Game 7 - Nets @ Celtics - Wednesday, January 4, 7:30 PM

The Nets go into Boston's Garden Wednesday with a five-game losing streak and without Brook Lopez and (probably) Kris Humphries. Not a recipe for success, particularly since the Celtics will have a full cast, including Paul Pierce and Jermaine O'Neal, both of whom has lost games to injuries recently.

Boston (3-3) started slowly because of those injuries but Pierce looked good in his last game. Pierce contributed season highs of 21 points and eight rebounds, and rookie Greg Stiemsma had 13 points and seven boards in 21 minutes. Stiemsma is a D-League recruit who has filled in admirably.

The Nets are shooting a league-low 38.4% from the floor with only one game above 40% this season. One side story: MarShon Brooks will be going up against the team that drafted him, then traded his rights immediately to the Nets. The game concludes the Nets' six games in eight day stretch. Next week, they go out West.

they can actually start shooting a decent % from the field

wouldnt mind going after cousins

Full force. We need some1 like that… He’s the next next thing to dwight, and leaves. Us room to sign a starting 3

speaking before you think can have severe consequences, however doing it in reverse can have beautiful results!

by Mike28Live on Jan 4, 2012 7:24 AM EST via mobile reply actions

If Cousins could be included in a trade for Howard, it would be worth it.

ORL not looking to rebuild, so Cousins would be an asset.
Is there a 30 day period before Cousins could be traded?

But can’t give up Brooks for Cousins. You don’t trade your future starting SG for a gamble.
You trade MarShon for a sure thing, like Howard.

by jerry25 on Jan 4, 2012 7:33 AM EST up reply actions

The only way King acquires Cousins is if he has knowlege that ORL wants him in a trade. King is still all in for Dwight.

by power_njerz on Jan 4, 2012 7:46 AM EST up reply actions

Agreed

They won’t give him away. They’d probably deal him for a sane Lopez in a heartbeat, but I don’t think we take that gamble.

by TheNetsFan on Jan 4, 2012 10:17 AM EST up reply actions

If Cousins did well with Nets, then ORL would be interested. ORL wants to win now.

There would have to be a risk involved, but you couldn’t include MarShon in trade.

Is there a 30 day window before Nets could trade Cousins?
SAC may wait at least 1 month before trading Cousins, unless things get really bad in SAC.

Not to spoil anybody's hope on DH12

but Bynum is killing it after his return putting up DH12 like numbers. Magic surely would want him straight up. That is bad for Nets. Our luck suggests that he will continue this high level of play without going down with injury and would return to his injury-self once he is traded. Nets never catch a break.

But what you don’t say is that the Lakers and Jim Buss migh be unwilling to let Bynum go even for Howard.

by valdu08 on Jan 4, 2012 7:44 AM EST up reply actions

Not happening without guarantee of Howard staying in LA.

Not happening before monitoring Bynum’s knees by early March.

Even Cousins may be more valuable than Bynum come March, if Bynum’s knees act up before then.
Bynum+Gasol or no interest from ORL.

by jerry25 on Jan 4, 2012 7:46 AM EST up reply actions

LA was one of DH12's prefered destinations

so this is real. Till King’s say that they are willing to trade Cousins, that issue is as current as DH12.

As I said, with Net’s luck, Bynum would continue to play in this level and his knee would hold up. Right now he is even better than DH12, scoring, rebounding and blocking shots.

LA would still trade him if Magic wants him straight up with some fillers. They have to be stupid not to trade for DH12.

If he is playing this well why would the Lakers trade him? He is cheaper than Dwight and they are trying to move Gasol for Love.

by power_njerz on Jan 4, 2012 7:45 AM EST up reply actions

totally agree

Dwight only said the Lakers and Mavs to give Orlando some bargaining power. And besides. Buss came out and said that it would be stupid to trade 2 all-stars for 1.

If Bynum continues at this rate (and I bet you anything he doesn’t, he’s simply on better rest than the rest of his team) then they will want to keep him.

When Bynum is healthy, heis better than both Lopez and Cousins

They issue is his health. Right now he is healthy and putting up better numbers than DH12.

not true at all

Bynum is hot right now b/c he’s more rested than his aging team. Lopez also has hot streaks too, and yet Lopez doesn’t have the luxury of playing next to Kobe, Pau, Artest, and Odom to help take the defenses off of him.

by Murse Mike on Jan 4, 2012 8:16 AM EST up reply actions

Once again there is "better" and "more valuable".

Lopez and Bynum have health issues. Bynum also has an attitude issue. Hopefully Lopez proves his health before the trade deadline.

by jerry25 on Jan 4, 2012 8:07 AM EST up reply actions

Lopez didn't have health issues till December 22nd. 2011.

He was not injury prone like Bynum. Bigs go down once in a while. Of course we have to see how Lopez comes back from the injury and whether there are aftereffects. But Brook does not have a history of issues with injuries.

it’s just a matter of how long it takes him. We saw it last year with James. Even if Lopez is healthy after 7 weeks like his twin, he probably will need another 2-3 weeks to get his game back

Brooks needs a minimum

He needs a minimum of 15 shots per game. I would prefer he gets 20. He is efficient with the ball and if this team had better finishers i can see him easily putting up Vince#’s 20 5 5. That 21 and 7 he had against Indy came too easily for this kid not to get as many looks as possible.

by power_njerz on Jan 4, 2012 8:15 AM EST reply actions

minimum 15 FGA? You're kidding right?

