If Cousins Available, Nets Interested?

Stefan Bondy is the latest writer to report that the Nets would be interested in trading for DeMarcus Cousins should the Kings decide to deal him. Bondy tweeted, "Nets are looking into trading for DeMarcus Cousins, according to a league source". But he added, "At this point, however, the Kings aren't ready to deal the center."

As Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Monday, Kings ownership wants to give things more one chance. "Several teams called Kings on DeMarcus Cousins today, and all told same thing: Not available. No way Kings give up so fast. Too talented". In the Kings 17-point loss Tuesday, Cousins came off the bench and shot 1-for-5 but grabbed eight boards.

They would want Lopez

We would laugh, but ultimately have nothing to offer. We’re not trading our #1 for him either.

by Jack Handy Jr on Jan 3, 2012 11:13 PM EST up reply actions

Why not?

He’s better than anyone the Nets will get being a middling team. And on the Nets, his stats will boom across the board and his trade value would go up, making him a valuable trade chip to repackage elsewhere in the deal for Dwight

actually it was Westphal that made all those statements

but Kings fans and North Cali people are confused as to why Petrie let those statements go public as if he wants Cousins gone

some think Westphal is trying to save himself for when the team has another losing season with little progress and blame it on the players he can.

its really perplexing. but we do know Cousins was always a hothead, Westphal is not a strong-willed coach, and as long as Evans in his current state is the face and end all team leader there will be no promise

they are dead last in assists and i dont see that changing for the time being

totally agree

Bynum/Gasol is definitely better than Lopez/Cousins – TODAY

But when Brook starts lighting things up when he gets back, and Gasol’s age starting to affect his play, Lopez and Cousins would be a killer front court for years to come, if Cousins could just learn to be a better teammate.

But also look at their salaries! Is a Bynum/Gasol frontcourt $30mil better than Lopez/Cousins? I think not

With that said, he is quite the risk. Potentially cancerous in the locker room.

So we lose Deron Williams

So we can keep three question marks (if we get Cousins) on the team.

Cousins-A head case and the situation in Sac could happen here
Lopez-Still young, but a foot injury on a center is always dicey
Brooks-Has talent but you can’t say he’s a superstar yet. And looks to go ISO too much.

vs.

yeah- but two of those players for Dwight is certainly possible

but all 3? that would be stupid, there is no other team that could possibly offer that much value for Dwight. Even the lakers giving up both Gasol and Bynum (which they supposedly wouldn’t do) isn’t that much value.

but we’re probably not getting cousins so… whatever….

Would love to get him

but I don’t think Sac is that dumb honestly to get rid of him this early in the game. Has a lot of potential, just needs to get his head on straight.

Only trade from King I’m hoping for in the meantime is him shipping out Farmar and somehow getting value out of it.

Too bad this guy isn't older and stable

He would help a lot right now if he was playing to his ability and helping us stay afloat. I hate to say it, but with enough incentive, I would trade Lopez for him.

Something like….

Lopez, Petro, Farmar
for
Cousins, Thompson, Salmons, Future #1

Deron / Gaines
Brooks / Morrow / Stevenson
Salmons / D.James / Shawne
Humphries / Thompson / Jordan
Cousins / Okur / Sheldon

I fully expected to be hazed for that one, but I doubt Sacramento would even do it.
But…We can still afford Dwight in the off-season or have potentially preferred assets if Orlando trades him. We’d be a much better team in the short term as Farmar, Petro and Lopez are all offering nothing.

This trade makes us 10x better thanks to Salmons and Thompson alone as we improve dramatically at SF.

But mainly, it’s done for Orlando. Clearly they do not like Lopez. That is problematic.

