At Practice (!), D-Will, Hump Play, But MarShon, DJ In Street Clothes

New Jersey Nets

Beat writers just out of the Nets first practice since Christmas Eve report that both Deron Williams and Kris Humphries participated, but that MarShon Brooks and Damion James were in street clothes. The Nets, who've played six games in eight days, worked with the coaching staff at the Raptors training facility inside the Air Canada Centre. The Nets play the rising Raptors Friday night.

While Brooks (sprained left ankle) is "questionable", the Nets PR staff tweets that James (sore right foot) is "doubtful" while Humphries and Deron Williams are "probable".

Avery Johnson said Brook Lopez will be at the Heat game Saturday . "I'm looking forward to seeing him,'' said Johnson.

Weird becasue in the summer league games he dropped 30 easily within like 2 and half quartersand was hitting the midrange and 3 point jumper

He also had a post game but after he got injured the first time everything went away not sure what happened.

"We're not there yet, but we're going somewhere," Johnson said. "And we're going to Brooklyn. We're not going to contract. We're going to Brooklyn."

I haven't been able to watch a lot of the Nets so far this year between being away over Christmas week and school

but while i was watching the game against the Pacers, D-James scored a couple nice buckets down low on the post.

I think its a confidence thing with him

remembers summer league 2010...

I guess that’s what I get for looking too much into those games…he was the whole package. James still has potential to be a very good rotation player with his defense, rebounding, occasional garbage buckets…but he’s not starting quality.

by BKNfastbreak on Jan 5, 2012 5:55 PM EST up reply actions

I agree.

I would love for him to be our backup SF but once the Nets are for real I don’t want him as our starting SF. Wilson Chandler maybe?

Yeah not sure what happened

Has to be that he did not continuing to work on his game offensively does not feel as confident in games.

He gives great effort, is a good defender and an excellent rebounder.

What makes me nervous though is this whole sore foot thing. If this is the foot he broke, I’m more nervous about Lopez’s injury now.

by Jack Handy Jr on Jan 5, 2012 5:47 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not worried about BroPez

Robin Lopez had the same exact injury and came back 7 weeks later and has not had any recurring problems since then. Pau Gasol also had the same injury when he was with Memphis and has not had any recurring problems. Also, the bone that Brook broke is on a non-weight bearing part of his foot. The broken bones on the weight-bearing part of the foot are usually the ones that cause the recurring problems. Brook will be fine don’t worry.

Crap!

DJames will be out for two weeks. Look for Avery to play with three guards on the floor. MarShon will play, but really shouldn’t. DWILL and Humph will play. This is a game we could win. I don’t want to be 1-9 after ten games. I think I will go out to a movie Friday night, and DVR the game, that way, if we suck, I won’t have to suffer through the whole game, in real time. OK, I am a weak person, but for ten minutes against the Celtics, we looked like a high school team, MY HIGH SCHOOL TEAM!

by cprash on Jan 6, 2012 2:35 AM EST up reply actions

from the other thread. to point out three things

1. These reporters and this includes Woj don’t no squa, I really realizedt they said this and that last year with Melo and they were wrong so many times. They report what sources tell them, the only person that really knows is Dwight Howard and (maybe Deron Williams wink wink) people tell them whatever. We heard last year Melo would go to the Nets, the nets were on Melo’s list he wasn’t going anywhere but New York this is the exact same situation.

2. The only realistic optino no matter what anyone says and my logic for this is what I said above is the Lakers. The mavs are in no position to trade, then nets and Lakers can make offers. Right now all reports are the Lakers will not Deal Bynum and Gasol and maybe not even Bynum for Howard. While this is subject to change untill it does we are in good shape.

3. If Dwight hits free agency the nets are the favourite times 100, this is also a dream come true for the nets. Brook, Deron, Howard, Brooks are otehr pieces and two talented rookies not to mention what other minor FA move we could make. These devolpments and more incompetence by the Orlando only increase the granted very slim logic would dictate chance the Magic will try and keep or trade him somewhere he won’t sign. That would be great for the nets.

"Next year, with a full training camp, I think he can go after that Scott Skiles' record of 30." - Billy King

by shea23 on Jan 5, 2012 6:11 PM EST reply actions

Nets cap sapce is key

By giving us cap space we have leverage. The lakers for example have no leverage or less as they can’t sign Dwight. Even if we don’t get Dwight, Deron may not be a lock to leave. Where will he sign? If we don’t get Dwight he will likely be on the lakers Deron can’t go there. Dallas are playing like crap and they will ahve gutted their team all they will have is Grampa Dirk,

The nets will have Brook Lopez, Brooks and a new talented rookie a Barnes, or Davis or whoever or to go along with Brooklyn and the better contract they will also have a lot more cap space to add other peices which they be happy to do with no prospect at Dwight. This is because Dallas will be limited with the max contract of Dirk and followed by the addition of Deron. The nets will have Brook on a rather small cap hold and they might as well spend their space and resign Brook using the bird right to go over the cap as hes likely to command big big money anyway. .And we saw what Bily got in Brooks this year imagine in this draft with Rockets pick if we get it in this draft.

