Magic Inquire About Chandler/Stoudemire for D12 Swap?

Stephen A. Smith: "As I told you a little bit earlier in the hour, I have some news to report about your New York Knicks. The Orlando Magic, I will preface my statement by telling you that they have categorically denied this, but my sources tell me that they have inquired about Tyson Chandler and Amar'e Stoudemire going to Orlando for Dwight Howard. Let me confess to you that I'm torn. From a basketball standpoint, it would seem you do that trade in a heartbeat. You don't teach seven-feet and you don't teach the dominate and the skills that Dwight Howard has. But I like Tyson Chandler. I like the fact that he rebounds and defends." IamaGM.com
Stephan A. Smith hasn't exactly been the most reliable source for rumors of late, but who are his sources this time around? As we've heard, Orlando is not looking to rebuild. This could be what they're looking for. It's clearly not time to push the panic button just yet, but it's not really what you want to hear as a Nets fan, on many levels.

Ouch!!!

Is Dwight ok with playing for the Knicks … and Melo?

by NetsFanInVA on Jan 23, 2012 1:28 PM EST reply actions

Probably not

My guess is that Dwight does not want to play wingman to another player who needs to dominate the ball and the offense. Thus his disinterest in playing with Kobe or DRose and probably Melo too, and his preference for DWill or Paul as a sidekick. I would day that any D12 trade NOT to the Nets, whether its the Knicks, Lakers, or Mavs (in FA), is contingent on DWill going there as well. Essentially if this trade happens with Knicks, I expect them to try and swap Melo for DWill, and its just a question of whether the Nets want to play along. In order to take a step back from our worst-case scenario, they probably will.

Well seems that Amare and Carmelo not on the same page at all. I think ultimately the Knicks have to trade 1 of the 2 as clearly they are not going to win as presently constructed.

That said, I can’t imagine Orlando taking on a massive uninsurable contract (Amare). Remember, the Knicks had no competition for Amare – but they were a laughingstock at the time and just went out and gave him the max (when they realistically could have offered less) since he was uninsurable. It could be the double whammy of crippling a franchise for the next decade – losing your star player (Dwight) and replacing with a gaping salary for an injury riddled player (Amare) – if Amare gets hurt you are about 6-7 years from respectability.

And I still don’t buy that Orlando dumps Dwight Howard when they are in the thick of the championship discussion. Chicago has injury issues, Miami has not looked good, Dirk looks like he is breaking down, Lakers are beatable, etc. I really think that Orlando holds onto Dwight and rolls the dice in the offseason.

by Ryan243 on Jan 23, 2012 1:39 PM EST reply actions

Yeah, I think they will

Although those PTI knuckleheads were talking last night about how the Magic HAVE to trade Dwight, and they are right. They are going to lose him regardless of what they do in the playoffs. But I think the Magic will just refuse to take the steps to stay competitive beyond this year because they cannot fathom not having Dwight.

Reading comprehension. Learn it, live it, love it.

Also this rumor is nonsense. At best its the Magic trying to pressure LA. At worst, its nothing.

This is funny

but dont underestimate Steven A Smith -- he was the first guy to report that LBJ and D-Wade and Bosh were going to team up….. so hey you never know

When can i get my Dwight Howard Brooklyn Nets Jersey?

by AmbassadorAmeer on Jan 23, 2012 2:21 PM EST reply actions

Not Positive

but I believe Vecsey predicted it long before Smith did. I specifically remember him calling it around/right after the two of them played on the national team. I don’t think this is his first mention of it, but it wouldn’t surprise me if Smith just jacked his thoughts/news and claimed it for his own; http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/more_sports/me_and_lebron_Fq5z1fqsJI0NxEGm3JTn0J

Amare's knees are made of (uninsured) swiss cheese.

No team wants to make that kind of $ commitment to a big man – especially one that’s not even playing that well (relatively speaking). The Magic are, at best, trying to create a bigger market so that if/when they deal DH, they can get more for him, a la Denver with Melo.

by CBEE on Jan 23, 2012 2:34 PM EST reply actions

I don't believe one bit of that

Hey the Knicks suck, Amare is playing terrible so let’s help them out by taking their fragile overpaid PF and an over paid role player. It’s Orlando being smart here trying to get leverage cause right now they don’t have any.

by Rockice_8 on Jan 23, 2012 3:23 PM EST reply actions

Wow..then we as Nets fans get pissed off when Nets trade rumours get passed off as horrible...

this trade is not as bad as you people are saying..yes Amare Knees are uninsured but the KNicks took a chance on him why won’t another team? Hes an all star and he was playing great until Melo arrived, adding Chandler to the deal gives it more credibility, maybe add Fields or Shumpert and I can see Orlando doing this deal. I would love for Dwight to come the Nets but its obvious Orlando doesn’t want to give its star what he wants. and whos to say he wouldn’t sign with the Knicks? why wouldn’t he? Remember we are Nets fans so we are trained to hate the Knicks but to the rest of the world they are a big name team. if hes willing to sign with an old Kobe in LA why wouldn’t he sign with a young Carmelo in NYC?

by Prokyswallet on Jan 23, 2012 3:42 PM EST reply actions

No it really is terrible

This is the kind of fantasy trading that ESPN pundits love to speculate in, but it’s an outright steal for the Knicks and a death sentence for Orlando. A’mare has been putrid this season, despite his still respectable per game statistics. Chandler has been very solid for the Knicks but is still overpaid. The two together will be horrendous contracts down the road, and they do nothing to keep Orlando competitive. I’m sorry, a Stoudemire/Chandler/Anderson frontcourt does not make the Magic dominant like a Howard/Anderson frontcourt does.

