Deadlines and Commitments - XLIX

We're probably a month away from the high season for trades. It should begin on March 1, when 130 free agents can be traded for the first time. Expect a lot of activity between March 1 and the trade deadline two weeks later. Of course, there's now a lot of conflicting information about whether the Magic will want to trade Dwight Howard or keep their team rolling, intact.

We've added some crucial dates regarding the Nets' transition from New Jersey to Brooklyn, including the earliest possible date for the completion of the exterior skin; what Barclays Center might look like if the Nets want to bring prospective free agents to the arena that first week of July; and the team's last games as the New Jersey Nets.

Star-divide

January 25 - Deadline to offer contract extensions to members of the 2008 Draft Class. Nets are unlikely to offer Brook Lopez an extension although Billy King was careful not to rule it out completely.

First Week of February - Earliest possible date for Lopez's return from a broken foot. He injured it in a preseason game December 21. Recuperation was expected to last six to eight weeks. He can opt for a short rehab tour in Springfield with the Armor if he wants.

February - Brooklyn Nets will reportedly unveil their new colors and logo, but NOT their new uniform. Also, in February, the business side of the team will move from PNY Center in East Rutherford and Barclays Center Showroom in Manhattan to Bruce Ratner's 15 Metro Tech in Brooklyn, one stop north of Barclays Center on the subway.

February 6 - 10-day contracts can be signed; Last day 13 players can dress and play. After this date, teams can dress 13 players but only 12 can play; first of five games that Nets will dress in retro New York Nets uniforms. They will play the Bulls that night. Other dates for the "Hardwood Classic" uniforms: February 11 vs. the Spurs; February 15 vs. the Grizzlies; February 22 vs. the Magic and March 7 vs. the Clippers.

February 10 - Non-guaranteed deals become fully guaranteed. That would apply to Larry Owens, who has a non-guaranteed deal.

February 22 - First day Mehmet Okur can be traded in multi-player deal. He can traded one-for-one at any time.

February 26 - NBA All-Star Game in Orlando. Pundits doubt the Magic want to see Howard in another team's uniform during All-Star weekend. However, what's the alternative? Having the All-Star Game dominated by trade talks? Choose your poison, Richard DeVos.

March 1 - First day teams can trade players they signed as free agents in 2011. For the Nets, that's Shelden Williams, Shawne Williams, Kris Humphries and DeShawn Stevenson.

March 4 - Russian Presidential Election. Mikhail Prokhorov vs. Vladimir Putin. Prokhorov highly unlikely to win or make a run-off should Putin not get 50% of the vote. If he wins, or if Putin appoints him prime minister (surprisingly more likely), he has said he will put his Nets shares in a "blind trust", with independent trustees in charge of major decisions.

March 15 - NBA trade deadline, 6 p.m. ET

March 16 - Nets travel to Orlando.

March 23 - Last day to sign a player and have him be playoff-eligible

April 23 - Last regular season home game for the Nets in New Jersey, 7:30 at Prudential Center vs. the 76ers

April 26 - Regular season ends with Nets vs Raptors. in Toronto, last game for the New Jersey Nets unless they make the playoffs.

May 23 - Earliest completion date for exterior skin at Barclays Center

June 28 - NBA Draft in Newark. Number of picks currently owned by the Brooklyn Nets (and by this point they will be be the Brooklyn Nets): three, their own and the Rockets' (lottery-protected) first round picks plus the Heat's second round pick, which could very well be the last pick in the draft.

July 1 - Teams can contact free agents. For those thinking tours of the Barclays Center might be in order that week, the arena should be looking a lot like the finished product, with the scoreboard and other LED installation nearly complete and seating almost all in place.

July 11 - Teams can begin signing free agents.

July 27 – August 12 - 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Deron Williams likely to be only Net playing at the Olympics. France did not offer Johan Petro a slot on Les Bleus, its Olympic team. Mehmet Okur hasn't played for Turkey's "12 Giant Men" since the 2007 World Championships.

August 30 - Expected completion date for Barclays Center. Might slip a few days. Expect a couple of shakeout events in early September. Moved back from August 27.

September 28 - Opening Night, Barclays Center. Jay-Z will open the arena with a series of concerts.

October 17 - Arena construction documents list this date as first preseason game at the arena.

