Williams And Humphries Will Play, Nets Concerned About James' Foot

Photo

The update from shootaround in Toronto on Friday is a mix of good and bad news. The good news is that Deron Williams (ribs) and Kris Humphries (shoulder) will play Friday night. The bad news is that the Nets are concerned about the status of Damion James' right foot. James will undergo an MRI on Saturday after the Nets return home.

The TBD news is that Marshon Brooks (ankle) is a game-time decision. If he can't play, Anthony Morrow will start at shooting guard. At small forward, DeShawn Stevenson will become the 10th different Net to start a game this season.

If we can win Today and at Miami I'm sure we can get back on the road to post season.

I was hoping we could maintain a -5 record till brook comes back and than mame a run.

Maybe no Wade and Lebron, but they still owned the hawks

Which means we will lose by 30

they didn't own the hawks

A bosh three kept them in the game, and the hawks would’ve won if Joe Johnson hit his shots late

It will be tough to beat them if they had

Wade and Lebron back in the lineup but we have a good shot at winning if they both sit out.

What's worse is that he's proven to be a below-replacement level player so far.

And his skillset doesn’t bode well for his future.

so that is good then.

we have a player who is below average that got hurt. A spot opens up for someone else to step up. I’m done with James.

by HabPSU on Jan 6, 2012 2:27 PM EST up reply actions

We certainly can't count on him going forward, imo.

No matter how long he’s on our team. He can’t seem to stay on the floor, so we can’t pencil him in as a rotation player in the long run, imo.

He's never projected as a start, more a rotation guy off the bench

He just has to start now. Remember, Kirilenko would be starting if not for Lopez being down.

Good point

Maybe if he played less minutes, he wouldn’t get injured so much. At least that would be our hope.

by BigTom on Jan 6, 2012 1:51 PM EST up reply actions

Eh

If he was any good, we’d find a place for him.

But not talented and injury prone? That’s a bad combination.

Oh pissing blimey there's jam coming out of the walls!

by TWilliAM on Jan 6, 2012 1:28 PM EST up reply actions

He has some talent as a role player

Plays good, physical, aggressive defense. He’s blocked a lot of jumpshots this year with both hands. He has terrible hands and handle but at least he attacks the basket and runs on transition. His energy is plus and he’s a well above average rebounder for his position. He has little offensive game right now but should become more adequate with some hard work. Positive presence and work ethic.

He’s just not a starter or a pure 3.

by BrooklynNets on Jan 6, 2012 1:56 PM EST up reply actions

His production has been awful.

He’s not particularly young for someone with so little experience, so you can’t project him to improve very much (if at all) and his defense isn’t good enough to make up for it. He’s not some kind of Tony Allen level defender.

He’s a guy who plays sparingly for winning teams. Though I can see his rebounding, competent defense and effort level keeping him in the league for a while.

Oh pissing blimey there's jam coming out of the walls!

by TWilliAM on Jan 6, 2012 2:05 PM EST up reply actions

Yes his production has been awful
He’s not particularly young for someone with so little experience, so you can’t project him to improve very much

He’s not too old to improve his jump shot, which is his biggest offensive weakness. And on a team with so little talent, he’s been a bright spot worth following. I know he will never be a great player, but he’s worth watching develop. I feel awful for him that he has had another setback.

by BrooklynNets on Jan 6, 2012 2:13 PM EST up reply actions

He's worth playing on this Nets team

Because there are so few others worth playing.

Fun Fact: James hasn’t made a three in his career.

He has very real and very obvious flaws

BUT, again, so do many of the lottery picks in this draft. I’m pretty happy with his performance so far.

He may not pass the ball as well as i’d like, but he doesn’t turn it over either. 6 TO in 163 minutes while handling the ball as often as he has is impressive. He needs to have better shot selection and do a better job on the defensive end, where he often gets lost on screens.

Al Harrington is still the same ungood player he was last year and the year before that etc… hot start be damned.

But the rest of the list? Pretty good.

It's funny the bias that the media shows to the Nets and their players.

1-Every media outlet acts like Brook Lopez is a scrub.

2-Its obvious Brooks is the best rookie so far this season but all you see is negative criticism about how he plays. It’s especially commical coming from John Hollinger since Brooks has one of the highest PER’s in the NBA. Ive always thought Hollingers stats were crap anyway but he sounds like a hater when he says negative things about Brooks and he is killing it as far Hollingers metrics are concerned

Rubio is a better rookie

So far. He’s a wizard on the floor and putting passes where people don’t normally see them. Living up to the hype to date.

no he's not

he just throws wild passes all the time and sometimes they hit their targets, more often though, they don’t.

