Deron Williams: "There's A Bigger Picture"

Photo

Talking to reporters in Boston Wednesday morning, Deron Williams gave Billy King a vote of confidence, despite the Nets' 1-5 start.

Here's Williams' full quotes, from Fred Kerber...

"I never started a season like this, so it’s very, very unusual for me, very frustrating, very tough, but at the same time, it’s all unusual circumstances.

"We have a new team, pretty much. Still have a lot to add. I just try to look at the bigger picture, as much as possible, but still stay focused on trying to get some wins” Williams said, indicating he believes in GM Billy King who he thinks will get the necessary parts.

"I'm very confident. Very confident in what Billy's doing, and that's why I'm trying to be – I am being -- patient. I understand. Like I said, there's a bigger picture."

Shocking..not.

So many on here have already jumped off the cliff yet the only thing has changed outside of Brook’s injury is our draft pick has become more valuable.

The plan is Dwight..be patient.

agreed better for us

thats ultimate win scenario, get to keep our picks and just sign him outright

even maybe keep Lopez, if we move some other contracts

by Henry Sanchez on Jan 4, 2012 12:44 PM EST up reply actions

We can keep Lopez easily enough in that scenario.

Nets will have space for dwight, Lopez’s cap hold won’t be too bad, possibly have a little space left to work with. We should dump farmar though and Petro if possible.

If the Nets sign Howard, I trade Lopez for a dynamic 3

Lopez does not have the lateral quickness to be a 4 in the NBA. Sure, it would be a good combo on paper, but I don’t think it’s a great idea. The ideal PF for Dwight – David West – is off the market so I’d rather get a 3 than keep a weird combo together at the 4 and 5.

obviously Lopez/Brooks/NJ ’12 pick/ Hou pick/Hump/Okur? for D12/Hedo?

i guess there will be a 3rd team involved, we need to send more salary back for both D12/Hedo. One thing i will say is if we are also throwing in Brooks, King should negotiate to not give up a lot of picks beyond this year’s draft

imo

with our pick clearly headed towards top 3, I think that brooks should be off of the table. We’re giving them cap relief, a center that clearly is a lot better than people give him credit for, and possibly the #1 pick in a loaded draft

If Dwight were to just say I want to go to the Nets and thats it how would that look. He would take a crazy PR hit especially.

and you know this how?

Consider also that right now Bynum looks like a stud, we’ll see how long it lasts, but brook never put these numbers up. It could be good also, if bynum is consistent, LA may find the need for a big center more moot.

Your “reality” adds up to nothing. What D12 and Deron have publicly said is completely irrelevant to whether they stay or go, and to where they go. The only relevant facts are the assets (including cap space) the Nets have. Everything else is meaningless.

I can’t bring myself to root for another team. Bandwagoning is just…I dunno. like why would i hop on someone’s bandwagon because they’re doing good?

not calling killa a bandwagoner either, but I have a friend who was a Nets fan with me back when we were winning, now all of a sudden he’s an OKC fan. Like what???? it just screams something wrong when people can just jump bandwagons like that

but just because I’m a Nets fan, it doesn’t mean I don’t like to watch or root for other teams. I think everyone likes OKC because of there youth, talent, and the way they were formed.

I have certain teams I take a second interest in if I like the way they play

the Nets are so bad I need to enjoy watching good basketball as well. I’m a a fan of the NBA and the interesting storylines it provides. the difference is, even I if I like watching the Celtics or the Thunder, I would never jump ship and become a “fan” or one of those teams and become emotionally invested when they win or lose. I may root for another team primarily come playoff time, but the Celtics losing game 7 of the 2010 finals doesn’t even compare to the hurt I feel from the Nets losing a regular season road game to the Cavs.

The Bush administration told us they had reason to believe Iraq was harboring WMD, and it turned out they weren’t. Whether the administration guessed wrong on that point or actually knew better beforehand and simply lied to us depends on your interpretation of what they told the American public. They did pass it off as factual that Iraq had WMD, more than just a hunch, imo.

what he says should be taken with a huge grain of salt

Let me address this. My ostensibly comment should not have been directed directly at you, and for that I apologize. I was being glib and flippant. What I was referring to are comments by those of us who disregard what Deron actually says in quotes to reporters as simple lipservice, that Deron’s going to leave the Nets at the end of the year because, after all, “we are the Nets and who would want to sign with this garbage franchise?” I think such a belief is a conspiracy theory because it disregards the facts of what Deron actually says in public in favor of some underlying, ulterior motive that Deron is actively working to cover up via his comments. My mistake was attaching this conspiratorial belief to you and not explaining it right off the bat.

