MarShon Rising in Rookie Efficiency
Remember back in the lockout when Jimmer Fredette was going to put together a rookie game and how the nation's leading scorer (Fredette) hadn't invited the nation's second leading scorer (Marshon Brooks) to the game...and no one knew why. Maybe Jimmer didn't want to get shown up.
David Thorpe this week ranks Brooks at No. 3 among rookies behind Ricky Rubio and Kyrie Irving, saying "he's been terrific." In the NBA efficiency rankings for rookies, Brooks is also No. 3. Where's Jimmer? In Thorpe's rookie rankings, he's No. 26 and in the efficiency rankings, No. 31 ... and last among those with enough minutes to qualify.

The kid is inspiring, got that look in his eye
At this point, the skies the limit for him.. he’s reminding me of Dwayne Wade in his rookie season
Agreed
Initially, I thought Kobe…but his game resembles more rookie wade that had uncanny speed and athleticism. In addition, Paul pierce pump fakes and Kobe turnaround Js…in other word, the kid has a chance to be very special.

yup, he's the reason I'm not worried if we lose Dwight and Dwill...
I would be happy to build around him and Lopez.
2012 Lineup: D-Will - Brooks - AK47 - Lopez - D12... Book it!
If Nets would’ve given Jimmer a guarantee in the 2010 draft….Nets wouldn’t have Brooks today.
Brooks would’ve been last yrs leading scorer in the NCAA giving him more attention.

Still plenty of room on the bandwagon
As a matter of fact you can sit almost anywhere you like. Delusionals (optimists) tend to sit up front near the driver (ND), while realists (pessimists) like to sit in the back where they tend to cause trouble. The cool guys sit in the middle somewhere so no one can ever tell where they stand, mainly playing head games with the other two groups.

Wow Minnesota is fun to watch!
Denver and Utah too!
Let’s hope we don’t get crushed tonight! Then, maybe at mid-season we will trade for Dwight Howard. Or, we can wait till next year, as we are held hostage by the fear that Deron will leave, which we knew would be a problem when we traded for him!
I understand that the “end game” is building the best team possible, but does anyone remember the last time the Nets were consistently exciting or fun? Or when the group of guys looked like they even liked each other?

A agree
Nets have to get this kid at least 20 shots a game. If they do he can be a 20 point scorer. He has made good decisions with the ball for the most part and deserves more touches.
I remember on draft night….draftexpress had us picking Chandler Parsons with the #27.
If only the Nets had picked him with the second rounder. He plays with great energy.

This kid has been exciitng to watch. Nets needs to get him more touches and set up a few more plays for him. His penetration shows it can lead to easy buckets for Hump and others. The kid gives us all hope for the future. Hopefully MarShons play inspires DWill a bit more.

I read something about Kyrie Irving
having a comparable rookie season to Michael Jordan and Chris Paul in terms of PER.
It was stated at how rare this was for a rookie bla bla bla…
However, Brooks is only slightly behind Irving in PER (both in the low 20s—I think Irving is like 21.2 or something).
Yet, Brooks was not mentioned once in the article. Wouldn’t it be more objective to mention how great these TWO rookies are? I guess its less sensational to have TWO awesome (it would be three even, however Rubios turnovers and poor shooting % negatively affects his PER a lot) rookies for some reason. Maybe it devalues the authors emphasis on how rare this feat is if someone else this year is also within this same class…
Is the "rookie wall" really true?
I kind of think it’s an artifact of expecting them to get better on a weekly basis, and when they level off it seems like they’re sinking….
"Good pitching will always stop good hitting and vice-versa." -- Casey Stengel

absolutely too early to come away with anything meaningful
rookies need at least 40-50 games under their belt in order to get a good sample size. But as it stands today, and since the article was speculating, they might as well included Marshon in the discussion too.
I read that
and thought the same thing. But, realistically, Irving is only 19 and should be expected to improve more than the 22-year-old (23 on Thursday!) Marshon. So it’s really about who will be the next top 5 player, and Irving seems to have a chance. Funny how he was less heralded than Wall, etc.
But Marshon is doing really well by historical standards. The PER rookie chart (since 1977, >25 mpg) is here: http://tinyurl.com/6s9t5pe
Dang, he’s in good company there. Check out what other 23 year-old is only 2 spots ahead of him!

