Okur Out, Brooks Game Time
Avery Johnson got his daily medical report today and there was good news and bad news. Under bad news (we have to start there), Mehmet Okur will be out Sunday with back spasms and will miss "a couple games," according to Johnson. Although an MRI was negative, Okur will see a back specialist.
The (sorta) good news is that MarShon Brooks received an unspecified injection Saturday and is a game time decision. The Nets still believe Brooks, who has missed three straight games with an achilles issue, has needed rest more than anything. An ultrasound of the affected area, taken Saturday as well, showed nothing. The team also confirmed Jordan Williams will be available vs. the Raptors following his call-up.

I’d be shocked if he doesnt play tonight.

Brooks already said that he is able to do everything ...
..just a little pain, which I suspect his injection will take care of wants it starts to work.
He could have played previously, but they wrote that Rest would be best.

What do you think about Brooks

by corky_romano4life on Jan 29, 2012 11:11 AM EST reply actions
I agree with this
Brooks off the bench=still productive
Morrow off the bench=confidence lacking parasite
as much as I would like to see him on the starting unit
with Lopez in the lineup it does make sense to have him come off the bench and be our Harden.
Until Farmar gets moved, playing those two together could be a bit of a problem.
All Star Break is so crucial for us.
Its the period of rest the all the players need. and hopefully thats when brook can get back into game shape. Thats when we need to make a push for the playoffs.
Good point.
"Next year, with a full training camp, I think he can go after that Scott Skiles' record of 30." - Billy King
Can people stop with this is the Raptors
One game worse than us and the last time we we had both Brooks and Okur. Nets have little talent and while they are playing better need all the help they can get to beat any team including the raptors. We are not a lock to beat any team, we should bear the Raptors and Brooks playing helps us. If nets want to have a shot at playoffs they need to do all they can to win games they should if Brooks has gotten enough rest even to the point of being cautious he should play but you don’t hold him out because the nets are playing a bad team.
The bucks beat the lakers last night without Bogut and thats just one team the nets would need to beat our for eight spot.

Amen to that
lets not get ahead of ourselves
yup and probably over there in the raptors camp
they’re saying exactly the same thing about the nets
I would sit him again
We can beat TOR without him. I am not worried like shea.
One thing is for sure, we need him IND.
THE NBA
Where YOU DONT KNOW WHAT Happens
I'm not worried
But I don’t think we’re some lock. We’re a 7 win team all we need is Deron to have a bad game and Raptors to close out a little on our shooters and we can lose esp if say Derozan got hot. I’m not a Deron basher and I think he has turned a corner but he has had bad games this year. Without Brooks nets have no one to create a shot and only have shooters and the hump.
Only play Brooks if he’s ready but don’t sit him because we win two games in a row and suddenly they can’t touch us.
You mention the pacers Nets are less likely to beat them then the Raptors and will probably lose even with Brooks. So from the point of the postseason this is the more important game.

That millisecond you're sure you're going to die when you lean back in your chair a little too far.
I LOVE IT!
From Mike Mazzeo’s Pre-game Notes:
The Nets are tied with the Knicks in the standings; both teams are 7-13.
"We’ll see. It’ll be better if we beat them in a couple days. It’s still early so what’s going on now doesn’t matter. It’s how you finish," Williams said. "It’s good that we’re right there because of how bad we started off, and we’re improving so hopefully we can surpass them soon."
Surpass them today!
That millisecond you're sure you're going to die when you lean back in your chair a little too far.
Realgm.com is saying that the Sixers have asked about Stoudemire....
I wonder what their offer would be
Why would the Knicks do that..
That millisecond you're sure you're going to die when you lean back in your chair a little too far.
I think the very fact that the Knicks are trying to ship out Amare…goes to show how much his value has dropped. He went from being the lynchpin of that offense…to now being expendable. Ive always maintained that overpaying for a player with no knee cartilege will come back to haunt them.
nobody ever said the knicks are trying to ship out amare..
unless i missed it.

why would philly have to give up a pick
his contract is uninsured.

