Ratner: Nets Regional, Global Team

In an interview with Forbes' Mike Ozanian, Bruce Ratner says Barclays Center, with its location and Brooklyn, with its global brand, will make the Nets a regional team as well as a global team.

Ratner compared the Nets to the Giants and Jets who while they play in New Jersey have fans throughout the New York metropolitan area. He expects the Nets to be the same. As for globalization, Ratner says it's all about "Brooklyn, Brooklyn, Brooklyn" which is a brand known around the world.

As for Opening Night, the arena developer, more or less his official title nowadays, says Jay-Z "might bring his beautiful baby and his very beautiful wife". Blue Ivy Carter will be eight months old.

he still owns a MAJOR portion of the real estate involved in the Barclays center deal, the deal didnt consist of just a stadium, there was a whole lot of other real estate entities involved. Proky may own the NETS but Ratner owns the stadium essentially

by King Of Russia on Jan 25, 2012 3:58 PM EST up reply actions

here you go

1) Bruce Ratner is the largest minority owner of the Nets, He and his partners own 20% of the team. Those partners include his parent company, Forest City Enterprises; Jay-Z and a lot of other people, partnerships and companies. Prokhorov’s Onexim Sports and Entertainment owns 80% of the Nets. No partners.

2) Bruce Ratner is the majority owner of Barclays Center, with 55%. Prokhorov’s Onexim Sports and Entertainment owns 45%. Prokhorov also has the right to swap debt he holds on arena infrastructure for additional shares in the arena. The debt matures in September 2013. Unless Ratner wants to pay Prokhorov $104 million in a lump sum, Prokhorov gains control of 80% of Barclays Center. Expect that to happen.

3) Under the original deal signed by Prokhorov and Ratner, Prokhorov also has an option to buy up to 20% of the overall Atlantic Yards project beyond the arena, a $4 billion project with 16 high rise towers. The option price has never been revealed although a Russian publication put it at the bargain basement price of $120 million. Prokhorov is expected to decide whether to exercise that option soon.

Mikhail drives a hard bargain.

difference is

The Giants and Jets have been able to compete consistently this past decade. It’ll be a miracle if the Nets win a playoff game at this point.

World Series attitude, champagne bottle life, nothing every changes so tonight is like tomorrow night.

giants just barely made it into the playoffs and are now about to compete for the SB, you just wouldn’t see that quick of a turnaround in the NBA ever

Funny I was out to lunch with coworkers today

and Brooklyn was the topic of conversation. Two women about 60 were born in Brooklyn and said growing up everyone was trying to get out of BK but NOW everyone is going back to BK. Another woman’s son is moving into an apartment in Brooklyn as well.

To be fair, they likely would not know manhattan either. But most people think of Manhattan when you say new York City

knicks and nets are closer to rangers/islanders/devils

The Nets will likely never have a sustained fan base in Manhattan. As Manhattan is the center of the media market…the Nets will not have the same level of coverage as the Knicks.

by orangeeater on Jan 25, 2012 3:29 PM EST reply actions

the yankees play in the bronx and get more media coverage than any other NY team. but you’re right in that the nets will never be as slobbered on by the media as the nix. in part because the knicks are owned by a NY media mogul.

they'll be plenty big in Manhattan...

If they have Dwight, Deron, and start winning titles (while also playing on ESPN every other night).

Also cant compare Clippers and Lakers.. they play in the same building.. if the Knicks and Nets shared a building

like the Giants and Jets or Lakers and Clippers than you can say they pull from the same fanbase

they Nets will be a regional team (which isnt a bad thing) until proven otherwise

by orangeeater on Jan 25, 2012 3:42 PM EST reply actions

sports fans that aren't diehards are fickle

if the nets are winning i promise you they’ll have a large fanbase across the tri state. look at the jets before fatboy rex ryan got there. they were an afterthought. then these last few years you started seeing jets stuff everywhere. it’s not like the knicks are lording over us with a history of winning championships like the lakers are with the clippers. historically, they suck too.

by William_H_HOLLA on Jan 25, 2012 3:46 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly

if Dwight Howard plays in Brooklyn we will be more than regional, come on now

It is hard to imagine the changes that will be coming but it has the potential for great success in an instant

Wonder how much we jump next year....

….Knicks are worth $780 million, we’re at less than half of that…

If we land one more superstar and open up Brooklyn with a bang, we might be the first team to jump 100% in a year.

That is classic

the guy truly hates losing and the media.

I love that. Imagine if RJ was still here there would definitely be a competition for the most sarcastic quotes.

That is why Dwill is more then happy to have a guy like Dwight here. Dwight is a media magnet and Dwill would be left alone.

by SIC One on Jan 25, 2012 4:59 PM EST up reply actions

According to Woj who was just on Rim Jome:

You can have only one player per team who receives the 5 year max deal.

Dwight- 5 year max
Deron- 4 year max

he can still do that

but the problem is the other Nets players have to be hitting their shots. for there to be space like that defenders have to be worried Dwill will pass the ball to shooters. One thing is for sure BKing has made sure that we have a lot of 3 pt shooters. Now the players have to start hitting them consistently.

the only issue I have with this video is that out of the top 20 there were only 2 or 3 passing plays.