Absolutely right

As you can see Deron’s behavior, he means what he says. He doesn’t play around. Yes he’s moody. But when he says he will stay, he will stay. Utah didn’t gave him that chance. They just traded the guy. Honestly, with the Nets current state, he has all the rights to demand a trade. Nets roster situation decreases dWill’s stock. To remind everyone, Dwill is a pass-first PG. He’s capable of averaging 20/10. Don’t complain if he does not score a lot ala DRose or Westbrook. I hate those fans who don’t support a player having bad nights…

True that Bynum is way over his career rebound rate

But he’s a guy that grabbed 19% of available rebounds over 54 games and 1500 minutes last year. That’s a decent enough sample size to conclude that he will always be a better rebounder than Brook, at the very least

but how often does a team miss 55 shots? Bynum grabbed 20+ rebounds tonight which is good for a C but that’s also his job. So is Hump or Love better than Bynum because they have multiple 20+ rebounding games and can score? Sometimes I just feel you guys are ready to run instead of looking back when someone yells Fire

The Lakers have 2 7 footers

does that mean Gasol is not as good as Bynum or the other way around? Look at what Lopez has to play with in his career, and look at the load that’s been given to him to carry. Bynum is playing good now, but to say he’s better than Lopez right now is straight blasphemy. He doesn’t have the consistency or even the same load to carry as Lopez. He’s always been a 2nd or 3rd option, while Lopez has and was force to be #1 option.

Lopez plays for the Nets

The Nets suck at developing young talent.
If Brook was a laker he’d be dunking on people.
To be fair to Brook he is one of the best players at demanding the double team but no one has taught him how to pass it properly yet.
Bynum would not get a 20 20 game that easily if his doubled all game and had scrubs surrounding him.
Despite all this Brook has scored consistantly and still has plenty of room to improve.

Not looking good for the Nets

Bynum’s getting the 20-22 points we expect from Lopez and he’s not even the focus of the LA offense. Bynum can also get 8 rebounds in his sleep that we’re hoping from Lopez in a good year. Bynum could easily have a 20 and 12 season the way he’s going. It’s been only 3 games but who expects Lopez to put up the same 23 and 17 in that stretch.

His previous health issues remain a concern but LA only needs Bynum to be healthy at least through the mid-March trade deadline. Not looking good for the Nets.

by stenpoint on Jan 4, 2012 6:04 AM EST reply actions

Why?

……would the Lakers trade him for Howard if he keeps this up and stays healthy? I have read that the Laker owners LOVE Bynum

by ArmchairQb68 on Jan 4, 2012 6:33 AM EST up reply actions

LA would still definitely trade Bynum for Howard

It’s Dwight Howard, who’s still on another level. A 20 and 12 season will be great for Bynum but Howard’s been a regular 20-22 and 14-15 guy and the league’s best defensive player.

If anything, LA is trying to make the case that Bynum should be enough, that they don’t have to send Gasol too.

by stenpoint on Jan 4, 2012 6:55 AM EST up reply actions

Someone needs to ask Howard first.

Not so sure that Howard would want to go to LA any more. The glamor of LA may not be enough.
Howard would be a failure if he didn’t win a championship in his first season.
And even if he did, he would be behind Shaq, Chamberlain, Kareem and Magic.

If Howard doesn’t agree to stay on in LA, then LA won’t make any trade for Howard.

And what are the chances Bynum makes it to early March without his knees acting up?
That is why ORL would insist on Gasol + Bynum.

by jerry25 on Jan 4, 2012 7:09 AM EST up reply actions

its LA

Howard does need to verbally agree he’ll stay in LA for the Lakers to feel comfortable about trading Bynum. While we would hope Brooklyn is his only preferred destination, the fact is Howard has authorised trade talks with three possible destinations, and that includes LA. Once he’s traded to LA, he’ll be sucked into the glamor of the franchise and of course, they can offer more contract money, not to mention a similar if not greater potential for endorsements as Brooklyn. Don’t want to wish ill on anybody but only an injury could tarnish Bynum’s value now.

by stenpoint on Jan 4, 2012 7:17 AM EST up reply actions

ZERO chance LA would risk giving away talent without a guarantee Howard would stay.

And if LA was only offering Bynum, then NETS package would be much better, once Lopez was back.

Nets offering Lopez + Gerald Wallace(obtained with picks) + Morrow + Okur and taking back bad contracts.