It’s the highlight passes he throws that gets him so much attention, but he’s a terrible decision maker, making him a weak passer.

players on good teams are overrated, players on bad teams are underrated

I’ve heard JJ Hickson’s name 10x more in the media, like he’s the next Karl Malone, just b/c he played with Lebron. The same goes for Taj Gibson. They’re popular b/c they play on good teams and only look good b/c of the teams around them.

Yes Lopez is a joke around the league b/c he had 1 bad year rebounding and plays for the Nets. We will show EVERYONE wrong soon enough…

Those things are cyclical. I would go as far as to say that within two years today’s West will be as bad as that era’s East.

That’s not the point though. We did not get smacked by the Spurs in the Finals. Losing in 6 isn’t getting smacked, especially when we blew multiple 4th quarter leads due to Coach Roboto’s silly substitution patterns.

hard to win games

when your supporting cast is missing wide open jumpers and dropping passes that hit them in the hands. Deron isn’t a Rose or Lebron that can score at will. He’s best when he can set up his teammates, which in turns opens up his game because he see’s less pressure and double teams. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have that luxury right now which leads to his game in decline.

At the end of the season, we’ll still have Lopez and Brooks, a high draft pick, ability to give him max money, AND cap room for a max FA. And front loading a MAX contract to a RFA on a poor team could land us a big name. Anyone else remember Utah needing to take out a loan to cover a front-loaded MLE offer for Millsap?

It’s about maintaining cap flexibility and assets to make that second big move to get a superstar. This team, on paper, should be at around .500 if:

1) Lopez doesn’t go down, which a) lost a 20PPG scorer and b) lost Andrei Kirilenko to start at the SF
2) Deron Williams, Humphries and Brooks don’t get banged up as much
3) The Nets actually have a training camp to get a system in place

They just do suck with what they have right now. Plain and simple. It’s not like they’re doing it on purpose, haha.

IDK I think ive done OK before
Draft evaluation

Top Teir – All stars
1. DWill- If Odom isnt getting him then neither is Farmar, Morrow and a prayer
2. Valanciunas – Might be the best player out of this class in 2 years. Lopez + Vala Holla
3. Irving- Will never be a top 5 PG but will always be good.
4. Kanter- Al Horford comparisons are legit
5. Leonard – Would look real good in NJ.
6. Klay Thompson – one of the best prospects. Might go as high as 4

2nd Teir Solid Starters
7. B Knight
8. Singleton – Defensive stud. He would be an ideal target to trade up for for NJ
9. Vesely – Solid player but Upside is limited
10. Vucevic – Krstic before Krstic hurt his knee which is pretty good
11. Hamilton – might be the only 20 ppg guy in this draft. Undervalued
12. Burks – Mixed feeling on him. depends on where he goes

Teir 3 Rotational player
13. Fredette – Good scoring backup who comes off the bench ala Ben Gordon
14. Brooks – I like Brooks upside alot. Most realistic player Nets should be able to trade for
14. Motiejunas – Will be good on the right team. Would look good next to D12
15. Faried – Size scares me but high energy play is infectious. Makes any team play harder
16. J Harper – Will be a good rotational player in the NBA. I like him alot
17. Shumpert – Best guard defender in the draft. Has athletic ability to be good
18. J Johnson – Will be a solid backup for 10 years
19. N Smith – Like him alot better at 36. Solid if not spectactuar

Sleepers
Bertans – Worth the wait. Has a picture perfect J
N Cole – the enigma of this draft. I think he will sneak into the 1st round
Parsons – Will be one of the biggest sleepers in this Draft. Think Tony Kuckoc
C Jenkins- I like this guys Hustle. I think he is going to make it in the NBA

Bust
T Thompson – Classic tweener
Walker – Dejuan Wagner part 2
Biyombo – His offense is too bad to make up for his stellar D. 4 on 5 is hard to win
Marc Morris – poor man’s Al Harington is code word for BUST
Mark Morris – Here is hoping the Knicks take him
T Harris
J Williams
Singler
Reggie Jackson – Not sharing medical records. aka STAY AWAY BK

Undecided
Tyler – even if he sucks 6 fouls from his big body is worth having on the bench
Butler – Everyone is pulling for this kid
Mirotic – see you in 3 years.
Selby – Has potential but hasnt produced yet. should have stayed in school

A few things...

You don’t like Tristan Thompson because he’s a tweener, but you like Derrick Williams? Williams isn’t going to rebound, defend or score efficiently enough to be a PF and I don’t see him as a SF. Future role player. I see him in the mold of Thaddeus Young. Thompson, on the other hand, can defend PF and will at least be solid there.