He’s only ever had 15 or more once in his career. That’s a pretty bold statement considering all the good scorers in the league that don’t get 15FGA per

by Murse Mike on Jan 4, 2012 8:20 AM EST up reply actions

Brooks is already averaging 11 shots in 21 minutes

If he becomes a 30-minute player, he’s likely to take 15 shots

+1

brooks needs to shoot all the time. not because he deserves the shots but because he’s the only guy who can possibly fill the role of the #1 option on the offense

I kno this has nothing to do with the thread.

But… I don’t understand the “we are not getting Dwight” comments. All of a sudden because the Nets are play horribly we feel we have no shot? Lopez is hurt, yes, but if he isn’t traded to LA where else would he go? Is he staying in Orlando? Or do you guys really think hell be a Hawk? IMO its still LA or Brooklyn. If Dwight wants Brooklyn he’ll be here

I absolutely HATE watching this team so far this year

But AGAIN if we just simply make open shots like we should be, we’ll be on the winning side again. Also against the Pacers everyone was horrible aside from DWill and MarShon and was in the game for about 3 quarters while giving up many offensive rebounds and our role players ruining almost every pass they received from DWill. We are a bad team, going to remain a bad team until we get Hump and Lopez back, but this team should beable to be in close games if we just pick up our shooting percentages

by nwkiddnj on Jan 4, 2012 8:23 AM EST reply actions

Open shots?

Not a problem. We have sharp shooters with names like…
Shootin’ Shawne and AMMO!
ahem.

Oh and DWILL was still pretty horrible btw… his handle, where and how he delivers the ball and some his shots make me really think I’m right that that hand/wrist suffered some kind of damage in that injury/surgery.
While I think he’s a bit overrated, he is much better than what we are seeing…

One good thing about the condensed schedule this year...

is that with so many games being played, almost every night it seems, we have no time to dwell on our lastest loss. Plus this season will be over before we know it.

Lockout / strike seasons are always bogus anyway.

I have no illusions of making the playoffs this year and I don’t mind the losing as long as we develop some chemistry on this team and our young players improve.

Plus I’m looking forward to a healthy Brook Lopez making his return.

Other then that I will try and sit back and enjoy the ride…

by M I K E on Jan 4, 2012 9:12 AM EST reply actions

Let me tell everyone

Dwight Freaking Howard is one of the best players in the NBA and any team would do anything to get him. If you can get him with a straight up swap with some picks and fillers, you do it no matter who you are trading him for unless that player is LBJ, Kobe, Wade, Durant or Rose. So LA would absolutely trade Bynum for DH12 even Bynum is putting up better numbers than DH12.

I don’t know why people still argue about this. We have to worry about LA and Bynum. That is a fact.

reasons:
1) Celtics not as dominant up front as many other teams we faced (but still pretty good)
2) the NBA is crazy this year.. anything can happen…
3) Deron and Brooks will start to play better… at some point Avery will find some semblance of a team that at least hustles and competes

Chris Mannix had some interesting tweets regarding Bynum

said he is not injury prone.. his last knee injury was a fluke where Kobe ran into him.

and said 21 points, 22 rebounds, 3 blocks.. anyone think he can’t be a franchise player.

by orangeeater on Jan 4, 2012 9:37 AM EST reply actions

point is..

Bynum is much more highly regarded than Lopez.

Honestly, if Dwight still wants out at the deadline.. there is a chance (I think) Orlando deals Dwight for Bynum and the Mavs #1 pick

There is also a chance that the Lakers decide to keep Bynum in the end and decide Howard isnt worth it. (and one can argue that is the right move… )

No question Bynum has had an amazing first few games but

it’s premature for Mannix to proclaim Bynum’s no longer injury-prone. After all, in the last four seasons, Bynum has averaged 31 missed games each year, including 28 missed last year. He’ll need to show for at least a few years that he can make it to most of the games before Bynum shakes off the injury-prone label.

by stenpoint on Jan 4, 2012 10:08 AM EST up reply actions

true

but now Lopez has an injury history too… and as someone (mannix? i forgot who) said… big men with a foot fracture may not be a good thing

At this point, Lopez has proven to be more reliable with his health

but in NBA trades, the winner, is the team that gets the best player

I haven't weighed in much being out of town

But I finally got to watch a few games and we are not as bad offensively as we would appear to be. It’s hard to imagine Morrow or Deron shooting this bad, as well as Shawne Williams who was good from 3 last year.

I’m thinking it will begin to click, as it seemed to in the Pacers game…. But it will mean nothing if we do not defend better. It’s been very very active at times, and others just totally missing spots leaving the other team wide open constantly from 3.

Overall though, the team appears to me to be playing hard. It really devastating about Lopez. I think we’d have 3-4 wins if he was playing right now.

It’s all about defense. Without defense we do t stand a chance against any team.
