Trade Deadline

What amazes me is how little we learned from last season. Almost every single day we came to this website and saw an article on Melo and how we offered this package, and how we were so close, and that Denver was thinking about it, and it was a done deal blah blah blah. We were so zoned out on him that most of us didnt think about other NBA superstars. And that's exactly what I think is going to happen.

The Dwill trade came out of thin air. No Nets fan knew ANYTHING about it, not NetsDaily or NetIncome- NO ONE. After watching Melo go to Knicks we were devastated, only to run out of our houses screaming at the top of our lungs in just boxers after tuning in to ESPN that fateful day. I TRULY believe that due to the Magic's unwillingness and immaturity blended with Dwight's never ending list of squads, Billy King is looking at other players. Who? I dont know. But I bet we get another superstar at the deadline- someone that will catch Dwill and we Nets fans off guard and once again thank Billy for his hard work. Think about it- we offered a package, how much more could you work on it? He has to be looking elsewhere..

But but but

Deron isn't staying if we don't get Dwight!

I’ve been saying that its never been Diwght or Bust. I hope King realizes that and finds some other superstar in a position that we ACTUALLY need to upgrade, like SF.

Sure Dwight is getting all the attention

But when Dwill first came it was all about getting talent. If we get talent other than Dwight, thats similar to his level on the court, then I bet he stays. I have a few ideas in my head but Im not Billy so they dont matter..

by Philv2 on Jan 21, 2012 2:46 PM EST up reply actions

BK knows Deron needs another star on this team. I’m sure he’ll pull something together. If not then everything we gave up for Deron will have gone to waste. BK knows this and I think he has backup contingencies.

The question is who else is BK looking at?

by iamabeefcake on Jan 21, 2012 2:19 PM EST reply actions

yup!

Billy King must be working on something else, besides DWight. And a reminder to all, if the Magic hold onto him, because they are playing well, come this summer, Dwight takes a 30 million dollar haircut by signing with another team as a free agent. I don’t think he will do that, anymore than I think that DWILL will take the same haircut and leave as a FA this summer. When someone says it’s not about the money, IT’S ALWAYS ABOUT THE MONEY.

If it's about the money

Then Dwight leaves Orlando… that 30 MIL is peanuts to what he will make in endorsements in a big market!!!

True but lets face it..

He’s made money. He has money. He’ll make MORE money. If he’s serious about wanting to play with elite players like Dwill and others than he’ll take a pay cut….like Wade and Lebron and others (can’t remember their exact names) especially if it helps give the team flexibility for signing other players.

'We're crowning Dwill like some sort of savior

He is not. I could care less if he is traded, walks whatever. I want players that want to play for the NETS.

by Mr. Cash on Jan 21, 2012 3:06 PM EST reply actions

I think this situation is completely different.

Carmelo was available when all we had was assets. Favors, a high pick, Harris were all pieces that were mentioned in a potential deal. These assets would be used in a trade for any player.

Also, the off season right after that season was horrible. The best talent was Nene and he’s really not that great. We had to make a trade for someone or we would be doomed. BK’s friend in Utah really helped us out when things looked really bad for us.

Now, we don’t have that many assets and unlike Carmelo, a play WANTS to be in Brooklyn. Also, the same player may not be traded and can sign with the Nets outright. It would make no sense for us to look for another superstar when we can get the best center in the NBA and retain our depth.

You’re assuming the situations are exactly the same and theyre not.

1. We now have a superstar
2. We now have less assets
3. We are now pursuing a player who wants to play here
4. That player will most likely not be traded and can just sign here

So i disagree.

by i says on Jan 21, 2012 3:46 PM EST reply actions

Uhhhh

Desire is irrelevant. We’re talking about what might happen if Dwight gets traded to another team. But I’ll play your little game. We do have assets- Brooks, Lopez, and a very luscious 2012 draft pick in a (supposedly) stacked draft. Yes, like others I dont want Brooks to leave either but for the sake of argument he is an asset. The offseason WAS NOT HORRIBLE. Thaddeus Young, David West, Jamal Crawford, Tyson Chandler, and Caron Butler are all players that couldve helped us right now. And yea Nene too. And to think he won’t be traded is….you know what I already have one warning so I wont go off on you. But you’re really naive my friend. EXTREMELY naive. You REALLY think the Magic organization is going to secure him past the trade deadline, crossing their fingers that he’ll reminisice on all the good times and ink a new contract with them? Risking getting ABOSLUTELY ZILCH NADA SQUAT for him- “THE BEST CENTER IN THE NBA”?? And yea, a team with Stevenson or an injury prone sophmore in Damion James is great depth. Take a seat.

by Philv2 on Jan 21, 2012 4:07 PM EST up reply actions

Lets see how i should go about tearing your argument apart

You are basically saying you KNOW the Magic will not want to keep him past the deadline even if he says there’s a chance he may re sign. You are in no position to make this statement.