From Deron:
Via Fred Kerber- Deron’s Play Leading to Nets Gain-
My spirits are a lot better now. We’re playing with a lot of energy. That’s helping everybody, not just myself but everybody. … We’re a totally different team than we were a month ago."
A month down the road, they could be a totally different team again. Brook Lopez is rehabbing a broken foot at is expected back in February. And the law of averages says the Nets could catch a medical break and get people healthy after having used 10 different starting lineups in 20 games. Williams admits he and the Nets envision what can be.
"Yeah, we want to think like that, that’s why we’re trying to win as many games as possible so we’re not just digging ourselves out of a rut when Brook comes back and Memo [Mehmet Okur] gets healthy and the rook [MarShon Brooks] gets healthy," Williams said. "We’re playing good basketball without these guys right now, so once they get back we’re going to be even better."
From Raptors HQ Raptors Game day Preview-
The last time that I previewed a New Jersey Nets vs. Toronto Raptors matchup, I made one of the most inaccurate predictions of all time.
At that time, the Toronto Raptors were 3-3, and riding a two game winning streak. For that game, I said that “I can finally say without a single doubt that the Toronto Raptors will beat the New Jersey Nets. Scratch that, the Toronto Raptors are going to manhandle the New Jersey Nets.”
I could not have possibly been more wrong
Haha Keep forgetting the raptors play in canada-
Williams should be the defence’s number one priority if they are hoping to improve on their current 1-3 record at the Prudential Centre.
The Nets did not practice Saturday after picking up consecutive wins for the first time all season.
In helping the Nets to their first winning streak, Humphries’ gutsy performance also lived up to the team’s new ultra-positive mantra: no matter the situation, the Nets’ response is, “I love it.”
“You gotta love everything,” a smiling Humphries said in the locker room Friday night. “You gotta love playing not at 100 percent and just go play. No excuses.”

Gaines is the primary back up for Dwill and we have Lopez/Okur/Kaman clogging up the joint. That sounds less than ideal, unless Brook can play PF.
lmao @ how much value Sheridan thinks Kaman has. He’s a one year rental where ever he goes probably, he’s an average player, he’s not really in his prime any more at around 30 years old. Nobody would consider giving the youth he has in the Houston proposal or the picks in the Nets proposal.
Also with Lopez coming back fairly soon, we don’t need 3 guys (Lopez, Okur, and Kaman) who can only defend centers.

trading our 2013 1st, even if protected, would prevent us from offering our 1st rd pick from this year’s draft to Orl.

The player who would be traded is one who the Hornets have taken off the team. Its an obvious distress sale.
If Okur is really hurt and he might be, insurance will pay 80% of his salary making him alone a bargain.

google Uninsured Nba contracts
the first 10 titles that appear have the words Amare Stoudemire in them
insurance beneficial for team
under most policies, insurance kicks in when a player misses a certain number of games and pay 80% of the players salary to the team. I expect that insurance is paying part of Lopez’s salary.
So lets say Okur goes down for the season with back spasms again. Not only is he an expiring contract, his salary is paid up to 80%. That is already true of James, whose contract is small, around $2 million.
Injured players on expiring contracts are nice assets in trades.

Although an MRI was negative, Okur will see a back specialist.
Surprised Jerry25 has not commented on this. Isn’t his wife a back specialist? He told Okur to seek non-Western treatment IIRC.
2011-2012 season prediction: 22-44
And I'm fine with that. One of the original leaders of the "Dwight Howard, not Nono Hilario" movement.
No need to comment here again. I told Okur directly (what he needs to ask the Ortho. MD tomorrow) and in Mazzeo article above.
No, my wife is an all around Alternative Medicine doctor, as well as a Chinese Acupuncture specialist.
I talk with patients every day about how only Acupuncture has helped their various problems, that Western Medicine couldn’t (of which back spasms is a no-brainer).
The day will occur when every NBA (and Baseball/Football) team will have a full time Acupuncturist on the staff, but there still are roadblocks in the current system. If only to reduce the number of lost playing days, the cost would be insignificant.