Its Byum+Gasol or LA can forget about getting Howard.

by jerry25 on Jan 4, 2012 7:22 AM EST up reply actions

Nets fans are the only people who put lopez over bynum...

It’s cool to be bias and root for your guy over another. But we have to be smart minded basketball fans. How could the Magic be sold on lopez with bynum doing what he is doing?

The key to getting howard will not be lopez. It will be Marshon Brooks. If he continues to show that the can be a prolific scorer in the league, Orlando will want to deal with the nets. A package of Marshon, Lopez, and our 2012 (which is going to be a good one given our record), is far more attractive than Andrew Bynum.

Orlando will hold out til the last minute to do this deal. Why? so the nets can keep losing. The more the nets lose, the better the 2012 draft pick will be.

by aug93 on Jan 4, 2012 7:01 AM EST reply actions

Before the injury to Lopez, it was reasonable.

And if Bynum’s knees act up again, I can see Lopez being more valuable than Bynum once again, come early March, when it counts.

by jerry25 on Jan 4, 2012 7:04 AM EST up reply actions

Lopez is not more valuable because he has never put up numbers impressive for his position...

The lack of rebounding and toughness is a turn-off to teams. When talking about lopez, it’s always about potential…

by aug93 on Jan 4, 2012 7:06 AM EST up reply actions

Knowedgeable people (Otis), know that Lopez is an 8 rebound/game person (been there/done that), with upside to get 10+ rebounds as his 14 rebounds in preseason.

Knowledgeable people know why he did poorly this past season: Mono, lack of chance for conditioning, HUMP getting all the boards, lack of a DWill to push him, and calcium deposits in his arm, that hurt on contact.

Lopez was SOFT, but with the ability to be as tough as his brother. If you combined the best of Robin+Brook, you have the 2nd best center in the NBA.

But Brook will only have 1 month to prove himself. We shall see.

by jerry25 on Jan 4, 2012 7:14 AM EST up reply actions

Knowledgeable people realize you just made a million excuses for 1 player...

Mono, calcium deposits, Hump stole his boards (that has alwas ween the most lame excuse), lack of dwill pushing him… Are you serious? You are a million dollar paid proessional athlete and you need another man to push you?

Lopez is not a bad player. He is a decent-good one. But his ability is not attractive enough to get Howard. The "knowledgeable"people you speak of know that. that’s why we don’t have Howard. The “knowledgeable” people you speak of like sportscasters, writers and former NBA commentators know that because they say it.

by aug93 on Jan 4, 2012 7:31 AM EST up reply actions

And 8 rebounds a game is not attractive enough...

Not for Dwight Howard who is a rebounding, shot blocking maniac…

by aug93 on Jan 4, 2012 7:55 AM EST up reply actions

Bynum is overrated b/c he's on a good team

like Lopez in underrated b/c he’s on a bad one. It’s easy to put up 15ppg when teams are doubling Kobe and Pau, especially when Artest (I’m not calling him, a very violent man, World Peace) and Odom are on the floor too. Bynum never gets doubled – FACT

Lopez will prove to be a 20/10 guy on a team that actually has other threats, and some chemistry.

Bynum is also playing as a guy who just came back from a 1 week vacation on a team of old guys in a crazy schedule. His numbers will even out, especially when he gets injured again, and he will, with his body, increased minutes, and increased games per week.

And besides, even IF Bynum continues like he is AND somehow manages to stay healthy for the 1st time in his career, then LA is NOT going to trade him.

by Murse Mike on Jan 4, 2012 7:57 AM EST up reply actions

Bynum is also overrated b/c he's on a popular team

I’ve heard the media talk soooo much about JJ Hickson and sooo little about Brook Lopez. Why???

Lopez>>>>>>>>>>Hickson!!!