But, yes, I do laugh at that particular conspiracy theory.

Kidd-Gilchrist arrived at UK admittedly shy. "I was scared at first to be a leader," he said. He also came, though, with a will to excel so overpowering he soon became a starter over senior Darius Miller, an in-state product and the reigning MVP of the SEC Tournament. Kidd-Gilchrist’s practice habits and commitment to work overtime made him a leader on a team that had no other genuine candidate.

When Calipari mentioned Michael Jordan once started a "Breakfast Club" for teammates to do extra workouts early in the day, Kidd-Gilchrist goaded his teammates into similar sessions.

"We had one guy that stopped about a week and a half ago, and it showed today how he played," Calipari said. "The guys that continue to do those extra things, the extra work—it’s amazing. You get what you deserve in life, and basketball."

If we end up being a lottery team as it seems will be the case right now….that right there is a very good incentive for the Magic to trade with us in addition to whatever else BK can gather together from around the league with the expiring contracts and picks that we have.

I just hope through all of this that we can keep our Jersey native guy moving into Brooklyn. MarShon is just too special. He has the right attitude to make himself be successful in this league. He’s got good heart and clearly we feel how fresh it is to get behind a player like that since we haven’t had one in what seems like ages.

Doesn’t have much of an offensive game yet, neither did Garnett in his first season (remember, he was straight out of HS) or Howard.

Has range out to 19 feet on his jumper but he’s clearly not confident using it yet in game.

Mark Story: Davis arrives late to partyy

“What you have to do to get to the basket against that guy is almost impossible,” said Russ Smith, who led Louisville with 30 points. “When he closes out around the basket, it’s like ‘Whoa.’ He’s already tall, then his leaping ability is tremendous.”
In the first half, he had no points, no shot attempts, four rebounds and one block.By game’s end, the 6-foot-10 Chicago product had 18 points, 10 rebounds and six blocked shots.

This is against the 4th best team in the nation.

by mytoemytoe on Jan 4, 2012 1:07 PM EST up reply actions

Looks like he could be one of those ultimate role player types to me.

Blocks , runs the floor well , cuts well and finishes , rebounds , steals ……. but I haven’t seen much of a real offensive game from him in college. But with Dwight , Deron , and Marshon ……. I’m not sure they would need a big offensive guy. As long as he can knock down enough wide open mid-range jumpers and pass to the scorers and pick for them , he’d fit well.

Speaking of Rubio...

He didn’t look so hot in Euro-League and now he does in the NBA.

Maybe Bojan does the same. Maybe once these Euro stars get drafted in the NBA they coast a bit in the Euro League ?

my suggestion to troubled Nets fans.

watch the MarShonBrooks youtube channel. its a highlight compilation of all his games. Its amazing watching how focused and confident Swag is as a scorer. He’s got great footwork, his fakes get people all the time, and he passes really well also.

its nice to imagine how much better he could be if he keeps adjusting well and if he develops nice chemistry with D-will in the backcourt.

I can understand why they aren’t in a rush to trade Dwight, they would have looked crazy trying to hype this up without him.

by MrDollarBills on Jan 4, 2012 1:15 PM EST reply actions

I think if Bynum keeps playing great.. great for us as LA may just keep him

Bynum has been outstanding this season. Only 3 games I realize.. but he has posted dominant numbers.. better than Dwight in fact.

If this goes to the All Star break.. why would the Lakers want to trade Bynum for Dwight? Maybe they would.. but what is the point in trading a 20/12 center who is on a better contract (for one more season) for another who may or may not fit in?

Thus far, Bynum is proving to be in the elite center class. Again, it may not hold up.

If Bynum is great.. maybe the Lakers drop out of the bidding so it is us versus teams that will want Dwight on a one year rental

If that is the case.. maybe Lopez and 2 firsts (rockets and ours in 2013) gets it done

by orangeeater on Jan 4, 2012 1:24 PM EST reply actions

by orangeeater on Jan 4, 2012 1:54 PM EST up reply actions

Disagree

with what the hornets got for chris paul, a straight up deal between bynum and howard isn’t feasible in my opinion.

you’d have to throw in another player or at least some picks etc.

by Roccor420 on Jan 4, 2012 2:09 PM EST up reply actions

Very true.

unfortunately I’d have to agree with you at this point. Bynum is having a monster start and I would call him the 2nd best center in the league at this moment.

