The myth of Dwight's list

Nets, Lakers, Mavs, we hear time and time again that this IS Howard's list of teams he would sign an extension with , however, I think it WAS his list of choices? Why has this changed? Because this list was made preseason when Orlando had leverage on Dwight. If he wanted to start the next phase of his career and eliminate the media distraction by finding a new home preseason he had to make it worth Orlando's while to trade him. Look at the three teams on his list, both the Nets and the Mavs had plans to feature Deron and Dwight, while the Lakers had dreams of bringing in CP3 and Dwight. See the connection? Dwight wants to play with Deron or Paul! Since the off season David Stern has squashed the Laker's chance of such a scenario, and teaming up in Dallas seems very difficult and improbable. That leaves the Nets, who maintained their ability to give Dwight what he wants.

Some may quote earlier comments from Dwight that "nothing has changed" regarding his list. I don't buy that though, that more likely a smart, well advised athlete who knows not to add gas to the fire during the season for no reason, since nothing will likely happen until closer to the deadline. The point is I do not fear the threat of the Lakers dangling Bynum. The biggest threat is the other LA team, but will they really offer Blake Griffen? If so game over, if not welcome to the Nets Dwight.

Call the bluff Nets! Make it happen with No Marshon Brooks and No Hedo.

My point is things change

Preseason. Dwight: I’m going getting out of Orlando
CP3: Well I can force a trade to the Lakers, and we can join up and win rings there
Deron: Come to the Nets with me, or go to Dallas and I’ll meet you there.

Now

Dwight: How’s Brooklyn looking
Deron: I love it

by SovietBrooklyn on Jan 28, 2012 3:53 PM EST up reply actions

I think the list was just media driven

You hit the nail on the head when you mentioned CP3 and Deron. Dwight wants to play with an elite PG. Since he’s friends with Deron i think his ultimate destination is the Nets regardless of any list. If Deron goes to DAL in the offseason than Dwight will want DAL. I think the easiest path is the NETS though….

If Dwight came out and said i want to play for the Nets and only the Nets it would have killed his nice guy persona. The “traitor” label would have been worse. Instead he played it save. Just because he listed LA and DAL or now even BOS doesn’t mean he’ll actually sign an extension with them. Dwight is just saying the right things, like all athletes do when a camera is in their face.

LA = a mid 30’s Kobe and NOBODY else (Bynum would be in the trade, Gasol is in his 30s also)

DAL = an aging Dirk and NOBODY else

BOS = an aging Paul Peirce and Rondo

NJ = Deron Williams (young), Marshon Brooks (potential ROY), Brook Lopez (top 5 C, 20PPG scorer) + 2 first round picks (1 lottery)

Call me a homer but i think the Nets have the brighter future.

been saying the exact same

thing for months….so many pluses for Brooklyn……only real disadvantage I see to Dallas is cost of living and no state income tax – and I honestly believe that difference will easily be made up in a NY or LA market…

when asked recently if Howard's list had changed

Otis Smith said no.

End of story.

"It's as sweet as it ever was, I'll tell you. Now, hopefully, we started something and we can win some more championships, but we're going to enjoy this one right now. Have a little champagne." --Julius Erving, May 12, 1976, ABA champion Nets locker room.

Clearly i'm speculating

but taking taking a GM at his word on what he says to the media? I know you know better than that. What benefit would Otis have to say otherwise? Why would he create a new story/distraction or hurt his negotiation leverage?

when will people learn? its not what makes sense to us or the rest of the world

Its what Dwight wants, what Orlando decides to do. Look at Lebron, if he had decided to do what made the most sense he would have gone with Bosh andI joined the Nets or the Bulls who already had a young solid core. instead he does what he wants to do and joins his buddy in miami, same with Carmelo he would have waited out for free agency and joined the knicks then or just stayed in denver with an already talanted team. These players will do what they want to do! it don’t matter how ilogical it will seem to us…

by Prokyswallet on Jan 28, 2012 5:52 PM EST reply actions

That is the logic I'm applying though

No matter what was said in the media, the plan was in place between these players to join together for a long time. Despite all the great pitches for Lebron and Bosch from every team in the league with the cap room, and the Nets unrelenting attempt to land Melo, in the end the players went where they wanted to play with who they wanted to play with. Why not think Dwight has the same idea. Right now everyone is looking at is as “Dwight wants to play with Deron.” I’m saying recent history says Dwight will play with Deron and “the list” is just evidence of this because all teams on the list were chosen because they could pair Dwight with Deron or CP3. Now it seems that Brooklyn is by far the most likely destination.

