Deron Williams and Kris Humphries Out vs. Celtics; Brooks To Start

Deron Williams told reporters at Wednesday morning's shootaround that he wouldn't be playing against the Celtics Wednesday night, because of his sore ribs. Williams injured the ribs in the second quarter against the Pacers on Monday in a collision with Tyler Hansbrough.

Kris Humphries, who suffered a sprained shoulder in Sunday's loss in Cleveland, will miss his second straight game. MarShon Brooks will get his first career start in place of Williams.

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist

Is exactly what we would need in a SF with Howard, D Will, Brooks and Lopez.

Could you imagine that lineup?!?!

D Will
Brooks
Kidd Gilchrist
Lopez
Howard

Oh boy that right there is a major championship contender for the next 5 years. Funny this is, so long as the Magic don’t trade Howard it’s complete possible.

Guys... For all of your health and wellness. Do not watch this game.

People will complain when we get blown out… but we’re missing our top 3 players. Maybe Avery should give Farmar the start. My thinking though: do not watch this game and take a night off to enjoy.

This won’t show us good things. Avery might as well rest Brooks and Okur so they don’t get injured since we will have that good luck.

but he could really get 30 in this one.

Interesting how the super rook would react when the defense collapses on him because he’s the only one left to create offense.

I think we should call up this young fellow from the D to help us out a little..he knows Avery play book..and when Deron Williams come back he can play backup small forward since we have very little in the depth chart in that positon, and he wont cost us nothing.he could be a surprise.

Brooks early start

based on some quick research, Marshon Brooks is starting a way ahead of other Nets rookies in the last decade. Richard Jefferson and Sean Williams started in their eighth game; Brook Lopez in his 10th, Nenad Krstic in his 23rd and Derrick Favors in his 34th.

Im never one to jump the gun on young prospects….I was even convinced that Lopez’s solid rookie year was a fluke. But Brooks is maybe the best scoring talent we’ve drafter in over 15 years…hes also not one dimensional. He plays with hustle. He can pass the ball. He rebounds. He cares. He wont dazzle with you with windmill dunks or stuff over a big man or any high flying acrobatics. But he’ll put up some gaudy numbers and besides that turnaround/fadeaway jumper over Joe Johnson was no accident. That was a deliberate move over a premiere shooting guard in the NBA.

Dwight still only wants Nets and is ok with going to the worst team in the NBA… Or he waits until the offseason and takes 1 less guaranteed year.

neither of these options are realistic imo unless again, Dwight and Deron have had this planned and are willing to do what it takes.

we’ll see.

by Dopeness on Jan 4, 2012 11:07 AM EST up reply actions

we have yet to hear that Howard has said that he will only sign an extension with the Nets, and the fact that LA is still a possibility kind of makes this questionable. Or are you just consciously ignoring the fact that the Lakers could legitimately throw a wrench in this plan?

by MrDollarBills on Jan 4, 2012 11:10 AM EST up reply actions

i have to agree

Not only is LA still an option, Bynum has started off in beast mode. If he continues, and LA still wants Howard, and Orl ownership is still looking to stay competitive, a straight swap of Dwight for Bynum is not out of the realm of possibility. In his 3 games, Bynum has proven to be the 2nd best C in the league. Why would Orlando even consider anything the Nets have to offer.

Rookie starting

This a definite lose game, I’d be happy if we lost by 10. I mean i’m not sure why most of you are all up in arms about us losing, majority of your predictions without lopez had us losing a tough starting schedule. either way at least we get to see the rookie brooks start and see what he’s made of. may even increase his trade value if the deal with dwight is still even feasible.

Bynum having monster games in Lakers. Not looking good for us (although Lopez with a broken foot sort of nixed the deal in my mind). Only thing we can hope for is that the owners of the Magic aren’t too inclined to sending Dwight to the Lakers so they can win a championship….again. Still, with the way Bynum is playing lately it’s hard to not look at him being a solid piece in return for Dwight.

Looks like the Bynum out of LA wheels are already being greased. However, I was just talking to friends about how amazing it would be for D-Will and Dwight to come to Brooklyn and start their OWN legacy. We are arguably the worst team in the NBA right now. It would be admirable for them to do something gutsy and turn us around. But are they up for the challenge?

Bynum is playing himself into Orlando

He could actually be eager to get out of Kobe’s shadow and have his own team.

The question is if Howard’s willing to get under Kobe’s shadow until the guy retires.

by stenpoint on Jan 4, 2012 11:01 AM EST up reply actions

I still REALLY think it would be WAY too risky to base the future of your franchise on Andrew Bynum. He may be playing well now, but the guy is more injury prone than a 90 year old woman. I will be upset if Howard gets traded for Bynum, but when Bynum returns to his old ways of only playing an 8th of the season because he has a toothache it will serve Orlando right.

by KFM FITNESS on Jan 4, 2012 11:04 AM EST up reply actions

he's not injury prone

have someone crash directly in your knee cap and see if it doesn’t blow up. In reality, Bynum’s injuries were not caused because of him. He stayed healthy most of last season, and is in better shape this season. If he stays healthy through March, especially in this condense season, Magic will take him in a heartbeat.