It must be possible that Dwight is just moisoing with Otis.

If he’s willing to take less to play in Brooklyn, then all he has to do around the deadline is say, “Well, I’d like to play the season out, I’m still not 100% on leaving”. Otis then hangs onto him like a fool, Dwight leaves in free agency for us and we don’t lose a thing. Better position to win a ring for Dwight.

Comes with the territory of journalism, you often have to state a position when you don’t have one. For what it’s worth, Hollinger is very objective. I doubt you even have the Insider subscription to read him, because if you did I think you’d appreciate how good a basketball writer he is.

??

What does this even mean?

Hollinger created a basketball statistic to measure player performance (it’s not perfect but it’s very accurate) and he writes about players mostly through the lens of that and other advanced stats like True Shooting %.

What does that have to do with him taking cheap shots at the Nets? The Nets are bad, he’s making fun of them, you gotta get over it. Hollinger is one of the best basketball writers out there, and I think you’re usually doing yourself a disservice if you don’t occasionally read his articles.

I'm starting to like this guy Tim Bontemps...(NY POST blog posted above by Net Income)

Only guy I read who saw that Brooks was all alone last night…

- Playing without Deron Williams, it was clear just how limited the Nets are offensively in the second half. The Celtics began to shade Kevin Garnett over towards Brooks to double-team him whenever he touched the ball, basically eliminating Brooks from the game. Nets coach Avery Johnson said afterwards that Brooks tweaked his ankle in the first half, and that probably contributed to his quiet second half, but it doesn’t change the fact that teams will be able to double Brooks freely moving forward.
Think about it: if Brooks is on the court, like he was at times last night, with Johan Petro, Shelden Williams and Sundiata Gaines, why wouldn’t you double-team him? None of those other guys (although Gaines has shown he can knock down an open jumper) are going to scare anyone.

considering what he's said about him in the past

that “No Way” is just another one of Shaq’s bullying ways. It’s getting old too analysts are there to give some sort of analysis imo..

it's bad news for them that they have to play us!

it’s a reference to the bad news bears Movie

They were a pee wee league baseball team. Sucked. Everytime they played another team they’d go, “we’re playing the yankees next game, and what does that mean?” “bad news for the yankees.”

It’s funny how the media and other team’s fans overplay the fact that we suck this year, when we didn’t get better players precisely to have a shot at Dwight, and have been injury plagued (our whole starting 5 is injured as of now lol), yet they compeltely overlook how bad the Mavs are sucking for a team who is supposed to be a title contender lol, but in their case it doesn’t matter when talking about free agents, yet for us it’s a disaster even if Deron says he see the big picture smh.

by Andres B on Jan 5, 2012 9:05 PM EST up reply actions

agreed

it’s not unheard of. when Miami won in 07 they were built for that year, a “win now” kind of team, and then lost in the first round to chicago the next year. Dallas was probably even more so “win now”, a culmination of a decade of championship attempts. a team like that isn’t built to repeat, and they lost a key cog and got older.

by sheepareevil on Jan 5, 2012 9:07 PM EST up reply actions

as of now they're out

I’d be surprised if they didn’t even get an 8 seed, but there are no guarantees out West. a team like Utah, Houston or Golden State could compete for that spot.

if houston wasnt built for .500 ball instead of a title run

wait a minute

we don’t know if Berger was wrong about the Knicks…just cuz DWill called him out in front of the world don’t mean he wasn’t thinking about it.

DWill wasn’t going to resign with the Jazz. Walsh was targeting DWill or CP3 before Dolan stepped over him to make Melo happen.

So don’t be so sure about DWill’s plans before he was traded to NJ.

it is an interesting question

who would you rather play with if you’re dwill???? Say we dont get Dwight Howard
we still have plenty of space and solid draft pick, so would you rather play with say:
Brooks, top draft pick, top free agent, hump, lopez
or
dirk, terry, beabois, marion and whoever else they got

Dallas...

That team (minus Barea, Chandler & Stevenson) won a Championship. He said he doesn’t want to be part of a rebuilding project. Nets don’t have a chance for a title for atleast 3-4 years, making him in his 30’s before he has a SHOT. So no, unfortunately.

…Tyson/Amare/Shumpert isn’t enough? I think it could be. I doubt it happens and KBerger just wanna get NYK fans riled up…but heck…if I’m the Knicks I make that offer.

This concerns me a little despite how ridiculous it may sound, but again, when the Knicks interest in Melo was first reported, the media and the rest of us laughed it off cuz the Knicks assets were deemed too little.

NYK may throw another wrench in Billy King’s plans…again. Dang.

by Versifiervt on Jan 5, 2012 11:09 PM EST reply actions

i want to just be like, "i know, right!?!?"...

