Malone: Sloan Quit Because Jazz Backed D-Will
In an interview with Brad Rock of the Deseret News, Karl Malone said Jerry Sloan quit because Jazz ownership wouldn't go along with Sloan's desire to suspend Deron Williams for insubordination.
Rock writes Malone told him, "Jazz CEO Greg Miller and general manager Kevin O'Connor failed to back up Sloan's wishes to suspend Williams, so he quit." But Rock notes, "if Williams was more valuable than Sloan, why trade him a week after Sloan quit?"

Still don’t think Deron drove him out.
NI once wrote something about how the Miller family’s cost cutting didn’t thrill Sloan.

whole slew of decisions
after the father died: failure to match on Wes Mathews, no offer to Korver, no offer to Boozer, salary dump of Maynor, off the top of my head.

Seems there was a combination of things that led up to both drill being traded and Sloan quitting.
Who cares! We got Dwill!

Underling factor
Dwill doesn’t play like one the guys!! He plays like he’s boss and $#!+ don’t stink.
Sloan leaving showed the new era of nba for what it is(heartless boys league/ tasteless owners) .
It’s unfortunate I grew up with the NBA at its best, now I don’t know how to turn away from this crapy product.
When the last time any of you cared about the finals if it wasnt your team? Not saying we didn’t watch but how do you feel about the lakers championship? How about the celtics? Back in the day, pacer knick playoff game in any round was better than what we get in the finals now-a-days.

Seriously?
The Heat vs Mavs finals last year was incredible. Not just the story of ‘Big three’ model vs. team building model but also in terms of level of play, it was right up there.
That's why I left them out ;)
So you got me there but you the world wanted to see the new era get beat! Against the odds , hard work and adversity . I doubt you enjoyed the game, odds are you were happy for the Mavs.

I think the most telling part is....
That Sloan wanted to suspend Deron Williams. If a legendary coach wants to suspend him then what does that say about Deron?

what does it say about Sloan that he quit in mid-season without warning?
two sides to every story.

it also says something about Malone
why the heck is he talking about that stuff if he really knows? and also, is Malone really a credible source- that guy did leave the Jazz to go play for the Lakers remember.
Really, what does it say about BK
As BK was able not only to shift gears quickly after losing out on the Melo sweepstakes, but was able to pry Deron (if we are to believe any of these claims) after ownership sided with him and gave him a vote of confidence over their iconic, HOF coach. His great sell job looks even more stellar.
Come on dude
If you wanted to ban someone for ripping you with all the nasty words they wanted but netsdaily says you can’t do anything , how do you take that. Better yet if you are a manager and your coworkers couldn’t be disciplined because the owner said so but the results fall on your head, what then?
How many years did Sloan coach ? He should have been able to do what he wants with who ever. Sure you get a good player but you get LeBron , heartless stat guys.
Deron is simply not as good as most make him out to be. I’m following the hype but haven’t seen anything special about this dude! What have you seen?

He quit in mid-season

Sloan was a Dictator and expected to get his way on all decisions.
Before the father died, Sloan ruled. Then things changed and Sloan didn’t want to be part of a losing team, that he wasn’t in full control of.
In New Jersey, DWill, Avery and Billy all have near equal control, and get along pretty good.
lets be real all indications were
Utah went rebuilding mode and D Will definetly didnt liked it. 27 no finals no hope!!! Bosh Melo LBJ CP Melo D12 why not D Will should try some other team

weird dynamic Coach v Player who do you keep?
Say you have a superstar that isn’t happy because the team is not winning. This superstar is on the last year of his contract and may not stay if the team isn’t winning. Who do you get rid of in order to have a winning team and keep your star and still be profitable?
Wouldnt have got rid of Sloan who was a coach there for 20 years, but if it was here def Avery...idn if the franchise would do it though since they are in love with Avery that bum

i think Proky is more committed to Deron and winning than he is to Avery… the man doesn’t mess around

If D-Will really does that...
…it means Jerry Sloan is not great after all? Come on, one of the best coaches who mastered the game and handling players (such as an asshole Malone) be driven out of the door just like that? Clashes in locker room do happens. And I think Jerry with all his toughness, will not do that.
Deron Williams, All Star

Only in this era can you go out to play a pickup game a a guy gets to choose the first two players.

Bottom line.. Utah wanted to get rid of both of them...
I believe utah felt it was time for change at the coaching position. Although sloan was a great coach, he never won it all. And his style of coaching was not conducive to today’s players. So utah let deon take the fall and be the reason why sloan quit.
then…
They got rid of deron because they didn’t think they could win with him as their main guy. So when BK came calling they saw the opportunity to start over and rebuild, and they jumped on the deal…
Say what you want, but utah was brilliant in this whole thing. They could have never fired sloan. The fans would have turned on them. So they just sat back and allowed Deron drive sloan crazy. When he came for help, they did nothing. They knew sloan wouldnt coach under those conditions. So they let sloan fire himself. And dwill is the one who took the heat for it. Even though they traded Dwill the very next week, it still doesnt matter. People still blame him.
That was Genuis!!!
Sloan never won it all because they faced the best team in NBA history
no team gave Jordan a harder time to win his championships than the Jazz.
Sloan was a good coach... But the Jazz wanted a change.
They felt they couldn’t win with him. They lost to the bulls in 98. He lost his job in 2011. Sloan had a lot of time to win, and he didn’t. Other great coaches won during that 13 year span. Jackson, Brown, Popovich all won. But Sloan didn’t. He never even made it back to the finals. That’s what the Jazz were looking at.
What incentive is there for Malone to come out and say this. Especially now.

Rec'd for the articles...ooops I accidentally flagged. My bad
I’m usually a fan of Woj’s articles, but this one is pretty weak stuff for his standards. Way too many assumptions presented as fact about the team’s attitude towards Dwight as a leader. Although I think it is logical, but I was expecting some supporting quotes with the certainty of his claims.

Woj is so melodramatic
He’s great for breaking stories but I really hate his writing style
Ric Bucher is right on, about ORL waiting to see if Lopez will be worth trading for after the All Star break.

No expansion of list to include Clippers or Bulls, as others would like to believe, just because Howard “humored” them with a response. Truth is that if those teams game up significant talent to ORL,
And when I say that Broussard “embellishes” his reporting, I mean that he borrows material from others, including what is commonly known in the media, and presents it as part of the story as though it was all his info. Its hard to separate what is new and original. I recall when Broussard described the conversion in detail about an initial breakfast meeting between Amare and D’Antoni even thought Broussard wasn’t wasn’t invited.
Big Egos...
DWill is just as all the rest of the NBA stars, except for players like Boston’s Garnnett. There may be no I in team, but these guys are me first players. I like DWill’s game, but Jazz management should have listened to Jerry Sloan.