Yeah, we have assets, and I never said we don’t. I clearly said we have LESS assets. Maybe you should read the post first.

You REALLY think the Magic organization is going to secure him past the trade deadline, crossing their fingers that he’ll reminisice on all the good times and ink a new contract with them?

No. When did I ever say he would think about the good times to convince himself to stay? If you know anything about the Magic, you would know their owner is very old and wants to win. They currently have one of the best records in the NBA. The Magic, like teams of the past, may be willing to take the gamble and see if they can win and show Howard that they are good enough to stay for. I never said anything close to what you are arguing, so once again learn to read the post.

You think an off season headlined by Chandler and Nene is a good off season? Players who have to be at least the third best on the team to be in contention for a championship? That makes absolutely no sense. just because an off season has players that can make a team better doesn’t mean that that class of free agents is good.

And lastly, you once again fail to read a post correctly. I said if Dwight signed as a free agent we would have incredible depth. Brooks, Lopez, Morrow, potentially Barnes or Davis.

Why should i believe anything you say? You can’t even read a post correctly. Maybe you should go read it over before making irrelevant arguments.

Heres what everybody forgets

He said he wants to get TRADED to the Nets…thats not the same as coming over in FA and losing a ton of money. Sure he would love to come here and play with Deron in Brooklyn if he gets traded here and thus doesn’t lose that extra money, but if he doesn’t get traded? and now has to risk losing that money? everybody says he can make that money back but what if he gets injured and thats his last contract? he has to think of security too and that 30 Mil is a nice security blanket…sure if Orlando gets destroyed in the first round he might consider losing that 30 Mil…but hes going to think long and hard about it…

I really don't t hink BK is trading Deron.

even Dwight is traded elsewhere I think BK will try to add valauable assets as Philv2 stated above. Also for those who say we don’t have any trade assets…we have a high draft pick in a loaded draft thats very valuable and we have a great shooter in Morrow who is now expendable thanks to brooks oh and don’t forget Okurs expireing contract..

by Prokyswallet on Jan 21, 2012 4:48 PM EST reply actions

He is definitely looking elsewhere at other potential deals

but its extremely unlikely he’ll get a player of Deron’s magnitude again. What will most likely happen is if Orlando decides to call Dwight’s bluff and keep him, Nets will maybe trade Lopez, and anyone outside of D-Will, MarShon, and Ammo, to a team for a perimeter player.

nope

even if he doesn’t want to sign an extension, he’s a restricted free agent next year so minnesota will just match any offer and keep him

by mbspam17 on Jan 22, 2012 12:31 PM EST up reply actions

I'll bet he doesn't, especially after tonight...

I’ll also say there’s at least a 50/50 chance he’s dealt by the deadline.

If you want to ask what star player will become available by deadline to trade for if Dwight is making it to free agency, look no further then Kevin Love if they don’t ink him to an extension by today.

by vincecarter4pres on Jan 25, 2012 6:19 AM EST up reply actions

there is always somebody available

nobody knew Deron was going to be availlable last year…besides we don’t necesarily need another superstar just good players

JaVale, Love if he doesn't get extended (hes got 3 days left..), Chandler, Beasley, JR Smith, Wallace, Gordon,

Ellis, Josh smith, Granger, DeMarcus…just to name a few…these are all players that are probably available and could improve the Nets..enough names for you?

by Prokyswallet on Jan 22, 2012 12:58 PM EST reply actions

it's literally impossible for the nets to get love, the only star on that list

the rest of those guys in the top bar are definitely not keeping deron here, demarcus certainly isn’t, and ellis, jsmoove and granger a) probably aren’t available for a reasonable price and b) wouldn’t keep deron here unless we get two or more of them

by mbspam17 on Jan 22, 2012 1:57 PM EST up reply actions

how is it impossible?

if he doesn’t agree to an extension they will probably look to trade him. and if we get any of those players on that list along with a healthy brook, this will be a pretty good team. why wouldn’t Deron stay? where would he go? hes going to miss out on 30 mil and go to toronto? there are few teams that can afford him and are competitive. its not going to take another superstar to .keep him.