October 31 - Opening Night for the Brooklyn Nets, according to those same documents. Arena officials note that this is simply a target date, not set in stone.

the question is health

how long will he be healthy over the course of a four year deal in which he will be getting $14.1 and $14.6 million in his last years, at age 32 and 33

that team stinks

2 max players and they can’t beat mediocre teams

by DJ HeavyDuty on Jan 22, 2012 4:07 PM EST up reply actions

Can't argue with that right now

Still, the team has a lot of room for improvement. A coaching change, a healthy B. Davis, and our players starting to hit wide open shots could go a long way.

by Dylan87 on Jan 22, 2012 4:10 PM EST up reply actions

The nets have made there share of Dumb moves and still do.....but.....

I would never have broken up that squad that the Knicks had last year…..Sorry , but that was relly ,really dumb…..I would have added pieces…..Imagine just Shumpert with that squad….WOW….

by NetFan48 on Jan 22, 2012 4:14 PM EST up reply actions

They played well offensively

But people forget how bad that team was defensively. The Knicks got killed on the boards on a regular basis, and we had no interior defense. If the Knicks get it going offensively which they should with Melo and Amar’e, they will be a good team. So far, they haven’t made it work though.

That team looks pretty good

Although, its hard to say what would have happened. Maybe we pass on Shumpert with Felton here. Our we don’t have room to sign T. Chandler, after re-signing W. Chandler. Obviously that team would be pretty good though.

by Dylan87 on Jan 22, 2012 4:22 PM EST up reply actions

Idk......I still think ....

They could have added some defensive players to that squad and improved even more……….Yes, They could be a good team with these guys now but I think that they could very well have reached greatness with the team that they had………..There was tons of Chemistry going on there……

by NetFan48 on Jan 22, 2012 4:21 PM EST up reply actions

Thats true

But it didn’t happen overnight. The Knicks had a really bad 6 game losing streak at the beginning of last season, and they gave up over 100 points in every game during it. I’m going to wait another month before I judge this team. If we keep on playing like this, then its safe to say it was a mistake.

by Dylan87 on Jan 22, 2012 4:24 PM EST up reply actions

it will get better

but you guys need to trade Amare while you still can. He peaked last year and now it looks all downhill. you can fix this last mistake by getting a good supporting cast around the young guys you have. He’s showing age

not sure if he is tradeable

An Amar’e for Gasol swap might make sense for both teams, since the Knicks could use someone with postup game. I think he will be fine for the next few years as long as we have a true PG. The last couple years could be pretty ugly though.

by Dylan87 on Jan 22, 2012 4:31 PM EST up reply actions

his name makes him tradeable

The name Amare Stoudemire still carrys a superstar connotation with it so you can get somthing out of him. Now is your chance though.

Every player that makes it to the NBA is great...Even Stephen Graham.....

It’s the chemistry of a team that makes them excel……The Knicks with that team that they had only needed to wait a little longer for a leader to emerge from that squad……Then they would have been great….

How about this

I would really like to see the Nets add Kmart and W Chandler to the team in March. I know many on this board don’t want that but both would help in two positions of need and do more than just contribute.

KMart would bring some toughness, 7-8 more rebs, block shots and about 12 points. Chandler also blocks shots, has good size at SF, will get you about 15 and 5-6 rebs from that position while defending the SF position better than abything we have now.

Would think both would like to play in Brooklyn. You move Farmar and Shawne Williams to other teams in contention for depth.

by bkfire on Jan 22, 2012 4:45 PM EST up reply actions

A team of

Deron/Gaines
Marshon/Morrow/
Chandler/Stevenson/James
Hump/KMart/Shelly
Lopez(upon return)/Memo/Petro

Could make a run. Bench looks much better.

by bkfire on Jan 22, 2012 4:47 PM EST up reply actions

In the event Dwight doesnt come, we still a lot of money for someone else, our first pick (MKG?) and the above team to start with.

by bkfire on Jan 22, 2012 4:49 PM EST up reply actions

How would the Nets be able to add Chandler and K-Mart under the cap?

by mytoemytoe on Jan 22, 2012 4:50 PM EST up reply actions

Farmar and Shawne Williams make a combined 6.5 million. K-Mart and Wil Chandler are worth at least double that number.