Only b/c Hickson played on the Cavs with Lebron, so everyone saw him play much more. And also Lebron made him look good, like many mediocre players look on a team with a superstar (Varejao, Mo Williams, Sasha Pavlovich, ‘Boobie’ Gibson’) Yet anyone who has seen both players play regularly knows Lopez is head and shoulders better, yet doesn’t get any credit b/c he’s on the Nets.

by Murse Mike on Jan 4, 2012 8:02 AM EST up reply actions

Lopez + Cousins + Hump front court.

That is what M I K E and I were calling for 1 1/2 years ago.
Cousins could get time at PF / Backup Center (once Brook comes back).
However Rod Thorn said that Cousins was a “Stone Cold Five”.

Now if we could trade Petro + Morrow for Cousins + 2015 1st round pick, that would be a no brainer.

How long after trading for Cousins could he be traded to Orlando?
If Cousins did well with Nets, his value could be > Bynum.

by jerry25 on Jan 4, 2012 7:02 AM EST reply actions

Teams with mobile and quick PF's would kill the Nets

Cousins and Lopez are too slow to play that position

by aug93 on Jan 4, 2012 7:04 AM EST up reply actions

And Nets would KILL those teams on Offense.

Nets still have Hump and Shawne or DJames to defend against those few cases, if needed.

by jerry25 on Jan 4, 2012 7:15 AM EST up reply actions

And Cousins is even more mobile than he was 1 1/2 years ago.

He is in great shape.

He was guarding Guards in college and stealing the ball from them. I think he can handle PFs.

Love has totally inflated numbers

much like David Lee with the Knicks, he stands around on defense waiting to get rebounds and has too much of a jump-shooting perimeter game. Don’t get me wrong, he’s really good, but he’ll never be the best player on a championship team, and he has no post game.

I Lopez can start putting up 10rpg, I’d rather have Lopez

by Murse Mike on Jan 4, 2012 7:51 AM EST up reply actions

I can't say that I blame Cousins too much

Yes he’s a headcase, but currently he’s stuck on a team that’s being build around the perimeter with basketball black holes in Evens, Thornton, and Jimmer. He’s only in his 2nd year, and it seems like he’s going to have to fight for a 50%rebounding percentage if he ever wants to touch the ball on offense and show the rest of the league what he can do.

Even if he wasn’t a head case, most guys in his place would probably feel miserable being a potentially dominant big man on a team of ball hogs

by Murse Mike on Jan 4, 2012 7:46 AM EST reply actions

The Kings, like the Magic, will wait until the trade deadline

when the offers become better.

If Howard is traded to LA, I can see the Nets going hard after Cousins with the package they have minus Lopez (or Brooks). Maybe Morrow and a couple of picks or something close to, but not as much as, the earlier package for Gerald Wallace.

Looking ahead, if the Howard project fails at the trade deadline, just based on talent and potential, a Cousins-Lopez frontcourt would still be nice. We could still try to retain DWill and extend Lopez, and get another big-salary player to further complement that Twin Towers as Cousins would still be on rookie contract. That could still be a pretty good team.

by stenpoint on Jan 4, 2012 7:50 AM EST reply actions

maybe not

Manny Ramirez wanted a new contract despite Boston owning 2 option years on his deal. So Manny started acting like a total ass, giving minimal effort and faking injuries until he got his wish.

Cousins has the potential (to be just as big of an ass as Manny). And he could be a case of addition by subtraction

by Murse Mike on Jan 4, 2012 8:05 AM EST up reply actions

We've seen this movie before

Cousins reminds me of Zach Randolph the sequel. They guy has the talent to potentially be one of the best in the league at his position. Attitude problems hold him back & make him almost cancerous to a locker room. Teams will pay him & keep taking chances on him. Eventually he’ll grow up & realize his potential, but how far down the line will that be?

by TheNetsFan on Jan 4, 2012 10:12 AM EST reply actions

its easier to put up good stats on a bad team being the 1st option than on a great team being the 3rd option.. examples: chris bosh ave goes down, while you look at kevin love, b.lopez, boozer, etc.. to think that lopez>bynum haha.. the only argument lopez has is his health, and now look whos playing.. :)