Trade, on course to be completed Wednesday, would send Speights to Grizz, Xavier Henry to Hornets and furnish Philly with two future picks

yep

Obviously we are severely short-handed, and this could easily be a blowout. but I like what I’ve seen from Brooks so far and am looking forward to watching him play tonight with some added pressure. He doesn’t seem like the type to shy away from the opportunity either.

Also we still have Gaines, James, Okur, Morrow. And the team won’t lay down, so it should be watchable to a degree.

Gaines is definitely better handling the point than Farmar.

Farmar is an off the bench shooting guard. It worked out last season and I don’t see a reason why they can’t go back to it.

I've been impressed with Gaines actually

He looks like a player that knows he has the full confidence of his coach.

Gaines is better defensively

and Farmar is a better shooter & probably has a little better court vision.
One shouldn’t play over the other, but both need to play, or at least we need to try Farmar to see if he can give us anything on offense, b/c we’re sorely lacking.

by CurlyBeast on Jan 4, 2012 12:03 PM EST up reply actions

Gaines

I have no problem with him starting Gaines in absence of D-Will, he’s been pretty good this year. He’s probably not as good of a passer as Farmar but his assists have been up this year and he’s a decent scorer and good rebounder for his size. He also has the 2nd best net on court/off court +/- on the team.

FYI, Avery told Deron he wouldn't be playing
"It’s not my ribs, it’s the muscle – obliques," Williams explained. "It’s pretty sore. Coach and (the trainer) thought it was best for me to sit out. If I got hit on it again, it wouldn’t be good.
"We’ll see how it goes. I woke up this morning and it was a little more sore than yesterday. I thought it would be better today."

He and Dwight have a pact to play together somewhere. And Dwight may have even told his agent and the Magic “Nets or nothing”.

Just wondering what happens around the trade deadline when won’t be in the playoffs and the Magic are asking Dwight if they can just send him to LA instead for Bynum.

Rose just got 250 million over 10 years from Nike.

I’m feeling more and more confident all the time that the Nets are going to play this season out, trade a Top 3 pick to the Orlando Magic, possibly with Brook Lopez OR Kris Humphries, and sign and trade Dwight Howard to the Nets for a 4 year, 76 million dollar deal.

Howard will sign a huge deal with Adidas if he goes to Brooklyn. I think he wants to play with Deron in Brooklyn.

If you have Deron & Dwight, we need a star wing player. We’d have a lot of flexibility.

there is no way you can justify that with stats or anything else. It's not a guarantee with teh Heat either

fact is they have the same weaknesses they had last year; no center and no point guard. I do think they’re the favorites, but don’t think the Bulls or Thunder will lie down and let them win.

also I don’t buy this asterisk crap. every team has the same shortened schedule and preparation time, the champion is the champion.

The thing is, the Heats don't need a good C or PG

Lebron and Wade command the ball way to much for a PG to be efficient, and Bosh is now bigger, stronger, and better. They made it to the finals last season with an incomplete team, and now there much better than last season IMO.

by mytoemytoe on Jan 4, 2012 12:23 PM EST reply actions

I might be the only one

Who doesnt liek a dwight and lopez combo.

Uh, didn’t you just agree with me? Making you not the only one?

???

lol i thought that

after i replied…i guess we’re the only 2..its not as good as it sounds.

I would love it

think about it, how much different is it than Gasol+Bynum? they made it work

by sheepareevil on Jan 4, 2012 12:39 PM EST up reply actions

Gasol can guard 4s

I dont see brook or dwight effectively guarding 4s

by 1stnamelastname on Jan 4, 2012 12:40 PM EST up reply actions

Yep, Gasol is surprisingly quick for such a big guy, Lopez gets his offense done with a soft touch on his shot.

by mytoemytoe on Jan 4, 2012 12:41 PM EST up reply actions

Totally different. Lopez is slow, Gasol is quick.

The big picture is that Prokhorov has already promised Williams that he’ll be the next Prime Minister of Russia

LOL with what, a fishing line?

Why?

The man left a perennial playoff team to retire. He has nothing to prove. Why would he come out of retirement to rebuild a horrible team? lol That’s just stupidity.

Hey guys, it's been a while since I've stopped by.

I really feel for you with all these injuries you’ve had in the past few weeks, as a Portland fan, I know what it’s like more than most anybody.

I just wanted to drop by and comment about MarShon Brooks whom I had severe reservations about and was not buying into the hype that you guys seemingly thrust upon him ever since he was drafted, but after looking at his stats… wow…

Per 36 stats: 23ppg, 6rpg, .547 TS% and a PER of 25.0. I know it’s a small sample size, but I’m willing to jump on the bandwagon and state that you guys certainly got the steal of the draft.

The smarter you are, the more likely you are to be tripping balls at any given moment.