by Prokyswallet on Jan 22, 2012 2:05 PM EST reply actions

do you know what a restricted free agent is?

by mbspam17 on Jan 22, 2012 2:21 PM EST up reply actions

Do you?

it just means that they will have to match whatever offer another team makes…
you know who else is a restricted FA? OJ Mayo and Memphis was trying to trade him…
so yeah people trade restricted FA i don’t know why you find it so hard to believe

maybe you better go LITERALLY check your facts and go LOL by yourself somewhere

by Prokyswallet on Jan 22, 2012 2:53 PM EST up reply actions

Are you sure about Deron's FA status?

According to what I’ve been reading, the only restricted FA on the Nets at season’s end will be Lopez. Okur, Hump, Stevenson, Shelden, and Gaines are all unrestricted. Deron, Farmar, and Shawne can become “unrestricted” if they decline their player options for 2012-13. Thus if DWill does not accept an extension with the Nets, he probably would opt out as an unrestricted and test the market.

they are exactly alike

If minnesota believes Love will not stay while will they bother matching the offer and paying him all that money next year? they could decide to just trade him now and get some good value for him. its not impossible so stop saying it is.

by Prokyswallet on Jan 22, 2012 11:14 PM EST up reply actions

it is impossible

they won’t trade him now because
1) he’ll want to resign, they’re an upcoming team with rubio
2) if he wants to sign somewhere else, he’ll sign a max offer sheet, minny will match, and they’ll have him for another 4-5 years

by mbspam17 on Jan 22, 2012 11:39 PM EST up reply actions

It's not if they can match, it's do they want a disgruntled star and quite truthfully, it looks like they're setting up a conspiracy.

One of the top 3 power forwards in the game, a fringe top 10 player, one who’s never had any major injuries, one who hasn’t topped out, in a market that has trouble keeping their stars and they want to low ball him on his contract left and right?

Why?

Dig deep.

Brooks Brothers for Love is a pretty big value IMHO.

by vincecarter4pres on Jan 25, 2012 6:23 AM EST up reply actions

all right, they are alike

each team could keep their player if they want to. memphis doesn’t want to keep mayo, so they’re letting him go. they could match any offer and keep him if they wanted to.

minny obviously wants to keep love and thus will match any offer, making it impossible for him to leave.

90/10...

I’m hesitant to believe one’s commitment when he says there’s a “”http://espn.go.com/new-york/nba/story/_/id/7319396/deron-williams-90-percent-chance-stay-new-jersey-nets" target="new">90 percent" chance he’ll re-sign with the Nets.

If you’re part of the 90% then I hope you’re right that “a pretty good team” would compel Deron to stay. I’m more in the opinion of the 10% that he’ll leave without another superstar.

“Hopefully we get some good talent in here to where I can stay”, said DWill. Reading between the lines, I think he estimated the Nets’ chances of getting another superstar at 90%. Now that’s good news, because he has faith in King.

Would you at least agree with me that he’d be more apt to stay if another superstar were in place?

If you want a superstar, just look across the river...

The Knicks are reeling right now. Everyone at the Garden is pointing fingers at each other. When CP3’s hamstring gets better, I’d love to see some action taken. Hope you’re reading, Billy!

Over at MSG, they’re complaining about floor spacing, not having enough 3-pt shooting, and lack of a true floor general. Tyson Chandler’s signing has hampered Amare Stoudemire this whole season. Although his mid-range game is decent, Stat is most comfortable attacking the basket with explosive dunks; more often than not, Chandler is getting in the way. And because neither have strong perimeter jumpers (nor are they inclined to put them up), they clog up D’Antoni’s free flowing offense and they’re getting killed.

Normally, I love to see the Knicks fall flat on their faces but if we could make a trade that helps everyone involved let’s do it:

Nets trade: Mehmet Okur, Johan Petro, Jordan Farmar, and Anthony Morrow; acquire: Randy Foye (Clippers), Ronny Turiaf (Wizards), Landry Fields and Stoudemire (Knicks).
Knicks trade: Stoudemire, Fields, and Bill Walker; acquire: Morrow, Andray Blatche (Wizards), Mo Williams and Eric Bledsoe (Clippers).
Clippers trade: Williams, Foye, and Bledsoe; acquire: Farmar, Walker, and JaVale McGee (Wizards).
Wizards trade: Blatche, McGee and Turiaf; acquire: Okur and Petro.

