Shelden Williams "Ouch" Moment

It's getting a lot of attention with some calling it the early favorite for NBA Photo of the Year and others seeing it as nothing more than another indication of the Nets' long-running status as a basketball joke: Julio Cortez's great photograph of a ball hitting Shelden Williams square in the face following what was a thunderous dunk.

Lost in all the merry-making is that the dunk in the second half of the Nets game vs. the Pacers was off a nifty pass from Deron Williams and one hell of a one-hand slam.

He missed EVERY SHOT, including putback dunks. When the ball finally went in the basket for him, things STILL didn’t go his way, which is the story behind the Nets. Even with good moves, something bad always seems to happen

Only negative press

Because he’s wearing a Nets uniform. It’s so sad that the Nets get criticized by EVERYONE, EVERYWHERE! lol

This is a common occurrence when dunking.

I hear you loud and clear...

but there have bee many joke franchises in the NBA.

The way the NBA is structured and the nature of the game itself seems to limit many teams from competing with the top teams.

How many teams in the NBA right now have never won a NBA championship ?

Los Angeles Clippers
Cleveland
Denver
Indiana
Memphis
Minnesota
New Jersey
New Orleans
Orlando
Phoenix
Toronto
Utah

Dallas never won until last year.

Hawks last won in 1958 and believe it or not the Kings in 1951, then known as the Rochester Royals.

Plus if you count teams like the Knicks that haven’t won a championship in almost 40 years you can see how tough it is to actually win a title in the NBA…

by M I K E on Jan 4, 2012 8:50 AM EST up reply actions

It's easier to make a joke about the Nets...

Because there are fewer fans around to defend them. The fact they’ve played second-fiddle to the Knicks in the metro area (and have been largely irrelevant in spite of their location) has made them an easy target. Hopefully, that all changes soon.

But outside of one very awesome trade for Jason Kidd, not very much has gone right… They lost Dr. J because of the Knicks (another reason to utterly loathe that franchise). They didn’t draft Kobe (and in general, have done a very poor job finding players in the draft). They had one of the worst seasons in NBA history and didn’t even win the lottery.

Oh pissing blimey there's jam coming out of the walls!

But when we do have our rare runs of successful seasons…they are so exhilarating. Its EASY to be a Lakers fan…being a Nets fan is a true labor of love. All i want is to be competitive night in and night out with an exciting product on the floor. I dont care if we 5 stars or no stars. We need to recapture some of the Kidd era magic again.

My sentiments exactly.

The Nets shall rise again… eventually… and that victory will be like sweet ambrosia from the bosom of the basketball gods.

Agree 100%...It takes a special type of fan to root for the Nets...

epecially nowadays with NBA League Pass available.

The Nets biggest problem as you stated is not getting “lucky” with their draft picks.

Our best draft pick in over 30 years might be Brook Lopez. I love Lopez but he’s not in that elite category as Hakeem, Jordan, Magic, Duncan, LeBron, Wade, Durant etc…

Without that stud superstar leading the way it makes life in the NBA very difficult. We were lucky 10 years ago when Dallas gave us Kidd and then Toronto handed us VC but that was pure luck in my opinion.

The problem I have with the Nets right now, is that they have bought into that title contender or bust mentality. There have been some decent and entertaining Nets teams in the past not counting the Kidd years, so I too would also like to see a competitive, decent team on the court but Nets new ownership and mangement are shooting for the stars. I hope they succeed even though I would of preferred building through the draft.

The thing is we’re not even Loveable losers. In sports there are loveable losers like the Cubs, Lions…Cavs after the departure of Lebron. Its like we are the whipping boy of the sports world. Thats why we’re all true fans. When we lose- we suck and people hate on us for sucking. When we win- people hate on us for being second fiddle to the knicks despite two trips to the finals. Im OK with that. Thats why we’re true fans- and not some hot air filled bandwagon jumpers like across the river.

Don't know about Jersey but...

Can hardly get any news on the Nets in Brooklyn. Once they become BK Nets, NY media will be all over them.

Points is, big market team usually do better.

by Zartan on Jan 4, 2012 10:19 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

this happens all the time

when you dunk the ball you get hit in the face a lot. I don’t see why they are making a big deal about it… i think its more that the photo was at the exact moment it smashed his face.

by Js Mayhew on Jan 4, 2012 9:20 AM EST reply actions

This happens to every player

This is why Jordan use to dunk with his head down so it hit the top of his head and not his face.

It's best to just avoid ESPN as much as possible.

Hollinger and Kharpertian are worth your time but that’s about it.

Middle of the Pack

Broussard ( He gives the Nets love..sometimes)
Chad Ford
Steven A.

Bottom

Ric Bucher
Chris Sheridan. Worst. Ever.

Berger is also top pack..

he seriously is. Everyone hates on him for his Deron/Hamburger stuff. He is very reliable. Read his tweets for the past few months. Very accurate

as an aside.. breaking rumors is a 2 sided thing

We all want trade rumors. They are fun to discuss. We want media sources that give us trade rumors.

Now.. trade rumors are usually leaked for a reason.. someone has an agenda to leak them. Plus, the same sources we like for leaking the rumor, we then trash for being inaccurate.

When I went up for a dunk

five years ago, the ball would hit the rim and give the opponent a fast break…

I dunked once on a real 10" though, and I’m 5’8! Now, if only I was 7’8, I would play in the NBA!

Dunking is very entertaining...

but way overrated in terms of the game itself.

I love players who are wide open and then just take the easy layup…Smarter play.

I sometimes wonder how much wear and tear the knees take on those players who are always going for the monster slam ?

by M I K E on Jan 4, 2012 10:00 AM EST up reply actions

Yup

Jumpers knee, Kobe , Jordan , Vince , me :).

Jumping too high is not good.

Plenty of wear and tear

I’m 28 now, and I can’t walk normal, and have daily pain.

At the age of 22, I played soccer mondays, wednesdays, thursdays and saturday or sunday – played basketball tuesday and friday, and did fitness/strength every second day.

Big mistake…

But hey – BROOKLYN NETS NBA CHAMPIONS 2013!

NBA is greedy and stupid. Wait till one of the superstars goes down not named Deron.

This season is a joke…Same thing happened in 1998.

nothing wrong with that.

people should be laughing at the other team. if he’s such a joke, why is he dunking it so hard on your sorry -
