Nets Still Behind Knicks in Rankings

The Power Rankings are out this Monday afternoon and there are two pieces of news: 1) the Nets have made some movement but remain behind the Knicks in each of the rankings, and 2) the team they face Monday evening is unanimously seen as the best in the NBA.

John Schuhmann, who moved the Nets up four places to #24, writes of why things still aren't going their way. "Their opponents are shooting 43 percent from 3-point range, by far the highest rate in the league". Marc Stein, who didn't move the Nets from #26, adds the Nets have "somehow managed to post a lower team shooting percentage from the field than the opposition in (gulp) all 17 games so far."

Gotta love BSPN

NY has lost 6 games in a row, we are 3-3 in our last 6, yet they are higher
We just beat GS and have the same number of wins, yet they are higher
Detroit has 4 wins, yet they are higher

Doing a PW is not based on logic but gut

These writers are not sure what is it they want to convey, 1 legged bull not really going to beat full steamed thunder so the logic is based on a complex formula where depending on team popularity and the writers status within the system, one can publish.

Its in subtle references that I find the real impressions. For example C webb emphatically said Nets need a big man when Lopez went down. While trade pundits belittle him. Similarly guys who fail to give major props to brooks would say he can score the expression however is the give away regarding their ackwd

by SunilP on Jan 23, 2012 1:51 PM EST via Android app reply actions

What does your gut say about a Nets / Knicks 7 game series?

Suppose the Nets play the Knicks in a 7 game series starting today, what does your gut say about the Nets ability to win 4 games?

My gut says Nets win 2 out of 7 against Knicks.

Knicks are currently better than the Nets. Period.

it's not fair to criticize our shooting %

We have one guy who has a higher usage % than Rose or Cousins or Dirk, and is shooting .372. When our real PG gets back from Turkey we’ll never have to play this guy again.

Some of you would read this

and be upset about our rankings behind the Knicks who’ve lost 6 straight and to non-playoff teams at that.

Some of you would read this like me:

And see that a team with no cap space, two legitimate “superstars” and an “allstar” defensive C with a lock for ROY is just 1 place above us in the power rankings.

no they play defense

but it’s about as effective as if they didn’t. In fact, sometimes I wish they wouldn’t play defense and just let the opposing team score so we don’t have to foul them after they take the shot and allow them an AND 1 play for 3 points.

In fact, I bet you if we did just that, we’d be 5-6 points closer in each game,.

by Claud on Jan 23, 2012 2:55 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not letting him off that easy

there have been i don’t know how many times where a TIMEOUT call was necessary I feel but not called. Usually this is when the opposing team is going on a scoring run and we wait till we’re down 15 before we take a Timeout. AND when the team is running around like they have their heads cut off and no idea what they doing, avery needs to run a damn play or at least settle his team down. Don’t get me wrong, i’m very happy with carlesimo as our assistant coach but Avery leads a lot to be desired.

The only plus side is he’s at least not sitting our starters for no good reason or just giving up on the 3rd. I want effort to the very last second of the clock damn it. I should be able to expect that as a fan shortened season or not.

by Roccor420 on Jan 23, 2012 3:16 PM EST up reply actions

From Poasting and Toasting :
I think we have the talent to win a championship but we just don’t have the coach to motivate the team. I time we get rid of Pringles and call up Phil Jackson and ask him how much do you want to coach the Knicks. You know he will guide us to a championship. He has won as well all remember with the Bulls and then pulled it of with the Lakers. I don’t think the players believe in D’Antoni anymore and being that this is a short season it would be better to get rid of him now bring in Jackson get to the playoffs and see what we we can do. I am not saying he is not a good coach D’Antoni is a good coach but we need a great coach to handle this Knicks team!

When can i get my Dwight Howard Brooklyn Nets Jersey?

by AmbassadorAmeer on Jan 23, 2012 2:41 PM EST reply actions

but Like we’ve said many times before, the coach can only do so much, it comes down to talent, chemistry, commitment from the players, etc

He has no lift and his game mirrors KG’s now. All perimeter shots with no explosiveness.

Unless he turns it around the Knicks will struggle all year.

But this is a speculative discussion. There are no stats for such a subject.

Good try, though.

by Dopeness on Jan 23, 2012 3:27 PM EST up reply actions

Wouldn't really serve a point.

Davis has a significant amount of weight since last season. He’s also (presumably) motivated — over the course of his career, we’ve seen that a motivated Baron Davis is a whole different animal.

That’s why I keep saying: we’ll see.

by Dopeness on Jan 23, 2012 3:32 PM EST up reply actions

So you're basically saying "funk the stats"

I can’t agree with that. Davis’ true talent level has been established by his performance the last several seasons.

Even if he’s more “motivated” now, he’s also older (33 in April).

Oh pissing blimey there's jam coming out of the walls!

by TWilliAM on Jan 23, 2012 3:36 PM EST up reply actions

you may have something there though

Don’t get me wrong I love putting the knicks down whenever there is an opportunity, but talent wise they are much better than the Nets regardless.

When they did the trade for Chandler the first thought came to mind that that is top 3 or at least top 5 frontcourt in the NBA. I honestly thought the knicks would rock out with their moiso out this year. They don’t have a “real” PG but let’s be honest, with that front court initially I thought ND and NI could join the knicks as their 1 and 2 and chuck the ball towards the basket and Knicks would do well.

That apparently is not the case, they have no flow of offense because of Melo. Say what you want about Amare but before Melo got there (with good role players) Amare was able to lead a Knicks back into the spotlight.

With Melo on the team he is a chucker, takes way too many shots for that team to develop any offensive flow.

Chandler only fits on that team as a defensive big and he is playing well, not sure why that team is playing so badly.

by Roccor420 on Jan 23, 2012 3:25 PM EST up reply actions

There would be reasons for optimism

Except that two players who are grossly underperforming (Amare/Toney Douglas) are also coming off injuries. Baron Davis would have to turn the clock back to 2008 to help them in any significant way. Otherwise, it’s impossible to project him as anything more than a very mild upgrade on Iman Shumpert.

They need a real PG. They need the real Amare to show up. They need a coach that demands defensive intensity. Until those things happen, they are going to be a disappointment.

Oh pissing blimey there's jam coming out of the walls!

by TWilliAM on Jan 23, 2012 3:25 PM EST up reply actions

Actually

I think people are overestimating what his impact will be mainly because it’s a virtual certainty he will not stay healthy.

by NetsKiNG on Jan 23, 2012 2:54 PM EST up reply actions

Baron Davis has been a solidly below-average NBA PG for years now.

Speaking of the Knicks

Could they have an easier schedule to start the season?

They’ve played sub .500 teams all season and have gotten mad breaks. They play Denver on Denver’s 5th game in 7 nights (on the road) and the Knicks play at home, then have 2 days off….to prepare for the BOBCATS.

Our schedule is brutal Febuary is supposedly our easy month its still rough

"We're not there yet, but we're going somewhere," Johnson said. "And we're going to Brooklyn. We're not going to contract. We're going to Brooklyn."

again

Don’t care about rankings, but we are hanging in there…and not many other bad teams have a potential 20 ppg and 8 rpg player coming in soon.

Melo for Howard?

Forget Amare+Chandler for Howard, what if the Knicks trade Melo instead. Melo could be that replacement big star Orlando wants. Knicks could then send Chandler elsewhere, for a point or wing or cap space to sign somebody next season.

Yep, as it’s Howard, this is Nets-related speculation.
