Lopez Runs, But Nets Will Wait On Brooks

Photo

Unfortunately, news regarding the players who are currently on the Nets' roster is entirely focused on injury updates. And its mostly bad news.

The one good thing we learned on Tuesday is that Brook Lopez ran for the first time since having surgery on his right foot. Avery Johnson wouldn't give an update on MarShon Brooks, but Deron Williams hinted Brooks won't return from his broken toe until around the same time that Lopez gets back.

Johnson wouldn't offer an update on DeShawn Stevenson (right knee) either, and said that Mehmet Okur had a "procedure" on his ailing back. Okur may return for Saturday's game in New York or Monday's game vs. the Bulls.

Only 10 Nets will be available Tuesday in Indiana, and Larry Owens will likely get the start at small forward.

I’ve been saying (with little actual basis) that the 15th against Memphis could make sense for Lopez with the 3 day break before the game. Granted I know nothing, but I’d say it’s safe to say that’s the earliest

It's hard to fathom, really

Dude crouched down a bit, so let’s say for argument’s sake Weis measured 6’ 5" while crouching. 6’5" = 77 inches. Is 77 inch vertical jump even possible? It’s mind-blowing.

Greatest dunk of all-time, but...

You have to subtract the length from foot-to-crotch (and consider the push-off with the hand) to calculate the vert.

it's not even about how high he jumped for me

I mean obviously jumping over a 7 footer is a huge part of the dunk. it’s just that he received the ball with momentum going towards the basket, saw a big man in his way, and DID NOT CARE. he was dunking the ball, and he made Weiss duck out of HIS way. he could have easily dribble around him, but why do that when you can jump over him?

I take that over Griffin's dunk, too.

But that takes into account the entire play, with the dribble around the back.

I think it's fine.

by NetsMets4Life on Jan 31, 2012 1:26 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t.

If we’re talking about degree of difficulty: there are plenty of dunks better than Griffin’s (including LeBron’s of Lucas). However, if you sit me down and just have me watch some of these dunks and gauge how good they are by how I react (uncontrollable twitching, jumping up and looking around like you’ve just seen a crime, searching for someone to show it to; just the overall excitement of the dunk) I’d say that Griffin’s is top-15, probably even top-10.

by Dopeness on Jan 31, 2012 1:29 PM EST up reply actions

See, I had a different reaction.

The Griffin dunk, I think my initial reaction was a “HOT DAMN.” I wasn’t losing my mind, like so many other people seem to be doing. This accurately describes my reaction to the Carter dunk above:

His one on Mozgov was better because he just elevated vertically.

With this one, it was sort of horizontal and sideways around Perkins. And let’s be honest — he didn’t even make Perkins budge an inch. And he just sort of spiked the ball through the hoop rather than dunked it. Dominique, MJ, VC, Pippen, JR Smith, and JRich all have dunks better than this.

Fair enough; however:

What do the two dunks shown where the defender falls on the floor have in common? Both were on a fast-break and both feel because there was some extraneous motion (whether it was a knee kick or a thrust of the hands) that had little to do with the dunk.

As I said earlier, it’s all a matter of difference in taste and opinion. I’m not one to overreact to recent players (if I don’t say so myself) and lose sight of their context in history; yet I still feel that Griffin’s dunk was better than the Pippen one and will stand as a top-15 (possibly top-10) dunk of all-time.

by Dopeness on Jan 31, 2012 3:13 PM EST up reply actions

To each his own

But to me a vicious, posterizing dunk of this type has to embarrass the guy getting dunked on. Like in a hip-hop battle, it’s not about who has the best rhyme scheme or whatever, it’s about belittling your opponent, taking him down a notch, making him feel like less of a man. It’s not about lyrical technique. IMO, you’re looking at the dunking equivalent of lyrical technique whereas I’m looking at which dunk most disrespected the guy getting dunked on. Perkins didn’t even look shook or anything — he’s always has that intense look on his face. And he didn’t even budge an inch. The Pippen dunk took Ewing’s manhood. You can tell because Pippen did a spread eagle on top of Ewing and Ewing took offense. Perkins didn’t even look offended.

This ESPN articel drives me nuts

The disrespect for our team at BSPN is staggering.

1.There is not 1 mention of the Nets in the whole article though we are his #1 choice.
2. One of the writers is a total moron.