Thanks for sharing this, CAT.
While it certainly makes you smile to see MarShon up that high, there’s plenty of guys on that list who never became more than bit parts. But MarShon’s got the tools to avoid that.
the fact that he is 19 stands out the most to me
And I would definitely take Irving over Wall today… who knows maybe Wall figures it out..
I think people liked Wall so much because he reminded people so much of Rose. However, its clear they are very different players.
Funny that even though Irving was the #1 pick he didn’t get the amount of attention/hype that a #1 pick usually gets. I like the Chris Paul comparison. They are both athletic but superior athletes. Both (despite being picked 1st and 4th) were undervalued coming into the NBA. And both are very creative and dominant ball handlers/passers. I like everything about Irvings game. There is nothing he doesn’t do well, if not great.
But thats exactly how I feel about Marshon too. He is highly skilled (esp offensively, obviously). I think they both end up being the best of their class. Rubio’s ceiling seems lower than those two IMO.
last night we were joking how much Rubio looks like Kidd on the court
you’d almost thought Kidd was a Spanish teenager if you looked at the stat-line last night and then realized he made his only shot(three pointer) with 20 seconds left to tie the game

whats up with the Nets not getting any respect in the media...
What did the Nets do?? I wonder if any other team feels the same?
by kupalski on Jan 21, 2012 10:24 AM EST via mobile reply actions
They're a joke of a franchise around the league
Until they acquire a player like Dwight Howard and move to Brooklyn, that won’t change.
We as fans understand that the Nets have been so much better than teams like the Knicks over the past decade, but major media outlets like ESPN would never allow the Nets to receive such recognition.
How does the team feel?
I know I personally don’t care about the lack of respect. We don’t deserve any. Winning is the only way to get respect.

To me the Knicks are the team that is a joke. They aren’t winning and have a “Big 3”. I’d much rather be in the Nets scenerio with or without DWill and DHow…
Yeah, what's with the Knicks
They got their Big 3 and they still stink, just not so much and can make no further moves. It’s the highlight of my season so far.
Plan A all the way: Brook, Brooks, Deron, Dwight and a top draft pick SF
by John at the Jersey Shore on Jan 21, 2012 11:18 AM EST up reply actions
if the Knicks
end up with a worse record than we do with their “complete” team and “dominant” front line, while we are playing role players, a star, and a rookie… you kind of have to jump off a bridge if youre a Knicks fan. Preferably the Brooklyn bridge so we can all watch.
LOL...
What do you think, if the teams had switched schedules both teams records would be?
lol...knew I should have picked
a different handle. Have to think Knicks would have lost more games with our schedule and that we would have won more with their schedule. Don’t you think?
i think it would be a wash
but you never know.. maybe the Nets have less injuries with the knicks schedule… or that Amare and Melo both go out for long periods of time with the intensive early Nets sched… so many what ifs…
From what I have read seems like
the board is pretty well split on wether to include MarShon in a trade for DHow. I am in the “No” camp, he is “untouchable” in my book. I also believe that he is not a deal breaker. I think Nets have more than enough assets to trade with the Magic to acquire Howard.
while id like to agree with you
if marshon is the only thing standing between us and Howard….
then i wish him well in Orlando
by watchoutBLo on Jan 21, 2012 10:30 AM EST up reply actions
Agreed 100%
This is Dwight Howard. The best C of his generation. You do what it takes.
trade Marshon if we get to keep a # 1 pick, or Anderson has to come back to the Nets..
Last month we almost got the deal done before ownership crushed it and Brooks wasn’t included in that deal..
by kupalski on Jan 21, 2012 10:30 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
Also agreed here
I’d love Anderson back with the Nets.
One thing i feel confident of is...
If Billy king doesn’t have to give up MarShon, i’m sure he won’t. I suppose this will come down to the other bidders
Both the Nets and the Magic are over a barrel
The Magic have to get what they can from us or LA or Dallas, while we probably have to get Howard to keep DWill. I’d say there’s more pressure on us right now.
"Good pitching will always stop good hitting and vice-versa." -- Casey Stengel
by calling all toasters on Jan 21, 2012 10:31 AM EST up reply actions
There's only one untouchable on this team - Deron Williams
As much as I love Brooks, you have to do what it takes to get Dwight Howard. Ideally, the Nets acquire him as a FA and retain their outstanding young assets.
I also have an increasing suspicion that if the Magic are in serious contention to finish as a Top 4 seed by the end of the season, they may not trade Dwight. Howard will hit the open market, which will only make it better for the Nets.
Still, if you have the chance to acquire him today, you trade Brooks if you need to. I don’t think they will, considering BK is one of the best at making three and four team deals.
I'd like the Nets to do whatever it takes to keep Marshon, but if it's the only way, i'd trade him to get Dwight
Dwight Howard is not just a good player, he’s a guy who will go into the Hall of Fame one day.
And in retrospect, Orlando made a good decision waiting. Now, they might get a sweeter package with Marshon included, if they manage to convince Billy
Or March 15th will roll around, the trade request will still stand and they end up losing him for nothing in FA
This is exactly what happened to the Nuggets last year with Carmelo Anthony. I’m just waiting until March and then we’ll know.
exactly I don't see why people think
Orlando isn’t trading him. He will either be a Laker or Net after March 15
starshon isnt untouchable only d-will is.
by Andrew Flynn on Jan 21, 2012 10:47 AM EST up reply actions
The point
I am trying to make is that the Nets won’t need to include MarShon in a deal for DHow. At the deadline the Magic really don’t have much leverage. I don’t think DHow wants to go to LA and be #2 to Kobe and play in Shaqs shadow. I am sure his agent will inform the Lakers of that fact. Also got to think DHow would want MarShon on his team. So if the Magic do trade him at the deadline it will be for something similiar to the orginal deal. That really the point I am trying to make.
The pressure is not one sided
There is just as much pressure on the Nets to get this done as there is on the Magic to trade him. The Nets can’t offer Mehmet Okur and a 2nd rounder because LA is still in play, this is still a competition. The Nets aren’t just trying to trade for Dwight, they’re also trying to keep Orlando from trading him elsewhere, AKA to the Lakers.
The Nets are screwed if Dwight goes to LA, and everyone knows it. NJ’s offer is only gonna get better the closer the deadline looms, much like New York with Melo last year
I do agree
that there is pressure on Nets. I know Nets would prefer to wrap this up and get him on the team. That being said, we have plenty to offer and there is no need to include Brooks.
But what the Nets have to offer is dependent on what Orlando wants
Doesn’t matter what we have if Orlando doesn’t want it
You make a good point.
With our assets we can involve other teams. If Orlando wants Wallace we could get him. If they want Mayo we could get him. There is a lot of flexibility in what the offer will be. King is good at these types of deals. Lets see what happens but if I had to bet, I would bet MarShon isn’t in the deal. Actually let me say it this way, we won’t trade both Lopez and Brooks. I think we retain one of them.