If I recall correctly, Brandon Knight’s defensive numbers in college were terrible. Very few PG prospects with a steal rate as low as Knight’s ever became productive NBA players.

It’s one thing to have opinions. It’s another thing to have opinions backed up with some kind of statisical evidence.

and KG and Kidd struggle like hell to compete with that team, if tha tdeal would have fallen through. You MUST keep either RJ or Carter.

Kenyon Martin, Keith Van Horn, and Kerry Kittles for Kevin Garnett. Minnesota wanted RJ, Thorn said A-Train instead. Talks fells apart. Thorn called it “An exercise in futility”

Wow guys. Read the ESPN article that rory posted.

There are so many similarities. Replace Thorn with King, Deron with Kidd, Garntt with Howard and it is nearly a mirror image.

“If we had could have gotten Garnett,” Thorn said, “I think that Jason definitely would have committed to us long term.”

Also, to those talking about not wanting the superstar model:

While not every move, other than Jordan, worked in Chicago for Thorn, he’s had the Midas touch in Jersey. Starting with his hiring of Byron Scott as coach. The two share the same view that it takes at least two marquee players, defense, rebounding and teamwork to win championships. Other than Kidd, that second marquee talent is still a problem. But of a more immediate concenr, Thorn admits he just doesn’t know how all the changes will work out.</blockquote

MarShon Brooks has the dreaded.
"I’m anxious to see if they make the same mistake twice." - Shaq talking about the Magic.

by Maxyboy on Jan 6, 2012 4:40 PM EST reply actions

Didn't Rod Thorn, before leaving, tell Prokhorov...

esentially the same thing ? Get one superstar then the other will hopefully follow.

Sounds pretty lame to me…No wonder Thorn didn’t draft well. He was more concerned with his superstar theory on how to build a winning team then building one the old fashioned way with good drafting and smart trades.

I never thought Thorn was a grest G.M….If I recall Jason Kidd and Vince Carter were practically given to him as long as we would pick up the huge contracts from Dallas and Toronto…

Thorn’s biggest failure was finding another good big man to play along side those early and middle 2000’s teams especially aftter K-Mart left…

In Thorn I never trusted but he sure seemed liked a swell guy on camera…

Kind of stupid to just give him away though

especially to a division rival. Must have been bittersweet when the Raptors won the divison and 3rd seed, only to be knocked out by Carter and the 6th seed Nets

But of course we are also weak at SF but I would rather get the big man first and wing it at SF for now.

that is a recap of HamBerger's BS article

and he is wrong, by amnestying Haywood and cutting Odom they won’t be close enought to 2 maxes, those 2 are moves they need to make to have room for ONE max.

by Andres B on Jan 6, 2012 5:29 PM EST up reply actions

I just can't stand the bias everyone in the media has against us

Dwight has the NETS as his preferred destination… no one cares, they just ignore that and think he’ll go to Dallas if he becomes a free agent.

Jim Buss basically hinted at Dwight not being willing to go there… no one cares, they just ignore it and assume he’ll end up there.

The Nets do have the cap space to sign both Deron and Dwight to max contracts, Dallas doesn’t… no one cares, they just assume they will.

The Nets suck with a gutted roster full of injured players (the few good we actually have), place holders, cap fillers and guys who won’t be here come summertime, and it means DWill is gone even if he says he sees the big picture. OTOH, Dallas, who was supposed to be title contenders, are receiving an embarrassing blow out after another, yet that won’t affect how attractive they look to free agents.

Perception > Reality.

man...

…can we win in a blowout for once? I know with the talent level we have, it’s unlikely. Still, a blowout win tonight would ease the blowout loss to the Heat this weekend.

by Versifiervt on Jan 6, 2012 6:20 PM EST up reply actions

NETS are going to take this one. D-Will is hungry for the win, and I think Humphries rebounding ability is going to allow Okur to follow Bargnani around on the perimeter.

Morrow is going to find his stroke, and so is Shawne Williams- I know Brook Lopez isn’t there but these guys are also missing some wide open shots, too, especially you, Shawne Williams.

Stevenson has shown the ability to hit the 3 so we are going to rely on him tonight. The only way the Nets win is with good defense. Go NETS!

by mytoemytoe on Jan 6, 2012 6:33 PM EST reply actions

I don’t mean to imply we are going to rely on Stevenson to score a lot of points. Just that every bench player is going to have to contribute.

And if I have to see Jordan Farmar I better see Gaines/Williams, Farmar, Stevenson, Hump/Williams and Okur/Petro.
