in the plan! Talking this negativity is going to drive Deron out of town.

Point is, we have him. He likes being here. He’s 90% coming back. We have a talented young rookie who looks like a future all-star. We have a talented big man, in Brook Lopez, who looked in the pre-season ready to take the next step towards the elite in the East. Hump is a beast, and definitely a guy we can win with.

We have two first round draft picks in a loaded draft class. We have a legitimate shot at Dwight Howard.

This isn’t about being able to compete with the Heat undermanned. It’s about what we’re going to do over the next 5 years, and clearly there is a plan and an urgency to get better, and to do it the right way, instead of the desperate way.

Keep the Faith, baby!

Have you seen the roster we have?

No one can carry this team. Look at what happened to Kobe when his team was devoid of talent.

by muwu on Jan 8, 2012 8:07 AM EST up reply actions

he still threatened to leave for Chicago or the Clippers if they didnt fix it

luckily they brought Phil back and when they pulled off the gasol trade were able to carry that early season momentum to the finals

No Okur, NO LOPEZ! The Heat are without their 2nd best player and it’s mentioned. Us without ours isn’t? Plus Brooks playing on a sprained ankle….Nice biased reporting…fanboy.