.... AND..... The Knicks burn us again. lol

This trade makes too much sense not to happen unless Dwight tells the Knicks he wont sign an extension.

by breaking20 on Jan 23, 2012 3:48 PM EST reply actions

It really doesn't

I am not a Nets fan so i don’t have a bias in this. Orlando shouldn’t do that trade is terrible for them, Amare contract is really bad considering his knee issues. If i were the Magic i would rather do ethier the Nets or Lakers trade but probably will play the season as they seem to be legit title contenders.

Wait...he'd go to Brooklyn....

but not MSG? I find that hard to believe!

by worm73 on Jan 23, 2012 4:17 PM EST reply actions

He wants to go to the Nets

because Deron has told him what a first class organization this is, one that is spending a ton of money and letting him have unprecedented input. You think Dwight wants to go play for Dolan and D’antoni?

Where you going? NOWHERE!

I just don’t understand why Nets fans want Melo. For starters he can’t play defense and secondly the Knicks aren’t giving him up. If someone from that team is going its Amare. He’s older, more injury prone and the least talented.

Melo isn’t going anywhere Nets Nation.

by iamabeefcake on Jan 23, 2012 6:53 PM EST reply actions

They can keep Melo. He’s a ball hog and I just don’t see him as a winner.

by Coach Joe on Jan 23, 2012 6:57 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

amare and tyson aren't playing well together on the knicks

so why would the magic look to bring them both to orlando? Amare’s game doesn’t mesh at all with Chandler’s, he reduced to more of a perimeter player with Chandler clogging up the paint. I can’t see this trade giving the magic a better chance to win than they have now, so if their owner really is all about going for the title right now, this trade doesn’t seem to make much sense

by oer1220 on Jan 23, 2012 8:55 PM EST reply actions

I'm concerned about the Lakers!

First, let me say the fact that Dwight wants to be a NET is great for
fans like us!! But, I’m getting nervous with the Lakers losing 3
straight. That mixed with the fact that the Clippers are creeping up
on the Lakers in popularity in LA scares me. Unfortunately as a Net
fan I see the Lakers making the move for D12 to add another star to
their roster. That combined with the fact that our biggest chip is
coming off surgery, and Bynum has remained healthy. I have to believe
Orlando would take Bynum and Gasol over Lopez and Marshon and picks…
I hope I’m wrong, but the more the Lakers lose and the Clippers win,
has to hurt our chances. Whether Dwight wants to come here or not, if
the Lakers get into serious talks with the Magic they’ll want to make
up for that Chris Paul train wreck!!

by worm73 on Jan 23, 2012 9:07 PM EST reply actions

Lakers

STILL aren’t willing to give up both Bynum and Gasol.

This is nonsense

The Magic have already said they don’t want Amare because his contract couldn’t be insured because of his bad knees. The only Knick-loving a$$-kisser worse than SAS is Broussard, and they’re both buffoons.

ok, i know this isn't likely

but how great would it be if the knicks trade for dwight and he bolts to come here?

people would be forced to respect us then

by mbspam17 on Jan 23, 2012 10:59 PM EST reply actions

Not sure if that is the best case scenario

While it sounds nice in theory, I’m holding out hope that giving huge money to aging, injury-prone players like Chandler & Amare truly blows up in their faces in a year or two. It would be the Isaiah Knicks all over again.

Probably a good way to unload Hedo

That said,

A. why would the Magic take that deal? That’s a good way to get yourself into basketball purgatory with 2 big contracts weighing down the payroll (though this thought probably excites Otis) that are non-stars (and STAT’s contract is uninsurable)

B. Why would Dwight stay in NY to play with ball-dominant Melo and a band of bums rather than play with a ball-sharer in Deron Williams and a band of, well, bums, but at least after 2012 the payroll will be entirely clear outside of Deron/Dwight (unless we also take back Hedo). Could have space for Josh Smith or Paul Millsap or someone like that in 2013 especially if the cap goes up.

by J-Nasty on Jan 24, 2012 10:41 AM EST up reply actions

Though I guess the same goes for the Knicks too

but Deron would take up less cap space than Melo.

by J-Nasty on Jan 24, 2012 10:42 AM EST up reply actions

Turk

Knicks woujld probably have to take back Turk and Duhon, which I’m sure they’d be willing to do to get this deal done (its a dream come true trade for the Knicks).

So dwight wants to go to the the other losing team across the river?

I’ve been hearing about this news a lot and I cringe every time I do. For once the Nets are a preferred destination of a superstar and no one in the NBA or sports world can swallow the truth, and they disregard it as if they forgot Dwight said he would like to go here. What messed this whole thing up for us are the Magic FO they pulled the chord on what would have been a solid deal and made us look like fools, especially with Brook Lopez’s injury. We’ve been losing but so have the Knicks, our records are almost the same except the Knicks have been playing subpar teams and have way more talent than us. Why would Dwight want to go there? The only teams I’m worried about are the Lakers and Mavs, but as some people here say Dwight’s chances of going to the Mavs or Knicks are pretty slim. I hope Dwight comes to the Nets just so we can finally have the respect we deserve. Even when Jkidd led this team to the finals back to back we never had anyone’s respect and it’s annoying.