Maybe i’m just hoping that Otis and the Magic owners won’t accept a straight up deal for Bynum and Howard.

by Roccor420 on Jan 4, 2012 2:26 PM EST up reply actions

OR

maybe I’m hoping that Otis and Magic owners aren’t actively trying to give Dwight to Lakers like they lost Shaq. I’m hoping there is bitterness there but that only lasts so long as how attractive the offer is.

There’s a difference between “i am trying to be patient” and “i understand the situation, and I will remain patient”. Trying means that he’s close to being fed up.

The way i see it it if the nets are Dwights clear favorite than he will be here.

For some reason there was a window where the Lakers tumbled down the list.

in some ways, Orlando getting Bynum would be a waste

Seems nobody wants to stay there long term. it may sound appealing.. but if it was so great why would every star eventually leave?

In fact, if Orlando trades Bynum for Dwight
Just sign Bynum as a free agent after 2013.. maybe he wants to return to the NY area

by orangeeater on Jan 4, 2012 1:50 PM EST reply actions

Things havent been better for the Nets IMO

-Bynum is playing too good for LA to trade him. Why trade Bynum and Gasol for Howard when Bynum is playing better then Howard.

-As I have said all along, Brooks looks like a stud. We finally got lucky in the draft. DWill, Hump and Lopez being out tonite is a good thing. He get to see what the Kid can do as the focal point of the offense. We might look better then you think vs Boston because running the offense through DWill means getting everyone involved. Running the offense through Brooks takes alot of pressure off of players like James and Sheldon.

-We might get a superstar in the Draft AND Free Agency.
C – Howard
PF – Lopez
SF – Barnes
SG – Brooks
PG – DWIll
We have the $ to sign DWill and Howard. We can also resign Lopez and go over the cap. If we get Barnes then we have 2 very good players on rookie contracts (Barnes,Brooks) Sure we will be over the Luxury Cap but do you think Proky cares about that? This lineup would be unbeatable.

I don't his quotes today implies he understands the situation long-term

It’s not about this year. It never has been. It’s about Brooklyn and beyond.

Also, when he said he didn't care about the additional endorsements in NY, I don't believe it

A) He fired his long-time, mom-and-pop boutique agent for Jeff Schwartz
B) He just signed with Red Bull. No chance that happens without being in a major market and without leaving Utah.

by ZR on Jan 4, 2012 2:34 PM EST up reply actions

We have come a long way since 12-70

-Lopez was a 2nd year player back then. He has since become a 20 pt scorer

- We have a top 10 NBA player now DWill

- Even if we miss out on Dwight we will be getting a very good player in this years draft who should be ready to play next year. Wall, Favors, Turner and Cousins wasnt that good in retrospect.

We would have been a good team this year if Lopez didnt get hurt. DWill, Brooks, Hump,Lopez would have been a very good basis to build around. Injuries do happen though but we stand to benefit greatly from them with a good draft pick.

This season is actually one of disappointment

I knew there would be injuries. Too difficult to expect everyone to stay healthy without a rigorous schedule and no training camp. But it’s awful how debilitating those injuries actually are.

With the emergence of Marshon Brooks, the Nets actually could be .500 this season. Deron, Lopez, Hump, Brooks and James as a starting 5 is solid for the time being. Losing a 20 PPG scorer and a double-double machine is just crippling.

I hope Deron stays patient but it’s going to be hard come March.

Has it dawned on anyone, that LA may not even do Bynum for Howard straight up?

Jim Buss LOVES the kid, and he’s finally putting up big numbers. Whose to say he couldn’t be as good or better than Howard? I was one of the ones saying Bynum was a bum to start the season, but he’s killin it right now. His health is the only concern, he is right now the 2nd best center in the league.

Does anybody not think another Dwight Howard

(or Deron Williams, or Derick Rose or great player for that matter)
could be in the next draft… or maybe was already drafted? (See: Marshon Brooks).

The NBA has been replenishing its “Superstars” for years. (although that description has become a lil’ too inclusive)

So, why are so many ready to give up on players like Lopez and Brooks and a butt load of Draft Picks who could be the next guy? For Guys that frankly aren’t Jordan and aren’t Kobe.

Yes, You have to get a lil’ lucky in the draft (Kobe, MJ, Durant, MArshon?)