Trade breakdown:

The Nets get the superstar that DWill craves in Stoudemire (albeit, “an injury waiting to happen” superstar), Newark-native Foye, and decent bench players in Turiaf and Fields. And if Deron still wants Dwight Howard at the trade deadline, we can still offer draft picks, expiring contracts, and Brook Lopez? If the Magic wait until the offseason to find out that they’re going to lose Superman, do you think they’ll really turn down Stoudemire and Brook in a sign-and-trade? The Nets’ 2011-12 cap jumps $5.477M but that’s chump change to Proky and they should still be under the luxury tax threshold.

Nets Depth Chart
PG Deron/R. Foye/S. Gaines
SG D. Stevenson/M. Brooks
SF L. Fields/Shawne/D. James
PF K. Humphries/Sheldon
C A. Stoudemire/R. Turiaf

The Knicks get their starting PG in Mo Williams (nix the Baron Davis gamble), a poor man’s version of Amare in Blatche, the much needed 3 point specialist in Morrow, and a promising future PG challenge to Iman Shumpert in Bledsoe. Their 2011-12 cap only increases a paltry Cablevision sum of $615.8K and they stay under the luxury tax threshold.

Knicks Depth Chart
PG Mo/I. Shumpert/M. Bibby
SG A. Morrow/T. Douglas
SF C. Anthony/J. Jeffries/R. Balkman
PF A. Blatche/J. Harrelson’s replacement
C T. Chandler/A. Blatche

The Clippers can only do this when CP3 comes back from injury and are convinced he’ll stay injury-free throughout a playoff run. Mo Williams and Foye are great compliments to Paul and Billups but their backcourt is small and vulnerable to the Kobes and Durants of the western NBA world. Their bench needs more size and McGee gives them that hardnosed defensive stopper along with great hustle from Walker, and a returning prodigal son in Farmar. They also clear almost $7M from the cap putting them under and poised for a bid to strengthen their bench further with J.R. Smith, Kenyon Martin, or possibly Wilson Chandler later on.

Clippers Depth Chart
PG C. Paul/J. Farmar
SG C. Billups/B. Walker/T. Leslie
SF C. Butler/R. Gomes
PF B. Griffin/R. Evans/T. Thompkins
C D. Jordan/J. McGee

At this point, the Wizards are hoping to land the #1 draft pick again and nab freshman Andre Drummond from UConn. Wizards fans mercilessly boo Blatche as if he had married/divorced a Kardashian, and McGee’s mom is trading barbs with the coach in the media. It’s a fiasco in the capitol and they need some veteran leadership (with hopefully expiring contracts too). Petro doesn’t have an expiring contract in 2012 but it’s user friendly at $3.5M and terminates after 2013. Okur’s $10.9M comes off the books after this year. And with the expected amnesty of Rashard Lewis’ $23M contract, the Wizards will have a chance to sign anybody and everybody in the offseason. The trade only adds $875.5K, keeping them under the 2011-12 cap. The Nets and Clippers would probably have to sweeten the deal by throwing in draft picks and/or a trade exception.

Wizards Depth Chart
PG J. Wall/S. Mack
SG N. Young/Jordan Crawford/R. Mason
SF C. Singleton/J. Vesely
PF R. Lewis/T. Booker/K. Seraphin
C J. Petro/M. Okur

With Dolan you never know...

If the losses keep mounting he might just issue the order to trade one of the big three. Both Carmelo and Chandler are still the shiny new toys for him, so my guess would be that Amare goes first. After D’Antoni that is.

With CP3's injury history...

I’d have to agree that the Clippers would not move Mo Williams. But they have an embarrassing abundance of good PG’s in L.A. I’d believe that they’d be willing to trade from their strength to bolster the size and depth of their bench. Bench strength goes a long way in the playoffs.

The Wiz wouldn’t do that without AT LEAST getting Hump back. Even then I doubt they do it. The person they NEED to part with is Rashard Lewis and that ridiculous contract. At $21 million this year, that’s a DEFINITE cap killer.

You do have a point though about the Knicks. Between Chandler being in the paint and Melo hogging the shots, Stat is being phased out even if it’s ‘unintentional’. While I’d be hesitant to taking Stat back because of his health issues, there are deals on a lesser scale that would help both teams. Fit or not, the Knicks aren’t making a trade to help us.