Danny Nowell, Magic Basketball: Dwight is genuinely conflicted about whether he wants to leave, but I think this “prettiest girl at the prom” routine leaves the Magic little choice but to deal him. None of the rumored deals, without adding a third team, include the youth I’d like to see the Magic get, but they may be forced to take what they can.

So apparently Brook and Brooks are not good enough youth. Ok. Everyone is entitled to his opinion. But then he goes on to say in the same article.

by valdu08 on Jan 31, 2012 2:12 PM EST reply actions

Stephen Jackson part

Stephen Jackson to New Jersey (Proposed trade)
Jackson got a DNP on Monday night and the Bucks seemed perfectly fine without him, as wings Carlos Delfino, Shaun Livingston and Mike Dunleavy are of roughly comparable quality to Jackson. The problem is that he has a terrible contract, which means he can only be traded for another equally terrible contract.

However, it appears there are several different workable combinations with New Jersey — which is convenient given that Jackson and Dwight Howard have talked of wanting to play with each other. Even without Howard, the Nets have a glaring hole on the wings now that MarShon Brooks is out with a toe injury, and Jackson could help fill it.

Moreover, all these deals can be done now, with no March 1 limitations on the key players. The crux of the deal would be trading Jackson for Jordan Farmar and Johan Petro, all of whom have two years left on their deals and at roughly equal money.

Farmar has gone gangbusters of late but is difficult to use with Deron Williams and Sundiata Gaines, which is where part 2 of my deal comes in — Milwaukee sends back the bigger Beno Udrih and Jon Brockman, and the Bucks get Anthony Morrow and Damion James. James is out for the season and has an expiring contract; Morrow gives Milwaukee another deep shooter to round out the wing rotation. Udrih, meanwhile, is more easily used in two-guard sets with Williams. As for Brockman, he fills the frontcourt void that Petro’s absence creates.

Dwight Howard to the Nets
Unless the Lakers are willing to do a Andrew Bynum-Pau Gasol combo, this has become the best deal on the board. I say “become” because this wasn’t the case a couple of months ago. However, MarShon Brooks’ emergence has given the Nets another tantalizing piece to put into a Howard deal. He is out with a broken toe but that shouldn’t bother the Magic, who would be making this deal for the long term.

Because of Kris Humphries’ involvement it couldn’t be consummated until March 1 and can’t be done on the Trade Machine, but the deal is Dwight Howard, Chris Duhon and Hedo Turkoglu to New Jersey for Brooks, Humphries, Brook Lopez and Mehmet Okur. The Nets could actually get a $3.1 million trade exception for Lopez as well, while the Magic would get one worth $3.2 million for Duhon.

In addition, New Jersey can include four first-round picks: Its own picks in 2012, 2014 and 2016, and a pick owed to it by Houston from the Terrence Williams trade. It’s the best way to get Orlando out of its salary-cap mess and give it the pieces to rebuild, and obviously it puts New Jersey in great shape with a Howard-Williams core.

MarShon, it was nice while it lasted. Hump, you deserve all your future success. Brook, play closer to the rim!

A Dwight Howard to the Nets trade is a trade for the future, not just for a championship run in 2012, but a run in 2013, 2014, 2015.

Trade whoever you need to get him. Get the Deron Williams/Dwight Howard core and build from there.

by mytoemytoe on Jan 31, 2012 2:38 PM EST reply actions

With that said, I doubt we give up EVERYTHING that Hollinger projects. I think he is simply projecting that deal as the “home run” deal for Orlando, because I don’t see us giving up that many picks in addition to 3 key position players.

by mytoemytoe on Jan 31, 2012 2:39 PM EST up reply actions

Hollinger also proposes these trades:

Stephen Jackson for Petro and Farmar (I saw that here as well, I think from NetsKING)

Beno Udrih and Jon Brockman for Anthony Morrow and Damion James

by mytoemytoe on Jan 31, 2012 2:42 PM EST reply actions

The core of the Nets by the end of trade deadline would be Deron Williams, Stephen Jackson, DeShawn Stevenson, Nobody Jones and Dwight Howard

by mytoemytoe on Jan 31, 2012 2:43 PM EST reply actions

I'm in the "get Howard at all costs" camp, but that would put the Nets in a bad spot.

Just a sign of what being on the Nets does to players:

I know a lot of people here dislike Bill Simmons — I believe it’s because he likes to make fun of the Nets — but Deron Williams went from a superstar to merely an “all-star.”

LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Derrick Rose, Dwyane Wade, Dwight Howard, Dirk Nowitzki, Kobe Bryant (superstars); Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook, Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Love, LaMarcus Aldridge (franchise guys); Rajon Rondo, Blake Griffin, Steve Nash, Manu Ginobili (entertaining All-Stars); Tony Parker, Deron Williams, Paul Pierce, Rudy Gay, Chris Bosh, Zach Randolph, Marc Gasol, Pau Gasol, Amar’e Stoudemire, Andrew Bynum (All-Stars)

Read more: http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/7519970/time-change

Darren Collison and George Hill for D-Will?

Some clown on BSPN.com that I’ve never heard of before named Austin Link just suggested that, after the Nets “realize” that D-12 and DWill is leaving, we should trade D-Will to Indy for Darren Collison and George Hill. Why in the world would we do that? I’d rather lose D-Will for nothing than get rid of him in a distressed sale.

Where does BSPN find these jokers?

The trade: Darren Collison and George Hill to New Jersey for Deron Williams

Collison and Hill are both quality young players, something New Jersey is sorely lacking. Once the Nets realize Dwight Howard isn’t coming — and, as a result, Williams is leaving — they’ll need to get something for their star point guard. The Pacers would love Williams to stay for more than his one remaining contract year, but even if he leaves it still adds cap room for the team to pursue Indiana native Eric Gordon. As an added bonus, the Trade Machine says this deal will result in more wins for both teams.

Then you walk away again then they lower it again. Evenually their product is worth pooo ( dont want to get a warnig) they call you back and give it to you for FREE.

Good to see you back
I missed these witty pics.

If I can just hide, the sinner inside, and keep him denied.
How sweet life would be, if I could be free, from the sinner in me.

People on this board keep saying the Brooks must go in any Dwight trade, but

why should we add any pieces to the original deal when OTIS messed up?

Brooks, expiring and draft picks should be enough for Dwight especially after OTIS and ORL made their situation worse. Why should the NETS suffer for their incompetence.

I feel they're losing leverage by the game.

But I still think wthis will be a 3 team trade.

If straight up – Lopez, Memo, Morrow, Farmar, 2 picks

Depth

http://www.cbssports.com/nba/teams/depth-chart/DEN/denver-nuggets

look at how deep that team is…thats without JR Smith, Chandler and K-mart….

Thats what we could be plus D-will…

Dont gut the farm for a superstar.

Agreed

We can give him some steak and pork chops but no gutting the farm

Can't believe I'm writing this

at this point, I wouldn’t mind trying out JR Smith and Chandler for rotaion and depth. they both would be fine playing with Deron And Dwight.

I mean I dont think the Nuggets are a finals contender right this second…but theyre basically one player away at this point…And they could contend up there with OKC for a while with this roster.. Especially with that Afflalo/Lawson/Gallo/Nene core. Who knows how good Gallo will actually be…hes still only 23.

He might make a AS reserve in next few years

Will never start over Durant and Griffin though. There’s this guy Love too.

I really believe in holding on and developing homegrown talent…and not shipping it off. Heres Hoping March 15th passes and dwights not traded…

by Pure baller15 on Jan 31, 2012 4:25 PM EST via mobile reply actions

ORL dont deserve

Brooks anyway.

Cowards.

They will come begging soon or their ego will be their demise by keeping Dwight out of spite.

I keep saying Orlando had their chance to surround Dwight with talent for over 7 years….Derons been here a year and we’re already in the conversation for adding another superstar piece. So I have little to no compassion for the Magic fans…the Cav fans get some compassion just because Lebron did it in such an obnoxious way. But if you want your big fish to stay you besta make sure that big fish is well fed…

by lezosamis on Jan 31, 2012 4:40 PM EST reply actions

really this wouold be my veryy very best offer

Without involding any other teams

Brook lopez
4 first round picks
Okur
And we take back hedo

Thats would be the best of the best for me
I dont know why everyone trying to give up everything when i whole hearted believe that for dwight its nets only

by Pure baller15 on Jan 31, 2012 4:40 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Yes I think we only need to give them something better than what they would get for "rental"

I’m not even sure if we absolutely have to Brook to get him. But I will take added assurance.

by mvmt84 on Jan 31, 2012 4:43 PM EST up reply actions

if the rumor about dwight telling LA he's going to test free agency is true

i wouldn’t even give them that much. who’s going to offer more just for a rental?

excuse my bad english please