But, for Buddha’s sake, can we stop this endless cycle of superstar wishing and shopping that has destroyed the last 3 seasons… please

So not true

The Nets draft history has been awful, so have their free agent signings. They had no money up until last year so they had to give away assets. They are still operating at a loss. But staying the course is cool.

The Nets just got Deron Williams, you don’t start rebuilding again. How is this post rational in anyway? I’m just happy BK doesn’t agree with you.

by Claud on Jan 4, 2012 2:49 PM EST up reply actions

So you're agreeing...pick a side...

Those trades were not to make the Nets better for the future or provide a quick fix. They were to cut costs, plain and simple. Ratner invested nothing in this team and did little to improve the infrastructure. The Nets were stuck in litigation over the Barclays Center.

Thorn did the best he could with what he had. It’s unfortunate but it’s what it is. The Nets have the assets now, they shouldn’t be “rebuilding” through the draft. When you have Deron Williams, you make moves NOW.

by ZR on Jan 4, 2012 2:57 PM EST up reply actions

no man.

I said they made a lot of trades saying they would fix everything, and that i didn’t like them and we should have stuck by our guys, and supplemented them with the Draft rather than trading them away on supposed Cure-Alls.

That is my arguement about not getting rid of Brook for Dwight.

I have been pretty consistent with that the whole time.

Brook-Brooks-Brooklyn

by OneCGuy on Jan 4, 2012 3:01 PM EST up reply actions

Alright slow down

1) When you say “they made a lot of trades saying THEY would fix everything”, who are you talking about? Furthermore, are you seriously going to believe the lip service that Courtney Lee would provide an instant replacement to Vince Carter?
2) How could you “stick by our guys” when one has a “migraine” and refuses to play, one has a $16M salary that was cap crippling given his production and on the downside of his career, and another who was severely overpaid and also beginning to decline? (Kidd, Carter, Jefferson if you can’t tell)? Nets needed to rebuild, which they already did.
3) Supplement who with the draft? Kidd? Carter? Jefferson? The guys who were gone? The guys who the Nets couldn’t afford?
4) The Nets draft history was so bad under Thorn for about 6 years that they couldn’t supplement the talent that they had in that time span.

If you’re going to make an argument, make it clear. I still have no idea what you’re point is besides let’s rebuild. Which makes no sense.

All for the Superstar Model…
And it’s obvious I will have to sit through another year, albeit a lockout shortened year.
And what will that very likely get me:
A very Good PG (Who’s mental toughness, maturity and leadership are starting to come into question) &
A dominant Center who has limitations in his game and who may not have the ferocity to tale the next step) & little to nothing else on a roster.
That is the BEST case scenario.

The Perfect Big Picture

There are two scenarios to this. Now die Hard fans you must see the glass as half full in the mist of the storm…
Scenario 1. The magic wait too long to trade D12 to us. Our pick becomes a legitimate top 1 candidate but for sure top 4. He tells agent I will sign as free agent Nets don’t have to trade for me now cause screwed with me so I am going to screw with them (Magic). This creates a domino effect. We win lottery and get the number 1 Cleveland Gets 2 and NO get the 3rd and fifth (wolves) pick. We trade the number 1 to get the third and fifth… NO drafts Drummond, Cavs draft Barnes and we still end with Davis at 3. At five we draft Kidd-Gilchrist and with Houston pick we draft Andre Roberson… Draft night we send Farmer, Morrow, Petro James and future pick or two to Griz for Rudy Gay. We still have money to outright sign D12 ( Expiring Hump, Gaines and Okur). First day of free agency we sign D12 and trade Brook Lopez in sign and trade to Boston for Garnett and Allen and future picks. Lineup is
Dwill/ Vet minimum
Marshon or Allen start/ Kidd (flip flop who start)
R Gay/ Kidd /Roberson
Garnett/ A Davis/ Vet minimum
Howard/ mid level/Vet minimum

Young but sprinkled with vets to teach the kids and still gives us asset for future moves…It is not out of the realm of probability.

The thing I’m really most impressed about is his BBIQ. He’ll make rookie mistakes, but he’s got very good BBIQ. Just naturally knows where to be and where the ball needs to go.

I also can’t believe he’s waiving off Deron and Gaines so he can go 1 on 1.

Also, check the Atlanta highlights when he dunks it on the breakaway. As he dunks it he’s looking into the camera and yelling “WHOOOO”!