by SovietBrooklyn on Jan 28, 2012 8:02 PM EST up reply actions

orlando has no choice but to trade him. but seeing the possibility of pairing both lopez and dwight tru free agency im not sure bk want to trade anymore.
otis smith was probably already set to deal with another team outside of his “list” just to get more back. but if dwight really wants to come he will become a free agent even if he stays in orlando until the end of the season or if he get rented elsewhere.

Didnt u see the article in ESPN New York

We need to shed &mil from the cap to sign Dwight outright as a free agent. That means finding a way to unload 2 of out of Sh. Williams/Farmar/Petro or renouncing Brook Lopez’s rights. unlees we do that, we can’t sign Dwight outright in Free Agency.

by rodrain2 on Jan 28, 2012 6:33 PM EST up reply actions

The Nets cap situation has a lot of moving parts, it'll be very easy to clear enough room

That article assumed that the Nets would have 2 picks taking up about 4mil in cap room. Houston is likely to miss the playoffs, leaving us with less salary obligation

-Morrow has good value, especially as a useful player on an expiring deal, very easy to move
-Farmar is having another good season, might opt out looking for a long term deal
-Shw Williams also has a player option. He’s gradually improving and there’s a chance that he might also seek a longer deal
-Shw Williams can be waived with the Stretch exemption, leaving the Nets with about another 1.7mil in cap room
- Petro’s contract is expiring, and it’s small too. The last 2 seasons, Washington use cap room for Yi and Turiaf in exchange for $3mil. It’s very possible that Washington or another team with cap room to waste would do something similar

Or at the very worst, Morrow can be moved with the 2 picks, and Shw Williams can be stretched to clear enough room.

There are MANY ways to easily clear enough cap room for Dwight, and if Farmar and Williams optout, it won’t even be necessary

by Murse Mike on Jan 30, 2012 4:54 PM EST up reply actions

So in other words

They have to clear 7 mil. and may have to get rid of 2 of Farmar/Petro/Morrow. which your explanation confirms.

not entirely true......DHow andn

DWil could do what LBJ and Wade did – which was take less money to allow the team to bring in more talent…..I don’t think it’s out of the question

if he didnt want to go to the Lakers he would have said they're off the list

I don’t see why he would risk being traded there if he didnt want to be there

by Scooby803 on Jan 28, 2012 6:10 PM EST reply actions

He did come out and say that

he wouldn’t want to go to the Lakers if both Pau and Bynum were moved, and they’re the only pieces that have good value that the Lakers have.

It’ll take more than Bynum to beat the Nets’ assets of Lopez, Brooks, 2012 picks, and cap flexibility

by Murse Mike on Jan 30, 2012 4:56 PM EST up reply actions

yes, i believe his first choice was the nets

But Howard will be traded nonetheless. And if he is traded to the Lakers, with Gasol and Kobe(say what you want that they are old) but, you really dont think they can win a championship there? (and the $30m more than he get). I believe the Lakers is not his first choice because he wants to be the alpha dog, and he cant be that in Laker Land.

by letsgolal on Jan 28, 2012 9:42 PM EST reply actions

Didn't they say the same thing about Pippen, Barkley, and Olajuwon in Houston?

How could they not win a championship? Phil Jackson and Brian Shaw had a big effect on keeping Kobe in check and Pau focused. Pau is already complaining about his role and his shot totals. I really doubt Howard would be as accepting as Bynum is of a supporting role.

I would however really like to see Bynum in Orlando. So we could finally see the offensive game the Lakers have been hiding from us.

Ultimately I see the Lakers siding with Bynum and trading Gasol but not for Howard.

Happy to see Billy King graduated in an accelerated "how to make a trade" class in just one night :)

Is my post more believable now?
A source close to the negotiations says Howard’s representatives warned the Lakers that Howard would opt out of his contract and test the free-agent market next summer — which has the Lakers’ brass understandably nervous