OK, how are you going to get rid of Memo?

by mytoemytoe on Jan 22, 2012 5:01 PM EST up reply actions

YARGH, I’m trying to talk to BKFire who said he wants to add these guys in March.

by mytoemytoe on Jan 22, 2012 5:02 PM EST up reply actions

haha - i got you.

But croation’sa right, Memo is an expiring, except I’m pretty sure they want to offer that to Orlando, if need be

by bkfire on Jan 22, 2012 5:04 PM EST up reply actions

Right, but a team that wants an expiring contract like Memo is probably looking to unload a player with a big contract, which would then prevent the Nets from doing anything at all.

by mytoemytoe on Jan 22, 2012 5:06 PM EST up reply actions

he expires this offseason

if this team if still sniffing playoffs

i’m offering deals to JR, Kenyon, Aaron, and Wilson as soon as the CBA season ends

they cant be selective, they need help, and i wouldnt mind them making the playoffs this year even if its a 5 game series against the heat or bulls

Aaron who?

Also, WilChan is a restricted free agent.

by mytoemytoe on Jan 22, 2012 5:12 PM EST up reply actions

I like that thought...don't think we need Aaron,

would like Chandler, but he may cost and interfere with the “big picture”, unlesDwight aint coming in a trade(highly doubtful).

Kenyon and Smith would def bring some toughness and fill voids at both positions of need – SF and big man

That would crack me up

J.R. in NY. Add another ball stopper/chucker to that team

Gotta say no.. I hate his defense.

by mytoemytoe on Jan 22, 2012 4:50 PM EST up reply actions

He's a sweet outside shooter though

playing along side Lopez (or howard hopefully) he’s gonna flourish because he wont have to do the the things he’s being forced to do now such as being an inside presence, and getting boards

by Prash Ramani on Jan 22, 2012 4:51 PM EST up reply actions

Ha. Screw emotion.

He makes threes sometimes and that’s it.

I think it's fine.

by NetsMets4Life on Jan 22, 2012 4:51 PM EST up reply actions

yeah but as a backup in any scenario

having a big who can drain a three is always a unique weapon to have. Especially if your starting center is a low post banger type.

Off topic but

My friend is a really biased Knicks fan, and he keeps texting me reasons why the Nets won’t get Howard and how he will go to Lakers or Bulls. But he just told me he think Omer Asik is a better trade prospect and player than Marshon Brooks, I laughed hard at this but he was serious lol is he crazy? I think so

by beefylennox on Jan 22, 2012 4:59 PM EST reply actions

Of course, he is just doing what friends always do, he is trying to get you riled up. You just gotta throw ’em right back at him

by mytoemytoe on Jan 22, 2012 5:00 PM EST up reply actions

Asik is a good role player but

My friend was serious lol wasn’t trying to get me riled up his reasoning was this- Bulls rejected Asik-Mayo trade…. Mayo>Brooks therefore Asik>Brooks lol

by beefylennox on Jan 22, 2012 5:03 PM EST up reply actions

There’s no real way to compare Mayo and Brooks considering Brooks is only 20 games into his freshman year

Look at upside

Put Asik in a system where he is the go to guy, and not around drose, boozer, noah, etc he wont be that good.

Put brooks in a system where he is the go to scorer, (kinda like the one he’s in now) he does pretty well. AS A ROOKIE.

Theres a reason why he’s compared to kobe

and I think the Nets have to be active with James and Shawne WIlliams (and yes, DeShawn Stevenson whose knee has to be drained regularly.)

Here's what happened..

I decided to eat some Oreo’s like the ones below

I noticed that the air pressure inside was gone. Then I tried to feel the Oreo’s inside and noticed that on one end, one Oreo was missing while some were crushed. At first I thought, meh? Fail packaging + someone in the house might have dropped it, crushing some of the Oreo’s. On my first inspection, I didn’t find any openings or whatsoever. So I grabbed some milk and ate through the whole thing. When I finished, I decided to inspect the wrapper again, it was then that I noticed that there was a slit about 2 inches long under the fin of the wrapper, made me think maybe that’s where the mouse went through then ate some Oreo’s. I’m pretty PETROfied right now. Will I get rabies or something?