…but man…Knicks prolly aren’t on D12’s list cuz he thinks they wouldn’t break up Melo/Stat to get him.

And think about this…u think SVG wouldn’t mind having Stat/Amare plus a young SG like Shumpert? Orl not only stays relevant but a top 5 team…at least.

by Versifiervt on Jan 5, 2012 11:12 PM EST up reply actions

AND...just cuz Amare contract isn't insured...

…doesn’t mean Otis Smith and Orl ownership will shy away…let’s remember that they have done crazier things in the past which is why D12 wants out anyway.

by Versifiervt on Jan 5, 2012 11:13 PM EST up reply actions

If Tyson/Amare/Shump +Melo isn't even top 8 right now

How do you figure Tyson/Amare/Shump in ORL is top 5?

Dr. J~Super Buck~Draz~JKidd~Deron

by NJ4Life on Jan 5, 2012 11:14 PM EST up reply actions

Cuz they'd have a deeper team and a better coach...simple.

SVG preaches defense.

Ryan Anderson, JJ Reddick, Jameer Nelson, Big Baby Davis, and Shumpert would be a way better supporting cast than what the knicks have now.

Wish there was a way for Lakers to get Marshon Brooks #GotMoves

This is amazing.. comes up when you search Marshon Brooks on Twinitor.

There’s a lot of buzz about him right now and a lot of "I told you I said he was going to be the Rookie of the Year stuff.

Regardless of whether he can become an all around great player, Marshon already has the thing that superstars need, the ability to make people go “wow!”. This guy has got that.

by mytoemytoe on Jan 5, 2012 11:24 PM EST reply actions

Also , from a Providence Journal article today:

"Obviously, I always believe in myself, but I didn’t think I’d be so successful so fast with my style of play, honestly," he said. "Avery Johnson has been helping me a lot with my confidence. That’s the main thing as a rookie. You’re going out there and you’re facing up against Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, Rajon Rondo, you’ve just got to believe in yourself. You see these guys on TV your whole life, it’s like, ‘Wow. They’re incredible.’ When you go out there and you actually believe in yourself, it gives you a sense of confidence and really helps you a lot."

for example they have Aldridge, who can score in a half court setting, which we never had. but the basic offensive philosophy is very similar.

Felton has got to be the steal of the offseason

he fits in perfectly in Portland

by NJ Champ on Jan 6, 2012 12:57 AM EST via Android app up reply actions

funnily enough it appears Denver won in that trade too.

Miller is a better fit as a backup, he brings veteran leadership and toughness, whereas as Felton and Lawson were too similar, too likely to fight over minutes.

by sheepareevil on Jan 6, 2012 12:58 AM EST up reply actions

He's playing with a lot of talent, its easy for him

but Miller was a underrated PG and playmaker IMO. If he was a bit younger, he would have never been traded and would have been a better fit for this team IMO.

Andre Miller is one of the most underrated PGs in the last decade IMO

when he left the Sixers, they immediately went to hell the next season. not to mention he never misses a game.

by sheepareevil on Jan 6, 2012 1:01 AM EST up reply actions

that also had a bit to do with iverson leaving as well

what? no

I mean the Andre Iguodala, Elton Brand Sixers. they made the playoffs in ’08 and ’09, Miller left that off season, and then they were a lotto team in ’10.

he never could shoot from deep though which made him a liability for the P&R

by TWilliAM on Jan 6, 2012 1:02 AM EST up reply actions

the Knicks were a better team with Felton, Amare and Gallo

that team actually played well together. no defense, but decent enough, and at least their offense worked. the Melo-Amare team not only plays zero defense, but their offense fights itself.

by sheepareevil on Jan 6, 2012 1:08 AM EST up reply actions

Be thankful for that lol

because if they ever figure it out, the Knicks will become a real problem.

by Shameer1016 on Jan 6, 2012 1:09 AM EST up reply actions

it's fundamentally flawed

it’s not as simple as “figuring it out”. you can’t magically turn both Carmelo and Amare into non-ball stoppers, you can’t find enough room in the paint for both Amare and Chandler, and you can’t turn the clock back to ‘07 for Baron Davis. even if they fire D’Antoni, they’ll be improvement but no contender.

by sheepareevil on Jan 6, 2012 1:20 AM EST up reply actions

The problem really is, if Carmelo or Amare are going to dominate the ball

they have to become playmakers. Its more ideal for the SF to control the ball and game, something Melo lacks at times. BUT, if Melo ever gets it, which I think he will, they will become a problem. Not sure if Dantoni isn’t drawing up the right players, or focusing on the wrong player. Even with a good PG, one or the other will still end up dominating the ball, but it all comes down to Melo’s willingness to make the extra pass or learn how to use a pick better.

How do you figure?

Melo is a known quantity at this point. Did you expect him to turn into prime Crash Wallace in D’Antoni’s system?

The Knicks got their star. They sold their tickets. They’ll find winning a championship with Melo a whole lot tougher.

Oh pissing blimey there's jam coming out of the walls!