From silver screen n roll...pretty interesting fan take. Seriously why pick kobe over dwill if you are dwight. Its a bad fit.
The problem is obvious, and very, very hard to fix.
It amazes me that no one on this board talks about this much, but here it is:
Anyone can see that these guys do not like each other. They don’t hate each other, but they have zero chemistry and you can see that for each of them except Kobe, whose work ethic borders on the psychotic, they are just professional men showing up for work every day, doing the job, and going home. They exhibit no joy in the game, or even much passion while playing it. They’re not a team.
Though it’s supposed to be "his team"—and he won’t allow it to be any other way—Kobe is so cold and unlikeable that although teammates may respond somewhat to his criticism and demands, he is not by any reasonable definition a leader. Being badgered and found lacking constantly is not leadership, it’s ultimately demoralizing…particularly when the supposed leader makes an exception to the "be a member of a team" thing whenever he feels like it and jacks 30 shots even if he misses the first 10 of them.
The Los Angeles Lakers are in big, big trouble, and it is not something that can be fixed with a locker room pep talk or a change in approach to coaching. They’re loaded with talent, so they’ll win quite a few games, but there’s no reason to believe they won’t collapse into mutual bickering and finger-pointing when the pressure of the playoffs rolls around, just as they did last year. There isn’t trust on this team, and damned little mutual affection.
And there is good reason for that: the requirements of the Lakers’ superstar severely limit the team’s ability to shape itself to be most effective, and now that he is getting older, he can’t make up the difference. One glaring example: why haven’t the Lakers had a potent point guard for more than a decade? Because the whole offense goes through Kobe, that’s why…and Kobe hogs the ball, so who needs a distributor?
Frankly, I think Lakers fans should be glad the Chris Paul deal didn’t go through, because those two guys would NOT have played well together.
The Lakers can blow up the team and bring in a bunch of new pieces to fit around Kobe, but the same dynamic will apply: whoever is on the Lakers will have to defer to the Iceman, who gets to follow a different set of rules. They’re going to resent that. If it turns out that it is a star like Dwight Howard, he’s going to wonder why the hell Kobe gets free rein to do whatever he likes when he’s the most dominant center in the game, and arguably a better overall player than Kobe at this point in his career.
If I were Howard, I wouldn’t want to play alongside Kobe. And I certainly wouldn’t want to play with Kobe and the dregs that would be left after Kobe’s and Howard’s salaries had sucked up every nickel under the cap.
At the end of the day, teams win championships. Even the 90s Bulls, dominated as they were by MJ, had a leader who could lead and who was willing to pass that final shot to someone else, even though he had a far higher rate of success in shooting game-winners than does Kobe Bryant. The combination of Kobe’s personality, the very odd mix of characters on the team and—I’ll say it—some of the too-slick-too-cool focus on looking good and hobnobbing with celebrities that being in LA brings has stirred up a brew that isn’t going to get better, honestly, until Kobe retires.

Send it to Howard, so that he is less likely to want to re-sign with LAL.
If Howard doesn’t want to re-sign with LAL, then no trade with LAL would happen.
I've said this.
If you think Kobe is bad, research how bad MJ was to teammates.
It says that Kobes work ethic borders on phycotic but if he sees you working as hard and are as good as he is, he will share the light. Dude might have aspergers as well, they’re finding a lot of undiagnosed adults.

have to be a fool to think he is re-signing there
he’s basically called out Jameer and the other vets. on OPP someone made a chart showing how the magics best 5 man units involve: Ryan Anderson, JJ Redick, and Duhon
they decline an option on RA but give big baby and j-rich 4 year deals. Otis’ best and worst move was getting Rashard Lewis. all the double-edged results from that have ruined the team and he made some of the worst impulse transactions ever

BK is doing his share to create enough cap space to scare Otis into losing Howard for nothing in return.
However, it is up to Lopez to return to full ability by the All Star break, and for Howard to insist on getting traded to Nets.
BK has little control over that, but maybe DWill can keep Howard focused on The Plan (only Nets to re-sign).
i just want to see marshon play whether for 10 minutes or 25 minutes

It is Bynum+Gasol that I fear ORL would accept, but not sure if Howard would agree to extend with Lakers (in that case).
Without certainty of Howard extending, they Bynum+Gasol won’t happen.
Otis knows that Bynum needs much more “road testing” to see if his knees hold up.

This is going to be an easy win at home vs. the Raps without Bargnani. Looking forward to seeing MarShon back on the court, even in a limited role.
The Nets are going to need these easy wins because starting on February 11th they play at home vs. the Spurs and Grizzlies, away versus the Pacers and Bulls, home for the Bucks, the Garden versus the Knicks, the Magic at home and Dallas on the road.
After that dust settles we’ll see if the Nets are actually a potential playoff squad. It’s way too early in the season for anyone to even be excited about where we are in the standings.