Lots of factors helping out Marshon
His age and experience is definitely a factor, he’s more NBA ready than other guys. The Nets’ deficiencies help, as well as the presence of Deron and DeShawn. His long arms are a good advantage in his excellent rebounding rate so far, as well as probably his ability to get shots off.
Next step is using those long arms to get 2+ steals a game like Shumpert, and really help our D, maybe even become a guard shotblocker like John Wall
What worries me about MarShon is his size/strength
His game is more refined, but he’ll need to add some weight to be a better defender and finisher around the rim
most rookies are small coming into the league
kobe was a twig
garnett was lighter than a ghost
durant… still skinny… he turned out ok
prince, slid in the draft cause of his stature.. stayed a twig and contributes effectively
Noah was thought to be too skinny to be a center
Jamal Crawford… wears size 24 waist jeans
andrei kirilenko.. yet was a defensive monster his rookie-junior(?) nba years
So even if he doesn’t bulk up like Kobe did, he can still contribute. It would concern me if he relied on driving to the basket ala Wade to get him shots, but his style of play will allow him to succeed at any size, like a minny Durant, or Rip Hamilton.
The best scorers in the league can and do get to the rim as much as possible
A few more pounds would not hurt. At age 23, he should be a little bigger than he is
but yea he definitely can stand to bulk up..
id love it.
but i dont think he NEEDS to. He is proving to be successful regardless.
I would go crazy if Marshon started banging more and dunking on people.. that would just be insane.. I think he can even now, he just is feeling it out still? I hope.
Kevin Martin size would be fine

Jimmer who?
I’m so glad Brooks wasn’t an overhyped product coming out of college so that he fell all the way to us.
its amazing he wasnt
creative scoring athlete with ideal length all wrapped up in one? crazy how he was overlooked…
I just looked at that PER chart referenced up above……it’s funny that thus far Marshon is ranked above VC, Paul Pierce, Dwayne Wade, Grant Hill, and Iverson. I think Brooks game most closely resembles that of Pierce as he has that deceptive athleticism and up and under, fakes type of game to him. I could easily see him having a Pierce/Grant Hill type of career. I think if that were the case and we manage to keep him in a Nets jersey, this team has a bright future with or without Dwight and Deron.
I would love to see him paired with Harrison Barnes as the 2/3 on this team for the next 10 years. That would be an exciting offensive duo to watch grow together and think would be fun to watch them play off of each other on the wing. Paired with DWill and any combo of Brook and/or Dwight would be a tough team to stop defensively.