22.7ppg, 17reb, and is a +31 in efficiency. Even healthy Brook doesn’t come close to that. Dwight is 17ppg and 15reb, and is a +25 (though he may not be giving it 100%). I truly believe that LA could have Howard whenever they like. It may make more sense to hope Bynum continues this tear, and makes LA believe Bynum>Howard. Regardless, Dwight could still choose us in the offseason, but the less teams in the mix the better for us.

I think you're totally wrong

1- Bynum sat out the 1st 4 games, including a back-to-back-to-back. He’s putting up big numbers mostly because he’s the only fresh pair of legs the Lakers have right now

2- Bynum is putting up those numbers playing next to Kobe, Pau, and Artest (not calling him World Peace) He never gets doubled. He’ll look much different if he was in Dwight’s or Brook’s situation

3- He’s on a team that has built chemistry over 3 seasons, playing many teams that don’t have real chemistry issues

4- Buss himself not only said that he wouldn’t trade Pau and Bynum, but he said it was crazy to do so. As long as Lopez comes back healthy, he’ll still have more value than Bynum alone

5- Lopez has also had stretches on fire, the last stretch of last season he averaged nearly 30ppg! AND he didn’t have Kobe or Pau, or even Deron helping him either

6- It’s the start to a crazy season, Bynum’s numbers will level out, much like Amare’s did last season. He’s playing more minutes than ever before in a shortened season. His body will break down again soon too, just like Amare.

7- If Bynum does somehow keep this up, then the Lakers aren’t going to trade him anywhere. He has built chemistry with his team, value with the franchise, and won’t get in the way of Kobe’s giant ego like Dwight will

Is MarShon Ready?

Is this a mistake? I hope the coaches are telling him, that he still has lots to learn. His defense is lousy, no awful. We need to keep this young guy’s ego in check. He could go off for 30 tonight, the problem is, no one else will score more than 10, and we lose by 40.
I will watch tonight, only to see MarShon. There won’t be much else to watch. I hope Morrow still gets some burn, as we need him to get on track. Boy, is Farmar buried deep on the bench. Did he fart during a team meeting, or during after game press interviews?

This has probably been mentioned in this thread, but

if Dwight is completely, 100% focused on becoming a Net, then I am not worried. If Otis Smith says to him “We want Andrew Bynum” and Dwight even considers it, then we are in trouble. Dwight has to force his way here. End of story. If Smith does in fact go up to him and says they would rather trade with LA, then Dwight has to reply “Well, tell the Lakers that I will not be extending with them, and then see if they would like to make the trade.”

I think it's fine.

Don’t set yourselves up for disappointment. Celts will be prepared to deal with Marshon…a rookie. Not trying to be a ‘debbie downer’….just being realistic….Nets have no one else Celtics have to be worried about. IF Brooks gets hot early…you’ll see Rajon sticking him tight and the Celts sending double-teams when they have to. There’s also a great chance Brooks gets into early foul trouble anyway. We’ll be down by 15 to 20 before the first quarter is over and Brooks likely will have at least two fouls already too.

The Future

I for one am psyched about the future of this team, which isn’t eye to eye with some in Nets Nation and most NBA followers. Lost in the piling up of the losses, when you read between the lines, Deron really DOES feel that there is a “bigger picture” of this team. It’s starting to get a little crazy looking at his facial expressions during a game and assuming that the franchise is going down the toilet.

I don’t remember ever being happy when I lost in any game, why should he? He’s an NBA player and a competitor, who is focused on the game AT HAND, not playing for another franchise. He wants this team to succeed.

That being said … I really hope D12 makes it through the season not being traded to us or anyone else obviously – then we sign in the offseason. Bolster with our own good (at this lottery) 1st round pick, Houston’s pick, MarShon (incredible building block from what it seems), Brook (flip with a future pick or two for a standout 3). THAT is a big picture that Deron sees. Many directions to get there and were not far off.

by MikeGreg on Jan 4, 2012 4:19 PM EST reply actions

think about D12 making it to Free Agency...

…he might be fine the day after the deadline in thinking he’ll join DWill, Brooks, and Lopez the moment he can. But the reality of skipping out on 30 million sinks in the closer he gets to free agency. If the Magic make a decent run and end up in the Eastern conference finals with Dwight, it may be harder for him to leave that situation and the 30 million.

by Versifiervt on Jan 4, 2012 4:23 PM EST up reply actions

Didn't Adidas sign D-Rose to like a 250 million contract or something?

Dwight would only have to get 12% of that to make up the difference and he’d get a hell of a lot more being the face of a franchise in Brooklyn.
